18:1 여호와께서 아론에게 이르시되 너와 네 아들들과 네 조상의 가문은 성소에 대한 죄를 함께 담당할 것이요 너와 네 아들들은 너희의 제사상 직분에 대한 죄를 함께 담당할 것이니라

18:2 너는 너 형제 레위 지파 곧 네 조상의 지파를 데려다가 너와 함께 있게 하여 너와 네 아들들이 증거의 장막 앞에 있을 때 그들이 너를 돕게 하라

18:3 레위인은 네 직무와 장막의 모든 직무를 지키려니와 성소의 기구와 제단에는 가까이 하지 못하리니 두렵건대 그들과 너희가 죽을까 하노라

18:4 레위인은 너와 합동하여 장막의 모든 일과 회막의 직무를 다할 것이요 다른 사람은 너희에게 가까이 하지 못할 것이니라

1 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. 2 Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister before the tent of the covenant law. 3 They are to be responsible to you and are to perform all the duties of the tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die. 4 They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting—all the work at the tent—and no one else may come near where you are.

18:5 이와 같이 너희는 성소의 직무와 제단의 직무를 다하라 그리하면 여호와의 진노가 다시는 이스라엘 자손에게 미치지 아니하리라

18:6 보라 내가 이스라엘 자손 중에서 너희의 형제 레위인을 택하여 내게 돌리고 너희에게 선물로 주어 회막의 일을 하게 하였나니

18:7 너와 네 아들들은 제단과 휘장 안의 모든 일에 대하여 제사장의 직분을 지켜 섬기라 내가 제사장의 직분을 너희에게 선물로 주었은즉 거기 가까이 하는 외인은 죽임을 당할지니라

5 “You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar, so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again. 6 I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the Lord to do the work at the tent of meeting. 7 But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain. I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift. Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.”

18:8 여호와께서 또 아론에게 이르시되 보라 내가 내 거제물 곧 이스라엘 자손이 거룩하게 한 모든 헌물을 네가 주관하게 하고 네가 기름 부음을 받았음으로 말미암아 그것을 너와 네 아들들에게 영구한 몫의 음식으로 주노라

18:9 지성물 중에 불사르지 아니한 것은 네 것이라 그들이 내게 드리는 모든 헌물의 모든 소제와 속죄제와 속건제물은 다 지극히 거룩한즉 너와 네 아들들에게 돌리리니

18:10 지극히 거룩하게 여김으로 먹으라 이는 네게 성물인즉 남자들이 다 먹을지니라

8 Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion, your perpetual share. 9 You are to have the part of the most holy offerings that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain or sin or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons. 10 Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it. You must regard it as holy.

18:11 내게 돌릴 것은 이것이니 곧 이스라엘 자손이 드리는 거제물과 모든 요제물이라 내가 그것을 너와 네 자녀에게 영구한 몫의 음식으로 주었은즉 네 집의 정결한 자마다 먹을 것이니라

11 “This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.

18:12 그들이 여호와께 드리는 첫 소산 곧 제일 좋은 기름과 제일 좋은 포도주와 곡식을 네게 주었은즉

18:13 그들이 여호와께 드리는 그 땅의 처음 익은 모든 열매는 네 것이니 네 집에서 정결한 자마다 먹을 것이라

12 “I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain they give the Lord as the firstfruits of their harvest. 13 All the land’s firstfruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours. Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.

18:14 이스라엘 중에서 특별히 드린 모든 것은 네 것이 되리라

18:15 여호와께 드리는 모든 생물의 처음 나는 것은 사람이나 짐승이나 다 네 것이로되 처음 태어난 사람은 반드시 대속할 것이요 처음 태어난 부정한 짐승도 대속할 것이며

18:16 그 사람을 대속할 때에는 난 지 한 달 이후에 네가 정한대로 성소의 세겔을 따라 은 다섯 세겔로 대속하라 한 세겔은 이십 게라이니라

14 “Everything in Israel that is devoted to the Lord is yours. 15 The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the Lord is yours. But you must redeem every firstborn son and every firstborn male of unclean animals. 16 When they are a month old, you must redeem them at the redemption price set at five shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs.

