76:1 하나님은 유다에 알려지셨으며 그의 이름이 이스라엘에 알려지셨도다

76:2 그의 장막은 살렘에 있음이여 그의 처소는 시온에 있도다

76:3 거기에서 그가 화살과 방패와 칼과 전쟁을 없이하셨도다 (셀라)

1 God is renowned in Judah;

    in Israel his name is great.

2 His tent is in Salem,

    his dwelling place in Zion.

3 There he broke the flashing arrows,

    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.

76:4 주는 약탈한 산에서 영화로우시며 존귀하시도다

76:5 마음이 강한 자도 가진 것을 빼앗기고 잠에 빠질 것이며 장사들도 모두 그들에게 도움을 줄 손을 만날 수 없도다

6:6 야곱의 하나님이여 주께서 꾸짖으시매 병거와 말이 다 깊이 잠들었나이다

4 You are radiant with light,

    more majestic than mountains rich with game.

5 The valiant lie plundered,

    they sleep their last sleep;

not one of the warriors

    can lift his hands.

6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob,

    both horse and chariot lie still.

76:7 주께서는 경외 받을 이시니 주께서 한 번 노하실 때에 누가 주의 목전에 서리이까

76:8 주께서 하늘에서 판결을 선포하시매 땅이 두려워 잠잠하였나니

76:9 곧 하나님이 땅의 모든 온유한 자를 구원하시려고 심판하러 일어나신 때에로다 (셀라)

76:10 진실로 사람의 노여움은 주를 찬송하게 될 것이요 그 남은 노여움은 주께서 금하시리이다

7 It is you alone who are to be feared.

    Who can stand before you when you are angry?

8 From heaven you pronounced judgment,

    and the land feared and was quiet—

9 when you, God, rose up to judge,

    to save all the afflicted of the land.

10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,

    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.

76:11 너희는 여호와 너희 하나님께서 서원하고 갚으라 사방에 있는 모든 사람도 마땅히 경외할 이에게 예물을 드릴지로다

76:12 그가 고관들의 시를 꺾으시리니 그는 세상의 왕들에게 두려움이시로다

11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;

    let all the neighboring lands

    bring gifts to the One to be feared.

12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;

    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

            여러분 혹시 개틀링 건이라고 불리는 기관총이 어떻게 발명되었는지 아십니까? 대한민국 국방홍보원에 따르면 무서운 화력을 자랑하는 기관총은 원래 인명을 구하기 위해 만들어졌다고 합니다. 그게 말이 되나? 기관총으로 인명을 구한다고? 한 번 들어보십시오. 리처드 조던 개틀링 박사는 원래 의사였지만 의술 대신에 공학에 삶을 바쳤던 사람이라고 합니다. 1861년 미국에서 남북 전쟁이 시작되었을 때, 개틀링은 자신의 고향 인디애나에서 무수한 사상자들을 보고 큰 충격에 빠졌었다고 해요. 그래서 전쟁에 나가는 병사의 숫자를 줄일 수 있도록 한 사람이 백명의 몫을 할 수 있는 새로운 총을 만들었고 그 총에 자신의 이름을 따서 개틀링 기관총이라고 이름을 지은 것이지요. 하지만 이 기관총은 문제가 많아서 맥심이라는 사람이 새로운 기관총을 만들었다고 합니다. 맥심은 이 기관총의 가공할만한 화력이 적대국들을 충분히 겁에 질리게 하여 분쟁을 억제할 수 있다고 믿었던 것 같습니다. 하지만 의도와는 다르게 기관총은 전쟁무기로서 너무 효과적이었지요. 하지만 그의 아이디어, 즉 강력한 화력으로 상대가 대적하지 못하게 한다는 것은 틀린 것이 아니었습니다. 실제로 전 인류를 멸망시킬 만한 강력한 화력, 즉 핵폭탄이 등장하고 나서부터 인류는 냉전 시대와 같이 국가간의 분쟁들을 전면전이 아닌 다른 방법으로 풀어나가고 있기 때문입니다. 오늘 말씀은 이와 같이 너무나 강력한 용사 앞에 그 누구도 대적할 수 없는 장면을 그리고 있습니다. 그리고 그 강한 용사는 바로 하나님이십니다. 그는 강한 용사이시지만 그는 자기 백성을 지키시는 때에 일어나십니다. 오늘은 자기 백성을 지키는 강한 용사 여호와라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

Good morning, everyone. Have you ever heard how the machine gun, often called the Gatling gun, was invented? According to the Korea National Defense Public Relations Agency, this fearsome weapon was originally created to save lives. Does that make sense? A machine gun saving lives? Let me tell you. Richard Jordan Gatling, a doctor by profession, dedicated his life to engineering instead of medicine. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Gatling was deeply shocked by the countless casualties he witnessed in his home state of Indiana. So, to reduce the number of soldiers sent to war, he created a new gun that could do the work of a hundred men, and he named it the Gatling machine gun after himself. However, this machine gun had many problems, leading Hiram Maxim to invent a new one. Maxim seemed to believe that the machine gun's terrifying firepower would sufficiently intimidate enemy nations, thus deterring conflicts. But contrary to his intention, the machine gun proved to be incredibly effective as a weapon of war.

