10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!”

이스라엘에게 임한 하나님의 명령 (10~15절)

현대인들은 남의 이야기 듣는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다. 현대인이 아니라 저를 포함한 죄성을 가진 모든 인간이라고 해야 할까요? 그런데 들리는 남의 말이 명령이거나, 명령조라며 더욱 듣기 싫습니다. 하지만 아무리 듣기 싫어도 들어야 할 명령이 있습니다. 바로 하나님의 명령입니다.

오늘 본문에서 명령 ויצו 바이짜브라는 단어가 5회(10, 11, 13, 16, 18) 기록되어 있습니다. 여호수아는 백성의 관리들, 그러니까 중간 지도자들에게 명령합니다. 이 명령들은 모세가 하나님께 받은 율법이고, 언약입니다. 이스라엘은 하나님의 말씀에 순종해야 하는 언약의 공동체요, 율법 공동체입니다.

그런데 이 언약, 곧 하나님의 말씀은 늘 실존적이고, 현재적입니다. 하나님은 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님이십니다. 살아있는 자들의 하나님이십니다. 시내산(호렙) 언약에서 모세는 이 언약은 여호와께서 우리 조상들과 세우신 것이 아니요 오늘 여기 살아 있는 우리 곧 우리와 세우신 것이라 (신 5:3) 말했고, 또한 세겜(모압)언약을 체결할 때는 내가 이 언약과 맹세를 너희에게만 세우는 것이 아니라 오늘 우리 하나님 여호와 앞에서 우리와 함께 여기 서 있는 자와 오늘 우리와 함께 여기 있지 아니한 자에게까지이니(신 29:14~15)라고 말했습니다. 그래서 성경에 나온 모든 언약은 오늘을 살고 있는 우리들에게도 여전히 유효한 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 언약의 말씀을 들어야 합니다.

God's Command to Israel (vv. 10-15)

Modern people generally don’t like listening to others. In fact, perhaps it’s not just “modern” people, but all humans—including myself—because of our sinful nature. But among the words we dislike hearing most are commands. Yet, there is one command we must listen to, whether we like it or not: God’s command.

In today’s passage, the Hebrew word for “command,” וַיְצַו (vayetzav), appears five times (vv. 10, 11, 13, 16, 18). Joshua commands the officers of the people—that is, the intermediate leaders. These commands are not Joshua’s own; they are based on the Law and Covenant that Moses received from God. Israel is a covenant community, a people bound by the Word of God.

But this covenant—the Word of God—is not merely a historical artifact. It is always living and present. God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of the living. At Mount Sinai (Horeb), Moses said, “The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today” (Deut. 5:3). Later, when renewing the covenant at Shechem (Moab), he declared, “I am making this covenant and this oath not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God, but also with those who are not here today” (Deut. 29:14–15).This means that all the covenants in Scripture remain valid for us today. Therefore, we must listen to the Word of God.

여호수아는 백성들에게 가나안을 차지하기 위해 사흘 안에 요단 강을 건널 것을 명령합니다(11).

그런데 문제는 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파입니다. 그들은 이미 요단강 동쪽의 땅을 분배 받았습니다.

하지만 여호수아는 그들에게 형제지파들을 도와 함께 요단강을 건너 싸워 정복 사업을 마친 후에 본래의 땅으로 돌아갈 것을 명령합니다(12~15). 사실 이 명령을 따르기 힘든 명령입니다. 이 시기는 요단강이 범람하던 시기입니다. 또한 그들이 처자와 가축을 두고 전쟁을 하러 갔을 때 혹시 누군가 공격을 한다면 그것은 큰 참사로 이어질 것입니다. 어떻게 지도자인 여호수아는 이런 명령을 할 수 있을까요?

그것은 바로 여호수아가 하나님께로부터 이미 명령을 들었기 때문입니다.

이것이 진정한 지도자의 역할입니다. 사람들이 듣고 싶든 듣고 싶지 않든 하나님께 들은 것은 그대로 전파해야 합니다. 리더란 그런 자입니다. 자기가 하고 싶은 이야기를 하는 것이 아니라, 하나님께 들은 말씀을 전달할 때 리더의 말은 권위가 있습니다. 

이찬수 목사님이 제게도 권면하신 말씀이 바로 이것입니다. 설교자는 하나님께 받은 말씀을 전해야 한다는 것이었습니다. 설교자들이 하나님께 받지도 않은 자기의 생각을 전하는 것이 문제입니다.

