9:9 시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를지어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀새끼니라

9:10 내가 에브라임의 병거와 예루살렘의 말을 끊겠고 전쟁하는 활도 끊으리니 그가 이방 사람에게 화평을 전할 것이요 그의 통치는 바다에서 바다까지 이르고 유브라데 강에서 땅 끝까지 이르리라

9:11 또 너로 말할진대 네 언약의 피로 말미암아 내가 네 갇힌 자들을 물 없는 구덩이에서 놓았나니

9:12 갇혀 있으나 소망을 품은 자들아 너희는 요새로 돌아올지니라 내가 오늘도 이르노라 내가 네게 갑절이나 갚을 것이라

9:13 내가 유다를 당긴 활로 삼고 에브라임을 끼운 화살로 삼았으니 시온아 내가 네 자식들을 일으켜 헬라 자식들을 치게 하며 너를 용사의 칼과 같게 하리라

The Coming of Zion’s King

9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!

    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!

See, your king comes to you,

    righteous and victorious,

lowly and riding on a donkey,

    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim

    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,

    and the battle bow will be broken.

He will proclaim peace to the nations.

    His rule will extend from sea to sea

    and from the River to the ends of the earth.

11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,

    I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.

12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;

    even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow

    and fill it with Ephraim.

I will rouse your sons, Zion,

    against your sons, Greece,

    and make you like a warrior’s sword.

9:14 여호와께서 그들 위에 나타나서 그들의 화살을 번개 같이 쏘아 내실 것이며 주 여호와께서 나팔을 불게 하시며 남방 회호리바람을 타고 가실 것이라

9:15 만군의 여호와께서 그들을 호위하시리니 그들이 원수를 삼키며 물맷돌을 밟을 것이며 그들이 피를 마시고 즐거이 부르기를 술취한 것 같이 할 것인즉 피가 가득한 동이와도 같고 피 묻은 제단 모퉁이와도 같을 것이라

9:16 이 날에 그들의 하나님 여호와께서 그들을 자기 백성의 양 떼 같이 구원하시리니 그들이 왕관의 보석 같이 여호와의 땅에 빛나리로다

9:17 그의 형통함과 그의 아름다움이 어찌 그리 큰지 곡식은 청년을, 새 포도주는 처녀를 강건하게 하리라

The Lord Will Appear

14 Then the Lord will appear over them;

    his arrow will flash like lightning.

The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;

    he will march in the storms of the south,

15     and the Lord Almighty will shield them.

They will destroy

    and overcome with slingstones.

They will drink and roar as with wine;

    they will be full like a bowl

    used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.

16 The Lord their God will save his people on that day

    as a shepherd saves his flock.

They will sparkle in his land

    like jewels in a crown.

17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!

    Grain will make the young men thrive,

    and new wine the young women.

제가 볼 때 우리 교회에서 1년 중 가장 시끄러운 주일을 하루 꼽자면 종려 주일이라고 생각하는데요. 그 이유는 2부 예배 시작하기 한 15분 전부터 초록색 옷을 맞춰 입은 프리스쿨과 키즈 아이들이 교회 로비에서 교회로 들어오시는 모든 이들을 “호산나! 호산나!” 외치며 맞이하기 때문입니다. 이렇게 하는 이유는 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박히시기 전 예루살렘으로 승리의 입성을 하신 종려 주일을 기억하며, 과거 선지자를 통해 예언된 말씀을 이루신 신실하신 예수님을 함께 찬양하기 위함입니다. 그리고 그 과거 선지자의 말씀이 바로 오늘 본문인 9절 말씀입니다. 매년 종려 주일마다 이 9절만 딱 뽑아서 읽다가 이렇게 전체 문맥을 따라 읽어보니 감회가 새로운데요. 오늘 본문은 앞으로 오실 메시아의 모습을 독자들에게 뚜렷하게 나타내고 있습니다. 앞으로 오실 메시아는 공의로우시고 겸손하신 구원의 왕이시며, 온 세상을 통치하시는 평화의 왕이시며, 언약 백성을 책임지고 회복하시는 분이십니다. 당시 이 말씀을 받은 백성들은 그들의 찬란한 미래에 대한 약속을 통해 깊은 위로와 소망을 얻었을 것입니다. 평화의 왕으로 오실 메시아에 대한 예언을 마음에 새기며 그를 통해 회복의 날이 임하기를 간절히 고대했을 것입니다. 같은 마음으로 이제 우리는 다시 오실 재림의 예수님을 손 꼽아 기다리고 있습니다. 이미 승리하신 예수님을 기억하며 오늘 말씀을 통해 앞으로 오실 메시아가 어떤 분인지를 살펴보며 당시 유다 백성들처럼 위로를 얻는 새벽되기를 원합니다.

