3:1 그 때에 세례 요한이 이르러 유대 광야에서 전파하여 말하되

3:2 회개하라 천국이 가까이 왔느니라 하였으니

3:3 저는 선지자 이사야를 통하여 말씀하신 자라 일렀으되 광야에 외치는 자의 소리가 있어 가로되 너희는 주의 길을 준비하라 그의 오실 길을 곧게 하라 하였느니라

1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,

‘Prepare the way for the Lord,

    make straight paths for him.’”

3:4 이 요한은 낙타털 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽 띠를 띠고 음식은 메뚜기와 석청이었더라

3:5 이 때에 예루살렘과 온 유대와 요단 강 사방에서 다 그에게 나아와

3:6 자기들의 죄를 자복하고 요단 강에서 그에게 세례를 받더니

4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

3:7 요한이 많은 바리새인들과 사두개인들이 세례 베푸는 데로 오는 것을 보고 이르되 독사의 자식들아 누가 너희를 가르쳐 임박한 진노를 피하라 하더냐

3:8 그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고

3:9 속으로 아브라함이 우리 조상이라고 생각하지 말라 내가 너희에게 이르노니 하나님이 능히 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손이 되게 하시리라

3:10 이미 도끼가 나무 뿌리에 놓였으니 좋은 열매 맺지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 불에 던져지리라

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

어제로부터 예수님의 탄생과 유아기 이야기가 마무리되고 빠른 상황 전환이 일어났습니다. 예수님보다 6개월 먼저 태어났던 세례 요한은 어느덧 성인이 되어 유대 광야에서 사역을 시작했습니다. 그가 맡은 일은 구약 말씀에서 예언된대로 하늘나라에 들어가기 위해 회개하라는 메세지를 선포하는 것이었습니다. “외치는 자의 소리여 이르되 너희는 광야에서 여호와의 길을 예비하라 사막에서 우리 하나님의 대로를 평탄하게 하라 (사 40:3)”. 예수님이 등장하시고 활동하시면 그가 통치하는 하늘나라가 이 땅에 오게 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 예수님이 오시기 전 그에 합당한 준비를 위해 사람들에게 “회개하라” 외친 것이죠. 세례 요한의 선포를 통해 회개의 중요성을 오늘 새벽 묵상하길 원합니다.

As of yesterday, the story of Jesus’ birth and infancy has come to an end, and the narrative shifts quickly. John the Baptist, who was born six months before Jesus, has now grown into adulthood and begun his ministry in the Judean wilderness. The task entrusted to him was to proclaim the message foretold in the Old Testament: to repent in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. “A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God’” (Isaiah 40:3). When Jesus appears and begins His ministry, the kingdom of heaven that He rules comes to this earth. Therefore, before Jesus comes, John cried out to the people, “Repent,” calling them to make proper preparation. Through John the Baptist’s proclamation, let us reflect this morning on the importance of repentance.

먼저, 우리는 모두 참된 회개가 필요합니다.

당시 말라기 선지자 이후 400년이라는 공백기동안 이스라엘 백성들에게 신앙은 형식과 전통이라는 틀에 갇혀 있었습니다. 그들은 형식적으로 율법을 지켰고 습관적으로 예배를 했습니다. 진정 하나님을 향한 마음은 메말라져 있었습니다. 그렇기에 세례 요한은 외쳤습니다. “회개하라 천국이 가까이 왔느니라 (2절).” ‘천국’ 곧 ‘하나님 나라’가 가까이 왔기 때문에 회개로 반응해야 한다는 것입니다. 세례 요한의 이 말씀은 다른 어떤 이방인들을 위한 것이 아니었습니다. 오히려 하나님을 알고 말씀을 아는 하나님이 선택하신 백성이라고하는 이스라엘을 위한 말이었습니다. 회개는 죄악의 것들에서 돌이켜 하늘나라의 가치를 받아들이고 하나님의 방식으로 바뀌는 것입니다. 참된 회개는 삶의 변화라는 열매로 나타납니다. 그렇게 하는 자가 하나님의 나라의 백성으로 합당한 자가 됩니다.

