5:1 그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자

5:2 또한 그로 말미암아 우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐거워하느니라

5:3 다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를,

5:4 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다

5:5 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니

1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

5:6 우리가 아직 연약한 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨도다

5:7 의인을 위하여 죽는 자가 쉽지 않고 선인을 위하여 용감히 죽는 자가 혹 있거니와

5:8 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

5:9 그러면 이제 우리가 그의 피로 말미암아 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 더욱 그로 말미암아 진노하심에서 구원을 받을 것이니

5:10 곧 우리가 원수 되었을 때에 그의 아들의 죽으심으로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었은즉 화목하게 된 자로서는 더욱 그의 살아나심으로 말미암아 구원을 받을 것이니라

5:11 그뿐 아니라 이제 우리로 화목하게 하신 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님 안에서 또한 즐거워하느니라

9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

지난 10일 수요일에 Charlie Kirk이라는 사람이 총에 맞아 죽는 사건이 발생했습니다. 그는 신실한 크리스천임과 동시에 굉장히 보수적인 성향을 가진 자였는데요. 그의 이러한 극우적인 성향으로 인해 평소에 많은 사람들의 지지를 또한 미움을 샀습니다. 그는 다양한 장소에서 다른 시각을 가진 사람들과 토론을 하며 상대방을 향해 정확한 정보력과 뒤지지 않는 말빨로 유명세를 탔습니다. 그 중에서도 그가 자주 하던 일은 미국 내 대학교 캠퍼스에서 많은 대학생들에게 그들이 가지고 있는 생각과 믿음에 반박하는 질문을 던지며 대화의 창을 열었습니다. 그가 이렇게 토론을 한 이유에는 이러한 믿음이 뒷받침 되었기 때문입니다. “사람들이 대화를 멈추면 폭력이 시작됩니다. 그때 내전이 일어나는데, 왜냐하면 상대방이 너무 악하다고 생각하게 되고, 그들의 인간성을 잃어버리게 되기 때문입니다.” 워싱턴주에도 최근에 방문해 지난 5월에 유덥에서 토론을 했었죠. 이번 사건도 그가 비슷한 행사로 유타의 대학교에서 대학생들과 토론을 하던 중 대낮에 모두가 보는 앞에서 일어났습니다. 이 사건은 많은 사람들에게 충격을 주었는데요. 무엇보다도 충격인 것은 평소에 그를 싫어하던 사람들이 그의 죽음을 통쾌해하며 기뻐하는 영상을 찍어서 소셜미디어에 올려 많은 질타를 받고 있습니다.

On Wednesday the 10th, there was an incident where a man named Charlie Kirk was shot and killed. He was a devout Christian and at the same time had very conservative views. Because of his far-right stance, he received both much support and much hatred from people. He became known for debating with those who held different perspectives, using his accurate command of information and sharp debating skills. One of the things he did most often was visit university campuses across the United States, engaging students by asking questions that challenged their assumptions and beliefs, thus opening the door for dialogue. The reason he pursued such debates was rooted in his conviction: “When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. That’s when civil war happens, because you start to think the other side is so evil, and they lose their humanity.” He even visited Washington State recently and held a debate at the University of Washington this past May. This recent incident occurred in broad daylight, right in front of everyone, while he was engaged in a similar discussion with students at a university in Utah. This shocked many people. What was even more shocking was that some who disliked him celebrated his death, recording their rejoicing and posting the videos on social media, for which they received heavy criticism.