If I were to pick the loudest Sunday of the year at our church, I think it would be Palm Sunday. The reason is that about 15 minutes before the second service begins, our preschool and kids, dressed in matching green outfits, fill the church lobby shouting “Hosanna! Hosanna!” to greet everyone entering the church. The reason we do this is to remember Palm Sunday — the day Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem before being crucified — and to praise our faithful Lord who fulfilled the prophecy spoken long ago through the prophets. That very prophecy is found in today’s passage, verse 9. Every year on Palm Sunday, we usually read only this verse, but reading it now within the full context feels new and moving. This passage vividly portrays the coming Messiah: a righteous and humble King of salvation, a King of peace who will rule over all the earth, and the One who will take responsibility for and restore His covenant people. The people who first received this prophecy must have found deep comfort and hope in the promise of their glorious future. They engraved the prophecy of the coming King of peace in their hearts and longed earnestly for the day of restoration that would come through Him. In the same way, we now eagerly await the return of Jesus Christ, who will come again. As we remember our victorious Savior, may this morning’s message encourage us — just as it did the people of Judah — as we look at who the coming Messiah is.

1)    공의로우시고 겸손하신 구원의 왕

먼저, 9절의 시작은 하나님께서 시온과 예루살렘의 딸들에게 크게 기뻐하라 명하심으로 시작합니다. 그 이유는 바로 그들을 위한 왕이 올 것이기 때문입니다. 그리고 이어서 그 오실 왕에 대한 특징들을 묘사합니다. 그는 공의로우시며, 구원을 베푸시며, 겸손하시며, 그리고 나귀를 타고 온다고 나옵니다. 과거 고대 근동에서는 왕들이 말뿐 아니라 나귀도 교통수단으로 사용했습니다. 성경 곳곳에서도 다윗 왕이 나귀를 교통수단으로 언급하는 내용들이 나옵니다 (삼하 16:2, 왕상 1:33). 그리고 이처럼 말이 아닌 나귀를 탈 때는 전쟁의 때가 아닌 평화의 시기에만 탔음을 알 수 있습니다. 그러므로 나귀는 겸손과 평화를 상징합니다. 그런데 9절 하반절에 이 왕이 나귀 중에서도 작은 나귀 새끼를 타고 온다고 말합니다. 하늘의 권세를 내려놓고 가장 연약한 아기의 모습으로 이 땅에 내려오신 겸손하신 예수님의 모습이 연상됩니다. 이처럼 메시아께서 어린 나귀를 탈 것이라는 스가랴의 예언은 예수님께서 종려 주일에 나귀를 타고 사람들의 환호를 받으며 예루살렘에 입성하신 사건을 통해 성취되었습니다 (마 21:7). 그리고 신실하게 하나님이 맡기신 십자가 사역을 마치시고 구원을 이루셨습니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 보여주신 겸손함과 자기희생의 모범은 현재 그리스도인으로 살아가는 우리들이 보고 배울 삶의 자세입니다.

1)    The Righteous and Humble King of Salvation

Verse 9 begins with God commanding the daughters of Zion and Jerusalem to rejoice greatly — for their King is coming to them. Then, the verse describes the characteristics of this coming King: He is righteous, brings salvation, is humble, and comes riding on a donkey.

In the ancient Near East, kings used not only horses but also donkeys as a means of transportation. Scripture mentions several times that King David used donkeys for travel (2 Samuel 16:2; 1 Kings 1:33). However, donkeys were used during times of peace, not war. Thus, the donkey symbolizes humility and peace.

The verse also specifies that this King rides on “a young donkey, the foal of a donkey.” This image reminds us of Jesus, who laid aside heavenly authority and came to earth in the most vulnerable form — as a baby. Zechariah’s prophecy that the Messiah would ride on a young donkey was fulfilled when Jesus entered Jerusalem to the cheers of the people on Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:7).

Faithfully, He completed the work of the cross entrusted to Him by God and accomplished salvation. The humility and self-sacrifice Jesus demonstrated serve as the model for how we, as believers, are called to live today.

2)    온 세상을 통치하시는 평화의 왕

그리고 10절에서 메시아는 평화의 왕으로서 모든 이방 사람에게 화평을 전할 것입니다. 그러므로 더 이상 언약 백성이 의지하던 병거와 군마, 그리고 전쟁을 위한 활과 같은 도구는 필요하지 않을 것 입니다. 그리고 그는 온 세상을 통치하는 왕이시기에 그의 권세와 통치가 바다에서 바다까지, 유프라테스강에서 땅끝까지 이를 것이라고 예언합니다. 그리고 이러한 10절의 말씀은 아직 성취되지 않았습니다. 이 예언의 말씀은 예수님이 다시 돌아오실 재림 때에 온전히 성취될 것입니다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “예수께서 이르시되 네가 말하였느니라 그러나 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이 후에 인자가 권능의 우편에 앉아 있는 것과 하늘 구름을 타고 오는 것을 너희가 보리라 하시니” (마 26:64). 그리고 다시 돌아오실 때에는 나귀가 아닌 백마를 타고 오시며 “만왕의 왕이요 만주의 주”라 높이심을 받으실 것입니다 (계 19:14,16).

