26:1 염병 후에 여호와께서 모세와 제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살에게 말씀하여 이르시되

26:2 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중의 총수를 그들의 조상의 가문을 따라 조사하되 이스라엘 중에 이십 세 이상으로 능히 전쟁에 나갈 만한 모든 자를 계수하라 하시니

26:3 모세와 제사장 엘르아살이 여리고 맞은편 요단 가 모압 평지에서 그들에게 전하여 이르되

26:4 여호와께서 애굽 땅에서 나온 모세와 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하신 대로 너희는 이십 세 이상 된 자를 계수하라 하니라

1 After the plague the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel.” 3 So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, 4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

5 The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel, were:

through Pallu, the Palluite clan;

6 through Hezron, the Hezronite clan;

through Karmi, the Karmite clan.

7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

26:8 발루의 아들은 엘리압이요

26:9 엘리압의 아들은 느무엘과 다단과 아비람이라 이 다단과 아비람은 회중 가운데서 부름을 받은 자들이니 고라의 무리에 들어가서 모세와 아론을 거슬러 여호와께 반역할 때에

26:10 땅이 그 입을 벌려서 그 무리와 고라를 삼키매 그들이 죽었고 당시에 불이 이백오십 명을 삼켜 징표가 되게 하였으나

26:11 고라의 아들들은 죽지 아니하였더라

8 The son of Pallu was Eliab, 9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord. 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign. 11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.

28 The descendants of Joseph by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim were:

26:29 므낫세의 자손 중 마길에게서 난 자손은 마길 종족이라 마길이 길르앗을 낳았고 길르앗에게서 난 자손은 길르앗 종족이라

26:30 길르앗 자손은 이러하니 이에셀에게서 난 이에셀 종족과 헬렉에게서 난 헬렉 종족과

through Makir, the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead);

through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.

30 These were the descendants of Gilead:

through Iezer, the Iezerite clan;

through Helek, the Helekite clan;

31 through Asriel, the Asrielite clan;

through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;

32 through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan;

through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.

33 (Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons; he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.)

26:35 에브라임 자손의 종족들은 이러 하니 수델라에게서 난 수델라 종족과 베겔에게서 난 베겔 종족과 다한에게서 난 다한 종족이며

26:38 베냐민 자손의 종족들은 이러하니 벨라에게서 난 벨라 종족과 아스벨에게서 난 아스벨 종족과 아히람에게서 난 아히람 종족과

26:39 스부밤에게서 난 스부밤 종족과 후밤에게서 난 후밤 종족이며

26:40 벨라의 아들들은 아릇과 나아만 이라 아릇에게서 아릇 종족과 나아만에게서 나아만 종족이 났으니

26:41 이는 그들의 종족을 따른 베냐민 자손이라 계수된 자가 사만 오천육백 명이었더라

38 The descendants of Benjamin by their clans were:

through Bela, the Belaite clan;

through Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan;

through Ahiram, the Ahiramite clan;

39 through Shupham, the Shuphamite clan;

through Hupham, the Huphamite clan.

40 The descendants of Bela through Ard and Naaman were:

through Ard, the Ardite clan;

through Naaman, the Naamite clan.

41 These were the clans of Benjamin; those numbered were 45,600.

26:42 단 자손의 종족들은 이러하니라 수함에게서 수함 종족이 났으니 이는 그들의 종족을 따른 단 종족들이라

26:43 수함 모든 종족의 계수된 자가 육만 사천사백 명이었더라

42 These were the descendants of Dan by their clans:

through Shuham, the Shuhamite clan.

These were the clans of Dan: 43 All of them were Shuhamite clans; and those numbered were 64,400.

26:44 아셀 자손의 종족들은 이러하니 임나에게서 난 임나 종족과 이스위에게서 난 이스위 종족과 브리아에게서 난 브리아 종족이며

26:45 브리아의 자손 중 헤벨에게서 난 헤벨 종족과 말기엘에게서 난 말기엘 종족이며

26:46 아셀의 딸의 이름은 세라라

26:47 이는 아셀 자손의 종족들이니 계수된 자가 오만 삼천사백 명이었더라

44 The descendants of Asher by their clans were:

through Imnah, the Imnite clan;

through Ishvi, the Ishvite clan;

through Beriah, the Beriite clan;

45 and through the descendants of Beriah:

through Heber, the Heberite clan;

through Malkiel, the Malkielite clan.

46 (Asher had a daughter named Serah.)

47 These were the clans of Asher; those numbered were 53,400.

26:48 납달리 자손은 그들의 종족대로 이러하니 야셀에게서 난 야셀 종족과 구니에게서 난 구니 종족과

26:49 예셀에게서 난 예셀 종족과 실렘에게서 난 실렘 종족이라

26:50 이는 그들의 종족을 따른 납달리 종족들이니 계수된 자가 사만 오천사백 명이었더라

through Shillem, the Shillemite clan.