아무리 서로의 의견이 다르다고해서 누군가의 죽음을, 특히나 살인을 옹호하고 정당화 할 수 없을 것입니다. 이처럼 사람들은 점점 더 악해지고 세상은 점점 더 어둠으로 가득 차는 것 같습니다. 자신과 같은 의견과 믿음을 가지고 있지 않은 자들은 모두 다 적으로 인식되는 안타까운 현실입니다. Charlie Kirk는 사람들 앞에서 그의 신앙과 예수님을 주님으로 고백함을 두려워하지 않았습니다. 그리고 눈과 귀가 가리어져 진리를 깨닫지 못하는 자들에게 끊임없이 복음을 전했습니다. 그리고 그렇게 용기있게 행동한 그의 끝은 결국 총살이었습니다. 이것이 끝이라면 우리에게 희망이 있을까요? 기독교인이란 정체성만으로 받는 반응이 미움이고 비웃음이고 심지어 총살의 타겟이 된다면, 두렵지 않습니까? 오늘 본문에서 사도 바울은 그것이 끝이 아님을 우리에게 말해주고 있습니다. 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 인해 비록 세상과는 불화를 이룰지라도 하나님과 누리는 화평으로 소망을 가지며 기쁨으로 어떠한 어려움도 극복할 수 있다고 말합니다. 함께 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받은 자가 얻게되는 하나님의 선물을 살펴보길 원합니다.

No matter how different opinions may be, no one’s death—especially murder—can ever be justified or celebrated. And yet, it seems people are becoming more evil, and the world more filled with darkness. The sad reality is that anyone who does not share the same views or beliefs is regarded as an enemy. Charlie Kirk was never ashamed to confess his faith and proclaim Jesus as Lord in front of people. He tirelessly preached the gospel to those whose eyes and ears were blinded from recognizing the truth. And in the end, his courageous actions led to his being shot to death. If that is the end, is there any hope left for us? If simply being a Christian means the world’s response will be hatred, ridicule, or even being targeted for murder, isn’t that terrifying? Yet in today’s passage, the Apostle Paul tells us this is not the end. Because of our faith in Christ, even though it may put us at odds with the world, we can have peace with God, hold on to hope, and overcome any hardship with joy. Let us look together at the gifts God grants to those who have been justified by faith.

첫 번째 선물은 하나님과의 화평입니다. 우리가 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리게 됐다고 1절에서 말하고 있습니다. 거룩한 하나님 앞에 거룩하지 못한 죄인인 우리들은 절대 하나님과 화평함을 누릴 수 없는 존재들이었습니다. 그러나 오직 우리를 사랑하심으로 말미암아 독생자 예수의 신실하심으로 우리의 죄값을 대신 지불하게 하셨습니다. “사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 속하기 위하여 화목 제물로 그 아들을 보내셨음이라” (요일 4:10). 이제 우리는 예수 그리스도가 나를 대신하여 죽으심으로 하나님과 나의 관계가 화목해 졌음을 믿기만 하면 되는 것입니다. 이렇게 했을 때 사도 바울은 2절에서 “우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며”라고 말합니다. 이러한 은혜는 우리 스스로가 얻을 수 없으며 오직 예수 그리스도를 통해서만 얻을 수 있습니다.

The first gift is peace with God. Verse 1 says that through faith in Jesus Christ we now have peace with God. As sinful and unholy beings, we could never enjoy peace with the holy God. But out of His great love, God sent His only Son Jesus, whose faithfulness paid the penalty of our sins on our behalf. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:10). Now all we need to do is believe that Jesus died in our place, reconciling us to God. As Paul says in verse 2, “Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand.” Such grace is not something we can achieve ourselves but only something received through Christ alone.

두 번째 선물은 소망입니다. 하나님과의 화평은 우리가 하나님과의 관계 속에서 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐겁게 합니다 (2b절). 그리고 이러한 즐거움은 우리를 환난 가운데에서도 즐겁게 만든다고 3절에 나옵니다. “환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다” (3b-4절). 이미 예수님께서는 세상이 우리를 미워할 것이라고 예고하셨습니다. “너희가 세상에 속하였으면 세상이 자기의 것을 사랑할 것이나 너희는 세상에 속한 자가 아니요 도리어 내가 너희를 세상에서 택하였기 때문에 세상이 너희를 미워하느니라” (요 15:18). 하나님의 아들 예수님이 직접 이 땅에 오셔도 그의 말을 듣지 않고 그를 박해한 자들이 오직 그를 따르는 우리를 좋아하고 잘해 줄 이유가 전혀 없다는 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 예수님을 사랑하는 마음으로 그가 우리에게 내리신 가장 큰 계명, “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라… 네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라” (마 22:37-39) 이 계명을 환난 중에도 감당할 때, 우리는 인내할 수 있고, 인내를 통해 단련되며, 소망을 이룹니다. 우리가 소망을 가질 수 있는 것은 세상이 우리를 향해 아무리 핍박해도 우리가 예수 그리스도 안에서 갖게 되는 미래 구원에 대한 확신은 빼앗을 수 없기 때문입니다.