However, his core idea—that overwhelming firepower could prevent an opponent from resisting—wasn't entirely wrong. Indeed, ever since the emergence of nuclear bombs, which possess enough destructive power to wipe out all humanity, mankind has been resolving international disputes through means other than all-out warfare, as seen during the Cold War. Today's passage depicts a scene where no one can stand against such an incredibly powerful warrior. And that mighty warrior is none other than God Himself. He is a mighty warrior, but He rises up to protect His people. Today, I want to deliver a message titled, "The Mighty Warrior Yahweh Who Protects His People."

            첫번째, 하나님께서는 자기 백성을 지키시는 분입니다. 1절은 하나님의 이름이 온 이스라엘에 널리 알려졌다고 합니다. 왜 입니까? 3절을 같이 읽어보겠습니다. “거기에서 그가 화살과 방패와 칼과 전쟁을 없이 하셨도다.” 여기서 없이 하셨도다라는 말은 부숴버렸다는 말입니다. 하나님께서 자기 백성을 보호하시려고 대적의 화살과 방패와 칼과 전쟁을 모두 부숴버리셨습니다. 이 일이 어디에서 일어난 일입니까? 2절 말씀을 보니 하나님의 장막이 있는 예루살렘, 하나님의 처소가 있는 시온성에서 일어난 일이라고 합니다. 예루살렘과 시온성 모두 하나님의 성전을 가르키는 말입니다. 그런데 하나님의 성전을 시인은 ‘처소’라는 말로 표현합니다. 이 표현은 보통 짐승의 거처를 가리킬 때 사용됩니다. 즉 , 천적으로부터 자기와 자기 새끼를 보호하기 위해 마련한 장소, 그 어느 곳보다 안전한 장소를 가리키는 것입니다. 유다의 사자인 하나님께서 자기 백성을 마치 자기 새끼와 같이 보호하시는 모습을 표현하는 것이지요. 그래서 주변의 대적으로부터 하나님이 당신의 백성을 안전하게 지키시는 모습을 노래하고 있는 것입니다. 이는 9절에서도 잘 나와있습니다. 이제 곧 설명하게 될 강한 용사이신 하나님이 드러나는 4절부터 9절까지의 말씀가운데 그 하나님이 용사가 되시는 이유를 설명하는 것이 바로 9절입니다. 하나님이 왜 일어나신다고 하십니까? 9절 함께 한 번 읽어보겠습니다. “곧 하나님이 땅의 모든 온유한 자를 구원하시려고 심판하러 일어나신 때에로다.” 땅의 모든 온유한자를 구원하시려고. 즉, 자기 백성을 구원하시려고 그의 대적을 심판하시는 하나님. 하나님께서는 자기 백성을 지키시는 분이신 것입니다.

First, God is the One who protects His people.

Verse 1 tells us that God's name is widely known throughout Israel. Why is that? Let's read verse 3 together: "There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war." The phrase "broke" here means to shatter. God shattered all the arrows, shields, swords, and weapons of war of the enemy to protect His people. Where did this happen? Verse 2 says it happened in Jerusalem, where God's tabernacle is, and in Zion, where His dwelling is. Both Jerusalem and Zion refer to God's temple. But the psalmist describes God's temple using the word "dwelling," which is often used to refer to an animal's lair or den. This implies a place of ultimate safety, a secure refuge prepared by an animal to protect itself and its young from predators. It's a portrayal of God, the Lion of Judah, protecting His people like His own cubs. Therefore, the psalm sings of God keeping His people safe from surrounding enemies. This is also clearly stated in verse 9. In verses 4 through 9, which describe God as a mighty warrior, verse 9 explains why God becomes a warrior. Why does God rise up? Let's read verse 9 together:

"When you arose to judge, O God, to save all the afflicted of the land." (NIV)

To save all the afflicted of the land. That is, God judges His enemies to save His people. God is indeed the One who protects His people.

