20251030 [새벽묵상] 우리의 왕, 오직 한 분이신 여호와만을 경배하라 | Worship the One and Only King, the LORD (슥/Zec 14:9~15)

ree

9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.

10 The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. 11 It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.

12 This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14 Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15 A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.

The World Series is currently underway in baseball. As a resident of Seattle, I can't help but feel disappointed that the Seattle Mariners aren't in the Toronto Blue Jays' place. Perhaps I should have brought more of the Boston Red Sox's spirit with me! When I first moved to Boston for my studies in 2007, the Red Sox won the World Series. I happened to live just a 10-minute walk from Fenway Park, the Red Sox's home stadium, and the entire neighborhood was buzzing—even I, who had little interest in baseball, was surprised by the intense excitement. It was chaos! I thought, "Is this really something to get this excited about?" But the passion was enormous. If the Seattle Mariners had made it to the World Series for the first time this year and even won, I believe many people in Seattle would have been just as ecstatic. After all, the Mariners are Seattle's team.

The same principle applies to today's passage. It proclaims that on the Day of the LORD, the LORD will become King over all the earth. And whose King is the LORD? He is your King. The Mariners, whom we cheer for, would bring back an empty cup to Seattle, even if they won. But the LORD, our King, promises eternal peace for His people. Our King will strike down all the adversaries of His people. Therefore, the only thing required of us is to worship the one and only LORD. We must worship Him fervently. Today, I want us to reflect on the message: Worship the One and Only King, the LORD.

I. The LORD Alone is King Over All the Earth, and His People Will Have Peace. (9-11)

The passage declares that the Day of the LORD is the day when God alone will be the unique King of the entire universe, and His people under His rule will enjoy eternal holiness and peace.

Let us read verse 9 together: "And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one."

This verse brings to mind the 'Hear, O Israel' from Deuteronomy 6:4-5: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one." The next part is: "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." This is such a famous passage that anyone listening to Zechariah's words would immediately connect the phrase "the LORD will be one" with the obedience required of them.

But now, God says He will be King over all the earth. What does this mean? It means God's rule will extend not only over Israel, who worship Him in the promised land, but over all nations of the world. The entire world will worship and serve the LORD as their sole King. That is the Day of the LORD.

Now, let's look at what kind of King He will be for His people. Verse 10 guarantees physical security. The phrase that the whole land around Judah will become like the Arabah means the land will become flat like a plain. However, Jerusalem will be raised up and remain in its place. The names of areas mentioned, like the 'Benjamin Gate,' represent the ends of the city—north, south, east, and west. The surrounding area becoming flat while the entire city stands tall means the city will become impregnable. In short, it means they will be physically protected and safe from external invasion.

Is it only physical safety? Let us read verse 11 together: "And people shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more devoted to destruction, but Jerusalem shall dwell in security." It might be natural for people to flock to a safe city. But God says, "there shall be no more devoted to destruction (herem)." This means they will no longer be an object of herem, or total destruction. It signifies that the root of all sin and the cause of judgment that led to the corruption of God's people have completely disappeared. Now, only eternal holiness and peace will rest upon them. The term 'security' (baṭaḥ) implies an inner stability rooted in trust in God. Since God is our King, we, His people, are safe both externally and internally.

II. The King Will Execute Thorough Judgment on the Adversaries of His People. (12-15)

In stark contrast, the LORD announces severe judgment on the enemies of His people. Let us read verse 12: "And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths."

God predicts a plague on all who fight against Jerusalem, His people. The word 'rot' emphasizes that they were healthy but their flesh will suddenly decompose. The original text repeats the same verb in different forms three times, stressing that God's supernatural judgment will fall upon them—a judgment they cannot escape.

Furthermore, verse 13 states that God will throw them into great confusion (mehumah). This is reminiscent of the time when Gideon and his 300 men blew trumpets and broke jars, causing the Midianite army to turn on each other and self-destruct. These enemies will face God's supernatural external plague and, internally, will be plunged into confusion, leading to self-destruction. Verse 15 confirms that the same plague will strike all the animals, such as horses and mules, and all their military resources. The judgment on the adversaries of God's people will be absolute.

Amidst this description of judgment, there is an interesting verse. Let us read verse 14: "And Judah also will fight at Jerusalem, and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—gold, silver, and garments in great abundance."

Why is this verse inserted between the description of judgment (13 and 15)? I believe it serves to emphasize the thoroughness of God's judgment by drawing a sharp contrast between the destiny of His people and that of His adversaries. If you recall the situation in verses 1-2 of this chapter, the nations were plundering the wealth of Jerusalem. Verse 14 is a complete reversal of that situation. When the LORD intervenes in the war, the positions of the plunderers and the plundered are entirely inverted. When the LORD becomes King over all the earth, under the protection of the King, we, His people, inherit not only what was taken from us but also the vast wealth of the adversaries.

ree

Conclusion

The LORD is our King. This kingship is not established merely by promise or faith; it is a dominion that has been, and will be, proven and completed through fierce judgment on His adversaries and eternal salvation for His people.

Today, let us enthrone the one and only LORD as King over every area of our lives. May you live a life of worship, experiencing His peace, relying on His power, and achieving victory under His complete dominion. Amen.
