15:22 그러므로 또한 내가 너희에게 가려 하던 것이 여러 번 막혔더니

22 This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.

15:23 이제는 이 지방에 일할 곳이 없고 또 여러 해 전부터 언제든지 서바나로 갈 때에 너희에게 가기를 바라고 있었으니

15:24 이는 지나가는 길에 너희를 보고 먼저 너희와 사귐으로 얼마간 기쁨을 가진 후에 너희가 그리로 보내주기를 바람이라

15:25 그러나 이제는 내가 성도를 섬기는 일로 예루살렘에 가노니

15:26 이는 마게도냐와 아가야 사람들이 예루살렘 성도 중 가난한 자들을 위하여 기쁘게 얼마를 연보 하였음이라

15:27 저희가 기뻐서 하였거니와 또한 저희는 그들에게 빚진 자니 만일 이방인들이 그들의 영적인 것을 나눠 가졌으면 육적인 것으로 그들을 섬기는 것이 마땅하니라

15:28 그러므로 내가 이 일을 마치고 이 열매를 그들에게 확증한 후에 너희에게 들렀다가 서바나로 가리라

15:29 내가 너희에게 나아갈 때에 그리스도의 충만한 복을 가지고 갈 줄을 아노라

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

23 But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you, 24 I plan to do so when I go to Spain. I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while. 25 Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem in the service of the Lord’s people there. 26 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem. 27 They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings. 28 So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way. 29 I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. 31 Pray that I may be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people there, 32 so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed. 33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

사도 바울의 로마를 향한 편지가 거의 막바지에 다다랐습니다. 사도 바울은 오늘 본문을 통해서 앞으로의 그가 행할 사역의 방향과 계획을 알려주고 있습니다. 현재 바울이 계획하고 있는 세 가지 여정은 다음과 같습니다. 첫째, 현재 이 편지를 쓰고 있는 고린도에서 예루살렘으로 가는 것입니다 (25절). 둘째, 예루살렘에서의 일을 마무리한 후 로마로 가고자 합니다 (28b절). 셋째, 로마에서 스페인으로 가길 원합니다 (28c절). 그리고 이 일이 진행되기 위해서 그는 교회가 연합되어야 함을 우리에게 알려주고 있습니다. 하나님의 사역은 절대 혼자 할 수 있는 일이 아니고 공동체적 사역이기 때문입니다. 또 우리는 사도 바울이 가지고 있던 원대한 열정과 비전을 발견합니다. 23절에 “이제는 이 지방에 일할 곳이 없고 또 여러 해 전부터 언제든지 서바나로 갈 때에 너희에게 가기를 바라고 있었으니”라고 말하며 당시 로마 제국의 서방 한계로 여겨졌던 복음 미전파 지역인 스페인에 복음을 전하고자하는 그의 열망을 볼 수 있습니다. 더욱 구체적으로 사도 바울이 세웠던 계획들을 살펴보며 우리가 하나님의 일을 하는 자들로서 가져야 할 자세를 살펴보길 원합니다.

Paul’s letter to the Romans is now coming to its conclusion. In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul shares the direction and plans for his future ministry. He describes three journeys he is currently planning. First, he intends to go from Corinth, where he is writing this letter, to Jerusalem (v.25).Second, after completing his work in Jerusalem, he plans to go to Rome (v.28b).Third, from Rome, he hopes to travel to Spain (v.28c). Through this, Paul reminds us of the importance of unity within the church, because the work of God can never be accomplished alone — it is always a work of the community. We also see in Paul a grand vision and burning passion. In verse 23, he says, “But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you when I go to Spain…” Through this statement, we can sense his deep desire to preach the gospel even to Spain — a region considered, at that time, to be the westernmost limit of the Roman Empire, where the gospel had not yet been proclaimed.

Let us take a closer look at Paul’s specific plans and learn what kind of attitude we should have as those who are called to serve God’s work.

