4:1 사랑하는 자들아 영을 다 믿지 말고 오직 영들이 하나님께 속하였나 분별하라 많은 거짓 선지자가 세상에 나왔음이라

4:2 이로써 너희가 하나님의 영을 알지니 곧 예수 그리스도께서 육체로 오신 것을 시인하는 영마다 하나님께 속한 것이요

4:3 예수를 시인하지 아니하는 영마다 하나님께 속한 것이 아니니 이것이 곧 적그리스도의 영이니라 오리라 한 말을 너희가 들었거니와 지금 벌써 세상에 있느니라

On Denying the Incarnation

1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

4:4 자녀들아 너희는 하나님께 속하였고 또 그들을 이기었나니 이는 너희 안에 계신 이가 세상에 있는 자보다 크심이라

4:5 그들은 세상에 속한 고로 세상에 속한 말을 하매 세상이 그들의 말을 듣느니라

4:6 우리는 하나님께 속하였으니 하나님을 아는 자는 우리의 말을 듣고 하나님께 속하지 아니한 자는 우리의 말을 듣지 아니하나니 진리의 영과 미혹의 영을 이로써 아느니라

4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

요한 계시록은 소아시아 지역의 일곱교회에게 주님이 칭찬과 책망을 하는 것으로 시작합니다. 첫번째 교회인 에베소 교회는 예수님께 자칭 사도라 하는 자를 시험하여 그의 거짓된 것을 드러낸 것(계 2:2~3) 으로 칭찬을 듣습니다. 하지만 방금 들은 칭찬이 무색할 만큼 책망을 듣습니다. 그것은 너의 처음 사랑을 버렸느니라(계 2:4)라는 책망입니다. 에베소 교회가 진리를 수호하고 추구하는 일에만 몰두하다가 그만 사랑을 잃어버리게 된 것입니다. 진리 수호와 사랑의 실천은 항상 딜레마와 같은 관계입니다. 진리를 택하자니 사랑이 울고, 사랑을 택하자니 진리가 우는 상황이 됩니다. 하지만 사실은 그렇게 생각할 문제는 아닙니다. 진정한 사랑은 진리 안에서 이루어져야 하고, 진리는 항상 사랑과 함께 해야 합니다. 사랑 없는 진리는 정죄에 지나지 않습니다. 진리 없는 사랑은 자기 만족에 지나지 않습니다. 

The book of Revelation begins with the Lord’s words of praise and rebuke to the seven churches in Asia Minor. The first church, the church in Ephesus, is praised for testing those who claimed to be apostles and exposing their falsehood (Rev. 2:2–3). Yet soon after this praise comes a sharp rebuke: “You have abandoned the love you had at first” (Rev. 2:4). The Ephesian church became so absorbed in defending and pursuing truth that it ended up losing love.

Defending truth and practicing love often seem to be in tension. If we choose truth, love appears to suffer; if we choose love, truth seems compromised. But in reality, this is a false dilemma. True love must be practiced within the truth, and truth must always be accompanied by love. Truth without love becomes mere condemnation. Love without truth becomes mere self-satisfaction.

다 믿지 말고 분별하라 (1~3절)

사도 요한은 사랑에 입각하여 진리의 교훈을 합니다. 영을 다 믿지 말고 하나님께 속한 것인지를 분별하라는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 많은 거짓 선지자들이 이미 세상에 나왔기 때문(1)입니다. 이들은 바로 예수 그리스도를 대적하는 적그리스도의 영에 속한 자들(3)입니다. 미혹하는 영인 사탄은 거짓 선지자들을 통하여 할 수만 있으면 많은 사람들을 미혹하여 하나님과 멀어지게 하려 합니다. 그리고 이러한 자들은 적그리스도의 영에 속한 자들입니다.

그러므로 우리는 순진하게 다 믿지 말고 예민하게 거짓 영을 분별해야 합니다. 분별하기 위해서는 영적인 민감함이 필요한데, 그것은 결국 영성훈련을 통해서 길러집니다. 영성 훈련은 기도와 말씀에 집중하는 것입니다. 이단에 대해서 기초적인 지식은 있어야 하겠지만, 그보다는 진리(예수, 말씀)에 대해서 더욱 많이 아는 것이 필요합니다.

