20250715 [새벽묵상] 교회 안의 리더십에 대한 존중과 책임 | Respect and Responsibility in Church Leadership (딤전/1Tim 5:17~25)

17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. 20 But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. 21 I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.

22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

Do you remember yesterday's message? It was about treating the older members of the church like your fathers and mothers, and the younger ones like your brothers and sisters. The point was to regard the saints in the church as if they were your own family. We were also reminded not to forget the instruction to care for widows in the church as if they were our own relatives. The church is truly like a new family.

Every family typically has a head, people who lead it. In a typical home, the father often takes on that role, but who should take on that role in the church? Today's message is about leadership within the church. What constitutes good leadership? How should leadership be respected? What should happen if a leader commits a sin? And how should leaders be appointed? That's what we'll explore today. We want to share a message titled, "Respect and Responsibility in Church Leadership."

Good Leadership Deserves Respect

First, good leadership in the church deserves respect. What kind of leadership is considered good in the church?

Let's read verse 17 together: "Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching."

The answer is clear, isn't it? Those who rule well and who labor in preaching and teaching – this is what today's scripture calls good leadership.

The phrase "rule well" refers to carefully overseeing and guiding the church, much like managing a household, as we saw in 1 Timothy 3:4-5. And when it speaks of "those who labor in preaching and teaching," this "labor" signifies diligent, hard work. Therefore, good leaders who diligently care for the church and work tirelessly in the Word certainly deserve respect.

So, how should we respect them? The phrase "be considered worthy of double honor" doesn't necessarily mean to honor them twice as much. Rather, it means that they should be seen as deserving not only of spiritual respect but also material support. That's why verse 18 cites Deuteronomy 25:4, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain," and Luke 10:7, "The laborer is worthy of his wages," both Jesus' words, to emphasize that fair compensation for their labor must be provided. In this way, good leadership within the church should be honored both spiritually and materially.

But what happens if a leader commits an offense? How should the judgment process and discipline unfold?

Leaders' Wrongdoings Must Be Judged Carefully, and Their Accountability is Heavy

Second, the wrongdoings of leaders must be judged carefully, and their accountability is heavy. Let's read verse 19 together: "Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses."

This follows the principle found in Deuteronomy 19:15. It cautions against criticizing or accusing leadership without clear evidence. Due to the nature of leadership, they are often in the public eye and can easily become targets of criticism. That's why their actions must be judged with even greater caution. However, if they are "sinning," as verse 20 states, the story changes slightly.

The phrase "those who are sinning" in verse 20 refers to those who are persistently living in sin. It uses a present continuous tense, indicating leadership that continually commits sin. Today's passage says to rebuke these individuals publicly before everyone. This is done to instill a fear of sinning in the rest of the people. While a leader's wrongdoing should be judged cautiously, once their guilt is confirmed, they must bear heavy responsibility.

We must remember that the court they face is not just a court within the church. As verse 21 states, it's a matter that takes place before a heavenly court, composed of God, Christ Jesus, and the elect angels. Paul strictly commands Timothy to judge without prejudice and with impartiality as an agent of this heavenly court. That's how carefully a leader's wrongdoing must be judged, and when that wrongdoing is revealed, their responsibility is indeed heavy. This is precisely why leaders should not be appointed carelessly or hastily.

Leadership Must Be Appointed Cautiously

Third, leadership must be appointed cautiously. Let's read verse 22 together: "Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure."

Looking at the New American Standard Bible or NIV, this verse seems to convey three distinct commands: do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, do not take part in the sins of others, and keep yourself pure. However, looking at other translations, we can see that these three are all interconnected. "Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands" means that if you hastily appoint leadership without sufficient vetting, you could appoint an unqualified person. And if that person causes problems, the one who appointed them cannot escape shared responsibility. In other words, you become involved in the sins of others, or get entangled in them. To prevent such blame from arising due to hasty appointments, you must keep your own thoughts and judgment pure.

Why is this important? We have a saying: "You can know the depths of the water, but not the depths of a person's heart." A person's true character may not be immediately apparent. That's exactly what verses 24 and 25 tell us. Some people's sins and good deeds are immediately evident, while others' sins and good deeds only become apparent over time. That's precisely why, as in 1 Timothy 3:10, the Bible instructs us to "test them first" before entrusting them with a position. If this is true for appointing deacons, how much more caution should be exercised when laying hands on and appointing church leadership!

Conclusion

To conclude, today we've discussed leadership in the church. Like any community, leadership is crucial in the church. Therefore, good leadership should rightfully be honored, and if leadership commits a sin, their heavy responsibility should be addressed cautiously but fairly. Because leadership is so vital, the decision to appoint leaders must be made with great deliberation.

Please honor your leaders. Watch over them so they don't stumble. And please pray for your leaders. When you, as a family, pray for your leaders, I believe our Hansarang Church will become healthier and stand strong.