The second gift is hope. Our peace with God allows us to rejoice in the hope of sharing in God’s glory (v. 2b). And, as verse 3 continues, this joy even enables us to rejoice in suffering: “Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope” (vv. 3b–4). Jesus already warned us that the world would hate us: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (John 15:18). If people persecuted God’s own Son when He came to earth, there is no reason to think they will love or treat kindly those who follow Him. Nevertheless, when we obey Jesus’ greatest commandment, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… and your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39), even in the midst of tribulation, we learn endurance, which leads to character, which results in hope. Our hope rests in the assurance of salvation in Christ—a hope no persecution can take away.

세 번째 선물은 기쁨입니다. 우리는 오직 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님 안에서 참된 기쁨을 느낄 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 성령님을 통해 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음 속에 부어지기 때문입니다 (5절). 아무 자격없고 잘난거 하나 없는 오히려 죄인인 나를 위해 하나님께서 당신의 아들을 보내시어 나를 대신하여 죽이신 이 사건이 믿어지는 역사는 오직 성령님의 은혜가 아니고서는 일어날 수 없습니다. 나를 너무나 사랑하셔서 아들을 죽일 수 밖에 없었다는 그 아버지의 심정을 이해한다면 오직 감사와 기쁨과 찬양만이 남을 수 밖에 없습니다. 8절 다시 읽어보겠습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라” 아멘! 본래 하나님의 진노 아래 죽음의 심판을 받을 수 밖에 없던 우리가 이제는 예수 그리스도를 통하여 하나님과 화평을 누리고 천국의 소망을 꿈꿀 수 있게 됐습니다. 이 기쁘고도 좋은 소식을 우리끼리만 간직하고 있어서야 되겠습니까?

The third gift is joy. We can experience true joy in God only through Jesus Christ, because the Holy Spirit pours out God’s love into our hearts (v. 5). The miracle of believing that God sent His Son to die in our place, though we were unworthy sinners, is something that can happen only by the grace of the Holy Spirit. When we grasp the heart of the Father, who loved us so much that He gave up His Son, we cannot help but respond with gratitude, joy, and praise. Let us read verse 8 again: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Amen! Once condemned to death under God’s wrath, we now have peace with Him through Christ and can live in the hope of heaven. Should we keep such good and joyful news to ourselves?

Charlie Kirk의 죽음은 너무나 비극적이고 낙담스럽습니다. 이 슬픈 상황 가운데에서 오늘 나눈 말씀대로 소망을 가질 수 있는 것은 그가 현재 천국에 있을 거라는 확신과 하나님께서는 악한 자들이 해하려 계획한 것을 선으로 바꾸어 사용하실 것이라는 믿음입니다. 많은 그리스도인들이 그의 죽음을 도화선 삼아서 그의 발자취를 따라 더욱 강력하게 복음을 전파하고 세상 가운데에서 우뚝 솟아나길, 그가 설립했던 비영리 단체, “Turning Point USA”라는 이름과 같이 이 미국 땅에 복음의 터닝 포인트가 있기를 함께 기도하길 원합니다. 그리고 우리의 삶 가운데에서도 환난이 소망과 기쁨의 터닝 포인트로 전환되는 역사가 일어나길 기도드립니다.

Charlie Kirk’s death is deeply tragic and discouraging. Yet, even in this sorrowful situation, we can hold on to hope because we are assured that he is now in heaven, and we trust that God will use for good what evil intended for harm. May his death spark a fire among Christians to rise boldly in proclaiming the gospel, following in his footsteps. Just as the name of the nonprofit he founded, Turning Point USA, suggests, may this nation experience a gospel turning point. And in our own lives as well, may tribulation be transformed into a turning point of hope and joy.
