14:1 그 때에 분봉 왕 헤롯이 예수의 소문을 듣고

14:2 그 신하들에게 이르되 이는 세례 요한이라 그가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났으니 그러므로 이런 능력이 그 속에서 역사하는도다 하더라

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

14:3 전에 헤롯이 그 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아의 일로 요한을 잡아 결박하여 옥에 가두었으니

14:4 이는 요한이 헤롯에게 말하되 당신이 그 여자를 차지한 것이 옳지 않다 하였음이라

14:5 헤롯이 요한을 죽이려 하되 무리가 그를 선지자로 여기므로 그들을 두려워하더니

3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.

14:6 마침 헤롯의 생일이 되어 헤로디아의 딸이 연석 가운데서 춤을 추어 헤롯을 기쁘게 하니

14:7 헤롯이 맹세로 그에게 무엇이든지 달라는 대로 주겠다고 약속하거늘

14:8 그가 제 어머니의 시킴을 듣고 이르되 세례 요한의 머리를 소반에 얹어 여기서 내게 주소서 하니

14:9 왕이 근심하나 자기가 맹세한 것과 그 함께 앉은 사람들 때문에 주라 명하고

14:10 사람을 보내어 옥에서 요한의 목을 베어

14:11 그 머리를 소반에 얹어서 그 소녀에게 주니 그가 자기 어머니에게로 가져가니라

14:12 요한의 제자들이 와서 시체를 가져다가 장사하고 가서 예수께 아뢰니라

6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

스티븐 킹의 원작 소설을 영화로 만든 톰 행크스 주연의 그린 마일 The Green Mile(1999)이라는 영화가 있습니다. 폴(톰 행크스 역)은 교도관 대장인데, 두 자매를 강간하고 살해한 누명을 쓴 흑인 사형수 존 커피 John Coffey 가 교도소에 수감 되면서 벌어지는 이야기입니다. 이 영화의 장르가 특이합니다. 범죄+드라마 +판타지입니다. 존 커피의 약자는 J.C 그러니까 예수 그리스도를 상징하는 인물이 아닌가 생각해 봅니다. 그는 영화에서 사람을 치유하고 동물을 살리는 특별한 능력을 가지고 있습니다. 사형을 집행을 앞두고 주인공 폴과 존 커피가 나눈 대화가 많은 사람의 심금을 울렸습니다. 존 커피가 누명을 쓴 것을 확실하게 알게된 폴은 그의 사형집행을 주저하며 어떻게 해 주기를 원하냐고 묻자 존 커피는 폴에게 다음과 같이 대답합니다.

나는 지쳤어요, 보스. 비 맞은 참새처럼 외로이 길을 떠도는 것도 지쳤어요. 친구 하나 없이, 내가 어디서 왔는지 어디로 가는지, 왜 가는지 말해줄 사람 하나 없는 것도 지쳤어요. 무엇보다 인간들의 온갖 추한 작태와 세상에서 매일 보게 되는 고통으로 지쳤어요. 항상 내 머릿속에서는 유리가 깨지는 것 같아요.

항상 의인들은 악한 세상으로 인하여 의에 주리고 목이 마릅니다. 그린 마일은 사형장으로 가는 교도소의 바닥이 초록색인 것에서 따온 것입니다. 우리는 누구나 죽음을 향해 그린 마일을 걷는 자들입니다.

There is a movie titled The Green Mile (1999), based on a novel by Stephen King and starring Tom Hanks. Paul (played by Tom Hanks) is the head prison guard. The story unfolds when a Black death-row inmate named John Coffey, who has been falsely accused of raping and murdering two sisters, is imprisoned.

The genre of this film is unique: crime + drama + fantasy. John Coffey’s initials are J.C., which may symbolize Jesus Christ. In the movie, he has special abilities to heal people and even bring animals back to life. A conversation between Paul and John Coffey before his execution deeply moved many viewers. After Paul becomes certain that John has been falsely accused, he hesitates to carry out the execution and asks him what he wants him to do. John Coffey responds:

The righteous are always hungry and thirsty for righteousness in a wicked world. “The Green Mile” refers to the green-colored floor of the prison corridor leading to the execution chamber. In a sense, all of us are walking our own green mile toward death.