2) The King of Peace Who Rules the Whole World

In verse 10, the Messiah is described as the King of peace who will proclaim peace to all nations. Therefore, chariots, warhorses, and bows — instruments of war once relied upon by the covenant people — will no longer be needed. As the King who reigns over the entire earth, His authority and dominion will extend “from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.” This prophecy, however, has not yet been fully fulfilled. It will be completely realized at the second coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matthew 26:64). When He returns, He will not come on a donkey but on a white horse and will be exalted as “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:14, 16).

3)    언약 백성을 책임지시고 회복하시는 메시아

이제 11절에서는 하나님께서 피의 언약을 맺은 유다 백성을 구원하시겠다고 약속합니다. 백성 중 사로잡혀 갇힌 자들을 물 없는 구덩이에서 건져 내겠다고 하십니다. 여기에 나온 “물 없는 구덩이”란 유다가 절망과 고난을 겪었던 바벨론 포로기를 상징합니다. 그리고 12절에서는 비록 현실은 갇혀 있으나 소망을 잃지 않은 자들에게 “요새로 돌아오라”고 하십니다. 이 요새는 예루살렘이라 볼 수 있고 또 하나님 그 자체라고 볼 수도 있습니다. 이렇게 하나님을 피난처로 삼고 하나님께 돌아오는 자들에게는 하나님께서 당한 고통에 비해 두 배의 복으로 갚아 주실 것을 약속하십니다. 이러한 12절의 약속의 말씀은 당시 유대 백성들 뿐만 아니라 현재 예수님의 두 번째 재림을 기다리는 우리 또한 기억해야 합니다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “보라 내가 속히 오리니 내가 줄 상이 내게 있어 각 사람에게 그가 행한 대로 갚아 주리라” (계 22:12). 마지막 때에 예수님께서 다시 오실 때에 주님의 백성이 주님과 함께 놀라운 영광과 회복의 축복을 누릴 것입니다.

3) The Messiah Who Restores and Redeems His Covenant People

In verse 11, God promises to save His covenant people — those bound to Him by the blood of the covenant. He declares that He will free the prisoners from the waterless pit. This “waterless pit” symbolizes the Babylonian exile, the period of despair and suffering that Judah endured. Then, in verse 12, God calls out to the prisoners of hope, saying, “Return to your fortress.” This fortress can represent Jerusalem, but it can also symbolize God Himself — our true refuge. To those who return to Him, God promises to restore blessings twofold for every hardship they have endured. This promise is not only for the people of Judah in Zechariah’s time but also for us today, who await the second coming of Jesus Christ. The Lord said, “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me, to repay each one for what he has done” (Revelation 22:12). When Jesus returns, His people will share in His glory and experience complete restoration and blessing.

전능하신 여호와 하나님은 끊임없이 유다 백성들에게 구원과 회복을 약속하십니다. 하나님과 피의 언약을 맺은 백성을 대적하는 무리는 그 누구도 하나님의 심판을 피할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 직접 그들 위에 나타나서 그들을 무찌르시고 압도적인 승리를 거둘 것이기 때문입니다 (15절). 이제 예수를 구주로 고백하는 우리는 모두 하나님께서 예수님의 피값으로 사신 새로운 언약 백성입니다. 비록 지금 우리의 삶을 바라보면 죄의 늪에 빠져 매일 사탄과의 전쟁에서 실패하는 듯합니다. 그러나 우리가 싸우는 이 싸움은 우리만의 싸움이 아니라 하나님이 승리케하시는 싸움임을 잊지맙시다. 겸손하신 구원의 왕, 온 세상을 통치하실 평화의 왕이신 예수님 안에서 소망을 잃지 않을 때 우리는 왕관의 보석과 같이 큰 영광과 형통함을 누리게 될 줄로 믿습니다.

The Almighty Lord continually promises salvation and restoration to His people, just as He did to Judah. No one who stands against the people of God — those sealed by the blood of His covenant — can escape His judgment. For God Himself will appear, strike down His enemies, and claim overwhelming victory (verse 15). Now, all of us who confess Jesus as Savior are the new covenant people — redeemed by His precious blood. Though we may feel trapped in sin and losing battles against the enemy each day, we must remember that this fight is not ours alone. It is the Lord’s battle, and He is the one who grants victory. When we do not lose hope in Jesus — the humble King of salvation and the King of peace who will rule the world — we will, like jewels in a crown, shine with great glory and experience the fullness of His blessing.
