2:16 라합이 그들에게 이르되 두렵건대 뒤쫓는 사람들이 너희와 마주칠까 하노니 너희는 산으로 가서 거기서 사흘 동안 숨어 있다가 뒤쫓는 자들이 돌아간 후에 너희의 길을 갈지니라

15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.”

2:19 누구든지 네 집 문을 나가서 거리로 가면 그의 피가 그의 머리로 돌아갈 것이요 우리는 허물이 없으리라 그러나 누구든지 너와 함께 집에 있는 자에게 손을 대면 그의 피는 우리의 머리로 돌아오려니와

2:20 네가 우리의 이 일을 누설하면 네가 우리에게 서약하게 한 맹세에 대하여 우리에게 허물이 없으리라 하니

17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”

2:21 라합이 이르되 너희의 말대로 할 것이라 하고 그들을 보내어 가게하고 붉은 줄을 창문에 매니라

2:22 그들이 가서 산에 이르러 뒤쫓는 자들이 돌아가기까지 사흘을 거기 머물매 뒤쫓는 자들이 그들을 길에서 두루 찾다가 찾지 못하니라

2:23 그 두 사람이 돌이켜 산에서 내려와 강을 건너 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 나아가서 그들이 겪은 모든 일을 고하고

2:24 또 여호수아에게 이르되 진실로 여호와께서 그 본 땅을 우리 손에 주셨으므로 그 땅의 모든 주민이 우리 앞에서 간담이 녹더이다 하더라

21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”

So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

            우리 말에 ‘물에 빠진 사람은 지푸라기라도 잡는다’ 라는 속담이 있습니다. 죽을 위험에 처하면 하찮은 것이라도 살기 위해 붙잡게 된다는 뜻으로, 절박한 상황에서는 수단과 방법을 가리지 않게 됨을 비유합니다. 지금 여리고 성에 갇힌 정탐꾼들이 바로 그 상황입니다. 그들은 자신들의 정체가 탄로나서 목숨이 경각에 처한 상황이 되었습니다. 지금 이들은 찬밥 더운밥을 가릴 처지가 아닙니다. 자신들의 목숨 줄을 쥐고 있는 라합에게 무조건 적으로 따라야만 하는 상황이지요. 라합이 “나와 우리 가족들을 죽음에서 건져내라” 라고 요구한다면 “어, 그래, 그렇게 하자, 일단 우리부터 살려줘” 라고 해야 하는데 오늘 말씀을 보면 조금 이상합니다. 이들은 무슨 배짱인지 자신들의 목숨 줄을 쥐고 있는 라합에게 조건을 걸고 있어요. 자, 여기에 오늘 말씀의 아이러니가 있습니다. 오늘은 “절박한 약속: 구원을 향한 결단과 하나님의 확증”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

In English, we have a saying: "A drowning man will clutch at a straw." It means that when facing a life-threatening situation, one will desperately grasp even the smallest, most insignificant thing for survival. In moments of panic, we often abandon all caution and conventional means.

That is precisely the situation the Israelite spies are facing, trapped in Jericho. Their cover has been blown, and their lives hang by a thread. They are in no position to be choosy or negotiate. They should be unconditionally obeying Rahab, the one who holds their lifeline. If Rahab were to demand, "Swear that you will save me and my family from death," they should immediately say, "Yes, absolutely! Just get us out of here!"

But when we look at today’s Scripture, something very strange happens. With what audacity do these men, whose lives are in Rahab's hands, begin to lay down conditions to her?

This is the great irony of our passage today.

Today, I want to preach on the theme: A Desperate Promise: Human Resolve and Divine Confirmation in Salvation.

