4:1 하나님 앞과 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자를 심판하실 그리스도 예수 앞에서 그가 나타나실 것과 그의 나라를 두고 엄히 명하노니

4:2 너는 말씀을 전파하라 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라 범사에 오래 참음과 가르침으로 경책하며 경계하며 권하라

4:3 때가 이르리니 사람이 바른 교훈을 받지 아니하며 귀가 가려워서 자기의 사욕을 따를 스승을 많이 두고

4:4 또 그 귀를 진리에서 돌이켜 허탄한 이야기를 따르리라

4:5 그러나 너는 모든 일에 신중하여 고난을 받으며 전도자의 일을 하며 네 직무를 다하라

1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

4:6 전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고 나의 떠날 시각이 가까웠도다

4:7 나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니

4:8 이제 후로는 나를 위하여 의의 면류관이 예비되었으므로 주 곧 의로우신 재판장이 그날에 내게 주실 것이며 내게만 아니라 주의 나타나심을 사모하는 모든 자에게도니라

6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

올해 홀리윈이 감사함으로 잘 마무리가 됐습니다. 다시 한번 기도로 함께해주시고 현장에서 도와주신 모든 성도님들 감사드립니다. 올해의 성경 스토리는 다니엘의 이야기였습니다. 다니엘이 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀가서도 흔들림없이 지킨 믿음으로 그가 내린 여러 선택 가운데 하나님이 그를 보호해주시고 지켜주신 이적들을 살펴봤습니다. 그러므로 현재 바벨론과 같은 이 미국 땅을 살아가는 아이들이 다니엘처럼 하나님을 경외하는 선택들을 할 때 살아서 보호하시고 지켜주시는 하나님을 만나기를 바라며, “Dare to be like Daniel!”를 외쳤습니다. 홀리윈이 쉽지 않은 이유는 우리가 10월 31일 할로윈 당일 때 이 행사를 진행하기 때문입니다. 미국에서는 너무나 자연스러운 문화로 자리잡은 할로윈 날에 “세상적 문화에 참여하지 말고 함께 교회와서 예배드립시다”라는 메세지는 다소 듣기 거북할 수 있습니다. 거기에 더 나아가서 올해 저는 조금 더 대담하게 “할로윈은 1년 중 영적으로 가장 악한 날입니다. 마귀는 우는 사자 같이 달려드는데 무분별하게 당하지 말고 영적 전쟁으로부터 우리 아이들을 보호하고 영적인 눈을 열어 악함을 분별할 줄 알아야 합니다”라며 봉사자들과 학부모님들에게 우리가 왜 홀리윈을 하는지 강력하게 어필했었습니다. 이런 저의 작은 외침을 비웃기라도하듯 이 지역사회에서 여전히 할로윈은 코스튬을 입으며 재미있게 추억 쌓고 사탕 나눠먹는 날로 여겨짐을 받았습니다. ‘내가 너무 유난 떨었니?’ 하는 의구심과 허무함이 마음을 덮어올 때, 이재은 사모님께서 주신 대답에서 위로를 얻었습니다. “이렇게 외치는 사람도 있어야지요.” 맞습니다. 여러분, 우리는 말씀을 전파하라는 사명을 받은 자들입니다. 말씀 전파는 다른 사람들의 반응을 살피면서 하거나 기분이 내킬 때마다 하는 것이 아니라 항상해야 되는 것입니다. 사도 바울은 말씀하십니다. “말씀을 전파하라. 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라” (2절). 우리가 왜 이 일에 이렇게 힘써야 하는지 오늘 말씀을 통해 살펴보기를 원합니다.

This year’s HolyWIN event concluded with gratitude and joy. Once again, I want to thank all the church members who supported us through prayer and helped on-site. This year’s Bible story was about Daniel — how, even as a captive in Babylon, he remained steadfast in his faith, and how God protected and blessed him through the choices he made in obedience. Just as Daniel stood firm in his faith in Babylon, our hope was that children living in this modern-day “Babylon” — America — would learn to make godly choices and encounter the living God who protects and sustains those who fear Him. With that heart, we declared together: “Dare to be like Daniel!” HolyWIN is not an easy event to hold because it takes place on October 31 — Halloween itself. In America, Halloween is such an ingrained cultural event that saying, “Don’t take part in worldly culture; instead, come to church and worship,” can sound uncomfortable or even offensive to some. This year, I took it a step further and boldly proclaimed to volunteers and parents: “Halloween is the most spiritually evil day of the year. The devil prowls like a roaring lion, and we must not be caught off guard. We must protect our children from spiritual warfare and teach them to discern evil with their spiritual eyes.”

