23:22 그러므로 오홀리바야 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 나는 네가 사랑하다가 싫어하던 자들을 충동하여 그들이 사방에서 와서 너를 치게 하리니

23:23 그들은 바벨론 사람과 갈대아 모든 무리 브곳과 소아와 고아 사람과 또 그와 함께 한 모든 앗수르 사람 곧 준수한 청년이며 다 고관과 감독이며 귀인과 유명한 자요 다 말 타는 자들이라

23:24 그들이 무기와 병거와 수레와 크고 작은 방패를 이끌고 투구 쓴 군대를 거느리고 치러 와서 너를 에워싸리라 내가 재판을 그들에게 맡긴즉 그들이 그들의 법대로 너를 재판하리라

23:25 내가 너를 향하여 질투하리니 그들이 분내어 네 코와 귀를 깎아 버리고 남은 자를 칼로 엎드러뜨리며 네 자녀를 빼앗고 그 남은 자를 불에 사르며

23:26 또 네 옷을 벗기며 네 장식품을 빼앗을지라

23:27 이와 같이 내가 네 음란과 애굽 땅에서부터 행음하던 것을 그치게 하여 너로 그들을 향하여 눈을 들지도 못하게 하며 다시는 애굽을 기억하지도 못하게 하리라

22 “Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stir up your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side— 23 the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, the men of Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, handsome young men, all of them governors and commanders, chariot officers and men of high rank, all mounted on horses. 24 They will come against you with weapons, chariots and wagons and with a throng of people; they will take up positions against you on every side with large and small shields and with helmets. I will turn you over to them for punishment, and they will punish you according to their standards. 25 I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire. 26 They will also strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry. 27 So I will put a stop to the lewdness and prostitution you began in Egypt. You will not look on these things with longing or remember Egypt anymore.

23:28 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 나는 네가 미워하는 자와 네 마음에 싫어하는 자의 손에 너를 붙이리니

23:29 그들이 미워하는 마음으로 네게 행하여 네 모든 수고한 것을 빼앗고 너를 벌거벗은 몸으로 두어서 네 음행의 벗은 몸 곧 네 음란하며 행음하던 것을 드러낼 것이라

23:30 네가 이같이 당할 것은 네가 음란하게 이방을 따르고 그 우상들로 더럽혔기 때문이로다

23:31 네가 네 형의 길로 행하였은즉 내가 그의 잔을 네 손에 주리라

28 “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to deliver you into the hands of those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust. 29 They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything you have worked for. They will leave you stark naked, and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your lewdness and promiscuity 30 have brought this on you, because you lusted after the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. 31 You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup into your hand.

23:32 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 깊고 크고 가득히 담긴 네 형의 잔을 네가 마시고 코웃음과 조롱을 당하리라

23:33 네가 네 형 사마리아의 잔 곧 놀람과 패망의 잔에 넘치게 취하고 근심할지라

23:34 네가 그 잔을 다 기울여 마시고 그 깨어진 조각을 씹으며 네 유방을 꼬집을 것은 내가 이렇게 말하였음이라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

32 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“You will drink your sister’s cup,

    a cup large and deep;

it will bring scorn and derision,

    for it holds so much.

33 You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow,

    the cup of ruin and desolation,

    the cup of your sister Samaria.

34 You will drink it and drain it dry

    and chew on its pieces—

    and you will tear your breasts.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.

23:35 그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 네가 나를 잊었고 또 나를 네 등 뒤에 버렸은즉 너는 네 음란과 네 음행의 죄를 담당할지니라 하시니라

35 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten me and turned your back on me, you must bear the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.”

저양촉번 羝羊觸藩

자신의 뿔만 믿고 앞으로 전진하는 것밖에 모르던 숫양이 울타리를 들이 받았다가 뿔이 걸려 앞으로 가지도 뒤로 나오지도 못하는 것을 일컫는 사자성어입니다. 자랑이었던 뿔이 오히려 걸거침이 되었습니다.

