5:17 내가 율법이나 선지자를 폐하러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라 폐하러 온 것이 아니요 완전하게 하려 함이라

5:18 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 천지가 없어지기 전에는 율법의 일점 일획도 결코 없어지지 아니하고 다 이루리라

5:19 그러므로 누구든지 이 계명 중의 지극히 작은 것 하나라도 버리고 또 그같이 사람을 가르치는 자는 천국에서 지극히 작다 일컬음을 받을 것이요 누구든지 이를 행하며 가르치는 자는 천국에서 크다 일컬음을 받으리라

5:20 내가 너희에게 이르노니 너희 의가 서기관과 바리새인보다 더 낫지 못하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

5:21 옛 사람에게 말한 바 살인치 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

5:22 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고 형제를 대하여 라가라 하는 자는 공회에 잡혀가게 되고 미련한 놈이라 하는 자는 지옥 불에 들어가게 되리라

Murder

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

5:23 그러므로 예물을 제단에 드리려다가 거기서 네 형제에게 원망들을 만한 일이 있는 것이 생각나거든

5:24 예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 형제와 화목하고 그 후에 와서 예물을 드리라

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

5:25 너를 고발하는 자와 함께 길에 있을 때에 급히 사화하라 그 고발하는 자가 너를 재판관에게 내어주고 재판관이 옥리에게 내어주어 옥에 가둘까 염려하라

5:26 진실로 네게 이르노니 네가 한 푼이라도 남김이 없이 다 갚기 전에는 결단코 거기서 나오지 못하리라

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

                  어제 말씀부터 예수님의 산상수훈이 이어지고 있습니다. ‘하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다,’ 라고 말씀하셨던 예수님께서 하늘 나라의 백성으로 살아가는 의에 대해서 설명하십니다. 앞으로 여섯 가지 케이스 스터디를 통해서 말씀하실텐데요. 오늘은 그 첫 시간입니다. “하늘 나라에 들어가는 의 – 그 첫번째, 살인하지 말라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

We are continuing our journey through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. After declaring, "The Kingdom of Heaven is theirs," Jesus now begins to explain the "righteousness" required to live as citizens of that Kingdom. Over the next few days, we will look at six "case studies" Jesus presents. Today is the first: "The Righteousness That Enters the Kingdom: Do Not Murder."

                  메시야를 기다리며 구약의 시대를 살아가던 무리와 제자들에게 ‘의’란 무엇이었을까요? 그것은 곧 모세를 통해 받았던 율법이나, 하나님의 말씀을 대언하였던 선지자들의 말대로 사는 것이었을 것입니다. 바로 그런 율법과 선지서들을 연구하고 가르쳤던 이들이 바로 서기관과 바리새인들이었지요. 그들은 율법과 선지서들의 내용을 좀 더 구체적으로 삶에 적용할 수 있도록 더 촘촘하게 유대인들만의 전통을 만들었습니다. 지난 주일에 임은석 목사님이 설교하셨던 것 기억하실 것입니다. 안식일을 지키라는 계명에 가스불도 켜지 않고 엘리베이터 버튼도 누르지 않는 그런 전통 말입니다. 이들에게 의란 하나님의 말씀을 문자 그대로 지키는 것을 말하는 것이었습니다. 그런데 예수님께서는 이렇게 말씀하십니다. 20절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “내가 너희에게 이르노니 너희 의가 서기관과 바리새인보다 더 낫지 못하면 결코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라.” 예수님은 ‘천국에 들어가는 의’란 서기관과 바리새인들의 의보다 훨씬 더 큰 의라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 물론 이것은 궁극적으로 예수님의 십자가 대속으로 율법을 완전히 이루실 것을 말씀하는 것이기도 합니다. 그러나 지금 예수님 눈 앞에 모여 있는 이 무리들과 제자들에게 말씀하시는 훨씬 더 큰 의란 19절을 보니 바로 ‘행함’ 이라는 것입니다. “이를 행하며 가르치는 자는 천국에서 크다 일컬음을 받으리라” 말씀하지 않으십니까? 그렇다면 구체적으로 어떤 행함을 말씀하시는 것입니까? 예수님께서는 구약의 여섯 가지 계명을 예로 들어 천국에 들어가는 의를 설명하십니다.

1. Surpassing the Righteousness of the Pharisees

For the disciples and the crowds living in the Old Covenant era while waiting for the Messiah, what did "righteousness" mean? It meant living according to the Law given through Moses and the words of the prophets. The scribes and Pharisees were the experts who studied and taught these laws. They created a complex web of traditions to apply the Law to every specific detail of life.

As Pastor Eun-seok Lim mentioned in last Sunday's sermon, they created traditions like not turning on a stove or pressing an elevator button to keep the Sabbath. To them, righteousness was about obeying the letter of the Law.