Despite this, our local community continued to treat Halloween as just a fun day of costumes, candy, and making memories. When doubts crept in — “Was I being too extreme?” — I found comfort in something our head pastor's wife said to me: “There needs to be someone who speaks out like you do.” She was right. Friends, we are those who have been called to proclaim the Word of God. Spreading the Word is not something we do when it feels convenient or when others are receptive — it’s something we must do at all times. As the Apostle Paul said: “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2). Let’s look at why we must continue this mission.

첫째, 말씀을 전해야 하는 이유는 주님이 반드시 다시 오시기 때문입니다.

2절에 사도 바울은 엄중한 명령을 디모데에게 내립니다. 그건 바로 말씀을 전파하라는 것입니다. 이것에 있어서 1절에 꽤나 길게 그가 이러한 명령을 내리는 근거를 설명합니다. 그건 사도 바울 자신에게서 오는 것이 아닙니다. 그는 하나님의 임재와 그리스도 예수의 재림, 심판, 영원한 나라를 근거로 이 명령을 내리고 있습니다. 우리는 주님이 반드시 다시 오시리라 믿습니다. 그리고 주님이 다시 오는 그 날에는 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자 모두가 예수 그리스도의 심판대 앞에 서게 될 것입니다. 그리고 목자가 양과 염소를 나누듯 구별하여 양은 오른편에 염소는 왼편에 두실 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (마 25:32-33). 예수님의 오른편에 선 자들은 영생을, 왼편에 선 자들은 영벌에 처할 것입니다. 우리는 모두 예수님을 구주로 믿는 믿음으로 구원을 받았음을 확신할 수 있습니다. 그리고 두렵고 떨리는 마음으로 예수님의 오른편에 남아있는지를 우리 스스로를 점검해야 합니다. 반면에 아직 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접하지 못한 자들은 모두 왼편에 서있습니다. 우리가 사랑하고 친분있는 내 친척, 이웃, 친구, 가족들 중에서 예수님을 믿지 않는 자들이 얼마나 있습니까? 우리는 우리만 오른편에 있다고 안심하고 말 것이 아니라 왼편에 머물러 있는 자들을 위해 계속해서 말씀을 전해야 합니다. 주님은 반드시 다시 오시기 때문입니다.

1. We must spread the Word because the Lord will surely return.

In verse 2, Paul gives Timothy a solemn charge: Preach the Word. In verse 1, he explains the basis of this command — not from his own authority, but grounded in the presence of God, the return of Christ, judgment, and His eternal kingdom. We believe the Lord will surely return. On that day, both the living and the dead will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. As a shepherd separates sheep from goats, Jesus will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left (Matthew 25:32–33). Those on the right will receive eternal life; those on the left, eternal punishment. We can have assurance of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, but we must also examine ourselves — are we still standing at His right hand with reverent hearts? Meanwhile, there are many — relatives, neighbors, friends, even family members — who do not yet believe in Jesus. We cannot be content that we are safe on the right; we must keep preaching the Word to those still standing on the left. Because the Lord will surely return.

둘째, 말씀을 전해야 하는 이유는 사람들이 진리의 말씀을 듣지 않기 때문입니다.

사도 바울은 3절에서 “때가 이르리니”라는 표현으로 말을 시작합니다. 미래적인 표현이지만 이미 사도 바울 시대에도 시작된 현실을 가리키며 미래에 상황이 더욱 악화될 것이라는 암시입니다. 그는 말씀을 듣지 않는 유형의 사람들의 특성을 다음과 같이 표현했습니다. 첫째로 사람들이 바른 교훈을 받지 않을 것입니다 (3a절). 여기서 ‘받지 아니한다’는 말은 단순한 무관심이 아닙니다. 오히려 건전한 가르침에 대한 적극적 거부와 혐오를 나타냅니다. 둘째로 귀가 가려워서 자기 사욕을 따를 스승을 많이 둘 것입니다 (3b절). 여기서 ‘귀가 가려워서’라는 표현은 진리보다 호기심을 충족시켜 줄 새롭고 흥미로운 가르침을 찾는 병적 상태를 묘사합니다. 요즘 시대에는 왠만한 자극적인 것으로는 사람들의 관심을 받을 수 없고 더욱 더 자극적인 컨텐츠들이 쏟아져 나오고 있습니다. 이는 그들의 마음 속에 진리를 향한 거룩한 욕망이 아닌 죄에 장악된 욕망으로 가득차여 있기 때문입니다. 셋째로 귀를 진리에서 돌이켜 허탄한 이야기를 따를 것입니다 (4절). 허탄한 이야기들은 진리와 무관한 거짓된 신화나 꾸며낸 이야기들을 말합니다. 현대 시대로 따지면 ‘YOLO’, ‘사후세계는 없다’, ‘LGBTQ’ 같은 사상들이 그러할 것입니다. 이러한 허탄한 이야기들은 잠시 우리의 기분을 즐겁게 만들 수 있습니다. 회개를 해야 한다느니, 죄인임을 고백해야 한다는 기독교적 가르침은 마음을 불편하게 하니 더욱 귀를 막을 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 5절에 사도 바울은 디모데에게 “너는 모든 일에 신중하여 고난을 받으며 전도자의 일을 하며 네 직무를 다하라”고 말씀하십니다. 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지, 외면을 당하든지, 주변 환경에 마음을 뺏기지 말고 우리는 우리에게 맡겨진 사명을 대담하게 해내야 합니다.