1)    고린도에서 예루살렘으로

먼저, 사도 바울이 예루살렘으로 가야하는 이유는 연보 전달 사역을 위함입니다. ‘연보’라고 함은 성도 간의 나눔과 협력을 강조하는 개념의 기부금 또는 모금액을 뜻합니다. 26절에 “이는 마게도냐와 아가야 사람들이 예루살렘 성도 중 가난한 자들을 위하여 기쁘게 얼마를 연보하였음이라”라고 말합니다. 예루살렘 성도 중 가난한 사람이 많았는데 그 이유는 사도행전 11장에서 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 로마의 제 4대 황제인 글라우디오 통치 기간때 (A.D. 41-54) 큰 흉년이 들었기 때문입니다 (행 11:28). 이 일로 말미암아 당시 많은 이방 교회가 예루살렘을 위한 헌금 운동에 동참했습니다. 그리고 사도 바울은 이 연보 사역을 매우 중요하게 여겼습니다. 왜냐하면 그에게 예루살렘을 위한 연보 전달은 단순히 물질적 자선을 베푸는 일을 넘어서 그리스도의 교회 전체가 하나 됨을 확인하는 중요한 사역이었기 때문입니다. 즉 이방인 교회와 유대인 교회를 연결하는 것이 바로 연보를 전하는 일이라고 여겼습니다. 그는 27절에 이방인들이 유대인들에게 영적 빚을 졌으니 이방인들은 육적인 것으로 보답하는 것이 마땅하다고 말합니다.

1)    From Corinth to Jerusalem

Paul’s reason for going to Jerusalem was to deliver the offering that had been collected. The term “offering” here refers to a contribution or donation emphasizing sharing and cooperation among believers. In verse 26, Paul writes, “For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem.”Many believers in Jerusalem were poor, and we can understand why by looking at Acts 11. During the reign of the Roman emperor Claudius (A.D. 41–54), a great famine occurred (Acts 11:28). Because of this, many Gentile churches participated in a fundraising effort to help the church in Jerusalem. Paul regarded this ministry of collecting and delivering the offering as extremely important — not merely as an act of charity, but as a means of expressing the unity of the body of Christ. He viewed it as a way of connecting the Gentile churches and the Jewish believers. In verse 27, Paul explains that since the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they ought also to share their material blessings with them.

2)    예루살렘에서 로마로

사도 바울이 로마를 방문하고자 하는 열정은 이미 로마서 시작할 때 독자들에게 밝혔습니다. 먼저 사도 바울은 그들에게 신령한 은사를 나누어 주어 그들을 견고하게 하기 위해 방문하기를 원했습니다 (롬 1:11). 그리고 오늘 본문에서 24절을 보면 그는 스페인으로 가기 전에 로마에 먼저 들려 그들과 교제하며 기쁨을 나누기 원하고, 그 후에 로마 공동체가 자신을 스페인으로 보내 주기를 요청합니다. 여기서 사도 바울이 말하는 교제는 단순한 방문이 아닌 인격적 교제를 말합니다. 즉 사도 바울은 먼저 그들에게 하나님이 베푸신 구원의 은혜를 들려주며 그들의 믿음을 견고케 하길 원했습니다. 그리고 그들에게 자신의 스페인 선교 계획을 알린 후 그들에게 선교적 파트너로서 초청하고 있는 것입니다. 그리고 이 모든 여정을 위해 사도 바울은 로마 교회 성도들에게 기도를 부탁합니다 (30절). 그리고 하나님의 뜻에 따라 로마에 방문하여 그들과 함께 하기를 원합니다 (32절). 결국 그가 상상하고 원했던 모습은 아니었을지 몰라도 그는 결국 A.D. 60년경 로마에 압송되어 도착합니다.

2) From Jerusalem to Rome

Paul’s desire to visit Rome was already made known at the beginning of his letter. He longed to visit them in order to impart some spiritual gift to make them strong (Romans 1:11).In today’s passage, verse 24 shows his hope to visit Rome on his way to Spain — to enjoy fellowship and mutual encouragement with the believers there, and to ask for their support in sending him to Spain. The fellowship Paul speaks of is not merely a casual visit, but a deep, personal relationship. He wanted to strengthen their faith by proclaiming the grace of salvation given by God and, after sharing his missionary vision for Spain, to invite them to join him as partners in the gospel. For all these journeys, Paul asks the believers in Rome to pray for him (v.30). He desires to come to them by God’s will and to be refreshed in their company (v.32).Although his arrival in Rome did not happen in the way he had imagined, he eventually reached the city around A.D. 60 — as a prisoner sent there under guard.

