20260210 [새벽묵상] 생각은 말로 드러난다 | Thoughts Are Revealed Through Words (마/Mt 12:22~37)

[Jesus and Beelzebul]

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Through the passages we have studied so far, Matthew has shown us that Jesus is the Messiah who received the Spirit of God as prophesied by the ancient prophets, and at the same time, He is the Lord of the Sabbath. Today’s passage begins with Jesus healing a man who was demon-possessed, blind, and mute.

However, even after witnessing this miracle, the Pharisees disparaged Him, claiming that Jesus drove out demons by Beelzebul. Through the dialogue Jesus had with them, I want to share a message titled: "Thoughts Are Revealed Through Words."

1. The Unmet Expectations of the Crowd (Verse 23)

When Jesus healed the demon-possessed man, verse 23 tells us that the crowds were amazed. A translation closer to the original text would be: "Could this man be the Son of David?" The "Son of David" they expected—the Messiah they imagined—was a powerful political and military leader who would liberate Israel from Roman oppression and rebuild the Davidic dynasty. But Jesus’ ministry was so different from their expectations. Their question reveals their internal conflict: they were speaking their thoughts exactly as they were, doubting that someone like Jesus could be the promised Messiah.

2. The Logic of the Kingdom (Verses 24-28)

In response to the crowd's questioning, the Pharisees asserted that Jesus was possessed by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, and used that power to drive out other demons. Jesus refutes their logic with two main points:

  • Internal Collapse (vv. 25-26): Every kingdom or household divided against itself will be ruined. If Satan drives out Satan, his kingdom cannot stand.

  • The Dilemma of Consistency (v. 27): Jesus asks, "If I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out?" He exposes their hypocrisy; they were performing similar ministries, yet they labeled His work as satanic simply because they rejected Him.

Then, Jesus turns the tables in verse 28: "But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." Here, Jesus uses the term "Kingdom of God" instead of His usual "Kingdom of Heaven." This emphasizes that He is working through the "Spirit of God," and it stands in direct opposition to the "Kingdom of Satan" mentioned in verse 26. Even though the Kingdom of God had arrived through the work of the Spirit, the Pharisees failed to recognize Jesus and committed the blasphemy of calling the Spirit's work the work of Satan.

3. Words: The Fruit of the Heart (Verses 33-37)

Jesus explains that this was not a simple mistake of the tongue. It happened because their hearts were filled with evil.

"For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (v. 34)

Whether it is the metaphor of the tree and its fruit (v. 33) or the idea of a person bringing things out of a "good or evil storehouse" (v. 35), the point is the same: Words reveal the heart. Jesus warns that we will have to give an account on the day of judgment for every "idle word"—even those spoken without much thought (v. 36). Why? Because those words reveal our true thoughts. In verse 30, Jesus makes it clear: "Whoever is not with me is against me." There is no middle ground in following Him. Even an "idle word" betrays which kingdom we truly belong to.

[Conclusion]

In verse 24, the Pharisees spoke. Then, what does verse 25 say? "Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them..." Friends, Jesus knew their thoughts through their words. That is why He responded with such a long and serious discourse. It wasn't just that their words opposed Jesus; it was that their thoughts were in rebellion against Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

We will speak countless words today. This is why we must guard our inner thoughts even more carefully. I pray in the name of the Lord that all the words flowing from your lips today would not be careless, but would be the beautiful fruit of a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.
