11:1 하솔 왕 야빈이 이 소식을 듣고 마돈 왕 요밥과 시므론 왕과 악삽 왕과

11:2 및 북쪽 산지와 긴네롯 남쪽 아라바와 평지와 서쪽 돌의 높은 곳에 있는 왕들과

11:3 동쪽과 서쪽의 가나안 족속과 아모리 족속과 헷 족속과 브리스 족속과 산지의 여부스 족속과 미스바 땅 헤르몬 산 아래 히위 족속에게 사람을 보내매

11:4 그들이 그 모든 군대를 거느리고 나왔으니 백성이 많아 해변의 수많은 모래 같고 말과 병거도 심히 많았으며

11:5 이 왕들이 모두 모여 나아와서 이스라엘과 싸우려고 메롬 물 가에 함께 진쳤더라

Northern Kings Defeated

1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the kings of Shimron and Akshaph, 2 and to the northern kings who were in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Kinnereth, in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor on the west; 3 to the Canaanites in the east and west; to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites in the hill country; and to the Hivites below Hermon in the region of Mizpah. 4 They came out with all their troops and a large number of horses and chariots—a huge army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore. 5 All these kings joined forces and made camp together at the Waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

11:6 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 그들로 말미암아 두려워하지 말라 내일 이맘때에 내가 그들을 이스라엘 앞에 넘겨 주어 몰살시키리니 너는 그들의 말 뒷발의 힘줄을 끊고 그들의 병거를 불사르라 하시니라

6 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, because by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them, slain, over to Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.”

11:7 이에 여호수아가 모든 군사와 함께 메롬 물가로 가서 갑자기 습격할 때에

11:8 여호와께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨기 때문에 그들을 격파하고 큰 시돈과 미스르봇마임까지 추격하고 동쪽으로는 미스바 골짜기까지 추격하여 한 사람도 남기지 아니하고 쳐죽이고

11:9 여호수아가 여호와께서 자기에게 명령하신 대로 행하여 그들의 말 뒷발의 힘줄을 끊고 그들의 병거를 불로 살랐더라

7 So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the Waters of Merom and attacked them, 8 and the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel. They defeated them and pursued them all the way to Greater Sidon, to Misrephoth Maim, and to the Valley of Mizpah on the east, until no survivors were left. 9 Joshua did to them as the Lord had directed: He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.

11:10 하솔은 본래 그 모든 나라의 머리였더니 그 때에 여호수아가 돌아와서 하솔을 취하고 그 왕을 칼날로 쳐죽이고

11:11 그 가운데 모든 사람을 칼날로 쳐서 진멸하여 호흡이 있는 자는 하나도 남기지 아니하였고 또 하솔을 불로 살랐고

10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword. (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed, and he burned Hazor itself.

11:12 여호수아가 그 왕들의 모든 성읍과 그 모든 왕을 붙잡아 칼날로 쳐서 진멸하여 바쳤으니 여호와의 종 모세가 명령한 것과 같이 하였으되

11:13 여호수아가 하솔만 불살랐고 산 위에 세운 성읍들은 이스라엘이 불사르지 아니하였으며

11:14 이 성읍들의 모든 재물과 가축은 이스라엘 자손들이 탈취하고 모든 사람은 칼날로 쳐서 멸하여 호흡이 있는 자는 하나도 남기지 아니하였으니

11:15 여호와께서 그의 종 모세에게 명령하신 것을 모세는 여호수아에게 명령하였고 여호수아는 그대로 행하여 여호와께서 모세에게 명하신 모든 것을 하나도 행하지 아니한 것이 없었더라

12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds—except Hazor, which Joshua burned. 14 The Israelites carried off for themselves all the plunder and livestock of these cities, but all the people they put to the sword until they completely destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed. 15 As the Lord commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.

여러분, 동물 좋아하십니까? 저는 고양이 영상을 종종 보는데, 고양이들은 소위 그루밍이라는 것을 합니다. 혀로 털을 핥는 행위입니다. 고양이는 스스로 자신의 털을 관리하지만, 서로 좋아하는 고양이들끼리, 또는 어미 고양이가 새끼 고양이를 지극 정성으로 그루밍합니다. 원래 그루밍이라는 단어는 마부가 말을 빗질해주는 행위에서 나온 단어라고 합니다. 사람이 동물과 교감하는 것이 사람의 심신 안정에 굉장히 좋다는 사실은 모두가 잘 아실 것입니다. 그런데 오늘 본문을 보면 동물애호협회가 아니더라도 일반적이고 상식적인 사람들도 이해하기 어려운 하나님의 명령입니다. 너는 그들의 말 뒷발의 힘줄을 끊고 그들의 병거를 불사르라 하시니라(6b) 왜, 하나님은 이토록 이상한 명령을 내리시는 것일까요?

