8:10 여호수아가 아침에 일찍이 일어나 백성을 점호하고 이스라엘 장로들과 더불어 백성에 앞서 아이로 올라가매

8:11 그와 함께 한 군사가 다 올라가서 그 성읍 앞에 가까이 이르러 아이 북쪽에 진치니 그와 아이 사이에는 한 골짜기가 있더라

8:12 그가 약 오천 명을 택하여 성읍 서쪽 벧엘과 아이 사이에 매복시키니

8:13 이와 같이 성읍 북쪽에는 온 군대가 있고 성읍 서쪽에는 복병이 있었더라 여호수아가 그 밤에 골짜기 가운데로 들어가니

10 Early the next morning Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.

8:14 아이 왕이 이를 보고 그 성읍 백성과 함께 일찍이 일어나 급히 나가 아라바 앞에 이르러 정한 때에 이스라엘과 싸우려 하나 성읍 뒤에 복병이 있는 줄은 알지 못하였더라

8:15 여호수아와 온 이스라엘이 그들 앞에서 거짓으로 패한 척하여 광야 길로 도망하매

8:16 그 성읍에 있는 모든 백성이 그들을 추격하려고 모여 여호수아를 추격하며 유인함을 받아 아이 성읍을 멀리 떠나니

8:17 아이와 벧엘에 이스라엘을 따라 가지 아니한 자가 하나도 없으며 성문을 열어 놓고 이스라엘을 추격하였더라

14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness. 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.

8:18 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 네 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 아이를 가리키라 내가 이 성읍을 네 손에 넘겨주리라 여호수아가 그의 손에 잡은 단창을 들어 그 성읍을 가리키니

8:19 그의 손을 드는 순간에 복병이 그들의 자리에서 급히 일어나 성읍으로 달려 들어가서 점령하고 온 성읍에 불을 놓았더라

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand. 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.

8:20 아이 사람이 뒤를 돌아본즉 그 성읍에 연기가 하늘에 닿은 것이 보이니 이 길로도 저 길로도 도망할 수 없이 되었고 광야로 도망하던 이스라엘 백성은 그 추격하던 자에게로 돌아섰더라

8:21 여호수아와 온 이스라엘이 그 복병이 성읍을 점령함과 성읍에 연기가 오름을 보고 다시 돌이켜 아이 사람들을 쳐죽이고

8:22 복병도 성읍에서 나와 그들을 치매 그들이 이스라엘 중간에 든지라 어떤 사람들은 이쪽에서 어떤 사람들은 저쪽에서 쳐죽여서 한 사람도 남거나 도망하지 못하게 하였고

8:23 아이 왕을 사로잡아 여호수아 앞으로 끌어 왔더라

20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky, but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives. 23 But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

8:24 이스라엘이 자기들을 광야로 추격하던 모든 아이 주민을 들에서 죽이되 그들을 다 칼날에 엎드러지게 하여 진멸하기를 마치고 온 이스라엘이 아이로 돌아 와서 칼날로 죽이매

8:25 그 날에 엎드러진 아이 사람들은 남녀가 모두 만 이천 명이라

8:26 아이 주민들을 진멸하여 바치기까지 여호수아가 단창을 잡아든 손을 거두지 아니하였고

8:27 오직 그 성읍의 가축과 노략한 것은 여호와께서 여호수아에게 명령하신 대로 이스라엘이 탈취하였더라

24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed all who lived in Ai. 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.

8:28 이에 여호수아가 아이를 불사라 그것으로 영원한 무더기를 만들었더니 오늘까지 황폐하였으며

8:29 그가 또 아이 왕을 저녁 때까지 나무에 달았다가 해 질 때에 명령하여 그의 시체를 나무에서 내려 그 성문 어귀에 던지고 그 위에 돌로 큰 무더기를 쌓았더니 그것이 오늘까지 있더라

28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a permanent heap of ruins, a desolate place to this day. 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset, Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks over it, which remains to this day.

