1:1 태초부터 있는 생명의 말씀에 관하여는 우리가 들은 바요 눈으로 본 바요 자세히 보고 우리의 손으로 만진 바라

1:2 이 생명이 나타내신 바 된지라 이 영원한 생명을 우리가 보았고 증언하여 너희에게 전하노니 이는 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타내신 바 된 이시니라

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.

1:5 우리가 그에게서 듣고 너희에게 전하는 소식은 이것이니 곧 하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어둠이 조금도 없으시다는 것이니라

1:6 만일 우리가 하나님과 사귐이 있다 하고 어둠에 행하면 거짓말을 하고 진리를 행하지 아니함이거니와

1:7 그가 빛 가운데 계신 것 같이 우리도 빛 가운데 행하면 우리가 서로 사귐이 있고 그 아들 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

1:8 만일 우리가 죄가 없다고 말하면 스스로 속이고 또 진리가 우리 속에 있지 아니할 것이요

1:9 만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요

1:10 만일 우리가 범죄하지 아니하였다 하면 하나님을 거짓말하는 이로 만드는 것이니 또한 그의 말씀이 우리 속에 있지 아니하니라

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

예수께서 사랑하시는 그 제자가 베드로에게 이르되 주님이시라 하니 시몬 베드로가

벗고 있다가 주님이라 하는 말을 듣고 겉옷을 두른 후에 바다로 뛰어 내리더라 (요 21:7)

여기서 예수께서 사랑하시는 그 제자는 사랑의 사도라는 별명을 가진 요한 사도 자신을 말합니다. 예전 요한 사도는 예수님과 제자들을 받아들이지 않는 사마리아 마을에 불을 내려 멸하기를 원하시는지 예수께 여쭸다가 꾸중(눅 9:54)을 듣습니다. 주님이 야고보와 요한에게 우레의 아들(막3:17) 이라는 별명을 붙여 주실 정도로 급하고 과격한 성격이었습니다.

하지만 노년이 된 사도 요한은 사랑의 사도가 되었습니다. 이러한 별명에 어울리게 요한일서는 비록 5장에 불과한 짧은 편지이지만, 사랑하는 자들 이라는 표현과 더불어 사랑의 명사형, 동사형 표현이 총 53회가 등장합니다. 

그래서 요한일서는 사랑의 편지 또는 진리의 변증서라고 불립니다. 요한 사도가 정확한 수신자를 밝히지 않아서 알 수는 없지만, 신약학의 권위자인 헨리 디센은 요한계시록에 등장하는 소아시아 7교회가 수신자였을 것으로 추측합니다. 아마도 본 서신은 특정 교회보다는 일반 성도들을 대상으로 모든 교회에 보내져 돌려 읽게 하는 회람 서신일 가능성이 큽니다.

이 서신이 기록된 연대와 장소는 에베소 지역에서 A.D.90-95년 경에 기록한 것으로 추측합니다.

삼위일체라는 용어를 가장 먼저 사용한 2세기 교부 터툴리안Tertullian은 요한이 100세 생일을 지난 다음 날 세상을 떠났다 라고 말했고, 에베소 교회의 감독이었던 폴리크레이즈Polycrates는 주의 품에 의지하던 요한은 에베소에 누워있다 라고 말했습니다.

요한이 본 서신을 기록한 목적은 당시 기승을 부리던 영지주의Gnosticism에 대한 경고와 그로 말미암은 교회 내 분열에 관한 교훈을 주기 위함입니다.

The disciple whom Jesus loved refers to the apostle John himself, who is often called the “apostle of love.” Earlier in his life, John once asked Jesus whether they should call down fire from heaven to destroy a Samaritan village that did not receive Him, and he was rebuked for it (Luke 9:54). John had a quick temper and an aggressive personality—so much so that Jesus gave James and John the nickname “sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17).

However, in his old age, the apostle John became known as the apostle of love. True to that title, although 1 John is a short letter of only five chapters, expressions such as “beloved,” along with nouns and verbs related to love, appear a total of 53 times.

For this reason, 1 John is often called “the Epistle of Love” or “a defense of the truth.” While the exact recipients are not specified, New Testament scholar Henry Dissen suggested that the recipients may have been the seven churches of Asia Minor mentioned in the book of Revelation. It is likely that this letter was a circular epistle intended not for one specific church, but for believers in general, to be read and shared among all the churches.