However, Jesus says something shocking in verse 20 (Let’s read together):

"For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."

Jesus is saying that the righteousness required for the Kingdom is much greater than that of the religious elite. Ultimately, this points to Jesus Himself fulfilling the Law through the Cross. But for the crowd standing before Him, Jesus explains that this "greater righteousness" is found in "doing"—in the actual practice of the heart. As verse 19 says: "Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

                  그 첫번째입니다, 21절. “살인하지 말라… 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나” 분명 율법은 “누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라” 라고 명시하고 있습니다. 예수님도 “너희가 들었으나” 라고 확인하시지요. 하지만 예수님은 서기관이나 바리새인들처럼 율법을 지키는 것 만을 말씀하지 않으십니다. “너희가 들었으나,” 22절 “형제에게 노하는 자마다, 라가라 하는 자는, 미련한 놈이라 하는 자는”  분명 율법은 “살인하지 말라” 였는데 형제에게 화를 내는 것 만으로도 재판을 받게 될 것이라고 하십니다. 무엇을 말씀하시려는 것입니까? 바로 예수님께서 말씀하시는 더 큰 의란 율법을 문자 그대로 지키는 것에 있는 것이 아니라 바로 그 율법을 주신 하나님의 뜻을 이 땅 가운데 행하는 것이라는 것입니다. 살인하지 말라는 하나님의 명령은 살인을 저지르지만 않으면 된다는 말이 아니라 하나님의 형상을 지닌 내 이웃을 존중하고 사랑하라는 하나님의 뜻을 행하라는 명령인 것입니다. 그러면서 23-24절의 예화를 주십니다. 이건 말도 안되는 이야기에요. 지금 이 말씀을 갈릴리에서 사람들이 듣고 있습니다. 성전이 있는 예루살렘은 편도 일주일 거리입니다. 번제단에 바칠 가축을 데리고 일주일이 걸려서 제단 앞까지 왔는데 “네 형제에게 원망들을 만한 일이 생각나거든” 어떻게 하라고 하십니까? 돌아가서 화해하고 다시 와서 마저 번제를 드리라고 하십니다. 말도 안되는 말씀을 하고 계시지요. 하지만 이 말씀은 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 것이 얼마나 중요한 일인지를 강조하고 계시는 말씀이기도 합니다. 25-26절은 또한 그 뜻을 지체치말고 행해야 함을 강조하십니다. 25절 “너를 고발하는 자와 함께 있을 때에 급히 사화하라” 그렇지 않으면 하나님의 심판을 26절의 말씀과 같이 피할 수 없을 것이라고 말씀하고 계시는 것이지요.

2. The Heart of the Command: Beyond the Letter

Jesus uses the first of six commandments to illustrate this. Verse 21 says: "You have heard that it was said... ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’" Jesus confirms what they have heard. But He doesn't stop at the external act. In verse 22, He says: "But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, or says ‘Raca’ (an insult), or calls them a ‘fool’ will be in danger of the fire of hell."

What is Jesus saying? The "greater righteousness" is not just about avoiding the physical act of murder; it is about fulfilling the will of God who gave the command. The command "Do not murder" isn't just a restriction on killing; it is a command to respect and love your neighbor, who is made in the image of God.

3. The Priority of Reconciliation

Then, Jesus gives a radical illustration in verses 23-24. Think about the context: Jesus is speaking to people in Galilee. Jerusalem, where the Temple stood, was about a week’s journey away on foot.

Jesus says: Imagine you have traveled an entire week with your livestock for sacrifice. You are finally standing at the altar in Jerusalem, and you remember that your brother has something against you. What should you do? Jesus says: Leave your sacrifice right there, walk back a week to reconcile, and then walk another week back to finish your offering.

This sounds almost impossible! But Jesus is emphasizing that doing God’s will—which is reconciliation—is more important than the religious ritual itself. He then stresses the urgency of this in verses 25-26, urging us to settle matters quickly with our adversaries before judgment comes.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서 말씀하신 하늘 나라에 들어가는 의. 그것은 율법을 문자 그대로 지키는데 있는 것이 아니라 그 율법 가운데 있는 하나님의 뜻을 이 땅에서 행하는 것에 있습니다. 그래서 하나님 나라의 의와 사랑이 우리를 통하여 이 땅 가운데 임하는 것입니다. 우리의 힘이 아닌 예수님이 이루신 하나님의 의로 오늘 하루 하나님의 뜻을 여러분의 삶의 터전 가운데 행하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.

[Conclusion]

The righteousness that enters the Kingdom of Heaven is not about legalistic perfection. It is about embodying God’s heart in our earthly lives. Through us, God’s righteousness and love should manifest in this world.

We cannot do this by our own strength, but through the righteousness of Christ. I bless you in the name of the Lord to be those who carry out God’s will—honoring and reconciling with your neighbors—in your homes and workplaces today. Amen.
