3:1 너는 이것을 알라 말세에 고통하는 때가 이르러

3:2 사람들이 자기를 사랑하며 돈을 사랑하며 자랑하며 교만하며 비방하며 부모를 거역하며 감사하지 아니하며 거룩하지 아니하며 

3:3 무정하며 원통함을 풀지 아니하며 모함하며 절제하지 못하며 사나우며 선한 것을 좋아하지 아니하며

3:4 배신하며 조급하며 자만하며 쾌락을 사랑하기를 하나님 사랑하는 것보다 더하며

3:5 경건의 모양은 있으나 경건의 능력은 부인하니 이같은 자들에게서  네가 돌아서라

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

3:6 그들 중에 남의 집에 가만히 들어가 어리석은 여자를 유인하는 자들이 있으니 그 여자는 죄를 중히 지고 여러 가지 욕심에 끌린 바 되어

3:7 항상 배우나 끝내 진리의 지식에 이를 수 없느니라

3:8 얀네와 얌브레가 모세를 대적한 것 같이 그들도 진리를 대적하니 이 사람들은 그 마음이 부패한 자요 믿음에 관하여는 버림을 받은 자들이라

3:9 그러나 그들이 더 나아가지 못할 것은 저 두 사람이 된 것과 같이 그들의 어리석음이 드러날 것임이라

6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

                  어제 우리는 하나님의 주인 되심과 종인 우리가 해야 할 일에 대해서 말씀을 나누었습니다. 하나님의 견고한 터 위에 선 우리는 진리의 말씀을 옳게 분별하며 자신을 깨끗하게 하여 말싸움을 피하라고 말씀하셨었지요. 모든 사람, 특별히, 거역하는 자까지 온유함으로 훈계하라고 명령하셨던 것을 기억하실 것입니다. 이는 혹, 하나님이 그들을 회개하게 하셔서 진리를 알게 하실지도 모르기 때문이었습니다. 그러나 바울은 오늘의 말씀을 통해 디모데에게 단호하게 명령합니다. “이 같은 자들에게서 네가 돌아서라.” 도대체 왜 어제까지만해도 “거역하는 자를 온유함으로 훈계할지니” 명령하였던 바울이 이렇게까지 단호하게 ‘돌아서라’ 라고 명령하는가? 바울이 말하는 이 같은 자들이란 대체 어떤 사람들인가? 오늘은 ‘어리석은 자들에게서 네가 돌아서라’ 라는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Yesterday, we discussed God's Sovereignty and the Servant's Responsibility. We learned that as we stand on God’s solid foundation, we must correctly handle the word of truth, cleanse ourselves, and avoid quarreling.

And we especially remember Paul’s command to instruct even those who oppose us with gentleness, in the hope that God might grant them repentance and lead them to a knowledge of the truth.

But in today’s passage, Paul gives Timothy a starkly different, uncompromising command: "Have nothing to do with them."

Why did Paul, who just yesterday commanded him to "gently instruct those who oppose him," suddenly demand such a definitive withdrawal—to "turn away"? Who are these people Paul is talking about?

Today, I want to share a message titled: Avoid the Foolish People.

                  먼저 1절입니다. 바울은 오늘 말씀의 첫 시작을 “너는 이것을 알라 말세에 고통하는 때가 이르러” 라고 전하고 있습니다. 이 말씀을 원문으로 보면, “’그러나,’ 너는 이것을 알아라. 말세에 ‘어려운 때’가 올 것이다.”라는 말입니다. 그러나. 즉 어제까지는 거짓 가르침을 전하는 사람들을 온유하게 훈계하라고 명령하였으나 네가 반드시 알아야 할 것이 있다는 것입니다. 그것이 무엇입니까? 말세에 어려운 때가 온다는 것이지요. 여기서 말세란 우리가 흔히 생각하는 예수님의 재림의 때를 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 사도행전 2:16-17에서 베드로가 오순절의 성령강림을 오해하는 사람들에게 요엘서를 인용해서 이렇게 말하지요. “말세에 내가 내 영을 모든 육체에 부어주리니” 이 말씀을 통해 보면 본문의 말세는 예수님이 오심으로, 또 성령님의 오심으로 이미 시작된 시대를 말하고 있습니다. 즉, 디모데가 살아가는 그 시대가 이미 말세이며 지금 ‘다루기 어렵고,’ ‘위험한’ 때가 이르렀다는 말입니다. 거짓 교사들을 온유함으로 훈계하여야 하지만 네가 알아야 할 것은 그것이 매우 어렵고 위험하다라는 경고의 말씀을 또한 하고 있는 것이지요. 2-5절은 그들이 어떤 사람들인지 묘사하고 있습니다.