The letter is believed to have been written in the region of Ephesus around A.D. 90–95.Tertullian, a second-century church father who first used the term “Trinity,” said that John passed away the day after his 100th birthday. Polycrates, the bishop of the church in Ephesus, said, “John, who leaned on the Lord’s breast, rests in Ephesus.”

John wrote this letter to warn against the growing influence of Gnosticism at the time and to address the divisions it was causing within the church.

영원한 사귐 (1-4절)

존 스토트John Stott는 목회자와 평신도라는 책에서 교회의 특성을 에클레시아(부르심), 디아코니아(섬김), 마르투리아(증언), 그리고 코이노니아(교제)로 정의합니다. 오늘 본문에서 사도 요한이 말하고자 하는 바가 존 스토트가 말한 교회의 특성 중 마지막 요소인 교제, 곧 사귐입니다.

요한은 기독론으로 편지를 시작합니다. 예수 그리스도의 선재성과 성육신입니다. 영원 전부터 존재하신 생명의 말씀이신 예수께서 육신이 되어 세상에 오셨고, 사도들은 그 하나님이신 예수를 만지고, 느끼고 보았다(1~2)고 전합니다. 다른 말로 표현하자면 사도들은 예수님과 사귐이 있었다는 것입니다.

사람이 누군가를 사귄다는 것은 매우 즐거운 일입니다. 특히 사귐의 대상이 인격적으로 훌륭하거나, 전인적인 면에서 뛰어난 존재라면 그 기쁨은 배가 될 것입니다. 사도들은 바로 영원 전부터 존재하시며, 육신이 되신 그 영원하신 하나님과 사귐이 있었고, 그 이야기를 너희(교회)들에게 전하는 것입니다.

예수와의 사귐의 이야기를 전하는 목적은 두 가지입니다.

먼저는 우리(사도)와 사귐이 있게 하기 위함(3)입니다. 사도들은 하나님 아버지와 아들 예수 그리스도와 함께하며 그 은혜를 누린 자들입니다. 사도들은 성도들과의 사귐을 통하여 자신들이 누렸던 성부와 성자와의 사귐을 함께 누리기를 원하는 것입니다. 기독교의 본질은 참 하나님이시자 인간이신 구세주 예수를 알고 그와 영원토록 함께 하는 영원한 사귐입니다.

둘째는 사도들 자신이 그 영원한 사귐을 나눔으로 넘쳐나는 기쁨을 맛보기 위함(4)입니다. 내가 누리는 영원한 사귐의 기쁨을 내가 전해준 다른 사람도 누리고 나처럼 기뻐하는 모습을 보는 것은 또 다른 기쁨입니다. 예수와 영원한 사귐의 기쁨을 맛본 자는 그것을 나눠야 합니다.

Eternal Fellowship (vv. 1–4)

John Stott, in Between Two Worlds, defines the characteristics of the church as ekklesia (calling), diakonia (service), martyria (witness), and koinonia (fellowship). In today’s passage, what the apostle John emphasizes is fellowship—the last of these characteristics.

John begins his letter with Christology: the preexistence and incarnation of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the Word of life who existed from eternity, came into the world in the flesh. The apostles testify that they heard Him, saw Him with their eyes, looked upon Him, and touched Him (vv. 1–2). In other words, they had fellowship with Jesus.

To have fellowship with someone is a joyful thing. If the person is noble in character and excellent in every way, that joy is multiplied. The apostles had fellowship with the eternal God who became flesh, and they now proclaim that experience to the church.

There are two purposes for sharing the story of fellowship with Jesus.

First, it is so that you may have fellowship with us (v. 3). The apostles were those who shared in the grace of fellowship with God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Through fellowship with believers, they desired others to share in the same fellowship they themselves enjoyed with the Father and the Son. The essence of Christianity is knowing Jesus Christ—true God and true man—and living in eternal fellowship with Him.

Second, it is so that the apostles themselves may experience complete joy by sharing that eternal fellowship (v. 4). Seeing others enjoy the same joy that one has received brings even greater joy. Those who have tasted the joy of eternal fellowship with Jesus must share it.

사귐의 내용 (5-10절)

사귐을 할 때는 상대방에 대한 기본적인 지식이 필요합니다. 사도 요한은 하나님에 대해 알려줍니다.  

먼저 하나님은 빛(5)이십니다. 하나님이 빛이시고, 어둠이 없다는 것은 하나님의 완전한 거룩함을 말합니다. 이것은 하나님의 구별되는 속성입니다. 하지만 이 속성은 우리 인간에게도 있는 공유적인 속성입니다. 예수님은 너희는 세상의 빛이라(마 5:14)고 말씀 하셨습니다.

