1 보라 아버지께서 어떠한 사랑을 우리에게 베푸사 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받게 하셨는가, 우리가 그러하도다 그러므로 세상이 우리를 알지 못함은 그를 알지 못함이라

2 사랑하는 자들아 우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될지는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타나시면 우리가 그와 같을 줄을 아는 것은 그의 참모습 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이니

3 주를 향하여 이 소망을 가진 자마다 그의 깨끗하심과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게 하느니라

1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

4 죄를 짓는 자마다 불법을 행하나니 죄는 불법이라

5 그가 우리 죄를 없애려고 나타나신 것을 너희가 아나니 그에게는 죄가 없느니라

6 그 안에 거하는 자마다 범죄하지 아니하나니 범죄하는 자마다 그를 보지도 못하였고 그를 알지도 못하였느니라

4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

7 자녀들아 아무도 너희를 미혹하지 못하게 하라 의를 행하는 자는 그의 의로우심과 같이 의롭고

8 죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 범죄함이라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이라

9 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 죄를 짓지 아니하나니 이는 하나님의 씨가 그의 속에 거함이요 그도 범죄하지 못하는 것은 하나님께로부터 났음이라

10 이러므로 하나님의 자녀들과 마귀의 자녀들이 드러나나니 무릇 의를 행하지 아니하는 자나 또는 그 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 하나님께 속하지 아니하니라

7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

11 우리는 서로 사랑할지니 이는 너희가 처음부터 들은 소식이라

12 가인 같이 하지 말라 그는 악한 자에게 속하여 그 아우를 죽였으니 어떤 이유로 죽였느냐 자기의 행위는 악하고 그의 아우의 행위는 의로움이라

11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

3:13 형제들아 세상이 너희를 미워하여도 이상히 여기지 말라

3:14 우리는 형제를 사랑함으로 사망에서 옮겨 생명으로 들어간 줄을 알거니와 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 사망에 머물러 있느니라

3:15 그 형제를 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 자니 살인하는 자마다 영생이 그 속에 거하지 아니하는 것을 너희가 아는 바라

13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.

3:16 그가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고 우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라

3:17 누가 이 세상의 재물을 가지고 형제의 궁핍함을 보고도 도와 줄 마음을 닫으면 하나님의 사랑이 어찌 그 속에 거하겠느냐

3:18 자녀들아 우리가 말과 혀로만 사랑하지 말고 행함과 진실함으로 하자

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

3:19 이로써 우리가 진리에 속한 줄을 알고 또 우리 마음을 주 앞에서 굳세게 하리니

3:20 이는 우리 마음이 혹 우리를 책망할 일이 있어도 하나님은 우리 마음보다 크시고 모든 것을 아시기 때문이라

3:21 사랑하는 자들아 만일 우리 마음이 우리를 책망할 것이 없으면 하나님 앞에서 담대함을 얻고

3:22 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 그에게서 받나니 이는 우리가 그의 계명을 지키고 그 앞에서 기뻐하시는 것을 행함이라

3:23 그의 계명은 이것이니 곧 그 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고 그가 우리에게 주신 계명대로 서로 사랑할 것이라

3:24 그의 계명을 지키는 자는 주 안에 거하고 주는 그의 안에 거하시나니 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 그가 우리 안에 거하시는 줄을 우리가 아느니라

19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

수년 전 한국 사회를 떠들석하게 했던 정인이 사건을 기억하십니까?

한 젊은 부부가 첫째 딸 아이와 함께 할 둘째 딸 정인이(당시 8개월)을 입양했고, 입양가족 TV쇼에도 출연하여 가정의 화목함을 자랑했습니다. 젊은 두 부부 모두 포항에 있는 유명한 기독교 대학교를 졸업했고, 남편은 기독교 방송국인CBS 직원입니다. 그런데 이것이 웬일입니까? 입양된 지 8개월 만에 정인이는 싸늘한 주검이 되었습니다. 정인이가 사망한 원인은 췌장절단 및 장기파열입니다. 복부 내에 피가 고이고, 공기가 새어 나와 정인의 뱃속은 점점 썩고 있었던 것이었습니다.