Do you like animals? I often watch cat videos, and cats do what we call grooming—licking their fur. Cats take care of their own fur, but cats that like each other, or a mother cat with her kittens, will groom with great care. The word “grooming” originally came from the act of a groom brushing a horse. It’s widely known that human interaction with animals brings emotional stability.

But when we look at today’s passage, we find a command from God that would be hard for even ordinary, sensible people—let alone an animal-protection group—to understand:“You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire” (v.6b).Why would God give such a strange command?

대적이 해변의 수많은 모래 같을지라도 (1~6절)

여호수아와 이스라엘 백성이 가나안 남부 지역의 모든 족속을 물리치자, 북쪽 가나안 족속들이 소식을 듣고는 이스라엘과 대항하기 위하여 연합군을 형성합니다. 이 연합군을 구성한 사람이 하솔 왕 야빈입니다.

하솔은 지명이고, 야빈은 하솔의 왕에게 붙여지는 호칭입니다. 하솔은 가나안 지역을 통틀어 가장 큰 고대도시였습니다. 당시 인구는 3만명이었다고 합니다. 고고학자들의 연구 결과에 따르면 여리고 성은 9800평(8에이커)이었는데, 하솔은 24만5천평(200에이커)이나 되었다고 합니다. 여리고 크기 25배입니다. 

여하튼 북부 지역의 가나안 족속들은 하솔을 중심으로 메롬 물가에 모였습니다.

여호수아서 저자는 그들의 숫자가 해변의 수많은 모래 같다(4) 고 말합니다. 유대인 역사학자 요세푸스는 당시 모인 연합군의 숫자를 보병 30만명, 병거 2만기, 기병대 10만명이었을 것이라고 생각했습니다. 가나안 족속에게 충분히 승산이 있어 보입니다. 사실 하솔 연합군은 규모로 보나 무기로 보나 강적입니다. 무기라고는 전무한 이스라엘 군인들이 이기기에는 버거운 상대입니다.

10장과 11장은 비슷한 구성인데 중요한 차이점이 하나 있습니다. 10장에는 놀라운 하나님의 기적이 있었고, 11장에는 전혀 기적이 없습니다. 심지어 하솔 연합군은 여태까지 싸운 적들과는 상대도 안 되는 강적입니다. 기적이 필요하다면, 지금 바로 이 순간입니다. 그런데 11장에는 전혀 기적이 나타나지 않습니다. 그럼에도 이스라엘은 하솔 연합군을 물리치고 승리합니다.

Even if the enemy is as numerous as the sand on the seashore (vv.1–6)

After Joshua and the Israelites defeated all the peoples in the southern region of Canaan, the northern Canaanite tribes heard the news and formed an alliance against Israel. The one who organized this coalition was Jabin, king of Hazor.

Hazor is a place name, and “Jabin” is a title used for the kings of Hazor. Hazor was the largest ancient city in all of Canaan, with a population of about 30,000. Archaeological research shows that Jericho was about 8 acres, while Hazor was about 200 acres—roughly 25 times larger.

The northern tribes gathered by the waters of Merom, centered around Hazor. The author of Joshua describes them as “as numerous as the sand on the seashore” (v.4). The Jewish historian Josephus estimated the coalition forces to be about 300,000 infantry, 20,000 chariots, and 100,000 cavalry. They seemed more than capable of defeating Israel. In size and weaponry, the Hazor alliance was a formidable foe—far beyond what the weaponless Israelites could handle.

Chapters 10 and 11 have a similar structure, but there is one major difference. Chapter 10 records an astonishing miracle from God. Chapter 11, however, contains no miracle at all. Yet the enemy in chapter 11 is far stronger than any previous opponent. If ever there were a moment for a miracle, it would be now—but in chapter 11, no miracle appears. Even so, Israel defeats the Hazor alliance.