악인들

헤롯 안디바는 예수님의 소문을 듣고, 자신이 죽인 세례 요한이 살아났다고 난리를 칩니다. 로마 황제의 임명을 받아 일부 지역을 통치하는 직책을 분봉왕이라고 부릅니다. 그는 B.C.4~A.D.39까지 갈릴리, 베뢰아 지역을 통치했습니다. 헤롯 안디바는 아기 예수를 죽이려 했던 헤롯 대왕의 아들로 세례 요한을 죽이고, 예수를 심문(눅 23:7)한 자입니다.

같은 헤롯 대왕의 아들로 엄마가 다른 이복 동생 헤롯 빌립이 있었는데, 그는 헤로디아라는 아내와 살로메라는 딸이 있었는데, 헤로디아는 헤롯 대왕의 손녀입니다. 헤로디아의 아빠는 아리스토 블루스로 헤롯 빌립의 배다른 형이다. 그러니까 헤로디아는 배다른 삼촌과 결혼한 것입니다. 여기까지만 해도 이미 속된 말로 콩가루 집안입니다.

하지만 여기서 한발짝 더 나갑니다. 분봉왕 헤롯 안디바가 로마에 배다른 동생인 빌립 집에 놀러갔다가 재수씨인 헤로디아와 눈이 맞았습니다. 헤로디아는 아무 관직도 없는 남편을 버리고, 배다른 시아주버님인 왕 헤롯 안디바와 재혼을 합니다.

그런데 의인 세례 요한이 이를 보고 성경의 입각하여 야단을 친 것입니다(4). 이에 헤로디아가 헤롯을 부추켜 세례 요한을 유대3대 요새인 마케루스에 가두었습니다. 헤롯은 세례 요한을 죽이고 싶었지만, 사람들이 그를 선지자로 여기므로 두려워 하여 못 죽입니다. 그는 여우 같이 교활하고 간사한 성품을 가진 자입니다(눅 13:32). 또한 그는 우유부단한 자로서 하나님보다 사람을 더 의식하는 자였습니다(5). 또한 나라의 절반이라도 주겠다고 말하는 허세 넘치는 자입니다(7). 또한 체면 때문에 요한을 죽인 자입니다(9). 헤롯은 세례 요한의 말을 하나님의 말로 여기고 두려워했습니다. 앙심을 품은 것은 헤로디아입니다. 그녀는 악인 중에 악인입니다. 헤롯의 생일날(6), 이미 헤로디아가 모든 각본을 짜 놓은 상태이고, 헤롯은 보기 좋게 걸려들었습니다. 그녀는 자신의 딸까지 동원하여 세례 요한 참수 작전에 나섭니다. 걸그룹을 동원한 셈입니다. 살로메가 춤을 너무 잘 춘 것 같습니다. 헤롯, 곧 삼촌인지 새아빠인지 헷갈리는 분이 내가 다 해줄께 라고 허세를 부립니다. 그 때 살로메는 엄마 헤로디아의 사주를 받고, 세례 요한의 목을 지금 당장, 여기서 가져다 달라고 요청합니다. 결국 악인 헤롯은 말로 왕복 5~6시간이 걸리는 마케루스 요새에 병사를 보내어 세례 요한의 목을 가져오게 합니다. 헤로디아라는 여자는 참으로 무섭습니다. 하나님의 말씀이 요한을 통해서 전해졌다면, 자신을 돌아보고 뉘우쳐야 함에도 오히려 두고 보자 하는 앙심을 품고 결국에는 세례 요한을 죽이고 맙니다.

The Wicked

Herod Antipas hears about Jesus and panics, thinking that John the Baptist, whom he had executed, has come back to life. A tetrarch was a ruler appointed by the Roman emperor to govern part of a region. Herod Antipas ruled Galilee and Perea from 4 B.C. to A.D. 39. He was the son of Herod the Great, who had tried to kill the infant Jesus. Herod Antipas later beheaded John the Baptist and even questioned Jesus (Luke 23:7).

Herod the Great had another son by a different mother, Herod Philip. He was married to Herodias, and they had a daughter named Salome. Herodias was actually the granddaughter of Herod the Great. Even at this point, the family situation was already morally tangled.

But it went even further. While visiting Rome, Herod Antipas became involved with Herodias, his brother’s wife. Herodias left her husband, who held no royal office, and remarried Herod Antipas, her brother-in-law.

When the righteous John the Baptist saw this, he rebuked them based on Scripture (v. 4). Enraged, Herodias incited Herod to imprison John in the fortress of Machaerus, one of the three major fortresses of Judea. Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the people, who regarded him as a prophet, so he refrained.