3)    로마에서 스페인으로

사도 바울은 간절히 스페인으로 가기를 원했습니다. 당시 사람들은 스페인을 세상의 끝이라고 여겼습니다. 그러므로 그가 스페인으로 가려 한 것은 이방인 선교의 최종 목표이자 '땅끝'까지 복음을 전하려는 사명감의 표현이었습니다. 그는 이방인의 사도로 부름 받은 그의 역할을 끝까지 감내하길 원했습니다. 그러나 성경 어느 곳에도 그가 스페인으로 갔다는 말씀은 나오지 않습니다. 우리가 알고 있는 사도행전의 마지막 28장은 A.D. 61년으로 그가 가택연금되어 2년 동안 계속해서 복음을 전한 것으로 끝이납니다. 그러나 그 이후 로마에서 잠시 풀려났다가 다시 A.D. 66-67년경 2차로 투옥됩니다. 이 잠깐 풀려났을 시기에 사도 바울은 다시 한번 전도 여행을 떠나 마케도니아와 그레데 등 여러 소아시아 지역을 다니며 디모데전서와 디도서를 기록했다고 봅니다. 그리고 이 시기에 많은 사람들이 그가 스페인도 갔을거라고 믿고 있습니다. 결론적으로 그는 한 평생을 바쳐 그리스도의 충만한 복을 온 땅에 전함에 최선을 다했습니다.

3) From Rome to Spain

Paul earnestly desired to go to Spain. At that time, Spain was considered the end of the known world. Thus, his plan to go there symbolized the ultimate goal of Gentile mission — to preach the gospel “to the ends of the earth.” As the Apostle to the Gentiles, Paul wanted to fulfill his calling to the very end. However, Scripture never records whether he actually reached Spain. The final chapter of Acts (chapter 28), set around A.D. 61, ends with Paul under house arrest in Rome for two years, continuing to proclaim the gospel. Historical tradition suggests that he was released for a short time, traveled again through regions such as Macedonia and Crete, and wrote 1 Timothy and Titus during this period. Many early Christians believed that during this brief release, Paul indeed made it to Spain before being imprisoned again around A.D. 66–67. Ultimately, he devoted his entire life to proclaiming the fullness of Christ’s blessing to all the world.

오늘 본문을 살펴봤을 때 계속해서 반복적으로 강조된 단어가 무엇이라고 생각하십니까? 저는 “기쁨”이라는 단어가 눈에 많이 띄었습니다 (24절, 26절, 27절, 32절). 결국 사도 바울을 지치지 않게 하고 계속해서 땅 끝까지 복음의 전파의 비전을 놓치지 않게 한 그 힘은 ‘기쁨’에서 왔습니다. 결국 하나님의 일을 하는 자로서 우리가 품어야 할 자세는 기쁨을 놓치지 않는 것입니다. 이것이 어떠한 기쁨입니까? 만달란트 빚진 자가 그의 죄를 탕감 받았을 때 느낄 수 있는 기쁨일 것입니다. 우리 스스로는 우리의 죄에 합당한 죄값을 내고 구원을 받을 수 없는 존재들입니다. 그러나 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 대속하심으로 말미암아 우리는 참 된 죄 사함을 누릴 수 있게 되었습니다. 그러므로 사도 바울은 이러한 진리의 깨달은 자들이 그 구원의 은혜에 감격하고 감사함을 통해 깨닫는 기쁨으로 서로를 섬기며 하나님 나라의 연합을 이루어 가길 원했습니다. 예수님께서는 제자들에게 명령하셨습니다. “오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라” (행 1:8). 오늘 새벽 성도님 모두 성령님이 주시는 참된 기쁨으로 충만하길 원합니다. 그리고 그 기쁨으로 서로를 섬기며, 속한 공동체 안에서 예수님의 증인되는 하루를 사시길 기도드립니다.

If we look closely at today’s passage, we can notice one word that keeps appearing repeatedly — “joy.” (vv.24, 26, 27, 32)The strength that kept Paul from growing weary, that sustained his vision to proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth, was joy.

What kind of joy is this?It is the joy of one who has been forgiven an unpayable debt — like the man forgiven of ten thousand talents in Jesus’ parable. We could never pay the price for our sins or earn salvation on our own. But through Jesus Christ, who bore our sins, we have received true forgiveness and salvation. Therefore, Paul desired that those who understood this truth would serve one another with gratitude and joy, building unity within God’s kingdom. Jesus commanded His disciples,“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) May each of you this morning be filled with the true joy that the Holy Spirit gives.And with that joy, may you serve one another and live today as faithful witnesses of Jesus within your community.