그 외에도 온 몸에 뼈가 하나도 성한 것이 없었습니다. 어떤 골절은 이미 부러졌다가 붙어가고 있었고, 어떤 골절은 얼마 안 된 것도 있었습니다. 너무 가슴이 아픈 것은 그 아이가 아프다는 소리조차 못 했다는 사실입니다. 정인이를 입양했던 양부모 아빠의 이름은 안성은입니다. 엄마는 장하영입니다. 아마도 성은은 성령의 은혜라는 의미일 것이고, 하영은 하나님의 영광이라는 의미일 것입니다. 양가 부모님 모두 목사님, 사모님이니까요. 목사, 기독교 대학, 기독교 직장, 독실한 기독교인, 입양, 성령의 은혜, 하나님의 영광, 그리고 아동 학대, 살해… 전혀 어울리지 않는 조합입니다. 아이가 죽어가는 응급실 대기실에서 인터넷 쇼핑몰로 어묵을 구매하고 있었다는 양부모가 괴물 같습니다. 처음부터 이런 괴물은 아니었을텐데… 언제부터 우리 기독교가 이런 괴물을 만들어 내기 시작했을까요?

Do you remember the Jeong-in case that shook Korean society several years ago? A young couple adopted an eight-month-old baby girl named Jeong-in, who would become their second daughter alongside their first child. They even appeared on a TV show featuring adoptive families, proudly displaying the harmony of their home. Both husband and wife were graduates of a well-known Christian university in Pohang, and the husband worked for CBS, a Christian broadcasting network.

But what on earth happened? Only eight months after the adoption, Jeong-in was found dead. The cause of her death was a severed pancreas and ruptured organs. Blood had pooled in her abdomen, air had leaked inside, and her stomach was slowly rotting from within. In addition, there was not a single bone in her body that was intact. Some fractures had already begun to heal, while others were recent. What breaks our hearts the most is that the child could not even cry out that she was in pain.

The adoptive father’s name was Ahn Seong-eun, and the mother’s name was Jang Ha-young. “Seong-eun” likely means “the grace of the Holy Spirit,” and “Ha-young” means “the glory of God.” Both sets of parents were pastors and pastors’ wives. Pastor, Christian university, Christian workplace, devout Christians, adoption, the grace of the Holy Spirit, the glory of God—and child abuse and murder. These are combinations that do not belong together at all. The fact that the adoptive parents were shopping online for fish cakes while waiting in the emergency room as the child was dying makes them seem monstrous.

They probably were not monsters from the beginning. Since when did Christianity begin producing such monsters?

세상과 구별되는 하나님의 자녀 (1~12절)

요한은 우리가 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받는 것이 얼마나 값진 하나님의 은혜(1)인지를 감탄합니다. 

십자가에서 우리의 모든 죄를 대속하여 죽으신 은혜와 그 피 값으로 우리를 사신 것입니다.

하지만 하나님의 그 은혜를 알지 못하는 세상은 당연히 하나님의 자녀를 이해할 수 없습니다. 간혹 세상 사람들은 금욕, 절제하는 크리스천을 보며 도대체 무슨 재미로 사냐? 라고 묻습니다. 크리스천이 이처럼 구별되는 삶을 사는 이유는 2-3절에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 사랑하는 사람은 서로 닮기를 원하고, 닮아갑니다. 성도 역시 주님을 닮기를 원하는 거룩한 소망이 있습니다.

그리고 주를 향하여 이 소망을 가진 자마다 그의 깨끗하심과 같이 자기를 깨끗하게(3) 합니다.

죄가 없으신 예수님은 아담의 범죄로 세상에 들어온 죄를 없애려고 이 땅에 성육신 하신 것(5)입니다.

그러므로 그 예수 안에 거하는 자마다 범죄하지 않습니다(6). 범죄하지 않는다에 대한 해석은 다양합니다.

Calvin은 요한이 신자의 삶의 원리를 선포한 것으로 보고, 범죄치 아니함을 신자의 이상적인 특징으로 해석합니다. Luther는 그리스도인은 의인인 동시에 죄인이라고 말했습니다.

