24:1 여호수아가 이스라엘 모든 지파를 세겜에 모으고 이스라엘 장로들과 그들의 수령들과 재판장들과 관리들을 부르매 그들이 하나님 앞에 나와 선지라

1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

24:2 여호수아가 모든 백성에게 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시기를 옛적에 너희의 조상들 곧 아브라함의 아버지, 나홀의 아버지 데라가 강 저쪽에 거주하여 다른 신들을 섬겼으나

24:3 내가 너희의 조상 아브라함을 강 저쪽에서 이끌어 내어 가나안 온 땅에 두루 행하게 하고 그의 씨를 번성하게 하려고 그에게 이삭을 주었으며

24:4 이삭에게는 야곱과 에서를 주었고 에서에게는 세일 산을 소유로 주었으나 야곱과 그의 자손들은 애굽으로 내려갔으므로

2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. 3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, 4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.

24:5 내가 모세와 아론을 보내었고 또 애굽에 재앙을 내렸나니 곧 내가 그들 가운데 행한 것과 같고 그 후에 너희를 인도하여 내었노라

24:6 내가 너희의 조상들을 애굽에서 인도하여 내어 바다에 이르게 한즉 애굽 사람들이 병거와 마병을 거느리고 너희의 조상들을 홍해까지 쫓아오므로

24:7 너희의 조상들이 나 여호와께 부르짖기로 내가 너희와 애굽 사람들 사이에 흑암을 두고 바다를 이끌어 그들을 덮었나니 내가 애굽에서 행한 일을 너희의 눈이 보았으며 또 너희가 많은 날을 광야에서 거주하였느니라

5 “‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out. 6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea. 7 But they cried to the Lord for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

24:8 내가 또 너희를 인도하여 요단 저쪽에 거주하는 아모리 족속의 땅으로 들어가게 하매 그들이 너희와 싸우기로 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨주매 너희가 그 땅을 점령하였고 나는 그들을 너희 앞에서 멸절시켰으며

24:9 또한 모압 왕 십볼의 아들 발락이 일어나 이스라엘과 싸우더니 사람을 보내어 브올의 아들 발람을 불러다가 너희를 저주하게 하려 하였으나

24:10 내가 발람을 위해 듣기를 원하지 아니하였으므로 그가 오히려 너희를 축복하였고 나는 너희를 그의 손에서 건져내었으며

8 “‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. 9 When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you. 10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.

24:11 너희가 요단을 건너 여리고에 이른즉 여리고 주민들 곧 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 기르가스 족속과 히위 족속과 여부스 족속이 너희와 싸우기로 내가 그들을 너희의 손에 넘겨주었으며

24:12 내가 왕벌을 너희 앞에 보내어 그 아모리 족속의 두 왕을 너희 앞에서 쫓아내게 하였나니 너희의 칼이나 너희의 활로써 이같이 한 것이 아니며

24:13 내가 또 너희가 수고하지 아니한 땅과 너희가 건설하지 아니한 성읍들을 너희에게 주었더니 너희가 그 가운데에 거주하며 너희는 또 너희가 심지 아니한 포도원과 감람원의 열매를 먹는다 하셨느니라

11 “‘Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. 12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. 13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’

제자훈련 생활숙제 가운데 유언장을 작성하는 생활숙제가 있습니다. 어떤 분들은 기분 나쁘게 유언장을 쓰라고 하냐는 분들도 있지만, 요즘 세상은 유언장을 미리 작성하고 공증 받는 것까지도 하는 분위기입니다. 사실 유언장을 작성하다보면 삶을 진지하게 돌아보게 되어 오히려 나머지 삶을 더 가치있게 살 수 있는 유익이 있습니다.

또한 재산이 좀 있는 분들은 부모님 사후에 있을 형제들간의 분쟁도 미연에 방지 할 수 있어 좋다고 합니다.

여호수아 24장은 여호수아의 마지막 고별설교, 곧 유언과 같은 말씀입니다. 그는 마지막 설교를 통해서 이스라엘이 하나님 앞에서 어떤 존재인지를 인식 시켜줍니다.

Among the practical assignments in discipleship training, there is one that asks participants to write a will. Some people feel uncomfortable and even offended by being asked to write a will, but in today’s world, many people prepare a will in advance and even have it notarized. In fact, writing a will often leads one to reflect seriously on life, which can become a benefit by helping us live the remainder of our lives with greater value and purpose.Additionally, for those who have some assets, it can help prevent conflicts among siblings after their parents’ passing.

Joshua chapter 24 is Joshua’s final farewell sermon—words that are essentially his last will. Through this final message, he reminds Israel of who they are before God.

이끌어냄을 받은 존재 (1~5절)

이스라엘의 성공적인 가나안 정복은 모두가 하나님으로부터 시작되었습니다. 이 모든 것은 그들의 뜻이 아니었습니다. 여호수아는 강 건넌 사람이라는 의미의 히브리 사람은 아브라함을 불러내신 하나님에 의해 시작되었음을 말합니다(2, 3).

본문에 집중하여 봐야 하는 것은 동사입니다. 내가… 이끌어내어(3a), 인도하여 내었노라(5b), 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨주매(8b), 나는 너희를 그의 손에서 건져 내었으며(10b, 11b), 너희에게 주었더니(13a) 모두 수동적, 피동적인 동사입니다. 이스라엘이 한 것이 아니라, 하나님이 하신 것이라는 의미입니다. 

