2:1 나의 자녀들아 내가 이것을 너희에게 씀은 너희로 죄를 범하지 않게 하려 함이라 만일 누가 죄를 범하여도 아버지 앞에서 우리에게 대언자가 있으니 곧 의로우신 예수 그리스도시라

2:2 그는 우리 죄를 위한 화목 제물이니 우리만 위할 뿐 아니요 온 세상의 죄를 위하심이라

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

2:3 우리가 그의 계명을 지키면 이로써 우리가 그를 아는 줄로 알 것이요

2:4 그를 아노라 하고 그의 계명을 지키지 아니하는 자는 거짓말하는 자요 진리가 그 속에 있지 아니하되

2:5 누구든지 그의 말씀을 지키는 자는 하나님의 사랑이 참으로 그 속에서 온전하게 되었나니 이로써 우리가 그의 안에 있는 줄을 아노라

2:6 그의 안에 산다고 하는 자는 그가 행하시는 대로 자기도 행할지니라

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

2:7 사랑하는 자들아 내가 새 계명을 너희에게 쓰는 것이 아니라 너희가 처음부터 가진 옛 계명이니 이 옛 계명은 너희가 들은 바 말씀이거니와

2:8 다시 내가 너희에게 새 계명을 쓰노니 그에게와 너희에게도 참된 것이라 이는 어둠이 지나가고 참빛이 벌써 비침이니라

7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

2:9 빛 가운데 있다 하면서 그 형제를 미워하는 자는 지금까지 어둠에 있는 자요

2:10 그의 형제를 사랑하는 자는 빛 가운데 거하여 자기 속에 거리낌이 없으나

2:11 그의 형제를 미워하는 자는 어둠에 있고 또 어둠에 행하며 갈 곳을 알지 못하나니 이는 그 어둠이 그의 눈을 멀게 하였음이라

9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

2026년 새해가 밝았습니다. 다들 새해를 맞이해서 새로운 다짐이나 각오를 하신게 있으십니까? 저 같은 경우는 제 안에 도사리고 있는 미움과 악감정들이 예수 보혈의 능력으로 다 씻겨져 나가기를 기도했습니다. 미운 사람을 용서하지 못하고 연약한 자들을 돕지 않는 우리의 이기적인 모습을 바라보면 전혀 예수님을 믿음으로 구원받은 자 같지 않습니다. 이 간극을 어떻게 좁히면 좋을까요? 오늘 본문을 통해 사도 요한이 우리에게 들려주는 말을 귀 담아 들어봅시다. 그리스도인으로서 우리가 전심으로 힘써야 함은 예수 그리스도를 통한 용서와 순종의 삶입니다.

The new year of 2026 has come. As we welcome the new year, have you made any new resolutions or commitments? As for me, I prayed that the hatred and evil feelings lurking within me would be completely washed away by the power of Jesus’ precious blood. When we look at our selfish 모습—unable to forgive those we dislike and unwilling to help the weak—we hardly look like people who have been saved by faith in Jesus. How can we narrow this gap? Through today’s passage, let us listen carefully to what the Apostle John has to say to us. As Christians, what we must wholeheartedly strive for is a life of forgiveness and obedience through Jesus Christ.

1)    대언자 되시는 예수님 (1-2절)

먼저 위로가 되는 것은 바로 우리 죄를 위해 화목제물이 되어주신 예수그리스도 이십니다. 사도 요한께서는 우리가 죄를 짓지 않기를 바라면서도 동시에 또 죄를 지을 수 밖에 없는 인간의 실제적인 한계를 인정합니다. 그렇기에 더욱 예수님의 존재가 우리에게 중요한데, 그는 예수님을 이렇게 표현합니다. “아버지 앞에서 우리에게 대언자가 있으니 곧 의로우신 예수 그리스도시라” (1b). 우리가 죄를 범했을 때 낙담하지 않고 다시 회개함으로 담대히 나아갈 수 있는 유일한 이유는 바로 우리를 대신하여 화목 제물이 되어주신 예수님 덕분입니다. 그리고 2절에서 예수님의 이러한 희생은 “우리만 위할 뿐 아니요 온 세상의 죄를 위하심”으로 다시 한번 세상을 향한 우리의 자세가 어떠한 우월감이나 교만이 아니라 예수님을 본받은 헌신적인 자세여야 함을 생각해 볼 수 있습니다.

1)    Jesus, Our Advocate (Verses 1–2)

First, what brings us comfort is Jesus Christ, who became the atoning sacrifice for our sins. While the Apostle John desires that we do not sin, he also acknowledges the realistic limits of humanity—that we inevitably fall into sin. That is precisely why the presence of Jesus is so important to us. John describes Him this way:

“We have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One” (v. 1b).

The only reason we can come forward again with repentance instead of despair when we sin is because Jesus became the atoning sacrifice on our behalf. And in verse 2, John reminds us that this sacrifice was made “not only for our sins but also for the sins of the whole world.” This leads us to reflect that our posture toward the world should not be one of superiority or pride, but rather a posture of devoted sacrifice that follows the example of Jesus.

