20260121 [새벽묵상] 복있는 자여, 빛을 비추어라 | Blessed Are You, Shine Your Light (마/Mt 5:17~26)

1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn,

    for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

    for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart,

    for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

[Introduction]

Today’s passage marks the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount—the core teachings Jesus gave to His disciples and the crowds on the mountainside. Based on the message of the Beatitudes and the metaphors of salt and light, I want to share a message titled: "Blessed Are You, Shine Your Light."

1. The Beatitudes: A Message for the Ordinary

Verse 1 begins by saying, "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down." Who were these people in the "crowd"? If we look at the preceding verses (4:23-25), we see that Jesus was healing every disease and sickness among the people, and large crowds followed Him. These were ordinary people—weak, sick, and living as a conquered nation under Roman rule.

The very first words Jesus spoke to them were these (Let’s read verse 3 together):

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

We can interpret "poor in spirit" theologically as those who recognize their spiritual poverty and rely entirely on God. We can define "those who mourn" as those who grieve over sin and worldly injustice. "The meek" and "those who hunger for righteousness" also have deep theological meanings.

However, I believe Jesus wasn't just speaking to their spiritual state. Their spirits were "poor" because their reality was exhausting. They were "mourning" because they were in difficult situations with no one to comfort them. When Jesus says the "meek"—or the "lowly"—are blessed, He is speaking directly to them. Why do they hunger and thirst for righteousness? Is it not because they are in unfair situations and long for God’s justice?

The world says the rich and the powerful are "blessed." The world ignores the mourning and the grievances of the weak. Yet, Jesus looks at these ordinary, struggling people and calls them "Blessed." He declares that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them. He is proclaiming that through Him, the Kingdom of God has arrived for them, right here and right now.

What kind of Kingdom is this that starts with such ordinary people?

  • It is a kingdom of those who show mercy.

  • It is a kingdom of those who are pure in heart and look toward God.

  • It is a kingdom of peacemakers who bring harmony to a divided world.

  • It is a kingdom of those willing to endure persecution for the sake of righteousness. Jesus calls these people truly blessed.

2. Salt and Light: Reflecting His Glory

Then Jesus says, "You are the salt." In the Old Testament, salt often symbolized God’s unchanging covenant. Jesus is saying, "You stand in this world as the people of God’s eternal covenant." The Kingdom of Heaven expands as God’s reign and blessing flow through His people to the rest of the world.

He continues, "You are the light of the world." In chapter 4:16, we saw that Jesus is the Great Light that dawned on those living in the land of the shadow of death. Now, Jesus tells us that we are the light.

Let’s read verse 16 together:

"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

[Conclusion]

Jesus did not say that the Kingdom of God begins with the powerful leaders of this world. He said it begins with the most ordinary people—people like us, whom the world might not notice.

We are the blessed ones. We are the covenant people of God who are called to manifest the Kingdom of Heaven on this earth. We must receive the light of Jesus and reflect it before others.

How do we shine that light? We shine it through our good deeds: by showing mercy, by keeping our hearts pure, by making peace, and by standing for righteousness even when it brings persecution.

I pray in the name of the Lord that all of you, who are already blessed, will go forth and shine your light in this world. Amen.