이것이 바로 교회요, 크리스천의 정체성입니다. 우리는 세상으로부터 이끌어 냄을 당한 존재입니다. 존 칼빈은 이것을 전적인 하나님의 은혜라고 말했습니다. 베드로는 이것을 다음과 같이 아름답게 표현합니다.

그러나 너희는 택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유가 된 백성이니 이는 너희를

어두운 데서 불러 내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을 선포하게 하려 하심이라

(베드로전서  2:9)

본래는 어둠의 자녀요, 사망의 자녀인 우리를 하나님이 건져내어 그의 기이한 빛을 선포하라 하십니다.

그래서 우리 교회의 사명선언도 이러한 정신을 담고 있습니다.

우리는 세상으로부터 그리스도에게로 부름받아 기쁨으로 하나님을 예배하며 사랑으로 서로 교제하는 공동체이다. 말씀과 기도의 훈련으로 성장하며, 각자의 은사를 통한 사역으로 교회를 섬기고 땅끝까지 이르러 예수 그리스도의 증인의 삶을 사는 것이 우리의 사명이다.

가장 첫번째 출발은 세상으로부터 부름 받아, 그곳에서 나오는 것입니다. 아브라함이 우상의 땅 갈대아 우르에서 하나님의 부르심을 받고 나온 것처럼 말입니다. 그러므로 우리 인생은 하나님으로 시작하고, 하나님으로 끝나는 것입니다.

A People Who Were Brought Out (vv. 1–5)

Israel’s successful conquest of Canaan began entirely with God. None of this originated from their own intentions. Joshua explains that the Hebrews—meaning “those who crossed over”—began with Abraham, whom God called out (vv. 2–3).

What we must pay close attention to in this passage are the verbs:“I took…” (v. 3a),“I brought you out” (v. 5b),“I gave them into your hand” (v. 8b),“I delivered you from his hand” (vv. 10b, 11b),“I gave you” (v. 13a).

All of these are passive from Israel’s perspective. This means Israel did not accomplish these things—God did.

This is precisely the identity of the Church and of Christians. We are a people who have been called out of the world. John Calvin referred to this as the total grace of God. Peter beautifully describes it this way:

We were once children of darkness and children of death, but God rescued us and called us to proclaim His marvelous light. This is why our church’s mission statement reflects this very spirit:

The very first step is being called out of the world and coming away from it—just as Abraham was called out from Ur of the Chaldeans, a land of idols. Therefore, our lives begin with God and end with God.

능력보다 큰 축복 (6~13절)

지금 우리 교회를 생각하면, 우리의 능력 밖의 일입니다. 이스라엘도 마찬가지입니다.

본인들의 능력보다 훨씬 큰 복을 받아 누리고 있습니다. 애굽에서 나올 수 있었던 것도 오직 하나님의 은혜가 아니면 불가능한 일이었습니다. 홍해 사건도 그렇습니다. 또한 가나안 땅을 정복할 수 있었던 것도 마찬가지입니다. 발락과 발람의 저주를 축복으로 바꾸신 분도 하나님이십니다.

하나님은 이스라엘의 칼과 활이 아닌, 왕벌을 통해서 이미 아모리 족속을 전투불능 상태로 만들었습니다.

그들의 승리가 그들의 전투력이나 무기에 있었던 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 이스라엘이 심지도 않은 열매를 먹게 하시고, 세우지 않은 성읍을 차지하게 하셨습니다. 이것에 대한 도덕적인 판단은 뒤로하고, 여하튼 하나님은 그들에게 복을 주셨습니다. 그들에 의한 복이 아닌, 하나님에 의한 복, 곧 구원이었습니다.

성경 역사를 보면 오직 하나님의 은혜로 밖에는 설명할 길이 없습니다. 이스라엘은 하나님의 은혜로 세워진 민족입니다. 그런데 이스라엘 뿐입니까? 우리 역시도 마찬가지로 오직 하나님의 은혜로 섭니다. 지난 한 해만 돌아봐도 오직 하나님의 은혜로 여기까지 왔습니다. 그래서 역사history를 그의 이야기 His + Story 라고 부르는 것입니다.

2025년은 물론, 지금까지 우리와 함께 하신 하나님의 은혜는 앞으로도 멈추지 않습니다. 신실하신 하나님이 새해에도 우리를 인도하실 것입니다. 그분은 신실하신 하나님이십니다. 

A Blessing Greater Than Our Ability (vv. 6–13)

When we consider our church today, everything we see is beyond our own ability. The same was true for Israel. They enjoyed blessings far greater than their own capacity.

Their escape from Egypt was impossible apart from God’s grace. The crossing of the Red Sea was the same. The conquest of Canaan was no different. It was God who turned the curse of Balak and Balaam into a blessing.

God rendered the Amorites powerless not by Israel’s sword or bow, but by sending hornets ahead of them. Their victory was not found in military strength or weapons. God allowed them to eat fruit they did not plant and live in cities they did not build. Setting aside moral judgments for the moment, the undeniable truth is that God blessed them. It was not a blessing produced by them, but a blessing from God—namely, salvation.

When we look at biblical history, it can only be explained by God’s grace alone. Israel was a nation established entirely by God’s grace. And is that true only of Israel? No—our lives also stand solely by God’s grace. Even looking back on just the past year, we have come this far only by the grace of God. That is why history is often called His story—His + Story.

The grace of God, who has been with us not only in 2025 but throughout our lives, will not stop going forward. The faithful God will continue to lead us in the new year as well.He is a faithful God.