이솝우화에도 이런한 이야기가 나오죠. 사슴은 물을 먹으면서 물에 비친 자신의 뿔을 보고는 매우 자랑스러워했습니다. 반면에 얇고 긴 다리를 보고는 이내 실망했습니다. 그 때 사자가 나타나자 사슴은 쏜살같이 얇은 다리로 도망했습니다. 그런데 얼마 못 가서 자랑이었던 큰 뿔이 나무가지에 걸려 사자에게 잡아 먹히고 맙니다. 그때 사슴은 죽어 가면서 얇은 다리를 못 마땅해 했던 자신을 후회합니다.

너무 잘 알려진 이야기입니다. 성경에는 이와 거의 동일한 실제 이야기가 있습니다.

다윗의 아들인 압살롬은 잘 생기고 머리카락이 풍성했습니다. 고대 중동은 이것을 굉장한 자랑으로 여겼습니다. 얼마나 잘 생기고, 머리카락이 많았는지 사무엘서 저자는 다음과 같이 기록했습니다.

온 이스라엘 가운데에서 압살롬 같이 아름다움으로 크게 칭찬 받는 자가 없었으니

그는 발바닥부터 정수리까지 흠이 없음이라 그의 머리털이 무거우므로 연말마다 깎았으며

그의 머리 털을 깎을 때에 그것을 달아본즉 그의 머리털이 왕의 저울로 이백 세겔이었더라

(삼하 14:25~26)

이백 세겔은 약 2.3kg이라고 합니다. 보통 일반인들이 일년에 자라나는 머리카락의 양이 500g 이라고 하니, 이는 어마어마한 양이 아닐 수 없습니다. 하지만 압살롬은 아버지에게 반역하였다가 실패하고 도망하던 중에 이 자랑이었던 머리카락이 나무에 걸려 대롱대롱 매달린 채로 최후를 맞이합니다.

자신이 믿거나 자랑했던 것의 배신입니다. 믿는 도끼에 발등 찍히는 경우입니다.

The Ram Trapped by Its Horns

This old idiom describes a ram that charges forward with full confidence in its horns, only to get them caught in a fence — stuck, unable to move forward or back. What once was its pride became its downfall.

Aesop’s fables tell a similar story. A deer, drinking water, saw its reflection and admired its antlers with pride, but despised its thin, spindly legs. Suddenly, a lion appeared, and the deer sprinted away with incredible speed — thanks to those very legs it had looked down upon. But before long, its antlers, the source of its pride, became entangled in tree branches, and the lion caught and devoured it. Dying, the deer regretted ever despising its legs.

We all know the lesson well. And the Bible gives us a nearly identical real-life example.

Absalom, son of David, was renowned for his handsome appearance and thick hair. In the ancient Middle East, such beauty and a full head of hair were considered great pride. Scripture records it this way:

Two hundred shekels — about 2.3 kilograms! An ordinary person’s hair in a year weighs less than a quarter of that. Absalom’s pride was legendary. And yet, while fleeing from his rebellion against his father, that very hair became his snare. It caught in the branches of a tree, leaving him hanging helplessly until his enemies killed him.

What he trusted in betrayed him. His pride became his downfall. 

심판의 주권자 하나님 (22~27절)

예루살렘도 마찬가지입니다. 그렇게 사모하고 믿고 의지했던 앗수르와 바벨론의 준수한 청년들, 고관들과 감독과 귀인과 유명한 말 탄자들에 의해 예루살렘은 멸망할 것입니다(23). 그들은 온갖 무기를 가지고 와서 예루살렘을 공격할 것입니다. 또한 그들은 그들의 법대로 이스라엘을 재판할 것입니다(24).

하지만 이 모든 것의 뒤에는 하나님의 손길이 있습니다. 심판의 주권자는 여호와 하나님이십니다. 이를 드러내는 구절을 대략적으로 살펴보면, 너를 치게 하리라(22), 내가 재판을 그들에게 맡긴즉(24), 내가 너를 향하여 질투하리니… 행음하던 것을 그치게 하여… 기억하지 못하게 하리라(27), 너를 붙이리니(28), 내가 그의 잔을 네 손에 주리라(31) 등입니다.