유유상종(類類相從)이라는 말이 있습니다. 완전한 빛이신 하나님과의 사귐을 위해서는 우리고 빛 된 삶을 추구해야 하는 것입니다. 만일 하나님과 사귐이 있다고 하면서 영지주의자들과 같은 죄악의 삶을 사는 것은 거짓말하는 것이며 진리 가운데 행하는 것도 아닙니다.

둘째로 하나님과 진정한 사귐을 위해서는 반드시 회개가 필요(9)합니다.

예수 믿고 은혜 받는 첫 걸음이 무엇입니까? 회개입니다. 예수 그리스도를 인격적으로 만난 성도들의 공통적인 고백은 진심 어린 눈물의 회개가 있었다는 것입니다. 스스로 죄를 자백하고, 어릴 때부터 저질렀던 모든 죄악을 눈물로 회개하면 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하십니다.

만일 나는 크게 죄 지은 것이 없어, 글쎄 아무리 생각해도 나는 생각나는 죄가 없는데 라고 말하는 것은 하나님을 거짓말쟁이로 만드는 것(10)이고, 스스로 속이는 행위이며 진리 되신 성령이 자신 안에 없다(8)는 증거입니다.

The Nature of Fellowship (vv. 5–10)

For fellowship to exist, a basic understanding of the other person is necessary. The apostle John teaches us about God.

First, God is light (v. 5). That God is light and that there is no darkness in Him at all speaks of His perfect holiness. This is one of God’s distinguishing attributes. Yet it is also a communicable attribute shared with humanity. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).

There is a saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” To have fellowship with God, who is perfect light, we must pursue a life of light. If someone claims to have fellowship with God while living in sinful ways like the Gnostics, that person is lying and does not walk in the truth.

Second, repentance is essential for true fellowship with God (v. 9).

What is the very first step of receiving grace through faith in Jesus? Repentance. A common testimony among believers who have personally encountered Jesus Christ is heartfelt repentance with sincere tears. When we confess our sins—every sin committed since childhood—with genuine repentance, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

If someone says, “I haven’t committed any serious sins. I can’t think of anything I’ve done wrong,” that person makes God out to be a liar (v. 10), deceives himself, and proves that the Spirit of truth is not in him (v. 8).

인생에서는 만남이 중요하다고 말합니다. 만남을 다른 말로 표현하면 사귐입니다.

나는 지금 누구와 사귀고 있습니까? 어떤 사귐은 내 인생에 도움이 되기 보다는 악한 영향을 미치는 경우가 허다합니다. 잘 분별해야 합니다. 모든 사귐을 잃고서라도 만나야 하는 사귐이 있습니다.

바로 우리의 아버지 되시며 창조주 되시는 하나님과의 사귐이고, 우리의 구원자 되시며 신랑 되신 예수님과의 영원한 사귐입니다.

이 영원한 사귐은 그 분이 빛 되신 하나님임을 알고, 내가 죄인인 것을 아는 것에서 시작합니다.

그리고 내가 죄인인 것을 알았다면, 요한 사도는 이렇게 행할 것을 권면합니다.

만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며

우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요(9)

2026년 새벽기도회 첫 날입니다. 하나님, 예수님과 영원한 사귐을 시작합니다!

그 영원한 사귐은 진정한 입술의 회개의 고백으로 시작됩니다.

진정으로 회개할 때 주님은 죄사함을 약속하십니다. 영원한 사귐의 보장입니다.

그 은혜를 누립시다!

People often say that encounters in life are important. Another word for encounters is fellowship.

Who are you in fellowship with right now? Many relationships do more harm than good in our lives. We must discern carefully. There is a fellowship worth pursuing even if it costs us every other relationship.

That fellowship is with God, our Father and Creator, and with Jesus Christ, our Savior and Bridegroom—an eternal fellowship.

This eternal fellowship begins with knowing that God is light and recognizing that we are sinners. And once we acknowledge that we are sinners, the apostle John exhorts us to do this:

Today is the first day of the 2026 early morning prayer meetings. Let us begin eternal fellowship with God and with Jesus Christ. That eternal fellowship begins with a sincere confession of repentance from our lips. When we truly repent, the Lord promises forgiveness of sins—this is the assurance of eternal fellowship.

Let us enjoy that grace.