18:17 오직 처음 태어난 소나 처음 태어난 양이나 처음 태어난 염소는 대속하지 말지니 그것들은 거룩한즉 그 피는 제단에 뿌리고 그 기름은 불살라 여호와께 향기로운 화제로 드릴 것이며

18:18 그 고기는 네게 돌릴지니 흔든 가슴과 오른쪽 넓적다리 같이 네게 돌릴 것이니라

18:19 이스라엘 자손이 여호와께 거제로 드리는 모든 성물은 내가 영구한 몫의 음식으로 너와 네 자녀에게 주노니 이는 여호와 앞에 너와 네 후손에게 영원한 소금 언약이니라

17 “But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy. Splash their blood against the altar and burn their fat as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 18 Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering and the right thigh are yours. 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”

18:20 여호와께서 또 아론에게 이르시되 너는 이스라엘 자손의 땅에 기업도 없겠고 그들 중에 아무 분깃도 없을 것이나 내가 이스라엘 자손 중에 네 분깃이요 네 기업이니라 

20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.

어제 본문 마지막을 살펴봤을 때 이렇게 끝났습니다. “12 이스라엘 자손이 모세에게 말하여 이르되 보소서 우리는 죽게 되었나이다 망하게 되었나이다 다 망하게 되었나이다 13 가까이 나아가는 자 곧 여호와의 성막에 가까이 나아가는 자마다 다 죽사오니 우리가 다 망하여야 하리이까 (민 17:12-13).” 이스라엘 백성들 안에 하나님에 대한 두려움으로 가득 찼습니다. 무엇보다 성막에 가까이 접근하면 다 죽게될 수 있다는 두려움이 가장 컸습니다. 그런 이스라엘 백성들의 민심을 아시고 하나님께서 제사장과 레위인의 역할을 다시 정리해주십니다. 제사장이 역할을 잘 감당한다면 백성들이 성막에 접근해도 죽지 않을 것이기 때문입니다. 오늘 본문을 통해서 과거 구약시대의 제사장들의 임무를 묵상하며 오늘날 우리에게 적용해보길 원합니다.

Let’s look at how yesterday’s passage ended:

“The Israelites said to Moses, ‘We will die! We are lost, we are all lost! Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die. Are we all going to perish?’” (Numbers 17:12–13)

The people of Israel were filled with fear toward God—most of all, they were terrified that anyone who came too close to the tabernacle might die. Seeing this fear among the people, God reestablishes the roles of the priests and the Levites. If the priests properly fulfilled their duties, the people wouldn’t die even if they came near the tabernacle. Through today’s passage, I’d like to reflect on the duties of Old Testament priests and apply them to our lives today.

1. 제사장들의 직무와 따르는 책임감

먼저 아론과 그의 아들들이 맡은 제사장으로서의 일은 1절에 잘 나와져있습니다. “여호와께서 아론에게 이르시되 너와 네 아들들과 네 조상의 가문은 성소에 대한 죄를 함께 담당할 것이요 너와 네 아들들은 너희의 제사장 직분에 대한 죄를 함께 담당할 것이니라 (민 18:1).” 여기에 언급되는 ‘성소에 대한 죄’는 예를 들자면 3절과 같은 상황입니다. “레위인은 네 직무와 장막의 모든 직무를 지키려니와 성소의 기구와 제단에는 가까이 하지 못하리는 두렵건대 그들과 너희가 죽을까 하노라 (3).” 혹여나 실수로 일반 백성이나 레위인들이 성막 안으로 들어오거나 함부로 성물을 만지면 거룩하신 하나님 앞에 죽을 수 밖에 없었습니다. 그러므로 ‘성소에 대한 죄를 담당한다’라는 말은 이러한 일이 일어나지 않도록 막는 책임이 있다는 말입니다. 그리하여 원래는 백성들이 각 자의 죄를 위해 직접 제사를 했어야겠지만 그러다가 잘못 실수하면 다 죽게되니 제사장들이 백성들을 대신해 성막 안에서 제사 직무를 담당하는 것입니다.

1. The Duties of Priests and Their Responsibilities

We see clearly in verse 1 what duties Aaron and his sons, as priests, were given:

“The Lord said to Aaron, ‘You, your sons, and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses associated with the priesthood.’” (Numbers 18:1)

The phrase “offenses connected with the sanctuary” refers to situations like in verse 3:

“The Levites are to be responsible to you and perform all the duties of the tent, but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die.” (v.3)

If common people or even Levites accidentally entered the sanctuary or touched sacred objects, they could die before the holy God. So “bearing responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary” means the priests were responsible for preventing such incidents. Originally, each person would offer sacrifices for their own sins, but because doing so incorrectly could lead to death, the priests were designated to carry out the rituals on behalf of the people inside the tabernacle.