First, we all need true repentance.During the 400-year period of silence after the prophet Malachi, the faith of the Israelites became trapped in the framework of formality and tradition. They kept the Law outwardly and worshiped out of habit, but their hearts toward God had grown dry. That is why John the Baptist cried out, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (v. 2). Because the kingdom of heaven—God’s kingdom—was near, the proper response was repentance. This message of John was not directed to Gentiles. Rather, it was spoken to Israel, the people chosen by God who knew Him and knew His Word. Repentance means turning away from sin, embracing the values of the kingdom of heaven, and being transformed to live according to God’s ways. True repentance bears the fruit of a changed life. Such people are worthy to be called citizens of God’s kingdom.

그렇다면 우리는 진정 참된 회개를 했습니까?

세례 요한의 말을 듣고 많은 이들이 그에게 나아와 죄를 자복하고 그에게서 물세례를 받았습니다 (4-5절).  그러나 요단강으로 몰려온 자들 중에서 바리새인들과 사두개인들도 있었는데 그들은 달랐습니다. 그들은 전혀 회개를 하고자 하는 마음이 없었습니다. 오히려 아브라함의 자손이기에 구원에 대한 잘못된 확신을 가지고 있었습니다. 세례 요한은 그들을 ‘독사의 자식들’이라고 부르며 그들에게 ‘회개에 합당한 열매를 맺으라’고 외쳤습니다. 과연 세례 요한은 진정으로 이 자들을 미워해서 독사의 자식들이라는 악담을 퍼부었을까요? 저는 아니라고 봅니다. 충격 요법이라고 하죠. 때로는 현실을 직시해야되는 때가 있습니다. 빙빙 에둘러서 말했다가는 아무도 그들에게 상황의 심각성과 회개의 필요성을 깨닫게 하지 못했을 것입니다. 누군가가 나에게 ‘독사의 자식’이라고 권면을 했다고 해봅시다. 언제 이 말이 충격적일 것 같습니까? 평소에 내 스스로 ‘나는 좀 괜찮은 사람이야’라고 생각했다면 그 말을 들었을 때 충격적이지 않겠습니까? 그러니 여러분 우리 평소에 잘 연습해 놓읍시다. “나는 예수님 없이는 아무 것도 아닙니다. 나는 죄인입니다. 구세주가 필요한 존재입니다.”

So then, have we truly repented? Many people heard John’s words, came to him, confessed their sins, and were baptized by him in water (vv. 4–5). But among those who flocked to the Jordan River were also Pharisees and Sadducees, and they were different. They had no intention of repenting at all. Instead, they held a false assurance of salvation simply because they were descendants of Abraham. John the Baptist called them “a brood of vipers” and cried out to them to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” Did John truly hate them and hurl insults by calling them a brood of vipers? I don’t think so. It was shock therapy, so to speak. Sometimes people need to face reality head-on. If he had spoken gently and indirectly, no one would have helped them realize the seriousness of their situation or the necessity of repentance. Imagine someone saying to you, “You brood of vipers.” When would that be shocking? Wouldn’t it be shocking if, in your everyday life, you thought to yourself, “I’m a pretty decent person”? So, brothers and sisters, let us practice this mindset daily: “Without Jesus, I am nothing. I am a sinner. I am someone in need of a Savior.”

마지막으로 회개의 복음을 들으십시오.

10절에 “이미 도끼가 나무뿌리에 놓였으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 불에 던져지리라”라는 무시무시한 말씀이 나옵니다. 즉 회개 없는 삶은 심판을 피할 수 없다는 경고입니다. 그러나 한편으로는 소망적입니다. 도끼가 뿌리에 놓였지만 아직 그 나무는 찍혀 불에 던져지지 않았습니다. 여전히 하나님은 우리에게 회개의 기회를 주시고 우리 모두가 돌아오기를 기다리고 계십니다. 여러분 우리 모두 회개합시다. 삶의 가치와 방향을 하나님께로 돌이켜 삶 가운데 사랑을, 거룩을, 용서를, 섬김을 선택합시다. 오늘 새벽 우리의 삶을 재점검하고 회개하여 구원의 확신을 얻으시기를 축복드립니다.

Finally, hear the gospel of repentance.In verse 10, we encounter these frightening words: “The ax is already laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” This is a warning that a life without repentance cannot escape judgment. Yet at the same time, it is a message of hope. Although the ax is laid at the root, the tree has not yet been cut down and thrown into the fire. God is still giving us an opportunity to repent, patiently waiting for all of us to return to Him. Therefore, let us all repent. Let us turn the values and direction of our lives back to God, choosing love, holiness, forgiveness, and service in our daily living. I bless you that this morning, as we reexamine our lives and repent, you may gain assurance of salvation.