50 These were the clans of Naphtali; those numbered were 45,400.

26:51 이스라엘 자손의 계수된 자가 육십만 천칠백삼십 명이었더라

51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.

            오늘은 본문 말씀이 길어서 설교는 좀 짧게 하겠습니다. 바로 본론으로 들어가겠습니다. 오늘 본문 말씀의 내용이 무엇입니까? 인구조사입니다. 새벽기도에 꾸준히 나오신 여러분은 이것이 두번째 인구조사임을 아실 것입니다. 그렇다면 우리는 자연스럽게 첫번째 인구조사와 두번째 인구조사에 무슨 차이가 있는지 비교를 하게 됩니다. 그런데 오늘 본문 말씀을 보셔서 아시겠지만 비교가 쉽지가 않지요. 첫번째 인구조사 언제였는지 잘 기억도 나지 않지요. 벌써 두 달 전 일이니까요. 막대 그래프나 도표같은 것이 있으면 비교하기가 좀 쉬울텐데요, 그렇죠? 그래서 오늘은 제가 첫번째 인구조사와의 차이를 설명하면서 이 두번째 인구조사를 통해서 드러나는 하나님의 신실하심에 대해 말씀을 나누도록 하겠습니다.

Alright, let's dive into this morning's message. Now, our passage today is a little lengthy, so I'm going to keep the sermon a bit shorter. Let's get right to the heart of it. What's the main topic of our scripture this morning? It's a census, a counting of the people.

Now, those of you who have been faithful in your early morning prayers know that this is the second time a census has been taken. And that naturally leads us to wonder, what's the difference between this first census and the second one? But as we look at today's verses, it's not immediately clear, is it? It's probably been a couple of months since we even thought about that first counting. It would be helpful to have a bar graph or a chart to compare them, wouldn't it?

So, this morning, I want to walk us through the differences between this second census and the first, and in doing so, highlight the faithfulness of God that is revealed through this second counting.

             자 먼저, 두번째 인구조사는 출애굽세대가 아닌 광야세대, 즉 제 2세대의 인구조사입니다. 오늘 말씀 1절을 함께 보시겠습니다. “염병 후에 여호와께서 모세와 아론의 아들 엘르아살에게 말씀하여 이르시되.” 이제는 더 이상 모세와 아론에게 이르시되 라는 말씀이 없지요. 1세대의 대표격인 대제사장 아론이 세상을 떠나고  2세대의 대표인 아론의 아들, 엘르아살에게 말씀하십니다. 내일 좀 더 자세하게 말씀 드리겠지만 두번째 인구조사에는 갈렙과 여호수아를 제외하면 1세대는 단 한 사람도 남아있지 않습니다. 하나님께 반역한 1세대는 약속한 땅에 들어가지 못한다던 하나님의 말씀이 그대로 이루어졌지요. 그렇다면 제 2세대는 1세대와는 완전하게 다른 승리의 세대일까요? 정답은 그렇지 않다 입니다. 신명기 2:14을 보면 1세대는 이미 이들이 모압땅으로 들어가기도 전에 모두 죽었음을 알려주고 있습니다. 그 말은 즉, 어제 여러분이 묵상하신 내용이 1세대가 아닌 제 2세대에서 일어난 일이라는 것입니다. 어제 브올에서 그들이 무엇을 하였습니까? 모압여자들과 음행하여 24,000명이나 염병으로 죽지 않았습니까? 2세대도 1세대와 마찬가지인 것입니다. 그들도 하나님께 범죄하는 1세대와 다를바가 없었습니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님께서는 이들을 약속의 땅 가나안으로 이끄십니다. 바로 여기에 하나님의 은혜가 있습니다. 이들은 자격없는 이들입니다. 그러나 약속을 지키시는 하나님의 신실하심이 이들을 가나안으로 이끄시는 것입니다.

First off, this second census isn't of the Exodus generation. No, this is the census of the wilderness generation, the second generation. Let's look together at verse 1: "After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest..." Notice something significant here. We don't see, "the Lord said to Moses and Aaron" anymore. Aaron, the great high priest and a key figure of the first generation, has passed on. And now, God is speaking to Eleazar, Aaron's son, a representative of the second generation. We'll delve into this more tomorrow, but the truth is, aside from Caleb and Joshua, not a single person from that first generation remained at the time of this second census. God's word held true: that rebellious first generation would not enter the promised land.

Now, does that mean this second generation was a completely different story, a victorious generation through and through? The answer is, not really. Deuteronomy 2:14 tells us that the entire first generation had already died out before they even reached the land east of the Jordan. In other words, what you meditated on yesterday wasn't something that happened to the first generation, but to this very second generation! What did they do at Baal-peor just yesterday? They indulged in sexual immorality with Moabite women, and a plague broke out, killing 24,000 of them! This second generation was just like the first. They were no different when it came to sinning against God.