교회도 마찬가지입니다. 정제되지 않은 자기의 생각을 뱉아내고, 쏟아내는 곳이 교회가 아닙니다. 그래서 성도들은 먼저 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 훈련을 해야 합니다. 교회에서 질서 안에서 명령할 수 있는 분들이 직분자들이고, 구역장과 같은 분들입니다. 그러면 직분자 외에는 교회에서 말도 못하는 것일까요?

아닙니다. 당연히 자유롭게 무엇이든 말할 수 있습니다. 하지만 서로 상호 간에 이래라 저래라 명령하지 말라는 것입니다. 누구든지 동등한 입장에서 서로의 의견을 자유롭게 교환할 수 있는 곳이 교회입니다.

다만 교회의 방향성과 질서는 성도들이 인정하고, 위임한 리더들에 의해 명하고 행해야 한다는 것입니다.

가정도 마찬가지입니다. 가장들이 가부장적인 꼰대가 되어서 아내건 아이들이건 자신 마음대로 할 수 있다고 생각하는 것은 죄악입니다. 가장은 먼저 하나님의 말씀, 명령을 들어야 합니다.

그리고 그 명령을 하나님의 대행자가 되어 가정에서 선포할 때, 그 명령은 힘이 있고 능력이 있습니다.

Joshua commands the people to prepare to cross the Jordan River within three days (v. 11).But there’s a complication: the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan. Joshua commands them to join their fellow Israelites in crossing the river and helping conquer the land before returning home (vv. 12–15).

This was not an easy command to obey. The Jordan was at flood stage, and leaving their families and livestock behind exposed them to potential attack. Yet Joshua gave this command boldly—because he had already received it from God.

That is the essence of true leadership. Whether people want to hear it or not, a leader must faithfully relay what God has spoken. Leadership is not about saying what one wants to say, but proclaiming what one has received from God. Only then does a leader’s word carry authority.

Pastor Lee Chan-Soo once gave me the same exhortation: a preacher must deliver only the message received from God. Many preachers err by sharing their own thoughts rather than God’s Word.

The same applies to the church. The church is not a place for unfiltered personal opinions to be vented. Believers must first learn to listen to God’s Word. In the church, those given authority—officers, small group leaders, and the like—have the responsibility to give direction within proper order.

Does this mean that only leaders may speak in church? Of course not. Everyone is free to share their thoughts. But no one should command another in a domineering way. The church is a place for mutual dialogue and humble exchange, while direction and order should be entrusted to those whom the congregation recognizes and appoints.

The same principle applies to families. A husband or father who acts like an authoritarian, thinking he can control his wife or children at will, sins against God. The head of a household must first listen to God’s command. When he proclaims that command as God’s representative in the home, his words carry true authority and power.

하나님의 명령을 들은 백성들의 반응 (16~18절)

이제 백성들, 특히 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파가 여호수아에게 답변합니다. 도저히 쉽게 순종할 수 없는 명령들이지만, 그들에게는 믿음이 있었습니다. 요단 동편에 그들이 잘 정착할 수 있도록 하셨던 하나님이, 그들의 나머지 형제 지파들 역시 요단강 서편에 잘 정착시켜 주시고 안식을 주실 것이라는 믿음입니다.

이런 믿음이 있는 자들은 말도 안 되는 두려운 명령에 2가지로 반응합니다.

먼저는 순종입니다. 그들은 여호수아가 명령한 명령에 100% 순종할 것을 약속합니다. 뿐만 아니라 자신들이 명령을 거역할 경우에는 죽임을 당해도 좋다고 언약합니다. 인간적인 차원에서 보면 이것은 그들의 잘못된 선택일 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님께서는 때로는 안전지대를 벗어나 형제들과 더불어 함께 적들과 싸울 것을 명령하십니다. 중요한 것은 그들의 헌신과 순종이 신생국가인 이스라엘이 하나되는 결정적인 역할을 합니다. 영국 트리니티 대학의 구약학 교수인 데이비드 퍼스David Firth는 “이처럼 하나님의 목적 안에서 백성이 하나되는 것은 하나님의 선물을 온전히 누리기 위해서 중요했다.” 말합니다.

인간들의 많은 생각들은 다양할지는 모르지만, 하나되기는 어렵습니다. 하지만 선포된 하나님의 말씀, 곧 언약에 대한 백성들의 순종은 하나님의 백성을 하나로 엮어줍니다.

다음은 격려입니다. 두번째 반응이 매우 놀랍고, 감격스럽습니다! 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파는 순종을 맹세하는 것을 넘어 오히려 여호수아를 격려했습니다. 오직 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 모세와 함께 계시던 것같이 당신과 함께 계시기를 원하나이다(17b). 하나님이 모세와 함께 하셨던 것처럼 여호수아와 함께 하실 것을 기원합니다. 이어서 그들은 다음과 같이 말합니다. 오직 강하고 담대하소서(18b) 당황스러울 정도로 그들은 확고한 믿음을 가지고 있습니다. 만일 불순종하는 자가 있다면 자신들이 알아서 처벌할 것을 약속하면서 여호수아님은 그저 강하고 담대하게 하나님께 받은 바 사명을 완수하라는 것입니다.

