13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

5:16 누구든지 형제가 사망에 이르지 아니하는 죄 범하는 것을 보거든 구하라 그리하면 사망에 이르지 아니하는 범죄자들을 위하여 그에게 생명을 주시리라 사망에 이르는 죄가 있으니 이에 관하여 나는 구하라 하지 않노라

5:17 모든 불의가 죄로되 사망에 이르지 아니하는 죄도 있도다

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

5:18 하나님께로부터 난 자는 다 범죄하지 아니하는 줄을 우리가 아노라 하나님께로부터 나신 자가 그를 지키시매 악한 자가 그를 만지지도 못하느니라

18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

5:21 자녀들아 너희 자신을 지켜 우상에게서 멀리하라

21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

1885년 1월, 영국 서더크Southwark에 있는 뉴 파크 스트리트 교회 목사인 설교의 황태자 찰스 스펄전은 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

그리스도인이 연구해야 할 합당한 주제는 하나님의 본성입니다…

이 주제는 마음을 겸손하게 하고 확장시키는 한편, 크나큰 위안이 됩니다.

오! 그리스도를 묵상하면 모든 상처를 치유하는 치유제를 얻을 수 있습니다.

하나님을 아는 지식은 그야말로 가장 고상하며, 우리를 겸손하게 하고, 우리의 상처를 치유합니다.

하지만 하나님을 안다는 것은 그렇게 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 찬송가 336장 환난과 핍박 중에도 찬송시를 지은 프레드릭 파버Frederick Faber는 머리에는 어둠, 마음에는 햇빛이라고 말했습니다. 하나님을 아는 지식은 필요하지만, 그것은 머리로만 하는 것이 아님을 보여주는 글입니다. 하나님은 알되 전인격적으로 하나님을 알아가야 합니다. 지식과 경험, 감정과 의지의 적절한 조화를 이룰 때 그 지식은 참 지식이 되는 것입니다. 

사도 요한도 하나님을 아는 지식의 중요함을 분명히 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 자신의 편지의 마지막 단락에서 안다 라는 단어를 일곱 번이나 사용합니다. 그는 사랑하는 자신의 성도들에게 구원을 위하여 6가지 알아야 할 것들에 대해서 정리하여 알려줍니다. 

In January 1885, Charles Spurgeon—the "Prince of Preachers" and pastor of New Park Street Chapel in Southwark, England—proclaimed:

Knowledge of God is truly the most noble pursuit; it humbles us and heals our wounds. However, knowing God is not a simple task. Frederick Faber, the author of the hymn "Faith of Our Fathers," once described the spiritual journey as "darkness in the head, but sunshine in the heart." This reminds us that while knowledge of God is essential, it is not merely intellectual. We must know God with our entire being. True knowledge is found in the perfect harmony of intellect, experience, emotion, and will.

The Apostle John clearly understood the importance of this knowledge. In the final section of his letter, he uses the word "know" seven times. He summarizes six essential things his beloved saints must know regarding their salvation:

첫번째로 구원을 위하여 알아야 하는 지식은 믿는 자에게는 영생이 있다는 사실(13)입니다.

하나님과 아들은 믿는 것은 반드시 지식을 동반해야 합니다. 사도 요한이 요한 일서를 쓰는 목적이 바로 아들을 믿는 자들에게는 영생이 있음을 알게 하는 것입니다. 이것은 요한복음을 쓴 목적과도 동일합니다.

차이가 있다면 요한복음을 통해서 생명, 곧 구원을 얻게 하는 것이 목적이었다면, 요한일서는 구원받은 그 생명이 영원하다는 사실을 알게 하는 것입니다. 이것이 요한일서를 기록한 전체 목적이기도 합니다.

둘째로 알아야 할 지식은 그의 뜻대로 무엇이든지 구하면 들어주신다는 사실(14)입니다.

이것은 예수님이 마지막 만찬에서 하신 약속, 내 이름으로 무엇이든지 내게 구하면 내가 행하리라(요 14:14)

입니다. 진짜 아들을 믿고, 하나님 안에 거하는 자는 기도의 능력을 사용할 줄 알고, 그것을 체험하는 자입니다. 여기서 중요한 것은 그의 뜻대로 구하는 것입니다. 야고보는 우리가 얻지 못하는 이유는 구하지 않기 때문이고, 구하여도 얻지 못하는 이유는 정욕으로 잘못 구하기 때문이라고 말했습니다(약 2:3b~4).

