[Two Blind Men Receive Sight]

29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

20:32 예수께서 머물러 서서 그들을 불러

32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

20:33 이르시되 너희에게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐 이르되 주여 우리 눈 뜨기를 원하나이다

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”

20:34 예수께서 불쌍히 여기사 그들의 눈을 만지시니 곧 보게 되어 그들이 예수를 따르니라

34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

오늘 본문은 예수님이 맹인을 고치는 사건입니다. 마태복음에서 이미 여러번 예수님께서 맹인을 치유하시는 사건이 묘사됐는데요. 오늘 나오는 맹인 사건은 예수님이 예루살렘을 향해 가는 여정에서 마지막 도시인 여리고를 떠날 때 벌어집니다. 그리고 무엇보다 바로 어제 본문에서 예수님은 제자들에게 인자가 겪을 수난과 죽음에 대해서 예고했었죠. 그럼에도 제자들은 세상의 권력에 눈이 멀어 예수님이 알려주고자 하는 당신의 정체와 목적을 깨닫지 못했습니다. 예수님의 나라에 대한 오해와 높은 자리를 향한 욕망을 가진 제자들과 비교했을 때, 오늘 나오는 이 맹인들이 시사하는 바가 큽니다.

Today’s passage describes an event in which Jesus heals the blind. In the Gospel of Matthew, there are already several accounts of Jesus healing blind people. However, the incident in today’s passage takes place as Jesus is leaving Jericho, the last city on His journey toward Jerusalem. Most importantly, in yesterday’s passage Jesus had foretold to His disciples the suffering and death that the Son of Man would face. Yet the disciples, blinded by their desire for worldly power, failed to understand the true identity and purpose Jesus was trying to reveal to them. When we compare the disciples—who misunderstood Jesus’ kingdom and desired positions of honor—with the blind men in today’s passage, the message becomes very significant.

1)    맹인들이 잘한 일

예수님 일행이 여리고를 떠나면서 큰 무리가 그들을 뒤따릅니다. 그런데 예상치 못한 일이 벌어집니다. 바로 두 맹인이 길가에 앉아있다가 예수님이 지나가신다함을 듣고 소리를 지른 까닭인데요. 이들의 외침이 눈에 들어옵니다. “주여 우리를 불쌍히 여기소서 다윗의 자손이여 (30b절).” 무리들이 이들을 강하게 비난하며 꾸짖음에도 불구하고 이들은 더욱 절박히 예수님을 붙잡는 모습이 31절에 나옵니다. 무엇이 이들을 이렇게 절실하게 만들었을까요? 여기서 우리는 맹인들이 잘한 일 두 가지를 살펴볼 수 있습니다.

첫째, 두 맹인은 예수님을 ‘다윗의 자손’, 즉 메시아로 고백했습니다. 앞으로 오실 메시아가 다윗의 자손이라 예언됨은 구약 성경 여러 곳에서 살펴볼 수 있습니다. “여호와의 말씀이니라 보라 때가 이르리니 내가 다윗에게 한 의로운 가지를 일으킬 것이라 그가 왕이 되어 지혜롭게 다스리며 세상에서 정의와 공의를 행할 것이며 (렘 23:5).” 이 예언의 메시아가 예수님임을 믿었기 때문에 이들은 메시아라면 자신들의 이 질병을 고치실 수 있으리라 확신했습니다. 이것은 예수님을 한 선지자 혹은 선생님 정도로 생각했던 다른 사람들과 큰 차이를 보입니다. 그리고 주님앞에 이들은 부끄러울 것이 없습니다. 자신의 비참한 현실을 인정하는 겸손과 메시아의 능력에 대한 확신이 이들의 믿음을 보여줍니다.

둘째, 이들은 무리의 꾸짖음에도 굴복하지 않았습니다. 예수님 일행을 따르던 무리들은 사회적 약자인 맹인들을 마치 성가신 존재인 양 취급하며 강하게 꾸짖었습니다. 그러나 예수님의 존재와 능력에 대한 확신이 있던 이들은 이 기회를 쉽게 포기할 수 없었습니다. 이번이 아니면 다시는 예수님을 만날 수 없으리라는 절박함에 평소와는 다르게 주위의 눈치나 압박에도 굴하지 않고 더욱 큰소리로 예수님을 불렀습니다. 우리 삶 가운데 우리를 낙심시키고 조용하게 하려는 ‘무리’는 무엇이 있는지 생각해 보게 만듭니다. 그 어떤 외부로의 압박에도 굴하지 않고 예수님께 나아갈 절박함이 우리에게는 있습니까? 두 눈이 보이지 않는 맹인들보다도 더 맹인같이 예수님을 알아보지 못하고, 예수님이 고난을 받을 때 쉽게 뒤돌아 떠나는 무리와 같은 존재가 되지 않기를 간절히 원합니다.