여호수아는 아침에 일찍이 일어나 전투를 준비합니다. 아이 왕 역시 여호수아의 전투 준비를 보고 전투 태세를 갖춥니다. 전투가 시작되자 이스라엘 본 부대는 거짓으로 패하여 광야 길로 도망합니다(15). 아이왕은 총전력을 다하여 그들을 뒤쫓는데, 성문을 활짝 열어놓고 따라갑니다. 이를 본 여호수아는 창을 들어 신호를 합니다. 그러자 숨어있던 이스라엘 복병이 아이성으로 침투하여 성을 점령하고, 불을 지릅니다.

아이성 사람들이 뒤를 돌아 자신들의 성에서 연기가 피어 오르는 것을 목격하고, ‘아차’ 싶을 때 이스라엘 본 부대는 다시 돌아서 아이 사람들을 공격하여, 모든 군인이 죽고 아이 왕은 사로잡힙니다. 1차 아이성 전투는 이스라엘의 참패였습니다. 그리고 그 이유는 이스라엘의 교만과 아간의 범죄 때문이었습니다. 2차 아이성 전투는 아이의 참패였습니다. 그 이유가 무엇일까요?

Joshua rose early in the morning and prepared for battle. The king of Ai also saw Joshua’s preparation and readied his troops. As the battle began, the main Israelite force pretended to be defeated and fled toward the wilderness (v.15). The king of Ai mobilized all his forces to pursue them, leaving the city gates wide open. Seeing this, Joshua raised his spear as a signal. Then the Israelite ambush force infiltrated Ai, seized the city, and set it on fire.

When the people of Ai turned back and saw smoke rising from their city, it was already too late. At that moment, the main Israelite army turned around and attacked the men of Ai. Every soldier of Ai was killed, and the king of Ai was captured. The first battle at Ai was Israel’s complete defeat. The reason for this defeat was the pride of Israel and the sin of Achan. The second battle, however, ended in Ai’s total destruction. Why?

교만은 넘어짐의 앞잡이 (10~20절)

오늘의 본문을 영화나 소설로 만든다면 여호수아의 시각과 아이 왕의 시각으로 묘사할 수 있습니다. 아이 왕에 대한 자세한 모습은 성경에 나와있지 않지만 성경적인 근거를 통한 조금의 상상력 발휘한다면 얼마든지 재미있는 이야기가 탄생할 수 있습니다. 이스라엘의 여호와는 전쟁의 신으로 모든 가나안 지역 사람들이 듣고 떨고 있던 상황입니다. 그런데 아이 왕은 손쉽게 1차 전쟁을 승리합니다. 그들의 사기가 충천합니다. 하지만 냉정하고 객관적인 사실에 입각한 판단에서 비롯되지 않는 결론은 위험합니다. 그리고 냉정하고 객관적인 사실에 입각하여 판단하지 않는 그것을 교만이라고 합니다. 지혜자는 우리에게 교만은 패망의 선봉이요 거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이니라(잠 16:18) 경고합니다.

아이 왕은 1차전 승리에 도취하여 냉정하고 객관적인 판단을 하지 못했습니다. 그의 교만을 알 수 있는 근거가 있습니다.

첫번째로 아이 왕은 일찍이 일어나 급히(14) 전쟁에 임합니다. 그런데 여기서 사용한 급히는 히브리어 마하르로 서두르다는 의미입니다. 여호수아가 아침에 일찍이 일어난 것과는 전혀 다른 차원입니다.

두번째로 그들은 성문을 열어놓고(17) 이스라엘을 추격합니다. 고대 전투에서 성문의 중요함은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않습니다. 1차전 승리감에 도취한 나머지 그들은 가장 기초적인 방어와 안전 수칙을 무시한 것입니다. 성문을 열어 놓고, 만약에 사태에 대비해야 할 최소한의 군사도 남기지 않은 것입니다. 이것은 초심을 잃은 것이고, 교만한 것입니다. 사람이 초심을 잃으면 교만해지고, 교만해지면 망합니다. 그래서 초심을 잃지 않도록 노력해야 합니다.

