The Escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

2:14 요셉이 일어나서 밤에 아기와 그의 어머니를 데리고 애굽으로 떠나가

2:15 헤롯이 죽기까지 거기 있었으니 이는 주께서 선지자를 통하여 말씀하신 바 애굽으로부터 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이라

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

2:16 이에 헤롯이 박사들에게 속은 줄 알고 심히 노하여 사람을 보내어 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 기준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니

2:17 이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 말씀하신 바

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

2:18 라마에서 슬퍼하며 크게 통곡하는 소리가 들리니 라헬이 그 자식을 위하여 애곡하는 것이라 그가 자식이 없으므로 위로 받기를 거절하였도다 함이 이루어졌느니라

18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,

    weeping and great mourning,

Rachel weeping for her children

    and refusing to be comforted,

    because they are no more.”

2:19 헤롯이 죽은 후에 주의 사자가 애굽에서 요셉에게 현몽하여 이르되

2:20 일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 가라 아기의 목숨을 찾던 자들이 죽었느니라 하시니

The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”

2:21 요셉이 일어나 아기와 그 어머니를 데리고 이스라엘 땅으로 들어가니라

2:22 그러나 아켈라오가 그의 아버지 헤롯을 이어 유대의 임금 됨을 듣고 거기로 가기를 무서워하더니 꿈에 지시하심을 받아 갈릴리 지방으로 떠나가

2:23 나사렛이란 동네에 가서 사니 이는 선지자로 하신 말씀에 나사렛 사람이라 칭하리라 하심을 이루려 함이러라

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

                오늘 본문의 말씀은 동방박사가 떠난 뒤 예수님의 가족이 베들레헴에서 애굽으로, 또 애굽에서 나사렛으로 이동을 하는 모습을 적고 있습니다. 얼핏보면 이 이동이 단순히 예수님과 가족들에게 일어난 개인적인 피난 기록의 나열처럼 보입니다. 그러나 이 일련의 사건들을 통하여 마태가 말하고자 하는 것은 예수님께서 이스라엘에게 일어났었던 역사들을 반복하심으로 예수님이 곧 새 이스라엘이시다 라는 것입니다. 그래서 오늘은 “우리를 대표하여 완수하시는 하나님의 아들”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Today’s passage describes the journey of Jesus’ family moving from Bethlehem to Egypt, and then from Egypt to Nazareth, following the departure of the Magi. At a glance, this might seem like a mere list of personal travel records or a simple account of a family seeking refuge.

However, through this series of events, Matthew is making a profound theological statement: Jesus is the "New Israel." By retracing and repeating the history of Israel, Jesus identifies Himself with His people. Today, I want to share a message titled: "The Son of God Who Fulfills the Mission on Our Behalf."

                첫번째는 13-15절의 말씀입니다. 요셉이 꿈에 천사의 명령을 듣고 한밤 중에 급하게 애굽으로 피신하는 장면을 보여주고 있습니다. 그런데 이 상황을 가르켜 15절의 말씀은 “주께서 선지자를 통하여 말씀하신바 애굽으로부터 내 아들을 불렀다 함을 이루려 하심이라” 라고 전하고 있습니다. 이 말씀은 호세아서 11:1을 인용한 말씀으로서 원래 이 말씀은 하나님께서 이스라엘을 “내 아들”이라 부르시며 애굽에서 불러내셨던 사건을 가르키는 말입니다. 그런데 마태는 이 말씀을 인용하여 아기 예수님의 애굽 피난과 귀환을 마치 제2의 출애굽으로 묘사하고 있는 것입니다.

1. A Second Exodus (Verses 13-15)

In verses 13-15, we see Joseph receiving a command from an angel in a dream and fleeing to Egypt in the middle of the night. Matthew interprets this situation in verse 15: "And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'Out of Egypt I called my son.'"

This is a quote from Hosea 11:1. Originally, these words referred to the historical Exodus—the event where God called the nation of Israel, whom He named "My Son," out of Egypt. By applying this to Jesus, Matthew is portraying the infant Jesus’ flight and return as a "Second Exodus." He is showing that where Israel struggled, Jesus would prevail as the true Son.

                그 다음도 마찬가지입니다. 16절에 “헤롯이 박사들에게 속은 줄 알고.. 베들레헴과 그 모든 지경 안에 있는 사내아이를 박사들에게 자세히 알아본 그 때를 기준하여 두 살부터 그 아래로 다 죽이니” 라고 쓰고 있습니다. 자 이 말씀을 들으시면 가장 먼저 누가 떠오르십니까? 네 그렇습니다. 모세가 떠오르지요. 파라오가 유대 남자 아기들을 학살할 때에 모세가 극적으로 살아남아 이스라엘 백성의 구원자가 되었던 것을 기억하실 것입니다. 마치 헤롯이라는 새로운 파라오의 학살 속에서 모세보다 더 큰 구원자 되시는 예수님께서 그 구원의 역사를 완성하실 것을 은밀히 드러내고 있는 것입니다.

