20250904 [새벽묵상] 각 사람에게 행한대로 보응하시는 하나님 | God Will Repay Each Person According to Their Deeds (롬/Rom 2:1~16)

ree

1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

Yesterday, we discussed those who refuse to acknowledge God in their hearts. We learned that God’s wrath would be revealed against them, leaving them to their own spiritual, sexual, and moral depravity.

But today’s passage doesn't begin by addressing those who have fallen into depravity. Instead, it starts with the words, “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else...” It speaks to those who judge the fallen, telling them that they are doing the very same things. The passage makes it clear that the most important thing is not having a standard for good and evil, but actually living according to that standard. This action, this doing, is so important that in verse 6, it says, “God will repay each person according to what they have done.”

So today, I want to talk about this very truth: God will repay each person according to their deeds.

1. Do Not Judge Others

First, we must not judge others. Even if we see people who are living in a state of spiritual depravity, we are not to pass judgment on them. God’s wrath will come upon them whether we judge them or not. Verse 2 says, "Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth." Therefore, we have no reason to judge them. It is God’s place to judge and to execute judgment.

The real problem that arises when we judge others is that, in doing so, we condemn ourselves. Let’s read verse 1 together: “You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.”

There is another problem with judging. The underlying assumption is that "I am not like that." By judging others, we develop a sense of superiority. If we knew we were doing the same things as them, would we still judge? The fact that we do pass judgment proves that we are blind to the sin in our own lives. Verse 3 asks, “So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on someone else for doing the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?”

Judging someone else’s sin may make it seem like we are different from them, but in reality, it just clouds our vision to our own sin. It makes us think we have escaped God’s judgment, when in fact, we have not. Before we judge others, we must abandon our stubbornness and have a heart of repentance. When we do this, as verse 4 says, God's kindness will lead us to repentance. God is a God of kindness, tolerance, and great patience. But if we continue to focus on the sins of others instead of our own, we will not repent, and we will only be storing up more of God's wrath. This is because God will repay each person according to their deeds.

2. God Does Not Show Favoritism

Second, God does not show favoritism. He does not play favorites. Why does the Apostle Paul make this point? At the time, the Roman church thought God did show favoritism. Who do you think they thought God favored? The Jews, of course.

Paul sets up a premise in verse 6, that God will repay each person according to what they have done. Then, from verses 7 to 10, he explains both the reward for those who do good and the wrath for those who do evil. But if you look closely at verses 9 and 10, he specifically adds, “first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” Does this mean that the Jews are first in line for a better deal with God? No. I believe it means that this message was most needed by the Jews, which is why he addressed them first.

This is made clear in verse 11, which summarizes this entire section. Let’s read it together: “For God does not show favoritism.” What does this mean? It means that it is not about being a Jew or a Gentile; it’s about what you do.

Verses 12-15 repeat the same message. The Jews had a great sense of pride in being God’s chosen people. God’s Law was given exclusively to them. But verses 12-15 say that having the Law is not what matters. Verse 12 says that those who sin without the Law (like the Gentiles) will perish, and those who sin with the Law (like the Jews) will be judged by the Law.

Now, let's read verse 13 together: “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” This must have been a huge shock to the Jews. And it's a huge shock to us, too. It is not those who simply hear the Law who are righteous. It is not those who hear the Word who are righteous. It is those who hear the Word and live it out. It is those who obey the Word who are righteous. How can we call someone a disciple if they claim to be a Christian with no action to back it up?

Verses 14-15 even say that when Gentiles, who do not have the Law, follow their own nature and conscience, they are showing that the requirements of the Law are written on their hearts. We sometimes see non-Christians living a life that seems more like a disciple, following their own morals and conscience. But be careful. This passage is not saying that we are saved by our actions instead of by Jesus. This is a message for those who claim to be God's chosen people—the Jews—and for those who have received salvation—the Christians—but have no actions to prove it. This is because God will repay each person according to their deeds.

Conclusion

To conclude, we started this week's morning devotionals by talking about the gospel. The good news of Jesus Christ is a revelation of God's righteousness. But this is not just about God’s salvation. Verse 16 says that the gospel will also “judge the secrets of men.” The gospel contains both God’s salvation and God’s judgment. And how does today’s passage summarize that? That God is the one who will repay each person according to their deeds.

God does not show favoritism. Therefore, instead of judging others, we must first look at ourselves and reflect on whether our actions are worthy of those who have been given the gospel.