그러므로 하나님의 뜻을 먼저 구하고 하는 기도는 100% 응답을 받는 것입니다.

대표적인 실례는 5만번 기도응답을 받은 죠지 뮬러George Müller 의 기도입니다. 그는 기도를 하기 전에 성경을 읽고 묵상한 후에 기도했다고 합니다. 반드시 하나님의 뜻을 구하고 기도한 것입니다.

1. Know that believers have eternal life (v. 13)

Believing in God and His Son must be accompanied by certain knowledge. John’s purpose in writing this epistle is to ensure that those who believe in the Son know they have eternal life. While the Gospel of John was written so that people might gain life (salvation), 1 John was written so that they might know that the life they have received is eternal.

2. Know that He hears us when we ask according to His will (v. 14)

This echoes Jesus’ promise at the Last Supper: "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it" (John 14:14). A true believer who abides in God knows how to use the power of prayer and experiences its reality. The key here is asking according to His will. James tells us we do not have because we do not ask, or we ask wrongly to spend it on our passions (James 4:2–3). When we seek God’s will first, our prayers receive a 100% response rate. George Müller, who famously received 50,000 recorded prayer answers, always meditated on Scripture before praying to ensure he was aligned with God’s heart.

셋째로 알아야 할 지식은 이 놀라운 기도의 능력을 죄 범한 자를 구하는 용도로 긴급하게 사용해야 한다는 사실입니다(16~17). 우리의 기도가 범죄자들이 회개하고 돌이켜 하나님의 생명을 얻게 하는 능력이 있다는 것입니다(16). 놀랍지 않습니까? 왜 우리는 이런 기도의 능력을 사용하지 않고 있는 것일까요? 그런데 요한은 죄를 사망에 이르는 죄와 그렇지 않은 죄로 구분(16-17)합니다. 어떤 죄가 사망에 이르지 않고, 어떤 죄가 사망에 이르는 죄일까요? 예수님은 성령을 모독하는 것은 사하심을 얻지 못한다(마 12:31)고 말씀 하셨습니다. 예수님의 말씀과 사도 요한의 말을 종합해 보면 성령을 모독하는 죄와 사망에 이르는 죄가 같은 것이라고 보여집니다. 요한 역시도 그러한 자를 위해 구하는 기도를 할 필요가 없다고 말합니다(16b).

그러니까 성령 훼방죄는 예수를 믿지 않는 것입니다. 결국 이 말씀의 의미는 영지주의자들과 같은 신앙과 주장을 유지하는 자들은 결국 죄 사함을 받을 수 없다는 의미입니다. 그러한 자들은 몇 번 권면을 한 후에는 상대하지 않는 것(마 18:17) 이 옳습니다.

요한은 혹시라도 성도들이 사망에 이르는 죄만 경계할 것을 대비하여 다시 한번 확인합니다. 모든 죄가 불의라는 사실을, 하지만 성령훼방죄, 곧 사망에 이르는 죄 외에는 모든 죄는 회개하면 용서 받을 수 있기에 사망에 이르지 않는 죄입니다.

3. Know that prayer should be used urgently to restore those who sin (vv. 16–17)

Our prayers have the power to bring repentance and life to those who have stumbled. John distinguishes between "sin that leads to death" and "sin that does not." Jesus taught that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven (Matt 12:31). Combining these teachings, it appears that the "sin that leads to death" is the persistent rejection of the Holy Spirit’s testimony regarding Jesus—essentially, the unbelief and false teachings of the Gnostics. While we should pray for those who stumble, those who willfully reject the Gospel after many warnings should be left to God's judgment. However, John reminds us that all unrighteousness is sin, but most can be forgiven through repentance.

넷째로 알아야 할 지식은 하나님께로 난 자는 다 범죄하지 않는다는 사실(18)입니다.

이 말의 의미는 성도는 완전하게 범죄하지 않는 것이 아닌, 죄를 멀리하려는 기본적인 태도와 혹시 범죄했을 경우 진정으로 하나님 앞에 회개하는 것을 의미하는 것이라고 이미 설명했습니다. 여기서 사도 요한은 한가지 지식을 더합니다. 성도들이 그렇게 범죄하지 않는 이유는 하나님께로부터 나신 자, 곧 예수 그리스도께서 우리를 지키시기 때문입니다. 그러므로 악한 자, 곧 사탄은 우리를 만지지도 못합니다(18).