Let's look at verse 1. Paul begins this chapter with a strong warning: "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days."

The original text starts with a word meaning "But" or "However." In other words, Paul is saying: “Yesterday, I commanded you to gently instruct those who oppose you. But, there is something you absolutely must know.”

And what is this crucial knowledge? That "terrible times" will come in the last days. The term "last days" here does not refer solely to the time of Jesus’ second coming that we often imagine. In Acts 2:16-17, Peter quotes the prophet Joel, saying, "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people."

This tells us that the "last days" began with the coming of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In fact, the era Timothy was living in was already the last days, and it was a time that was "hard to deal with" and "dangerous."

Paul is cautioning Timothy: While you must instruct false teachers with gentleness, you must also be aware that this task is incredibly difficult and dangerous. Verses 2-5 describe exactly who these people are.

2절을 함께 읽겠습니다. “사람들이 자기를 사랑하며 돈을 사랑하며 자랑하며 교만하며 비방하며 부모를 거역하며 감사하지 아니하며 거룩하지 아니하며”  “자기를 사랑하며” 라고 시작되는 이 목록은 점점 더 인간관계가 무너지고 하나님과 멀어지며, 4절에서 그 끝은 결국 “쾌락을 사랑하기를 하나님 사랑하는 것보다 더”하게 된다고 말하고 있습니다. 5절은 이들의 이런 특징을 단 한 줄로 표현하고 있지요. 바로 “경건의 모양은 있으나 경건의 능력은 부인하니” 라는 말씀입니다. 이들은 겉으로는 무언가 아는 것 같고, 말솜씨가 유려하며, 하나님을 위해서 지금까지 다른 사람들이 하지 못했던 일들을 하는 것 같이 보입니다. 겉으로 볼 때 그들은 너무나 하나님을 사랑하는 것처럼 보여요. 그러나 사실 그들이 진짜 사랑하는 것은 자기 자신과 돈 그리고 쾌락입니다. 이것이 거짓목자의 특징이에요. 만약 여러분들이 누군가가 거짓 목자인지 아닌지를 보려면 이 특징들을 파고들어보시면 분별하기가 한결 쉬우실 겁니다. 자, 이들이 경건의 모양은 있지만 경건의 능력은 부인한다고 하지 않습니까? 그렇다면 경건의 능력이란 무엇일까요? 디모데후서 1:7-8 입니다. “하나님이 우리에게 주신 것은 두려워하는 영이 아니요 오직 능력과 사랑과 절제하는 영이니…주를 위하여 갇힌 자 된 나를 부끄러워하지 말고 오직 하나님의 능력을 따라 복음과 함께 고난을 받으라” 바로 성령의 능력으로 나를 사랑하는 것이 아니라 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하며 쾌락을 사랑하는 것이 아니라 절제하는 것. 또 복음을 위하여 고난받기까지 인내하는 것. 이것이 본문에서 말하고 있는 경건의 능력입니다. 이들이 위험한 것은 이렇게 경건의 능력을 부인하며 진리를 대적하는 자들인데도 자신들의 목적을 이루기 위해 교묘하게 그 모습을 흉내내는 자들이기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 5절에서 바울은 “이같은 자들에게서 네가 돌아서라.” 라고 단호하게 말씀하는 것입니다. 오늘 본문 안에 명령형이 단 하나 밖에 없는데 그것이 바로 이 ‘돌아서라’ 라고 하는 동사입니다. 이는 단교 또는 파문하기까지 이들과 완전히 끊어져야함을 말하고 있는 것이지요.

Let's read verse 2 together:

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy..."

This list starts with "lovers of themselves" and progresses toward a breakdown of relationships, alienation from God, and ultimately ends in verse 4: "lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God."

Verse 5 summarizes all these traits in one powerful sentence: "having a form of godliness but denying its power."

These people look like they know something. They may have eloquent speech. They may appear to be doing great things for God that others have not accomplished. On the surface, they may look like they deeply love God. But in reality, what they truly love are themselves, money, and pleasure.

This is the trademark of a false shepherd. If you want to discern if someone is a false teacher, examine these traits; it will make the task much easier.

They have a form of godliness but deny its power. What, then, is the power of godliness? We find the answer in 2 Timothy 1:7-8:

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-control... Do not be ashamed of me or of being imprisoned for the Lord, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God."

The power of godliness is the Spirit's power to love God and neighbor rather than self; to practice self-control rather than pleasure; and to endure suffering for the sake of the gospel.

The danger lies in the fact that these people, while denying the true power of godliness and opposing the truth, cunningly imitate the outward appearance of devotion to achieve their own aims.