Pride Comes Before a Fall (vv. 10–20)

If today’s passage were made into a movie or novel, we could portray it from Joshua’s point of view and from the king of Ai’s point of view. The Bible does not provide a detailed description of the king of Ai, but with biblical imagination, a compelling story can be created.

The LORD of Israel was known as the God of war, and all the people of Canaan trembled at His reputation. Yet the king of Ai easily won the first battle. Their morale soared. But a conclusion that is not based on calm, objective truth is dangerous. And the refusal to judge based on calm and objective truth is what we call pride. The wise warn us:

The king of Ai, drunk with his first victory, failed to make sober, objective judgments. We see evidence of his pride:

First, the king of Ai “hurried” and went out to battle early (v.14).The Hebrew word used for “hurried” is mahar, meaning to rush. This is completely different in meaning from Joshua’s getting up early in the morning.

Second, they pursued Israel while leaving the city gates wide open (v.17).In ancient warfare, the significance of the city gate cannot be overstated. Driven by the intoxication of their first victory, they disregarded the most basic rules of defense and safety. They left their gates open and did not even keep a minimal number of soldiers behind in case something went wrong. They lost their first resolve, and they became arrogant. When people lose their first resolve, they become prideful—and when they become prideful, they fall. Therefore, we must strive not to lose our first resolve.

아이와는 반대로, 교만했던 이스라엘은 겸손 모드를 전환하였습니다. 겸손의 가장 큰 특징이 무엇인 줄 아십니까? 말씀을 듣는 것, 그리고 순종하는 것입니다. 겸손한 사람은 다른 사람의 말에 귀를 기울입니다.

반면에 교만한 사람은 남의 말을 전혀 듣지 않습니다. 타인의 말을 경청하지만, 그 가운데 하나님의 음성을 찾아내는 지혜를 가진 자가 겸손한 자입니다.

교만은 패망의 선봉이고 거만한 마음은 넘어짐의 앞잡이 라는 진리가 모든 사람에게 해당한다면, 하나님을 믿는 백성과 불신자들의 가장 큰 차이점은, 대저 의인은 일곱 번 넘어질지라도 다시 일어나려니와 악인은 재앙으로 말미암아 엎드러지느니라(잠 24:16)입니다. 우리에게는 다시 일으키시는 하나님이 계신 줄로 믿습니다. 그래서 매튜 헨리는 거짓으로 패하는 여호수아의 모습을 다음과 같이 해석합니다.

일시적 패배를 통하여 마침내 승리를 쟁취한 여호수아의 이 전략은 십자가의 죽음을 통하여 패배하는 듯 보였으나, 부활로 인하여 마침내 영원한 승리를 거두신 예수 그리스도의 위업을 상징하고 예표한다

In contrast, Israel—who had been prideful before—shifted into humility. Do you know the greatest mark of humility? Listening to the Word and obeying it. A humble person listens to others. A proud person listens to no one. One who listens to people and, within that, discerns the voice of God—such a person is truly humble.

If the truth that “pride goes before destruction” applies to everyone, then the greatest difference between believers and unbelievers is this:

We believe that we have a God who raises us up again.

Matthew Henry interprets Joshua’s temporary defeat in this way:

그렇습니다. 일시적인 실패는 결코 패배가 아닙니다. 실패를 밥 먹듯 했던 한 남자를 소개합니다.

나는 실패할 때마다 실패에 담겨진 하나님의 뜻을 배웠고 그것을 징검다리로 활용했습니다. 사단은 내게 실패할 때마다 '이제 너는 끝장이다'라고 속삭였습니다. 그러나 하나님은 내가 실패할 때마다 '이번 실패를 거울삼아 더 큰 일에 도전하라'고 하셨습니다. 나는 사단의 속삭임보다 하나님의 음성에 귀를 기울였습니다.

그렇습니다! 때로는 그리스도인도 실패할 때가 있습니다. 하지만 하나님의 음성을 듣고 겸손히 순종하는 사람은 결국에는 승리케 하실 줄 믿습니다.