2)    계명 준수의 중요성 (3-6절)

이렇게 예수님을 아는 것은 단순한 지식으로 머물러 있을 수 없습니다. 사도 요한은 3절에 계명을 지키는 것이 비로서 우리가 예수님을 안다는 것을 증명한다고 말합니다. 그리고 4절에서는 “하나님을 안다고 말하면서 하나님의 계명을 지키지 않는 사람은 거짓말쟁이며 진리가 그 사람 안에 있지 않습니다” (우리말 번역)라고 말합니다. 이러한 논점은 마치 ‘닭이 먼저냐 달걀이 먼저냐’처럼 구원에 있어서 ‘믿음이 먼저냐 행동이 먼저냐’ 하는 것 같습니다. 사도 바울은 우리에게 정확하게 알려줬지요. “그러므로 사람이 의롭다 하심을 얻는 것은 율법의 행위에 있지 않고 믿음으로 되는 줄 우리가 인정하노라” (롬 3:28). 구원은 오직 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 얻게되는 선물입니다. 그러나 여기서 사도 요한이 말하는 바는 무엇입니까? 참된 신앙은 계명을 지키는 행위라는 실천으로 나타난다는 것입니다. 머리로만 인지하고 말로만 떠드는 것이 아니라 정말 예수님을 사랑한다면 그가 원하는 삶의 방식대로 순종하고 변화하려는게 지당 마땅하다는 것입니다.

2) The Importance of Obeying the Commandments (Verses 3–6)

Knowing Jesus cannot remain mere head knowledge. In verse 3, John says that keeping His commandments is the very proof that we truly know Him. Then in verse 4 he states, “Whoever says, ‘I know God,’ but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in that person” (Korean contemporary translation). This discussion may sound like the classic question of salvation: “Which comes first—faith or action?” The Apostle Paul gives us a clear answer:

“For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law” (Romans 3:28). Salvation is a gift obtained solely through faith in Jesus Christ. Then what is John saying here? He is telling us that true faith is revealed through the practice of obeying God’s commandments. If we truly love Jesus, it is only right that we obey His way of life and strive to be transformed—not merely knowing with our heads or speaking with our mouths, but living it out.

3)    새 계명의 실천 (7-11절)

마지막으로 사도 요한은 이제 구체적으로 어떤 계명을 지켜야 하는지 알려줍니다. 그것은 곧 서로 사랑하라는 계명입니다. 이 계명은 “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라. 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라 “(요 13:34)라고 예수님께서 주신 계명을 떠오르게 합니다.  그리고 8절에 이 새 계명은 “그에게와 너희에게도 참된 것” (8b절)이라고 말하는데, 그 의미는 이 계명이 이미 성령의 역사로 인해 예수 그리스도 안에서 성도들끼리 참되게 이루어지는 일이기 때문입니다.

3) Practicing the New Commandment (Verses 7–11)

Finally, the Apostle John explains specifically which commandment we are to keep. It is the commandment to love one another. This reminds us of the command Jesus gave:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). In verse 8, John says that this new commandment is “true in Him and in you” (v. 8b). This means that, through the work of the Holy Spirit, this commandment is already being genuinely fulfilled among believers in Jesus Christ.

“예수께서 또 말씀하여 이르시되 나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라” (요 8:12). 예수님은 참빛으로 이 세상에 오셨습니다. 그리고 이제는 우리에게 그 빛 가운데 거하며 순종함으로 형제를 사랑하라고 말씀하십니다. 9절과 11절에 반복적으로 형제를 미워하는 자에 대해서 말합니다. “빛 가운데 있다 하면서 그 형제를 미워하는 자는 지금까지 어둠에 있는자요” (9절) 또 “그의 형제를 미워하는 자는 어둠에 있고 또 어둠에 행하며 갈 곳을 알지 못하나니 이는 그 어둠이 그의 눈을 멀게 하였음이라” (11절). 두려운 말입니다. 오늘 새벽 다시 한번 점검해 보길 원합니다. ‘내 마음 속에는 빛으로 오신 예수님이 계시는가?’ 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 용서하기 힘든 사람이 있습니까? 나는 분명 예수님을 사랑하는데 동시적으로 마음대로 조절되지 않는 마음 속 미움이라는 감정에 낙담스러우시진 않습니까? 오늘 새벽 다시 한번 예수님께 고백하며 나아갑시다. 우리의 부족함, 죄의 허물을 주 앞에 다 내려놓고 의로우신 대언자 예수님으로부터 큰 위로와 힘 얻으시길 기도드립니다.

Jesus also said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Jesus came into this world as the true light. Now He calls us to remain in that light and, through obedience, to love our brothers and sisters. In verses 9 and 11, John repeatedly speaks about those who hate their brothers: “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother is still in the darkness” (v. 9), and “Anyone who hates a brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded their eyes” (v. 11). These are frightening words. This morning, I hope we will examine ourselves once again and ask, “Is Jesus, who came as the light, truly in my heart?” Beloved brothers and sisters, is there someone you find difficult to forgive? You clearly love Jesus, yet are you discouraged by the feeling of hatred in your heart that you cannot easily control? This morning, let us once again come before Jesus in honest confession. May we lay down all our shortcomings and the stains of our sin before Him, and receive great comfort and strength from Jesus Christ, our righteous Advocate.