하지만 이들은 분별하는 방법은 의외로 아주 간단합니다. 예수 그리스도의 성육신, 곧 육체로 오신 것을 시인하는 자는 하나님께 속한 자(2b)이고, 그것을 부인하는 자는 하나님께 속한 자가 아닙니다. 곧 적그리스도의 영을 받은 자요, 세상에 속한 자(3)입니다.

요한 공동체는 당시 모든 초대교회와 같이 영지주의Gnosticism에 공격을 받고 있었습니다. 영지주의 자들은 영은 귀한 것이고, 육체는 하찮은 것이라는 이분법적인 사고를 주장했습니다. 그러니 당연히 육신을 입은 신, 하나님의 아들은 필요 없는 것이었습니다. 그래서 그들은 예수님은 눈에 보여진 환상일 뿐이라고 가르쳤습니다. 이러한 주장을 소위 가현설Docetism이라고 합니다. 헬라어로 보이다라는 뜻인 도케오 δοκέω가 어원으로 예수의 몸은 환상일 뿐이라는 주장입니다.

이러한 이단의 역사는 지금까지 계속됩니다. 우리가 믿는 예수님은 참신이시며, 참인간이라는 소위 인성과 신성을 동시에 가지신 분입니다. 그런데 이단들은 이 둘 중에 하나를 부인합니다. 왜냐하면 그래야 우리의 구원이 무산되기 때문입니다. 신성을 부인하면 예수님은 죄인일 뿐입니다. 혹시 죄가 없다고 하더라도 전인류의 죄를 사할 수 없습니다. 반면에 예수님의 인성을 부인한다면 구속 자체가 불가능합니다. 신은 죽을 수 없습니다. 고로 우리의 죄값을 대속하지 못합니다.

그래서 하나님의 지혜는 예수를 참신이요, 참인간으로 이 땅에 보내신 것입니다. 사탄은 정확하게 알고 가장 중요한 교리를 망가뜨리려 합니다. 정신을 바짝 차려야 합니다.

Do Not Believe Every Spirit—Discern Them (vv. 1–3)

The apostle John teaches the truth grounded in love. He urges believers not to believe every spirit, but to test whether the spirits are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (v. 1). These are those who belong to the spirit of the antichrist, who opposes Jesus Christ (v. 3). Satan, the spirit of deception, works through false prophets to lead as many people as possible astray and away from God. Such people belong to the spirit of the antichrist.

Therefore, we must not believe everything naively; we must carefully discern false spirits. Discernment requires spiritual sensitivity, which is cultivated through spiritual discipline—especially prayer and devotion to the Word. While basic knowledge about cults is helpful, it is far more important to know the truth itself—Jesus Christ and God’s Word.

The test, however, is surprisingly simple. Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God (v. 2b). Anyone who does not acknowledge this is not from God, but belongs to the spirit of the antichrist and to the world (v. 3).

Like all early churches, the Johannine community was under attack from Gnosticism. Gnostics claimed a dualistic worldview in which the spirit was good and the body was evil. As a result, they rejected the necessity of God’s Son coming in the flesh, teaching instead that Jesus only appeared to be human. This teaching is known as Docetism, from the Greek word dokeō (δοκέω), meaning “to seem.”

The history of such heresies continues to this day. The Jesus we believe in is both fully God and fully human—possessing both divinity and humanity. Heresies deny one or the other because doing so undermines salvation. If Jesus’ divinity is denied, He is merely a sinner and cannot forgive the sins of all humanity. If His humanity is denied, redemption itself becomes impossible, because God cannot die and therefore cannot pay the penalty for our sins.

God’s wisdom, therefore, was to send Jesus as both true God and true man. Satan understands this clearly and seeks to corrupt the most essential doctrines. We must remain spiritually alert.

우리는 하나님께 속하였으니 (4~6절)

하지만 성도들은 결코 그들을 두려워할 필요도 미혹 당할 필요도 없습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 하나님께 속했기 때문입니다. 경기에서 지지 않고 승리하는 비결이 있습니다. 그것은 이기는 팀에 속하는 것입니다.