And this leads to Paul’s uncompromising command: "Have nothing to do with them." This is the only verb in the imperative mood in this entire passage, and it is a forceful command. It means a complete break—even to the point of excommunication—a decisive turning away.

아니 목사님 어제의 말씀과 많이 다르지 않습니까? 라고 물으시는 분이 계실 것 같습니다. 어제는 온유함으로 훈계하라고 하시더니 오늘은 돌아서라니요. 네 그렇습니다. 그렇기에 오늘 말씀은 시작이 “그러나 너는 이것을 알아라”로 시작하는 것이지요. 온유함으로 이들을 훈계하였던 것은 하나님께서 혹시 이들에게 회개를 하게 하실지도 모르기 때문입니다. 그러나 그들이 그 훈계를 듣지 않고 회개하지 않으며 오히려 교묘하게 경건의 모습만을 갖추고 공동체를 혼란스럽게 한다면 우리는 단호하게 그들을 공동체에서 끊어내야 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 하지 않는다면 어떤 일이 벌어집니까? 6절 말씀을 보니 “그들 중에 남의 집에 가만히 들어가 어리석은 여자를 유인하는 자들이 있으니”라고 말씀하십니다. 공동체 안에 연약한 지체부터 공격을 당합니다. 남의 집인데 가만히 들어갈 수 있었다는 것은 아직 말씀을 제대로 분별하지 못하는 연약한 지체가 자신의 집을 이들에게 열어주었다는 말이지요. 참으로 안타까운 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 7절을 보니 이 여인들은 배우고자 하는 마음이 있음에도 끝내 진리의 지식에 이를 수 없다고 말하고 있습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 그들은 거짓을 말하는 사람들이기 때문입니다. 겉으로는 지식이 있는 것처럼 보이지만 사실 그들이야말로 진리를 대적하는 어리석은 자들이기 때문입니다. 9절을 함께 읽겠습니다. “그러나 그들이 더 나아가지 못할 것은 저 두 사람이 된 것과 같이 그들의 어리석음이 드러날 것임이라.” 그들은 더 나아가지 못한다고 합니다. 시간이 흐르면 그들의 어리석음이 드러날 것이기 때문입니다. 우리는 이 어리석은 자들에게서 돌아서야 하는 것입니다.

You might be asking, "Pastor, isn't this very different from yesterday's message?" Yes, it is. That's why today’s passage begins with "But mark this."

The gentleness commanded yesterday was rooted in the hope that "God will grant them repentance." But if they refuse that gentle instruction, if they refuse to repent, and instead cunningly adopt a false form of godliness to disrupt the community, then we must resolutely cut them off from the community.

What happens if we do not? Verse 6 says: "They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women..." The weak members of the community are attacked first. The fact that they can "worm their way" into homes implies that a vulnerable member, who had not yet properly discerned the truth, opened the door to them. This is indeed a tragic situation.

Verse 7 says these women are "always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth." Why? Because the people teaching them are speaking lies. Though they appear knowledgeable, they are, in fact, the foolish people who oppose the truth.

Let’s read verse 9 together:

"But they will not get very far, because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be plain to everyone."

They will not get very far, because in time, their folly will be exposed. And we must turn away from these foolish people.

말씀을 맺습니다. 그러나 우리는 이것을 알아야 합니다. 지금이 바로 그 어려운 때입니다. 너무나 많은 말씀들과 가르침들이 모든 통로로 우리에게 흘러들어오는 지금. 지금이 바로 말세입니다. 그렇다면 여러분은 어떻게 경건의 모양만 있고 그 능력을 부인하는 사람들을 알아보시겠습니까? 시간이 흐르면 그들의 어리석음이 드러난다는 말은 지금은 알아보기 어렵다는 말 아니겠습니까? 오늘의 말씀은 “그들에게서 네가 돌아서라” 라고 말하고 있는데 어떻게 그들의 거짓을 분별하시겠습니까? 바로 진리의 지식, 말씀을 통해서입니다. 진리의 말씀을 옳게 분별하여야 합니다. 그래서 항상 말씀을 배우십시오. 여러분이 진리의 지식에 이르시기를 축원합니다. 그리하여 어리석은 자들을 분별하여 그들에게서 돌아서시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

We must mark this: This is the terrible time. Now, with countless messages and teachings flowing to us through every channel, this is truly the last days.

How will you recognize those who have only a form of godliness but deny its power?

The verse says that their folly will be exposed over time, which implies that it is difficult to spot right now. So, how will you discern their falsehood when Paul commands, "Turn away from them"?

The answer is through the knowledge of the truth—through the Word. You must correctly handle the word of truth.

Therefore, I urge you: Always learn the Word. May you come to a knowledge of the truth. May you discern the foolish and turn away from them, in the name of the Lord. Amen.