어떻게 여호수아는 하나님의 직접적인 개입 없는 전투에서도 승리할 수 있었을까요? 전략적인 이유를 살펴보자면, 여호수아의 전략은 갑자기(7) 입니다. 전혀 예상하지 못한 곳에서 예상하지 못한 시간에 급습을 하여, 대적들이 전의를 상실하고 도망하여 스스로 무너지게 만드는 방법입니다. 여호수아는 이미 길갈에서 일주일 거리의 전투길을 병사들을 이끌고 출발했습니다. 선수를 친 것입니다.

그리고 전투가 있기 마지막 날 밤 하나님의 확고한 응답을 받았습니다(6a). 전략적으로는 여호수아의 지혜롭고 용맹한 갑자기 전략이 통한 것이지만, 근본적인 승리의 원인은 역시 하나님의 은혜였던 것입니다.

우리의 삶을 가만히 보면 가나안 정복 전쟁과 유사합니다. 점점 더 강한 적들이 등장합니다. 예전처럼 기적이 벌어지면 좋겠는데… 기적은 말 그대로 기적입니다. 매번 기적을 주시지 않습니다. 하지만 하나님은

너의 대적이 모래와 같이 많을지라도 너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너로 승리하게 할 것이다! 말씀하십니다.

우리가 최선을 다하고, 노력을 다해서 좋은 결과가 있으면 우리는 이렇게 생각합니다. 역시 내가 열심히 하니까 잘 되는 구나! 역시 나는 대단하다! 안타깝지만 틀린 생각입니다. 아이성 전투에서 알 수 있듯이 영적전쟁은 나의 힘으로 이기는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 주인 되시고, 우리는 그저 그분의 진두지휘 아래 충실하게 맡겨진 사명만 감당하는 종입니다. 그렇게 되면 어떤 강한 적이 나타나도 두렵지 않습니다.

우리는 어떤 문제를 두려워하고 고민합니까? 왜, 내가 문제를 해결하려고 하지요? 그러니 두려운 것 아니겠습니까? 어차피 우리 삶에 벌어지는 문제들은 아웃 오브 컨트롤입니다. 내 능력 밖입니다. 내가 핸들 할 수 없습니다. 그래서 하나님은 두려워하지 말라고 말씀하시는 것입니다. 왜요? 하나님이 알아서 하실 것이니까요. 그러니까 우리는 하나님 믿고 맡겨 주신 일에 겸손하고 성실하게 충성하기만 하면 됩니다. 그렇게 하면 내일 이맘때면 우리의 대적들은 전멸(6)할 줄 믿습니다!

How could Joshua win a battle without God’s overt, miraculous intervention? Strategically, Joshua used the tactic of “suddenly” (v.7)—a surprise attack at an unexpected place and time that broke the enemy’s will and caused their collapse. He had already marched his soldiers from Gilgal, a week’s journey, taking the initiative. The night before the battle, God gave Joshua a firm promise (v.6a). Strategically it was Joshua’s wise surprise attack, but ultimately the victory was the grace of God.

Our lives resemble the conquest of Canaan. Stronger and stronger enemies appear. We wish miracles would happen as before—but miracles are, by definition, miracles. God does not give them every time. Yet God still says:

“Even if your enemies are as many as the sand on the seashore, do not fear—I will give you victory!”

When we do our best and things turn out well, we tend to think, “Of course things go well because I worked hard! I really am something!”But that thought is wrong. As the battle of Ai showed, spiritual battles are never won by our own strength. God is the commander; we are simply servants faithfully carrying out the assignments He gives. Then no enemy is frightening.

What problems make you fearful? Why do we try to solve them ourselves? That is why we fear. The problems in our lives are out of our control. They are beyond our ability to handle. That is why God says, “Do not fear.” Why? Because He will take care of it. Our responsibility is simply to trust God and be humble, diligent, and faithful in the work He has entrusted to us. And then—by this time tomorrow—the enemies will be destroyed (v.6)!