이 얼마나 감격스럽고, 놀라운 소식입니까? 여기서 발견하는 영적인 지식은 먼저 우리의 범죄가 사탄과 무관하지 않다는 사실입니다. 종종 믿는 자들이 범죄하는 이유는 하나님 앞에서 연약함 때문입니다. 연약하여 쉽게 사탄의 유혹에 굴복하는 것입니다.

그러므로 더 강한 주의 용사가 되도록 최선을 다해야 합니다. 강한 용사가 되는 길은 유일합니다. 하나님의 전신갑주(엡 6;11)를 입는 비결 밖에는 없습니다. 기도와 말씀, 예배와 찬양으로 믿음의 방패와 성령의 검을 소유해야 합니다. 구원의 투구와 평안의 복음의 신, 의의 흉배를 붙여야 합니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리는 승리합니다. 하나님은 그의 능력으로 우리를 보호하십니다. 무엇을 두려워하겠습니까?

4. Know that those born of God do not continue to sin (v. 18)

This does not mean believers reach sinless perfection, but rather that they possess a fundamental attitude of hating sin and a heart of true repentance when they fall. John adds a vital detail: we are kept safe because the One born of God (Jesus Christ) protects us. Therefore, the evil one cannot touch us. Our struggle with sin is often tied to our weakness, making us susceptible to temptation. To stand firm, we must put on the full armor of God (Eph 6:11)—the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit, and the helmet of salvation—through prayer, Word, and worship.

다섯째로 알아야 할 지식은 하나님의 자녀는 하나님께 속했고, 세상은 악한 자에게 속했음(19)을 알아야 합니다. 이것은 반드시 하나님이 마지막 날에 양과 염소를 구별하는 심판이 있음을 전제로 합니다. 계속해서 사도가 말하던 우리의 소속의 문제입니다.

마지막으로 알아야 할 지식은 우리가 하나님을 아는 것은 참된 자이신 예수께서 주신 은혜(20)입니다.

또한 우리는 참 하나님이시자 영생이신 예수 안에 있습니다. 얼마나 감사하고 안정이 되는 말씀인지 모르겠습니다. 그러므로 우상숭배와 같은 영지주의자들의 사상을 멀리(21)해야 합니다. 이런 귀한 은혜를 이단들의 사상에 빠져 잃어버릴 수는 없습니다. 반드시 지켜야 하는 것입니다.

하나님을 아는 지식은 참으로 귀하여 우리는 그것을 얻기 위해서 최선을 다해야 합니다. 말씀을 읽고 묵상하고 기도하고, 하지만 그 귀한 지식은 그렇게 해서 얻어진 것이 아닙니다. 사실은 우리가 하나님을 알게 된 것은 예수 그리스도를 통해서 주신 하나님의 은혜입니다. 이 사실을 알게 되면 얼마나 감사함이 넘치는지요, 또한 이 사실을 묵상하면 모든 두려움이 사라집니다. 어차피 우리가 아직 죄인이었을 때 우리를 택하신 하나님께서 우리를 끝까지 지키고 보호해 주실 것이기 때문입니다.

우리 앞에 있는 문제들이 아니라 하나님의 이러한 성품에 대해서 날마다 묵상합시다. 예수 그리스도에 대해서 더 관심을 가집시다. 그럴 때 우리의 삶은 기쁨과 풍요가 넘칠 것입니다. 우리의 마음이 겸손해지고, 확장되어지며, 상처가 치유되는 놀라운 은혜의 시간이 되기를 원합니다.

5. Know that we belong to God, while the world lies in the power of the evil one (v. 19)

This knowledge is based on the reality of final judgment, where God will separate the sheep from the goats. It is a matter of "belonging." We must be clear about whose side we are on.

6. Know that our understanding comes from Jesus, the True One (v. 20)

Our ability to know God is a gift of grace from Jesus Christ. We abide in Him who is the true God and eternal life. Because we have this security, we must keep ourselves from "idols" (v. 21)—including the false ideologies of the Gnostics. We cannot afford to lose this precious grace to worldly deceptions.

Closing Reflection

The knowledge of God is so precious that we must do our utmost to attain it through reading, meditation, and prayer. Yet, we must remember that this knowledge isn't earned; it is a gift of grace given through Jesus Christ.

When we realize this, our hearts overflow with gratitude and fear vanishes. The God who chose us while we were still sinners will protect us to the end. Let us meditate daily on the character of God rather than the problems before us. As we focus on Christ, our lives will abound in joy, our minds will be humbled and expanded, and we will experience the grace that heals every wound.