But despite all of that, God is leading them into the promised land of Canaan. And that, my brothers and sisters, is where the grace of God shines through! They were undeserving. But it is the faithfulness of God, His commitment to His promises, that is leading them into Canaan.

            인구조사 얘기하다가 왜 갑자기 가나안 이야기 나오는 것일까? 그것은 오늘 본문의 두번째 인구조사가 첫번째 인구조사와 다르기 때문입니다. 첫번째 인구조사가 행군이나 전쟁을 위해서 이루어진 것이라면 두번째 인구조사는 가나안 땅에 들어가기 위한 준비로서 이루어진 것입니다. 그 예로 2차 조사에서는 지파별 가문 목록을 기록하고 있습니다. 가나안 땅을 정복하고 기업을 나눠주어야 하기에 구체적인 가족 단위로 구별할 필요가 있었던 것입니다. 그래서 5절을 보시면 1차 조사와는 다르게 가장 먼저 르우벤 자손의 인구가 나옵니다. 행진을 위해서라면 대열의 가장 앞에 서는 제 1대 유다지파의 인구가 나와야 할 것입니다. 그런데 제 2대에 해당하는 르우벤 지파가 먼저 나옵니다. 그러면서 본문 5절의 말씀은 인구조사를 이렇게 시작합니다. “이스라엘의 장자는 르우벤이라.” 그렇습니다. 장자인 르우벤을 가장 먼저 조사에 넣은 것은 유산을 받을 때에 장자를 가장 먼저 언급하는 것과 같습니다. 오늘의 인구조사는 단순히 행군이나 전쟁을 위한 인구조사가 아니라 앞으로 땅을 분배하는 것을 염두해 둔 인구조사임을 보여주는 것입니다. 그래서 요셉의 아들들도 1차 조사에서는 둘째인 에브라임을 먼저 언급하지만 오늘 28절에서는 장자인 므낫세를 먼저 언급하고 있습니다. 33절에서 뜬금없이 남성이 아닌  슬로브핫의 딸들의 이름들이 나오는 것도 바로 오늘의 인구조사는 땅을 분배하기 위함임을 보여주는 것입니다. 자격없는 이들이 약속의 땅으로 들어가서 분깃을 받는 것. 그것은 전적인 하나님의 은혜입니다. 세대를 뛰어넘어 약속을 지키시는 하나님의 신실하심입니다.

Now, you might be thinking, why are we talking about Canaan all of a sudden when we're discussing a census? Well, it's because this second census in our passage is different from the first. The first census was conducted for the purpose of marching and warfare. But this second census is a preparation for entering the land of Canaan. For example, this second counting records the clans within each tribe. Because they needed to conquer the land of Canaan and divide the inheritance, it was necessary to distinguish them by their specific family units.

That's why, if you look at verse 5, unlike the first census, the count of the Reubenites, the firstborn son of Israel, comes first. If this census were for marching, we would expect the tribe of Judah, who led the way in the marching order, to be listed first. But here, Reuben, representing the second generation's firstborn status, is mentioned first. And verse 5 begins, "Reuben was the firstborn of Israel." That's right. Listing Reuben first, the firstborn, is like mentioning the firstborn when it comes to inheritance. This census today isn't just about numbers for an army; it's a census taken with the distribution of the land in mind.

That's also why, in contrast to the first census where Joseph's younger son Ephraim was mentioned first, verse 28 today lists Manasseh, the older son, first. And the seemingly out-of-place mention of the daughters of Zelophehad in verse 33 also points to the fact that this census is about the distribution of the land. Undeserving people entering the promised land and receiving their inheritance – that is purely the grace of God. It is the faithfulness of God that transcends generations, fulfilling His promises.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘의 인구조사는 이스라엘 제 2세대가 하나님이 약속하신 가나안 땅으로 들어가기 위한 것임을 보았습니다. 그러나 우리는2세대도 1세대와 마찬가지로 범죄하는 백성임을 어제의 말씀을 통하여 보았습니다. 그들이 가나안 땅으로 들어갈 수 있었던 것은 전적으로 하나님의 신실하심 때문입니다. 하나님께서 아브라함과 맺으신 약속. 이스라엘 백성들과 맺으신 약속을 따라 세대를 뛰어넘어 당신의 일을 이루시는 하나님의 신실하심인 것입니다. 그런 하나님의 신실하심을 의지하여 나아가기 원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

So, let me bring it all together. We've seen that the census today is for the second generation of Israel as they prepare to enter the promised land of Canaan. But we also saw through yesterday's reflection that this second generation was also a people prone to sin, just like the first. The only reason they were able to enter Canaan was because of God's unwavering faithfulness. It is God's faithfulness to the covenant He made with Abraham, the covenant He made with the people of Israel, working through the generations to accomplish His purposes. Let us rely on that same faithful God as we move forward. Let us pray.