말 뒷발 힘줄을 끊으라 (6~9절)

하나님께서 놀라운 승리를 주실 때 우리는 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 그것은 적군들 말의 뒷발 힘줄을 끊고, 그들의 병거를 불사르는 것입니다. 어찌 보면 참으로 어리석은 것처럼 보입니다. 적군으로부터 약탈한 전투물자는 매우 요긴합니다. 이스라엘은 그 많은 말도 병거도 없는데, 얼마나 좋은 찬스입니까? 그런데 불쌍한 말들의 힘줄을 끊어서 그저 짐이나 옮기는 용도로만 사용하라니요? 이에 대해서 매튜 헨리는 다음과 같이 말합니다.

이스라엘로 하여금 그들의 병거들을 단지 땔감으로나 쓸 썩은 나무로 보게 하라,

또한 그들의 군마들을 단지 짐마차나 겨우 끌 정도의 보잘것없는 짐승으로 보게 하라

무슨 말입니까? 고대 전쟁에서 승리를 좌우할 수 있는 병거와 말을 아무것도 아닌 것처럼 보도록 그렇게 명령하셨다는 것입니다. 모세는 그는 병마를 많이 두지 말 것이요 (신 17:16a) 명령했습니다. 이 명령은 미래에 세워질 이스라엘 왕은 전쟁에서 유용한 말과 병거를 많이 두고 그것을 의지하지 말라는 것입니다. 그렇다면 이스라엘 왕은 무엇을 의지해야 합니까? 여호와 하나님입니다. 다윗이 성공한 이유가 무엇입니까?

어떤 사람은 병거, 어떤 사람은 말을 의지하나 우리는 여호와 우리 하나님의 이름을 자랑하리로다(시 20:7)

이것이 다윗이 가장 위대한 왕이 될 수 있었던 비밀입니다. 반면에 솔로몬이 망한 이유가 바로 수많은 말과 병거를 두었기 때문입니다. 그는 여호수아가 무너뜨린 하솔 성에 수많은 말과 병거를 두는 부대를 만들었습니다. 그가 망한 가장 큰 이유 중 하나입니다.

Cut the hamstrings of their horses (vv.6–9)

When God grants great victory, He gives us something to do: to hamstring the enemy’s horses and burn their chariots. At first glance it seems foolish. Captured enemy equipment is extremely valuable. Israel had neither horses nor chariots—what an opportunity! But God tells them to cripple the horses so they could only be used for hauling burdens.

Matthew Henry comments:

What does this mean? In ancient warfare, horses and chariots were decisive weapons. But God commanded Israel to treat them as worthless. Moses had said, “The king must not acquire great numbers of horses” (Deut. 17:16). This meant that future Israelite kings must not depend on horses and chariots in battle. Whom then should they rely on? The LORD.

Why was David successful?

This was the secret that made David Israel’s greatest king. In contrast, one of the major reasons Solomon fell was that he amassed countless horses and chariots. He even stationed large numbers of them in Hazor—the very city Joshua had destroyed.

여러분, 내가 내 삶 속에서 끊어버려야 할, 말 뒷발 힘줄은 무엇입니까? 이것만 있으면 전쟁에서 유리할 것이 눈에 선합니다. 하지만 하나님은 그것을 의지하지 말고, 하나님을 의지하라고 말씀하십니다. 당신이 태워버려야 할 병거는 무엇입니까? 이것만 있으면 전쟁에서 빠르게 전진해서 승리할 것 같은 나만의 전차가 무엇입니까? 하나님은 세상 병거에 올라타지 말고 말씀의 전차에 올라타서 전진하라고 말씀하십니다. 여러분, 무엇을 두려워하십니까? 내가 두려워하는 그것이 곧 나의 하나님입니다. 돈이라는 말의 힘줄을 끊어버립시다. 명예라는 병거를 태워 버립시다. 출세라는 말의 힘줄을 끊어버립시다. 세상 즐거움이라는 병거를 태워 버립시다. 오직 하나님만 의지하는 강한 용사 되시기를 바랍니다.

Beloved, what are the “hamstrings of horses” you need to cut in your own life? What do you see as the decisive advantage that would help you win your battles? God says not to rely on that, but on Him. What is the “chariot” you must burn? What is your personal “war chariot” that makes you think you can advance quickly and win? God says, do not ride the world’s chariots—ride the chariot of His Word.

What are you afraid of? Whatever you fear—that is your true god.Let us cut the hamstrings of the horse called money.Let us burn the chariot called honor.Let us cut the hamstrings of the horse called success.Let us burn the chariot called worldly pleasure.

May you become a mighty warrior who relies on God alone. Amen.