2. We must spread the Word because people no longer listen to the truth.

In verse 3, Paul begins with, “For the time will come…” — a future expression referring to something that had already begun in his time but would worsen as time went on. He describes three types of people who reject the truth:1. Those who will not endure sound doctrine (v.3a). This is not mere indifference — it’s an active rejection and hatred of wholesome teaching. 2. Those with itching ears who gather teachers to suit their desires (v.3b). “Itching ears” describes a restless craving for novelty — a desire for teachings that entertain rather than transform. In our age, it takes ever more shocking content to grab people’s attention, because their desires are not driven by holiness but by sin. 3. Those who turn away from truth and follow myths (v.4). These myths may include worldly philosophies like “YOLO,” “There’s no afterlife,” or ideologies such as “LGBTQ.” Such ideas may momentarily please us, but unlike the gospel, they do not confront sin or call for repentance. Still, in verse 5, Paul exhorts Timothy: “Keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” Whether people listen or reject you, whether conditions seem favorable or not — we must boldly fulfill the mission entrusted to us.

셋째, 말씀을 전해야 하는 이유는 사명을 마친 이들이 떠나기 때문입니다.

사도 바울은 6절에 “나의 떠날 시각이 가까웠도다”라고 말하며 그의 죽음이 임박했음을 고백합니다. 그는 지난 30여 년의 사역을 돌아보며 그가 “전제와 같이 내가 벌써 부어지고”라고 표현합니다. 전제는 제물 위에 포도주나 기름을 부어드리는 제사이죠. 이처럼 자신의 생애를 하나님께 온전히 드리는 헌신으로 전제에 비유했습니다. 7절에 “나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니”라고 말하며 그가 복음 전수 사역에 대한 신실함을 끝까지 완수했음을 알 수 있습니다. 그리고 현재 그는 천국에서 의의 면류관을 받고 큰 영광을 누리고 있을 것입니다. 디모데가 바울의 뒤를 이은 것처럼, 이제는 우리가 그 사명을 이어 받았습니다. 복음을 전파하는 사명은 주의 나타내심을 사모하는 모든 자에게 주어지는 부르심입니다.

3. We must spread the Word because those who have finished their mission are leaving.

In verse 6, Paul says, “The time for my departure is near.” Acknowledging that his death was imminent, he likens his life to a drink offering poured out before God — a symbol of complete devotion. He continues in verse 7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Paul faithfully completed his mission to spread the gospel. Now, in heaven, he surely wears the crown of righteousness and rejoices in eternal glory. Just as Timothy succeeded Paul, now it is our turn to carry on that mission. The calling to spread the gospel is given to all who long for the Lord’s appearance.

의로우신 재판장이신 예수님께서 끝까지 사명을 완수한 자들에게 수여하실 “의의 면류관”이 천국에 준비되어 있다는 약속의 말씀이 가슴을 뜨겁게 하지 않으십니까? 힘들어도 내려놓고싶고 쉬고 싶어도 우리를 믿고 선택하신 주님께서 필요한 모든 능력도 채워주시니 이 사명을 어떻게 감당치 못하겠습니까? 전도자로서의 마땅한 사명을 신실히 다 해낼 때 예수님께서는 우리에게 “잘 하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아”라고 말하실 것입니다.

Doesn’t your heart burn at the promise that the righteous Judge, Jesus, has prepared a crown of righteousness for all who complete their mission faithfully? Even when we feel weary or want to give up, the Lord — who chose us and believes in us — will supply all the strength we need. When we fulfill our calling as evangelists with faithfulness, Jesus Himself will say to us: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
