20251029 [새벽묵상] 여호와께서 행하시는 여호와의 날 | The Day of the Lord: A Day of Divine Action (슥/Zec 14:1~8)

ree

1 A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.

2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.

8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.

Last weekend, Gimcheon City hosted the Gimcheon Gimbap Festival. Gimcheon has a population of about 130,000 people, but over the two days of the festival, there were an astonishing 150,000 visitors. How did Gimcheon City manage to start such a successful festival? Can you see the connection between "Gimcheon" and "Gimbap"?

The city conducted a survey to assess its urban image, and interestingly, many young respondents associated the name 'Gimcheon' primarily with a popular chain restaurant called 'Gimbap Cheonguk' (Gimbap Heaven). The city could have dismissed this response as trivial, but instead, they saw it as an opportunity. They utilized this reverse thinking to launch the Gimbap Festival, a name that evokes 'Gimbap Heaven.' True to its name, the festival in Gimcheon, which already sounds like 'Gimbap Heaven,' was a huge success because it was filled with gimbap.

Similarly, today’s Scripture speaks of the Day of the Lord. Just as the Gimbap Festival in Gimcheon was full of gimbap, the Day of the Lord is full of the actions of the Lord. On this day, the Lord possesses all sovereignty, the Lord establishes the battleground, the Lord goes out and fights the war, the Lord is present, the Lord protects, and on the day known only to the Lord, living waters will flow. It is truly the Day of the Lord, where the Lord is the central actor. Today, through these actions of the Lord on the Day of the Lord, we desire to know God more deeply.

I. The Day of the Lord: Calamity Under Divine Sovereignty (1-3)

The first element of the Day of the Lord is that calamity will strike Jerusalem, but this too is under God’s sovereignty. Let’s read verses 1-2 together:

"Behold, a day of the Lord is coming, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped, and half of the city shall go into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city."

This passage reminds us of yesterday’s message: that two-thirds shall perish, but one-third shall remain. Indeed, calamity will come upon Jerusalem on the Day of the Lord. Jerusalem will fall to the invasion of foreign nations, and half of its people will be taken captive. Some might see Judah's collapse at the hands of foreigners and doubt God's sovereignty and rule. However, God says, "I will gather" the nations. This teaches us that all sovereignty belongs to God. Even the day of suffering is under God's jurisdiction.

If you look closely at verse 2, even though the suffering comes under God's sovereignty, God says that "the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city." Furthermore, we learn from the next verse, verse 3, that God is actually gathering the adversaries to create a battleground. It was a process designed to defeat them. Let's read verse 3 together:

"Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle."

The Lord Himself goes out and fights against them. There are times when these moments of suffering feel as if they are simply meant to torment us. But under God's sovereignty, they are but a passing time meant to achieve God's purpose. We must remember that even in that moment, God protects and preserves His people. We must remember that everything is under God's sovereignty, and He is our Commander, our Captain, who goes out into the field to fight our battles for us.

II. The Day of the Lord: Divine Presence and Protection (4-5)

Secondly, on the Day of the Lord, God will be present in Jerusalem and protect His people. Verse 4 tells us that the Lord will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem, and the mountain will be split in two, creating a very large valley. Why would the Lord split the Mount of Olives in half like this? Let’s read the next verse, verse 5, together:

"And the valley of My mountains shall be stopped up, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him."

The phrase "the valley of My mountains" (NIV translates as "the valley of the mountains") implies that God is preparing a place of refuge for His people amidst the battle, allowing them to escape. God does not only fight the battle for us through His presence; He also splits the mountain in two to provide us a way to flee. The phrase "the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal" shows that the valley will be connected all the way to Azal, making it an advantageous route for escape. Just as the Red Sea parted to become a path to life and God protected them from the Egyptian chariots with a pillar of cloud, now the Mount of Olives splits to allow them to escape through the valley. Zechariah expresses this scene by saying, "Then the Lord my God will come." My God, our Savior, our Rock of Refuge, will come with all the heavenly hosts, "all the holy ones." The Day of the Lord is the day when the Lord of hosts is present and protects His people.

III. The Day of the Lord: A New World Known Only to God (6-8)

Thirdly, a new world will open on the Day of the Lord, a day known only to the Lord. Verse 6, which foretells "the Day of the Lord," begins with the declaration, "On that day there shall be no light." The radiant things, such as the sun and moon, will disappear. What does this mean? The basic principle of the created world as we know it is the existence of day and night, which defines a 'day.' Genesis 1:5 says, "God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day." This is the fundamental framework of the world we know: a day with light and a night with darkness.

However, verse 7 speaks of a day known only to the Lord. Let's read verse 7 together:

"It shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light."

It is a day that is neither day nor night, and there shall be light even at evening time. This is not a day that belongs to the known world order. This is a prophecy that a new day of order, a new world, will come. The Lord, who created heaven and earth, who said "Let there be light" and created day and night from that light, is now prophesying a new world of a new order. What is that world like? Let’s read verse 8:

"On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer and in winter."

On the Day of the Lord, living waters will flow. This living water, which splits into two streams and flows to the respective seas, will flow constantly, without ceasing in summer or winter, supplying life. This prophecy evokes the vision seen by Ezekiel, the vision of the river of life flowing from the new Temple. God's life will be given to all people, overflowing and abundant. All will come to the throne of the Lamb and quench their thirst in the river of life. The Day of the Lord, known only to the Lord, is the new world that will open on that day.

Conclusion

The message today shows us that the Day of the Lord is filled with the actions of the Lord. Through these actions of the Lord, we have seen that the Lord alone is sovereign, the Lord alone is our Captain, the Lord alone is our Protector, the Lord alone is the Creator of the whole world, and the Lord alone is our Life.

Are you going through tribulation? Trust in the sovereignty of the Lord. The Lord will fight the battle you must fight for you. Are you barely surviving the day with a dry faith? The living water of Christ will quench your thirst. Look forward to the Lord. The Lord will act.