우리가 하나님께 속하면 우리는 늘 승리할 수밖에 없습니다. 잠깐 지는 것처럼 보일 때도 있지만 결국에는 승리합니다. 하나님께 속했다면 말입니다. 그러므로 지금 내가 어디에 속했는지 확인해 보십시오! 어떻게 확인할 수 있습니까? 예수께서 육체로 오신 것을 시인하는 자는 하나님께 속한 것입니다(2). 그리고 그러한 자의 승리는 이미 따 놓은 것입니다.

우리가 세상의 영과 그들에게 속한 자들을 두려워할 필요가 없는 두번째 이유는 우리 안에 계신 예수 그리스도가 세상을 이기었기 때문입니다(4). 그들은 세상에 속했기 때문에 세상에 속한 거짓을 말하고 세상이 그들의 말을 듣습니다. 그들은 사도의 복음을 듣지 않습니다. 그들 안에는 미혹의 영이 역사하기 때문(6)입니다.

이단들에게 미혹된 자들을 보면 참으로 얼토 당토 않은 교리에 빠져 있는 것을 발견합니다. 물론 세상 사람들이 보기에는 기독교 교리나 이단의 교리가 그리 다르게 느껴지지는 않을 것입니다. 하지만 가장 중요한 차이는 기독교 교리는 초자연적이지만 동시에 매우 이성적이고, 건강합니다.

하지만 이단들의 교리는 비이성적인 부분과 부도덕적인 문제들이 있습니다. 그리고 가장 중요한 성육신에 대해서 부정합니다. 곧 복음을 부정하는 것입니다. 하지만 성도는 하나님께 속하였기에 진리의 영으로 말미암아 하나님을 아는 자는 사도의 가르침, 곧 복음을 듣습니다. 하나님께 속했는지 구별하는 방법을 정리하자면 다음과 같습니다.

하나님께 속한 자는 사도들의 말(성경말씀)을 듣는다.

예수가 그리스도임을 믿고, 말씀에 순종한다.

영적으로 깨어 있어야 합니다. 언제든지 기도해야 합니다. 또한 미혹 당하지 않도록 진리(예수, 말씀)를 알아야 합니다. 그리고 하나님께 속한 자로서 말씀을 듣고 순종해야 합니다.

그렇게 할 때 우리는 예수 그리스도의 진리의 영 가운데 머무는 것입니다. 하나님 안에 거하는 자는 어떤 것도 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 늘 하나님 안에서 승리와 평안을 누리는 하나님의 영이 충만한 하나님께 속한 자가 되기를 기도합시다.

We Belong to God (vv. 4–6)

Believers have no need to fear or be deceived by them, because we belong to God. There is a simple secret to winning a competition: belong to the winning team.

Those who belong to God ultimately cannot help but be victorious. At times it may look like defeat, but in the end, victory is assured—if we truly belong to God. So examine where you belong. How can you know? Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus came in the flesh belongs to God (v. 2), and their victory is already secured.

The second reason we need not fear the spirit of the world or those who belong to it is that Jesus Christ who is in us has already overcome the world (v. 4). They belong to the world, so they speak from the world’s perspective, and the world listens to them. They do not listen to the apostolic gospel because the spirit of deception is at work in them (v. 6).

Those who are deceived by cults often fall into utterly unreasonable doctrines. To outsiders, Christian doctrine and heretical teachings may not seem very different. The crucial difference, however, is that Christian doctrine is supernatural yet deeply rational and healthy. Heretical teachings, by contrast, contain irrational elements and moral problems, and most importantly, they deny the incarnation—thus denying the gospel itself.

Believers, however, belong to God. By the Spirit of truth, those who know God listen to the apostles’ teaching—that is, the gospel. In summary, those who belong to God can be identified as follows:

• Those who belong to God listen to the apostles’ words (Scripture).

• They believe that Jesus is the Christ and obey His Word.

We must remain spiritually awake and pray at all times. To avoid being deceived, we must know the truth—Jesus Christ and His Word. As those who belong to God, we are to listen to and obey His Word.

When we do so, we remain in the Spirit of truth of Jesus Christ. Those who dwell in God have nothing to fear. Let us pray to become people who belong to God, filled with His Spirit, enjoying victory and peace in Him always.