종합해보면 성도 역시 범죄하지만 회개하고 돌이키며, 늘 작은 죄에도 마음 아파하는 존재라는 것입니다.

이러한 성도의 삶은 세상과 대비됩니다. 하나님께로부터 난 자는 하나님의 씨(복음, 성령, 예수)가 그 속에 있어 죄를 짓거나 범죄하지 못합니다. 이 역시 완전하게 범죄하지 않음을 말하는 것이 아닙니다.

결국 1절에서 말하는 우리에게 베푸신 그 어떠한 사랑으로 말미암아 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것이기에, 그 은혜로 날마다 죄사함을 받고, 돌이키고, 결단하는 그것이 범죄하지 않는 것입니다.

반면에 그 예수를 모르는 세상은 죄를 짓고, 불법을 행하며, 마귀에 속한 것(8a)입니다. 죄를 없애기 위해 오신 예수님(5)은 결국 마귀의 일을 멸하러 오신 것(8b)입니다. 하나님의 자녀와 마귀의 자녀는 극명하게 드러납니다. 의를 행하지 않고, 그 형제를 사랑하지 않는 자는 가인처럼 마귀에 속한 자입니다(10, 11).

Children of God Who Are Distinct from the World (vv. 1–12)

John marvels at how precious the grace of God is—that we should be called children of God (v. 1).By the grace of the cross, where Christ died as the atoning sacrifice for all our sins, we were bought with the price of His blood.

But the world, which does not know this grace of God, naturally cannot understand the children of God. Sometimes people of the world look at Christians who practice self-denial and discipline and ask, “How can you live like that—what fun is there?” The reason Christians live such a distinct life is clearly shown in verses 2–3. Those who love one another want to resemble each other and gradually become alike. Likewise, believers have a holy hope to become like the Lord.

Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (v. 3).Jesus, who is without sin, became incarnate in order to take away the sin that entered the world through Adam’s transgression (v. 5). Therefore, no one who abides in Him keeps on sinning (v. 6). There are various interpretations of what “does not sin” means.

Calvin viewed this as John proclaiming the governing principle of the believer’s life and interpreted “not sinning” as the ideal characteristic of a believer. Luther said that a Christian is at the same time righteous and sinful. Putting these together, believers do sin, but they repent, turn back, and are grieved even by small sins.

Such a life of believers stands in contrast to the world. Those born of God have God’s seed (the gospel, the Holy Spirit, Jesus) abiding in them, and therefore they cannot continue in sin. This does not mean they never sin at all.

Ultimately, because it is by the love bestowed on us that we are called children of God (v. 1), we daily receive forgiveness by that grace, turn back, and make renewed commitments—and this is what it means not to keep on sinning.

On the other hand, the world that does not know Jesus practices sin, commits lawlessness, and belongs to the devil (v. 8a). Jesus, who came to take away sins (v. 5), ultimately came to destroy the works of the devil (v. 8b). The children of God and the children of the devil are clearly revealed. Anyone who does not practice righteousness or love his brother is of the devil, like Cain (vv. 10–11).

행함과 진실함으로 사랑하자 (13~24절)

그러므로 가인이 아벨을 미워하여 죽였던 것처럼, 세상이 성도를 미워하는 것은 이상한 일이 아닙니다. 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 자입니다. 괴물은 하루 아침에 만들어 지는 것이 아닙니다. 마음 속에 미움이 쌓이고 쌓여서 결국에는 살인을 합니다. 그러므로 성도는 매일 절제와 사랑의 훈련을 해야 합니다. 아마도 정인이 양부모들은 보여지는 겉모습에만 집중하는 신앙생활을 했을 것입니다. 내면은 그렇지 못한데, 보여지는 것은 신앙 있게, 예수님 닮은 것처럼 보여야 했기 때문에… 자신도 속고 다른 사람도 속인 셈입니다.

그러므로 형제 사랑은 말과 혀로만 해서는 안됩니다. 이것은 드러나는 행위의 문제가 아닙니다. 중심의 문제입니다. 입양이라는 구체적인 행위가 있었지만, 그것은 사실 말과 혀로 하는 사랑이었을 뿐입니다. 진짜 중심은 남이 알아주든 알아주지 않든 하나님만 바라보고 행하는 행위여야 합니다.