            두번째, 하나님은 강한 용사되십니다. 방금 말씀 드렸던것처럼 4-9절은 하나님이 당신의 대적에게 얼마나 두려운 대상이 되시는지를 보여줍니다. 4절, 하나님께서 약탈한 산에서 영광스럽게 빛난다고 하십니다. 약탈이란 무엇입니까? 전쟁에서 승리한 전리품입니다. 하나님께서 대적에게서 약탈한 전리품들이 산을 이루고 있습니다. 하나님의 승리의 영광이 눈부시게 빛나고 있는 것입니다. 7절처럼 하나님께서 분노하실 때 누가 하나님 앞에 설 수 있겠습니까? 5절에서 마음이 강한자도 가진 것을 빼앗기며 기절할 것이고 장사들도 손을 쓸 수 없습니다. 6절에서 병거와 말도 깊이 잠들다 즉, 마치 죽은 것 처럼 쓰러질 것입니다. 8절을 보니 하나님께서 하늘에서 판결을 선포하시면 온 땅이 두려워 잠잠하였다고 합니다. 제가 도입 부분에서 말씀드렸던 것처럼 너무나 강력한 힘 앞에 그 누구도 감히 대적할 수 없는 것입니다. 오죽하면 10절에서 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “진실로 사람의 노여움은 주를 찬송하게 될 것이요” 쉽게 이해가 되질 않습니다 그렇지요? 이것은 대적들이 아무리 하나님께 분노할지라도 하나님의 그 강력한 힘 앞에서는 모두 어쩔 수 없이 꼬리를 내리고 하나님께 항복할 수 밖에는 없는 것입니다. 여러분 우리 국사시간에 배우지 않았습니까? 병자호란에서 우리가 얼마나 큰 치욕을 당했습니까? 오랑캐라고 멸시하던 만주족과 군신관계를 맺어 임금으로 모시기로 맹세까지 해야했었습니다. 그러고 나서 무엇을 해야 했습니까? 조공을 바쳐야 했지요. 마찬가지입니다. 11절, “사방에 있는 모든 사람도 마땅히 경외할 이에게 예물을 드릴지로다.” 이것이 무엇입니까? 하나님께 조공을 바치는 것입니다. 12절 말씀처럼, 강한 용사되시는 하나님은 세상의 왕들에게 두려움이신 것입니다.

Second, God is a Mighty Warrior.

As I just mentioned, verses 4-9 show how terrifying God is to His enemies. Verse 4 says God shines gloriously from the mountains of plunder. What is plunder? It's the spoils of victory in war. Mountains of spoils taken by God from His enemies. God's victorious glory shines brilliantly. As in verse 7, who can stand before God when He is angry? In verse 5, those whose hearts are strong will be stripped of what they have and fall into a stupor, and the mighty warriors will be unable to lift a hand. In verse 6, chariots and horses will fall into a deep sleep, meaning they will lie lifeless, as if dead. Verse 8 says that when God pronounced judgment from heaven, the earth was afraid and fell silent. As I said in the introduction, in the face of such overwhelming power, no one dares to resist. Verse 10 even states: "Surely the wrath of humans praises you." This is not easy to understand, is it? It means that no matter how angry the enemies may be at God, in the face of His immense power, they have no choice but to back down and surrender to God. Don't we learn this in our history lessons? How much humiliation did we suffer during the Qing invasion? We, who despised the Manchus as barbarians, had to establish a lord-vassal relationship and swear allegiance to them as our sovereign. And after that, what did we have to do? We had to pay tribute. It's the same here.

Verse 11, "Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared." (NIV) What is this? It's paying tribute to God. As verse 12 says, the mighty warrior God is a terror to the kings of the earth.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님은 강한 용사되십니다. 하나님의 모든 대적들은 그 강력한 힘 앞에 두려워 잠잠 할 수 밖에 없습니다. 하나님께서 하늘에서 판결을 선포하시고 심판하시려 일어나시면 하나님께 분노하였던 대적이라 할지라도 그 입을 막고 하나님을 찬양할 수 밖에 없습니다. 그러나 대적에게 심판하시는 그 심판이 바로 당신의 백성을 구원하시는 것임을 우리는 보았습니다. 마치 짐승이 자기 새끼를 지키고 보호하는 것 처럼 하나님께서는 당신의 백성을 지키고 보호하십니다. 모든 대적이 두려워 떠는 강한 용사 여호와께서 바로 우리의 하나님이신 것입니다. 오늘도 우리를 지키시는 강한 용사 여호와를 의지하여 강건함으로 하루를 시작하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

Conclusion

To conclude, God is a mighty warrior. All of God's enemies are forced to tremble and fall silent before His immense power. When God pronounces judgment from heaven and rises to judge, even enemies who were angry with God have no choice but to silence their mouths and praise Him. Yet, we have seen that the judgment He brings upon His enemies is precisely the salvation of His people. Just as an animal protects and guards its young, God protects and guards His people. The mighty warrior Yahweh, before whom all enemies tremble, is our God. May you all begin your day with strength, relying on Yahweh, the mighty warrior who protects us today.