Herod was cunning and crafty like a fox (Luke 13:32). He was indecisive and more concerned about public opinion than about God (v. 5). He was boastful, even promising half his kingdom (v. 7). Ultimately, he killed John to save face (v. 9). Though Herod feared John, recognizing that his words were from God, it was Herodias who harbored deep resentment. She was wicked among the wicked.

On Herod’s birthday (v. 6), Herodias had already planned everything. She even used her daughter as part of her scheme. Salome’s dance pleased Herod greatly. In his pride—whether as her uncle or stepfather—he made a reckless promise to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, Salome demanded that John the Baptist’s head be brought to her at once. In the end, Herod sent soldiers on a journey of several hours to Machaerus to carry out the execution.

Herodias is a terrifying figure. Instead of repenting when God’s word confronted her through John, she nursed her grudge and ultimately had him killed.

의인들

이들과는 대조되는 사람이 의인 세례 요한입니다. 의인의 삶에는 어떤 특징이 있습니까?

먼저 능력이 나타나는 삶입니다.

헤롯은 예수의 소문을 듣고, 세례 요한이 살아났다고 두려워했습니다. 악인이 보기에도 세례 요한은 능력이 있었던 자였습니다. 그런데 그의 능력이 무엇이었습니까? 악당을 초능력으로 물리치고, 천군천사를 동원할 수 있는 신비로운 힘이 아니었습니다. 그의 능력은 초고위 제사장 가문이면서도 광야에 나가 약대 털옷을 입고, 메뚜기와 석청을 먹는 삶이었습니다. 그렇습니다. 성도(의인)의 능력은 병을 고치고, 기적을 일으키는 것이 아닙니다. 의인의 능력은 거룩한 삶입니다. 그것을 볼 때 악인들은 의인을 두려워합니다.

다음은 의를 선포하는 삶입니다.

의인의 삶은 공의와 정의를 추구하는 삶이고, 의롭고 거룩한 삶입니다. 불의를 보았을 때는 참지 못하고 반드시 무엇이 옳은 것인지를 말해야 합니다.

마지막으로 의인의 삶은 고난 받는 삶입니다.

의인의 삶은 하나님께서 지켜주시고 보호하시고 승리하게 하신다는 것이 성경의 약속이지만, 반면에 그와 동일한 무게로 의인이 당할 고난에 대해서 강력하게 주장하는 것이 성경입니다. 세례 요한을 보면 의인은 고난 정도가 아니라, 순교까지 할 수 있습니다.

The Righteous

In contrast stands the righteous John the Baptist. What characterizes the life of the righteous?

1. A Life Marked by Power

When Herod heard about Jesus, he feared that John had risen from the dead. Even the wicked recognized that John was a man of power. But what kind of power did he have? It was not supernatural strength to defeat villains or command angelic armies. His power was seen in his holy life—though born into a high priestly family, he chose to live in the wilderness, wearing camel’s hair and eating locusts and wild honey.

Yes, the power of the righteous is not in healing the sick or performing miracles. The power of the righteous is a holy life. When the wicked see such holiness, they are afraid.

2. A Life that Proclaims Righteousness

The righteous pursue justice and holiness. When they see injustice, they cannot remain silent. They must speak what is right.

3. A Life that Suffers

The Bible promises that God protects and ultimately grants victory to the righteous. Yet, with equal weight, it strongly affirms that the righteous will suffer. In John the Baptist’s case, suffering meant martyrdom.

오늘 본문에는 또 다른 의인이 등장합니다. 이분이야 말로 진짜 의인입니다. 의인은 없나니 하나도 없다고 성경은 말합니다. 왜 마태는 예수님이 고향에서 배척 받으신 사건 후에 세례 요한의 순교를 기록했을까요? 어쩌면 예수님의 앞 길을 예비하는 요한의 행적이 곧 예수의 미래가 아닐까요? 의인의 결국은 하나님을 위하여 죽기까지 순종하는 것, 핍박 받는 것입니다. 예수님처럼 말입니다. 나는 의인의 그린마일을 걷기 원합니까? 악인의 그린마일을 걷기 원합니까?

In today’s passage, another righteous One appears—the truly Righteous One. Scripture says that there is no one righteous, not even one. Why does Matthew record John’s martyrdom right after Jesus was rejected in His hometown? Perhaps John’s path, preparing the way for Jesus, foreshadows Jesus’ own future. The end of the righteous is obedience to God—even unto death—and persecution, just like Jesus.

Which green mile do I want to walk—the green mile of the righteous, or the green mile of the wicked?