우리는 기억해야 합니다. 모든 일에 주권자는 여호와 하나님이라는 사실을 말입니다. 그러므로 주님 앞에 나와 우리의 크고 작은 모든 일을 아뢰고 기도해야 합니다. 이런 사소한 것까지? 라는 의문이 드는 것도 기도해야 합니다. 그런 영적인 좋은 습관이 쌓이면, 나도 모르게 매순간 하나님의 뜻을 인식하고 그분의 인도하심을 받을 수 있습니다.

한편 하나님은 오홀리바, 곧 예루살렘에 임할 심판의 재앙을 열거합니다.

바벨론 군대는 이스라엘 사람들의 코과 귀를 잘라 버릴 것입니다. 이것은 중동지역에서 음부들에게 내리는 형벌이라고 합니다. 실제로 2010년 타임지에 코와 귀가 잘린 아프가니스탄 18세 여성의 사진이 게재되었습니다. 그녀는 탈레반 소속의 남편이 하도 구타하여 도망하였다가 붙잡힌 후, 시동생이 그녀를 붙잡고 남편이 직접 그녀의 코와 귀를 잘라내고 죽도록 버려둔 것을 미군이 발견하여 극적으로 구조 되었던 것입니다.

물론 그녀는 음행의 죄가 없었지만, 예루살렘은 분명히 하나님 앞에서 음행을 저질렀고, 그에 합당한 심판을 받게 된 것입니다. 그뿐아니라 그들이 그토록 사모했던 아름다운 옷이 벗김 당하는 수치를 당할 거입니다. 이 모든 것의 배후에는 하나님이 계십니다. 우리는 알아야 합니다. 만일 우리가 우리 스스로 죄악을 멈추지 않으면, 반드시 하나님이 멈추게 하실 것입니다. 그러면 괴롭고, 고통스러울 뿐 아니라 수치스럽기까지 합니다. 그 전에 우리는 우리의 죄를 멈추고 회개해야 합니다.

God the Sovereign Judge (Ezekiel 23:22–27)

Jerusalem was no different. The very things she longed for and trusted in — the noble young men of Assyria and Babylon, the officials, rulers, and horsemen she admired — would become the source of her destruction (v.23). Armed to the teeth, they would attack Jerusalem. They would judge her according to their laws (v.24).

But behind it all was the hand of God. The sovereign Judge is the LORD Himself. Scripture makes this plain:

• “I will direct them against you” (v.22),

• “I will hand you over for judgment” (v.24),

• “I will turn my jealousy against you … and you shall cease your harlotry and never again remember it” (v.27),

• “I will deliver you into their hands” (v.28),

• “I will put her cup into your hand” (v.31).

We must never forget: in all things, God is sovereign. That is why we bring even the smallest matters before Him in prayer. Even this? Yes — even that. As these small habits of prayer accumulate, we find ourselves instinctively aware of God’s will, living under His guidance moment by moment.

Meanwhile, God declared the judgment awaiting Oholibah — that is, Jerusalem. The Babylonians would mutilate, stripping away dignity and honor. In ancient times, cutting off the nose and ears was the penalty for prostitutes. This was not hypothetical; even in modern history, such punishments have been carried out, as seen in Afghanistan in recent decades.

Though that woman was innocent, Jerusalem was not. She had committed spiritual adultery against the LORD and would bear the full shame of her sin. Even the beautiful garments she treasured would be stripped away. Make no mistake — behind it all was God’s hand.

If we do not stop our sin ourselves, God will stop it for us — and when He does, it will be painful, humiliating, and shameful. Better that we repent now, than to be forced into shame later.

하나님을 버리면 자랑이 수치로 바뀝니다 (28~35절)

이제 예루살렘의 자랑이 수치로 바뀔 것입니다. 그들이 수고하여 하나님꼐로부터 얻은 것을 빼앗길 것이고, 벌거벗음의 수치를 당할 것입니다. 그리고 하나님은 그것을 그대로 두어 음행하던 몸을 그대로 드러낼 것입니다(29).