중심과 행동이 일치하는 행위입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리의 행동만 보시는 것이 아니라, 중심과 행동 모두를 아시기 때문(20)입니다. 이렇게 사랑해야 하는 이유는 너무도 자명합니다. 예수께서 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으므로 우리 역시 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅(16)합니다.

그러므로 우리가 가진 것(재물, 건강, 능력 등)을 통하여 형제의 궁핍함을 돌보아야(17) 합니다. 우리가 하나님의 기뻐하시는 것을 행하고 계명을 지키면 하나님 앞에서 담대할 수 있고(21), 무엇이든지 구하는 바를 얻습니다(22a). 그의 계명이 무엇입니까? 그 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고, 그가 우리에게 주신 계명대로 서로 사랑하는 것(23)입니다. 이것이 우리가 주안에 주님이 우리 안에 거하는 유일한 방법입니다.

Let Us Love with Actions and Truth (vv. 13–24)

Therefore, just as Cain hated and killed Abel, it is not strange that the world hates believers. Everyone who hates is a murderer. Monsters are not created overnight. Hatred accumulates in the heart, and eventually it leads to murder. Thus, believers must practice daily discipline and training in love.

Perhaps Jeong-in’s adoptive parents lived a faith focused only on outward appearances. Their inner lives were not right, but what was visible had to look faithful, Christlike. In that sense, they deceived themselves and others.

Therefore, brotherly love must not be merely with word or tongue. This is not a matter of outward actions but a matter of the heart. Although there was a concrete act—adoption—it was, in reality, love expressed only in word and tongue. True love is action done while looking to God alone, whether others recognize it or not.

It is action in which heart and behavior are aligned, because God does not see only our actions but knows both our hearts and our deeds (v. 20). The reason we must love in this way is self-evident: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we also ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters (v. 16).

Therefore, through what we have—our possessions, health, and abilities—we must care for brothers and sisters in need (v. 17). When we do what pleases God and keep His commandments, we can have confidence before Him (v. 21), and we receive whatever we ask (v. 22a). And what is His commandment? That we believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commanded us (v. 23). This is the only way that we abide in the Lord and the Lord abides in us.

안성은, 장하영. 왜 그들은 그 거룩한 이름과는 전혀 반대되는 행위를 했을까요? 그들은 말과 혀로만 사랑해서는 안 된다는 것을 알고 행함까지 나아갔습니다. 그런데 왜…? 

행함은 진실함을 반드시 동반해야 합니다. 진실이 결여된 행함은 결국 가식이고 위선이며, 결과적으로 말과 혀로만 하는 것보다 더 악한 결과는 낳습니다.

하지만 주님은 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 것이라 말씀(15) 하셨습니다. 과연 내가 그들을 정죄할 자격이 될까요? 우리 역시 성도라는 거룩한 이름을 받은 자들입니다. 이름에 걸맞게 살아야 합니다.

부디 그 불쌍한 젊은 부부가 죄값을 받고, 온전히 회복하여 진정한 하나님의 백성이 되기를 바랄 뿐입니다. 혹시 마음 속에 미워하는 사람이 있다면, 회개합시다. 그리고 오늘 하루 아무도 모르게 행함과 진실함으로 우리의 사랑을 실천합시다.

Ahn Seong-eun, Jang Ha-young. Why did they act in ways completely opposite to their holy names? They knew that love must not be only with word and tongue, and they even moved on to action. Then why…?

Action must always be accompanied by truth. Action without truth is ultimately hypocrisy and pretense, and it produces results even more evil than love expressed only in word and tongue. Yet the Lord said that everyone who hates is a murderer (v. 15). Do I truly have the right to condemn them?

We, too, have received the holy name of “saints.” We must live lives worthy of that name. I can only hope that the pitiful young couple will pay the price for their sins, be fully restored, and become true people of God. If there is anyone you hate in your heart, let us repent. And today, let us quietly practice our love—with actions and with truth—where no one else can see.