2. A Greater Moses (Verse 16)

In verse 16, we see Herod’s fury: "When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi... he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under."

Who comes to mind when you hear this? Naturally, we think of Moses. We remember how Pharaoh ordered the massacre of Hebrew baby boys, yet Moses was dramatically spared to become the deliverer of Israel. By placing Jesus in the middle of a similar massacre by a "New Pharaoh" (Herod), Matthew is subtly revealing that Jesus is the "Greater Moses" who will complete the ultimate work of salvation.

                또한 마태는 17-18절의 말씀을 통하여 베들레헴의 유아 학살의 고통을 선지자 예레미야의 말씀으로 해석합니다. 18절은 예레미야 31:15을 인용하여 라헬의 통곡을 언급하지요. 원래 이 말씀은 바벨론으로 끌려가는 이스라엘 자손들을 보며 슬퍼하는 식민지 백성이 겪는 고통을 상징합니다. 그러나 바로 그 다음 말씀인 예레미야 31:16-17의 말씀은 소망과 회복을 강조하지요. “네 눈물을 멈추어라…그들이 … 돌아오리라 … 너의 장래에 소망이 있을 것이라 … 여호와의 말씀이니라” 이는 이스라엘의 역사적인 슬픔과 고난이 예수님의 탄생 사건을 통해 자유케 됨과 소망으로 바뀔 것을 암시하는 것입니다.

3. From Exile to Hope (Verses 17-18)

Matthew then interprets the agony of this massacre through the words of the prophet Jeremiah. Verse 18 quotes Jeremiah 31:15, mentioning Rachel weeping for her children. Originally, this described the collective grief of a colonized people watching their children being dragged into Babylonian exile.

However, if we look at the very next verses—Jeremiah 31:16-17—the tone shifts to hope and restoration: "Restrain your voice from weeping... they will return... so there is hope for your descendants." This implies that the historical sorrow and suffering of Israel are being transformed into freedom and hope through the birth of Jesus.

                마지막으로 23절 말씀입니다. “나사렛이란 동네에 가서 사니 이는 선지자로 하신 말씀에 나사렛 사람이라 칭하리라 하심을 이루려 함이러라” 구약 성경에는 나사렛이라는 마을의 이름이 등장하지 않습니다. 그렇다면 이게 무슨 뜻인가? 히브리어로 나사렛과 똑같은 자음을 쓰는 단어가 있습니다. 히브리어로 “네체르” 라고 하는 이 단어는 그 뜻이 “가지”입니다. 메시아 예언을 대표하는 예언. 바로 이사야서 11:1, “이새의 줄기에서 한 싹이 나며 그 뿌리에서 한 가지가 나서 결실할 것이요” 즉, 다윗의 아버지인 이새의 자손, 즉 다윗의 자손 중에 한 왕이 날 것이다 라는 예언이지요. 예수님은 구약의 선지자들이 예언하였던 바로 그 메시야. 이스라엘을 향한 하나님의 모든 계획을 완수하시는 구원자이신 것입니다.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님의 자녀로서 부름 받았던 이스라엘은 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 이루지 못하였습니다. 그러나 구약의 모든 예언을 성취하시며 이 땅 가운데 오신 예수님께서는 새 이스라엘로서 그들이 실패하였던 하나님의 뜻을 그들을 대신하여 완수하시는 하나님의 아들이십니다. 그래서 예수님께서는 그들의, 또, 우리의 구원자이신 것입니다. 예수님을 통하여 우리의 이전의 실패들은 모두 지워졌습니다. 보혈의 피로 우리를 정결케 하시고 우리를 대표하여 하나님의 뜻을 완수하셨기에 우리는 하나님께 담대함으로 나아갈 수 있는 것입니다.

4. The Branch from Nazareth (Verse 23)

Finally, verse 23 says: "So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene." Interestingly, the name "Nazareth" does not appear in the Old Testament. So what does this mean?

In Hebrew, there is a word that shares the same consonants as "Nazareth": "Netzer" (), which means "Branch." This points directly to the famous Messianic prophecy in Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch (Netzer) will bear fruit." This confirms that Jesus is the very Messiah the prophets spoke of—the "Branch" from the line of David who would fulfill all of God’s plans for Israel.

[Conclusion]

Israel was called as God’s child, but they failed to fully live out God’s will. However, Jesus came as the New Israel. By fulfilling every prophecy and retracing their steps, He lived the perfect life that they—and we—could not live.

He is the Son of God who completed the mission on our behalf. Through Jesus, our past failures are washed away. Because He has purified us with His blood and fulfilled God’s will as our representative, we can now approach God with boldness and confidence.