            자, 첫번째로 말씀드리고 싶은 건 구원에 대한 절박함으로  주객전도가 일어났다는 것입니다. 이게 무슨 말이냐? 앞에서도 말씀드렸듯이 지금 목숨이 경각에 처한 사람은 정탐꾼들입니다. 16절의 말씀을 함께 읽겠습니다. “라합이 그들에게 이르되 두렵건대 뒤쫓는 사람들이 너희와 마주칠까 하노니 너희는 산으로 가서 거기서 사흘 동안 숨어 있다가 뒤쫓는 자들이 돌아간 후에 너희의 길을 갈지니라” 이 말씀은 이들이 지금 처한 상황이 얼마나 다급한 상황이고 절박한 상황인지를 단적으로 보여주는 말씀이지요. 발각되면 즉시 죽을 수 있는 상황인 것입니다. 그런데 가만히 보면 15절, 16절에서 이 상황을 적극적으로 해결하는 사람은 라합입니다. 자, 15절에서는 라합이 정탐꾼들을 위해 이들을 창문에서 줄로 달아 내리는 행동을 보여주고 있습니다. 16절에서는 이들에게 정확한 피신 지침, 즉, 이들이 살아 나갈 수 있는 방법을 라합이 알려주고 있지요. 이 순간 가장 절박해야 할 사람은 정탐꾼들인데 라합이야말로 가장 절박한 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이에요. 참으로 기가 막힌 상황이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이들이 라합에게 하는 말을 보면 더 기가 막힙니다. 17절 말씀을 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “그 사람들이 그에게 이르되 네가 우리에게 서약하게 한 이 맹세에 대하여 우리가 허물이 없게 하리니” 이 절박함의 주객전도가 분명히 보여지는 것이 바로 이 17절 이하의 맹세의 조건들이지요. 이들은 라합과 맺은 맹세를 가르켜 “네가 우리에게 서약하게 한 이 맹세”라고 말하고 있습니다. 이들이 라합에게 자신들의 목숨을 구걸하며 “숨겨만 주면 우리가 나중에 너는 살려주겠다” 라고 맹세를 한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 오히려 라합이 먼저 “오! 너희들 여호와의 사람들이구나, 나와 여호와의 이름으로 맹세하라” 라고 그들로 약속을 하도록 강제했다는 것입니다. 정탐꾼들이 하는 말을 좀 보십시오. “이 맹세에 대하여 우리가 허물이 없게 하리니.” 지금 당장 자신들의 목숨이 위태로운데 이들은 라합에게 조건을 걸고 있어요. 그것도 하나도 아닌 세개의 조건을 겁니다. 첫번째는 18절, 창문에 붉은 줄을 매라. 두번째는 18-19절, 모두 네 집에 모아서 아무도 집 밖을 나가게 하지 마라. 세번째는 20절, 이 일을 누설하지 마라. 그리고는 반복해서 말하지요. “네가 우리에게 서약하게 한 맹세에 대하여 우리에게 허물이 없으리라 하니.” 라합은 목숨을 걸고 이들을 숨겨주었습니다. 그 댓가가 조건부 구원이라면 라합은 충분히 이 불합리한 조건들을 거절 할 수 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 21절에 라합은 정탐꾼들이 내건 모든 조건을 그 즉시 수용하고 있습니다. 이는 라합이 자신의 목숨을 건 행위에 대한 보상보다 구원의 언약 그 자체에 얼마나 절박하게 매달렸는지를 보여주는 것이지요. 조건의 난이도나 불합리함이 중요하지 않은 것입니다. 그녀가 바라보고 있었던 단 하나의 목표는 바로 구원이었던 것입니다. 오늘 말씀에 물에 빠진 사람은 정탐꾼들이 아닌 바로 라합이었던 것입니다.

[Point 1: Desperation for Salvation Reverses the Roles]

First, I want to address how a desperation for salvation leads to a reversal of roles.

As I mentioned, the men whose lives are hanging by a thread are the spies. Let's read verse 16:

"She said to them, 'Go up into the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and then go on your way.'"

This verse clearly shows how desperate and urgent their situation is. If they are caught, they will be instantly killed.

Yet, if we observe verses 15 and 16, the person who is actively solving the crisis is Rahab. In verse 15, Rahab takes the decisive action of letting the spies down by a rope through the window. In verse 16, she gives them precise instructions for escape—the only way they can survive.

At this moment, the spies should be the most desperate, but Rahab is the one demonstrating the most urgent resolve. It is a truly astonishing situation.

And what the spies say to Rahab is even more remarkable. Let's read verse 17:

"The men said to her, 'This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless...'"

The stark reversal of desperation is clearly shown by the conditions of the oath in verse 17 and following. The spies refer to the promise as "This oath you made us swear." This means the spies did not beg Rahab for safety, promising to spare her later. Instead, Rahab was the one who compelled them, saying, "You are the Lord's people! Swear to me by the name of the Lord!"

Now, look at what the spies say: "This oath... will not be binding on us." Their lives are in immediate danger, yet they are dictating terms to Rahab. They demand not one, but three conditions:

1. Condition One (v. 18): You must tie this scarlet cord in the window.

2. Condition Two (vv. 18-19): You must gather all your family inside the house and ensure no one steps outside.

3. Condition Three (v. 20): You must not betray our mission.

And they repeat the refrain: "Then we will be released from this oath you made us swear."

Rahab risked her life to hide them. If the reward was conditional survival, she would have been justified in rejecting these seemingly unreasonable terms.

But in verse 21, Rahab immediately accepts every single condition the spies set: "I will do as you say," she replied. This shows how desperately Rahab was clinging to the covenant of salvation itself, far more than any compensation for her actions. The difficulty or unreasonableness of the terms did not matter. Her sole focus was salvation.

In today's story, the "drowning man" was not the spy—it was Rahab.