The People's Response to God's Command (vv. 16-18)

Now the people—especially the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh—respond to Joshua. Though his command is difficult to obey, they respond with faith. They believe that the same God who gave them rest and security east of the Jordan will also grant their brothers rest and settlement west of the Jordan.

People of faith respond to even fearful, unreasonable commands in two ways:

1. Obedience.They promise complete obedience to Joshua’s command, even vowing that if they disobey, they deserve death. Humanly speaking, such a vow seems extreme. Yet God sometimes calls His people out of their comfort zones to fight alongside their brothers. Their wholehearted obedience and devotion played a decisive role in uniting the newly formed nation of Israel.

   Old Testament scholar David Firth of Trinity College, Bristol, notes: “The unity of the people within God’s purpose was essential for them to fully enjoy His gifts.”Human thoughts are diverse and divisive, but obedience to the proclaimed Word of God binds His people together as one.

   
   

2. Encouragement.Their second response is deeply moving. The eastern tribes go beyond mere obedience—they encourage Joshua:“May the LORD your God be with you as He was with Moses” (v. 17b).They pray that God’s presence will rest upon Joshua as it did upon Moses. Then they add:“Only be strong and courageous!” (v. 18b).Their faith is remarkable. They even promise to deal with any who disobey, urging Joshua only to be bold and faithful in carrying out God’s mission.

이런 동역자들이 있을 때 리더는 성공할 수 있습니다. 아무리 위대한 지도자라고 해도 혼자 할 수 있는 것은 매우 작습니다. 위대한 다윗도 그를 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것을 마다하지 않는 용사들이 있었습니다.

사도 바울 역시도 수많은 동역자들이 그의 사역과 선교를 목숨을 내 놓을 각오로 도왔습니다. 바울은 실제로 브리스가와 아굴라에 대해서 그들은 내 목숨을 위하여 자기들의 목까지도 내놓았다(롬 16:4a)고

평가합니다.

그런데 주목하고 싶은 것이 있습니다. 여호수아를 격려하는 그들의 말에 주목해 봅시다. 어디서 보았던 말씀 아닌가요? 그렇습니다. 5, 6절에 하나님이 여호수아에게 하셨던 말씀입니다! 백성들이 하나님의 음성을 들었을리가 없는데, 이것이 어떻게 된 일일까요? 그들의 입에서 나오는 이 격려의 말씀을 들었을 때 여호수아는 어떤 느낌이 들었을까요? 맞습니다! 소오름~ 아마도 더욱 확신이 들었을 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 뜻이 맞구나! 하나님의 명령이구나!

그렇습니다. 진정한 격려와 위로는 다른 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 명령 자체가 바로 위로이자 격려입니다. 가장 좋은 위로와 격려는 하나님의 입에서 나온 말씀을 들려주는 것입니다. 우리는 말하기보다 듣기에 더욱 힘을 써야 합니다. 그리고 말하려면은 하나님이 주시는 말씀으로 말해야 합니다. 그리고 들려진 말씀에 순종하고, 들려진 말씀으로 서로를 격려할 때 우리 안에 있는 모든 두려움은 물러가고 우리 가정과 공동체가 하나 되는 역사가 일어날 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 들읍시다! 그리고 순종하고 서로 격려합시다!

Conclusion

Such coworkers enable a leader to succeed. Even the greatest leaders accomplish little alone. David had mighty warriors who risked their lives for him. The apostle Paul, too, had countless coworkers who supported his ministry, even at the risk of death. Of Priscilla and Aquila, Paul said, “They risked their lives for me” (Rom. 16:4a).

Now notice something important: the words with which the tribes encourage Joshua—“Be strong and courageous”—are the very same words God spoke to Joshua earlier in verses 5–6!The people likely had no way of knowing this. Imagine Joshua’s reaction when he heard their words—perhaps chills ran down his spine. He must have thought, “Yes, this truly is God’s confirmation! This is His command!”

Indeed, true encouragement and comfort come from God’s Word itself. The best comfort we can give one another is to speak God’s Word. We must be quicker to listen than to speak—and when we speak, let it be with the words God gives.

When we obey the Word we hear, and when we use that same Word to encourage one another, fear is driven away, and unity and peace are restored in our homes and communities.

Let us listen to God’s Word.Let us obey His Word.And let us encourage one another with His Word.