또한 형 오홀라의 길을 그대로 따랐기에, 그가 마셨던 잔도 마셔야 합니다(31). 그 잔은 사람들에게 당하는 코웃음과 조롱의 잔입니다(32). 패망의 잔이 넘칠 것입니다(33). 그 잔을 마시되 그 잔의 깨어진 조각까지 마시게 될 것입니다. 철저하고도 완전하게 하나님의 진노의 잔을 마실 것이라는 의미입니다. 가슴을 쥐어 뜯을 정도로 슬퍼하고 후회해도 소용이 없습니다. 이미 하나님의 진노의 잔은 쏟아졌기 때문입니다(34).

하나님은 에스겔 선지자를 통해서 이 모든 일의 원인을 다음과 같이 말씀하십니다.

네가 나를 잊었고 또 나를 네 등 뒤에 버렸은즉 너는 네 음란과 네 음행의 죄를 담당할지니라 (35b)

모든 심판의 원인이 너무 확실합니다. 하나님을 잊어 버리고, 하나님을 등 뒤에 버렸습니다. 이것은 하나님의 말씀을 듣지도, 읽지도, 암송하지도 않음으로 하나님을 잊어버리는 것과 동시에 삶의 우선순위에서 하나님이 밀려나 저 뒤로 가 있는 상태를 말합니다.

두려운 것은 이스라엘은 한번도 하나님을 떠난 적이 없습니다. 적어도 형식적으로 말입니다. 여전히 제사제도와 제사장과 율법과 성막이 있었습니다. 문제는 알맹이가 없는 것입니다. 하나님을 섬기면서 동시에 바알과 아세라와 몰렉과 온갖 잡동사니들을 다 섬기는 것입니다.

우리들의 삶과 별반 다르지 않습니다. 하나님을 섬기지만 동시에 세상 이것저것에 관심이 많습니다. 때론 우선순위에서 기타의 것들이 하나님을 앞 지를 때가 종종 있습니다. 정신을 바짝 차리지 않으면, 어느샌가 하나님이 나의 등 뒤 저 멀리 물러나 계십니다.

사마리아와 예루살렘이 이미 걸어간 길을 다시 확인하며 따라갈 필요가 없습니다. 우리는 그들의 길을 잊고, 우상들을 뒤로해야 합니다. 우리에게 주신 자랑거리들, 곧 건강과 지식과 육체와 물질과 가정과 자녀와 기타 모든 축복이 축복 되기 위해서는 우리는 계속하여 하나님만 바라보아야 합니다. 만일 하나님을 잊어버리면 우리 역시 수치를 당할 것입니다. 명심합시다!

When Pride Becomes Shame (Ezekiel 23:28–35)

Jerusalem’s pride would turn into shame. The very blessings she had received from God would be stripped away. She would be left naked and exposed (v.29).

Because she followed in the steps of her sister, Samaria, she too would drink the same cup of judgment (v.31). It is the cup of ridicule and scorn (v.32), the cup of ruin and devastation (v.33). And she would drink it to the very dregs, even swallowing the broken shards (v.34) — a picture of complete and devastating judgment.

God revealed the reason plainly:

The cause could not be clearer. They had forgotten God and pushed Him out of sight. In practice, this meant they no longer listened to His Word, read it, memorized it, or kept Him first in their lives.

What is sobering is this: Israel had never abandoned God outwardly. They still had the temple, the priests, the sacrifices, and the Law. But it was empty religion. They worshiped God and Baal, Asherah, Molech, and countless idols.

Is it so different for us? We worship God, yes — but our hearts are often divided with other interests. At times, lesser things creep ahead of God in our priorities. And without vigilance, God can quietly slip behind us, far in the background of our lives.

We do not need to repeat the path of Samaria and Jerusalem. Instead, let us turn from idols and cling to God alone. The blessings He has given us — health, knowledge, strength, wealth, family, children, and every good gift — remain blessings only as we fix our eyes on Him. But if we forget Him, those very blessings can turn into shame.

Let us take heed:If we abandon God, our pride will turn to shame. Let us remember this!