                  두번째로 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 약속을 향한 순종이 구원 확증을 완성하였다는 것입니다. 라합의 절박함은 즉각적인 순종으로 이어졌습니다. 21절, 그녀는 조건대로 붉은 줄을 창문에 매지요. 한가지 재미있는 것은 이 ‘줄’ 을 뜻하는 단어가 원문에는 서로 다른 ‘줄’이라는 단어 두개가 사용되었다는 것입니다. 그래서 어떤 번역에서는 ‘실로 꼰 줄’이라고 번역을 하기도 하지요. 그런데 그 단어 중에 하나가 ‘줄’ 이라는 뜻도 있지만 ‘소망’이나 ‘희망’을 뜻하는 단어와 동음이의어기도 합니다. 이는 의도적으로 이 붉은 줄이 하나의 증표로서 ‘줄’인 동시에 하나님의 구원을 기다리는 라합의 간절한 소망을 보여주고 있는 것이기도 한 것입니다. 자, 라합만 순종한 것은 아닙니다. 22절을 보니 정탐꾼들도 라합이 지시한대로 순종하지요. 산 속에 사흘을 머물러 추적자들을 따돌리고 여호수아에게 복귀하는데 성공합니다. 그들이 돌아와 여호수아에게 보고하는 것이 24절이지요. 함께 읽겠습니다. “또 여호수아에게 이르되 진실로 여호와께서 그 온 땅을 우리 손에 주셨으므로 그 땅의 모든 주민이 우리 앞에서 간담이 녹더이다 하더라” 이들이 보고하는 것이 무엇입니까? 작전의 성공입니까? 아니지요. 이들이 보고하고 있는 것은 하나님께서 우리에게 약속 하신 것이 진짜다. 즉, 하나님의 약속의 성취에 대한 확증을 전하고 있습니다. 24절의 결론 “진실로 여호와께서 그 온 땅을 우리 손에 주셨”다는 이 말은 라합의 입에서 나왔던 고백이지요. 결국 2장에서 일어났던 모든 사건들은 하나님의 약속이 실제로 이루어지고 있다는 것을 가장 미천한 자인 라합과 가장 부족한 자인 정탐꾼들을 통해 확증하는 과정이었음을 보여주고 있는 것입니다.

[Point 2: Obedience to the Promise Confirms Salvation]

Second, the desperation for the promise led to obedience, which completed the confirmation of salvation.

Rahab's desperation led to immediate obedience. In verse 21, she ties the scarlet cord in the window as required.

It’s interesting to note that the Hebrew word used for "cord" in this context (tiqvah) is a homonym for the Hebrew word for "hope." While the primary meaning is a literal rope, its secondary meaning is hope or expectation. This scarlet cord, then, is not just a visible sign; it is a profound testament to Rahab's intense hope for the salvation of God.

And Rahab wasn't the only one who obeyed. Verse 22 shows that the spies also followed Rahab's instructions, staying hidden in the hills for three days to evade the pursuers before successfully returning to Joshua.

What they report to Joshua in verse 24 is the powerful conclusion to this chapter. Let's read it together:

"They said to Joshua, 'The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.'"

What are they reporting? Is it merely a successful mission? No. They are reporting the confirmation of God’s promise.

The key link is this: The spies' conclusion in verse 24—"The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands"—is essentially an echo of the confession that first came from the mouth of Rahab in verse 9: "I know that the Lord has given you this land."

Ultimately, every event in Chapter 2—Rahab’s desperation, the conditions of the covenant, the scarlet cord, and the safe return—was a process orchestrated to confirm that God's promise was indeed being fulfilled, using the most unlikely person (Rahab) and the most imperfect servants (the spies).

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 라합은 단 하나의 목표, 구원을 위하여 모든 것을 내려놓았습니다. 그녀에게는 구원을 위해서라면 어떠한 조건도 받아들일 수 있는 절박함이 있었습니다. 그녀는 지금 당장 목숨이 일각에 처한 정탐꾼들보다 오히려 자신이 하나님의 구원이 필요한 사람이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그 절박함은 즉각적인 순종으로 이어졌고 우리는 그녀의 입을 통하여 하나님의 약속이 성취된 것을 들었습니다. 우리에게도 하나님을 향한 이런 절박함이 회복되기를 기도합니다.

[Conclusion]

Rahab laid down everything for one goal: salvation. She possessed a desperation that allowed her to accept any condition for the sake of rescue.

She knew, deep down, that she was the one truly "drowning" and in need of God's life raft, far more than the spies who were physically at risk. That desperation led to immediate, tangible obedience. And through her mouth and the spies' report, we hear the resounding confirmation of God’s faithful promise.

I pray that this same holy desperation would be restored in us today—a desperation for God that leads to radical obedience. May we, like Rahab, focus on the one true goal, salvation, and receive God's certain confirmation in our lives. Amen.