Indeed. Temporary failure is not defeat. Let me introduce a man who failed repeatedly:

Age 10 — lost his mother,

Age 23 — business failed,

Age 24 — lost election for state legislature

Age 24 — rebuilt business with borrowed money, failed again

Age 26 — fiancée died

Age 28 — nervous breakdown, hospitalized

Age 30 — lost election for state speaker

Age 32 — lost election for elector

Age 35 — lost congressional race

Age 38 — lost another congressional race

Age 39 — rejected for land officer position

Age 44 — lost Senate race

Age 46 — lost bid for vice presidency

Age 48 — lost another Senate race

Age 50 — elected as the 16th President of the United States: Abraham Lincoln.

He said:

Indeed! Christians will fail at times. But those who listen to God’s voice and humbly obey will ultimately be led to victory.

죄를 진멸하시는 공의의 하나님 (21~23절)

남녀노소 짐승을 가리지 않고 진멸하시는 하나님의 모습은 불신자들로 하여금 하나님을 믿기 힘들게 하는 부분입니다. 하지만 모든 인생은 죄인이며 공의의 하나님은 심판하는 하나님이라는 전제를 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 또한 죄에 대한 단호한 마음을 가져야 합니다.

구약의 이러한 전쟁은 신약에 와서 개인의 내면으로 들어옵니다. 구약의 이러한 잔혹한 전쟁은 내면의 자기와의 싸움, 죄와의 싸움으로 연결되는 것입니다. 결국 처절함, 희생을 감수하면서 해야 하는 것이 죄악과의 전투 라는 것입니다. 내 안에 있는 여리고, 아간, 아이 왕을 몰아내야 하는 것입니다. 남녀노소 모두를 멸하는 처절함과 진지함, 애절함으로 죄를 몰아내는 결단이 필요합니다.

여호와를 경외하는 것은 악을 미워하는 것이라

나는 교만과 거만과 악한 행실과 패역한 입을 미워하느니라(잠 8:13)

공의의 하나님 앞에서는 아이성의 모든 사람, 어린 아이와 부녀자 뿐 아니라 모든 인류가 죽어야 합니다. 하나님은 자기자신이자 아들인 예수도 죽이셨습니다. 이것이 죄의 참혹함, 말씀을 어긴 교만의 결과입니다.

십자가는 사탄에게 작전상 패한 하나님의 지혜입니다. 마치 실패한 것 같았지만, 그 실패는 가장 위대한 실패가 되어 예수를 믿는 모든 자에게 승리를 주십니다. 그러므로 예수 믿는 우리는 실패를 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 우리가 두려워해야 할 것은 실패를 경험하지 못해서 교만해지는 것입니다. 

만일 실패한 중에 계십니까? 하나님을 찬양합시다. 성공가도를 달리고 계십니까? 겸손 합시다.

우리의 삶을 통하여 오직 하나님만 영광 받으시길 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 그분은 내가 받아야 할 저주받은 십자가의 실패도 마다하지 않으셨기 때문입니다. 그 예수를 찬양합시다.

The God of Justice Who Destroys Sin (vv. 21–23)

The image of God destroying all—men, women, children, and livestock—causes unbelievers to struggle with believing in Him. But we must not forget: all humanity is sinful, and the God of righteousness is a God who judges. We must develop a firm attitude toward sin.

The wars of the Old Testament move inward in the New Testament. The brutality of those battles becomes a battle within ourselves—a war against sin. The fight against sin demands pain, sacrifice, and persistence, because sin does not die easily. We must drive out the Jericho, the Achan, and the king of Ai that lie within us. We must fight against sin with seriousness, desperation, and resolve—just as the Israelites completely destroyed all in Ai.

Before the God of justice, everyone in Ai must die—children, women, everyone. In fact, God did not spare even His own Son, who is Himself. That is the horror of sin; that is the result of pride that rejects His Word.

The cross was God’s strategic defeat in the eyes of Satan. It looked like failure, but it became the greatest “failure” of all—one that grants victory to all who believe in Jesus. Therefore, those who believe in Christ have no reason to fear failure. What we should fear is becoming arrogant because we have never experienced failure.

May our lives glorify God alone.For He did not refuse even the cursed failure of the cross that we deserved.Let us praise Jesus.