1) What the Blind Men Did Right

As Jesus and His followers were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed them. Unexpectedly, something happened. Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they began to cry out. Their cry stands out: “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” (v.30). Even though the crowd strongly rebuked and scolded them, verse 31 shows that they cried out even more desperately to Jesus. What made them so earnest? Here we can observe two things that the blind men did well.

First, the two blind men confessed Jesus as the “Son of David,” that is, the Messiah. The Old Testament prophesies in many places that the coming Messiah would be a descendant of David. For example: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land” (Jeremiah 23:5). Because they believed that Jesus was this promised Messiah, they were confident that He could heal their disease. This set them apart from many others who merely thought of Jesus as a prophet or teacher. Before the Lord they had nothing to be ashamed of. Their humility in acknowledging their miserable condition, combined with their confidence in the Messiah’s power, revealed their faith.

Second, they did not give in to the rebukes of the crowd. The crowd following Jesus treated these socially weak blind men as if they were a nuisance and harshly scolded them. But because they were convinced of who Jesus was and of His power, they could not easily give up this opportunity. With the desperate thought that they might never see Jesus again, they ignored the pressure and judgment around them and cried out to Him even louder. This makes us reflect on what “crowds” in our lives discourage us and try to silence us. Do we have the same desperation to come to Jesus despite any external pressure? May we not become like the crowd who, though they could see with their eyes, failed to recognize Jesus and easily turned away when He faced suffering.

2)    예수님의 정체

이런 이들의 절박한 부르짖음을 예수님은 놓치지 않으시고 반응하십니다. 이것은 다시 한번 우리에게 예수님의 정체를 알려줍니다. 예수님은 소자들의 목소리에 귀를 기울이는 긍휼의 메시아이십니다. 세상의 권력을 누리기 위해 이 땅에 오신 것이 아니라 죄인인 우리들의 영혼을 대속하기 위해 오신 분이십니다. 32절에 예수님은 걸음을 멈추고 그들을 불러 물어보십니다. “내가 너희에게 무엇을 해 주기 원하느냐?” 그에 대한 대답으로 맹인들은 33절에 “주여 우리의 눈 뜨기를 원하나이다”라고 즉시 대답합니다. 이들이 원하는 것은 돈도 먹는 것도 아니라 두 눈을 뜨는 것입니다. 예수님은 그들을 불쌍히 여기셨고, 그들의 눈을 만지시자 그들은 바로 보게됐습니다. 그리고 그들은 곧바로 예수님은 따랐습니다. 결국 예수님의 치유의 손길로 말미암아 두 맹인은 육신의 눈 뿐만 아니라 영의 눈 또한 밝아지는 역사를 경험합니다.

2) The Identity of Jesus

Jesus did not ignore their desperate cries but responded to them. This once again reveals who Jesus truly is. Jesus is the compassionate Messiah who listens to the voices of the lowly. He did not come to this world to enjoy worldly power, but to redeem the souls of sinners like us.

In verse 32, Jesus stopped and called them, asking, “What do you want me to do for you?” They immediately answered in verse 33, “Lord, we want our sight.” They did not ask for money or food, but for their eyes to be opened. Jesus had compassion on them, and when He touched their eyes, they immediately received their sight. Then they followed Him right away. Through Jesus’ healing touch, the two blind men experienced not only the opening of their physical eyes but also the opening of their spiritual eyes.

오늘 본문 말씀이 우리에게 주는 메시지는 확실합니다. 예수님은 구약에서 예언된 메시아시며 능력의 주님이십니다. 이 진리를 깨닫지 못하는 자는 진정 맹인이며, 이 진리를 깨달아 주님께 매달리는 자는 예수님의 긍휼을 경험하게 됩니다. 우리는 예수님의 정체를 정확히 알아야 합니다. 예수님이 누구신지는 변하지 않습니다. 다만 그것을 어떻게 받아들이는지는 각자의 선택입니다. 이 진리가 흔들리지 않는다면 우리의 삶 가운데 문제가 발생했을 때 그 문제를 예수님 앞으로 가져가는 우리의 자세는 맹인들과 같을 것 입니다. 절박하고 절실한 마음으로 예수님께 매달릴 것입니다. 우리들도 제자들처럼 헛되고 세상적인 것에 눈과 마음이 빼앗겨 있지는 않습니까? 진정 하나님이 우리가 보길 원하는 모습을 못 본척 모르는 척 하고 있지는 않습니까? 오늘 새벽 하나님께 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 볼 수 있는 능력과 은혜를 구합시다. 긍휼의 메시아는 소자들의 부르짖음에 귀를 기울이실 것입니다.

The message of today’s passage is clear. Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament and the Lord of power. Those who fail to recognize this truth are truly blind, but those who realize it and cling to the Lord will experience Jesus’ compassion. We must understand clearly who Jesus is. Jesus’ identity does not change. The only question is how each person chooses to respond to that truth. If this truth remains unshaken in our hearts, then when problems arise in our lives, we will bring them before Jesus just like the blind men did—clinging to Him with desperate and earnest faith.