결국 이스라엘 백성 중 기름부음 받음으로 거룩하다 구별된 오직 아론과 그의 아들들만이 하나님이 머무시는 가장 거룩한 성소에 들어갈 수 있는 영광을 누렸습니다. 이들은 백성과 하나님의 관계를 중간에서 중재하며 그들이 죄지은 후에도 다시 하나님 앞으로 나올 수 있게 했습니다. 그러나 그에 따르는 책임으로 그들 자신을 제일 먼저 거룩하게 유지해야 했습니다. 그리고 ‘제사장 직분에 대한 죄’라고 나와 있듯이 제사장들도 결국은 인간이라 실수로 죄를 지어 하나님 앞에 죽을 수 있기에 이 직분의 위험성을 잘 나타냅니다. 이들이 맡은바 역할을 잘 해낼 때, “여호와의 진노가 다시는 이스라엘 자손에게 미치지 아니하리라(5b)”하신 축복이 이뤄질 수 있었습니다. 

Only Aaron and his sons—anointed and set apart as holy from among all the Israelites—were allowed to enter the Most Holy Place where God’s presence dwelled. They mediated between God and the people, helping them return to God even after they had sinned. But this privilege came with great responsibility: they themselves had to remain holy above all. And just as verse 1 mentions “offenses associated with the priesthood,” even the priests, as human beings, could make mistakes and die before God. This shows the seriousness and risk of the priestly role. When the priests fulfilled their duties well, the promise could be fulfilled that: “No further wrath will fall on the Israelites.” (v.5b)

2. 그에 따른 선물

그리고 이제 우리에게 그 제사장의 직분이 주어졌습니다. 베드로 사도는 베드로전서 2:9에서 이 시대 그리스도인들을 “왕 같은 제사장들”이라고 표현했습니다. 이 시대에 맞게 세상과 구별되어 거룩하게 살며 하나님의 주신 사명을 감당해야합니다. 오늘 본문 6절부터 나오는 이렇게 하나님의 거룩한 사역을 감당하는 제사장에게 주어지는 보수를 보며 지금 현대에도 이어지는 그 특혜들입니다.

(1)   동역자

제사장들에게 레위인들의 존재는 선물과도 같았습니다. “보라 내가 이스라엘 자손 중에서 너희의 형제 레위인을 택하여 내게 돌리고 너희에게 선물로 주어 회막의 일을 하게 하였나니(6).” 레위인들은 제사장들의 최측근으로 함께 하나님께 구별되어 성막을 위해 봉사하는 존재들이었죠. 누구보다 서로의 노고와 애환을 잘 아는 서로에게 동병상련의 마음을 가질 수 있는 사이가 돼죠. 레위인들이 제사장을 돕는 것이 하나님의 섭리에 의해 당연할 수 있지만 또한 이걸로 인해 거만함과 특권 의식을 가지는 것 대신에 이들의 도움이 감사고 하나님의 은혜임을 기억해야 할 것입니다.

같은 의미로 하나님의 나라를 함께 섬길 수 있는 동역자를 만날 수 있는 것은 참된 축복이고 하나님의 선물임을 느낍니다. 저도 짧지만 사역을 해보면서 이것이 혼자할 수 있는 일이 아니기에 함께 하나님의 나라에 비전을 갖고 동거동락하는 교회 내 많은 봉사자님들, 특히 리더를 맡아주시는 분들께 큰 감사와 위로를 얻고는 합니다. 그리고 또한 제가 교회에서 목사님이나 중직자분들께 그런 존재가 되어 드려야겠지요. 함께 하나님의 나라를 위해 섬기시며 하나님이 선물을 주시는 것 같은 동역자들과 함께 더욱 깊고 즐거운 신앙생활을 누리시길 기도드립니다.

2. The Gifts That Follow

Now that priestly role has been given to us. The apostle Peter says in 1 Peter 2:9 that we are “a royal priesthood.” As Christians today, we are to live holy, set-apart lives, fulfilling the mission God has given us. Starting from verse 6, the passage lists the blessings or “rewards” given to priests for carrying out this holy work. And even today, these blessings continue in a spiritual form.

(1)   Fellow Workers

For the priests, the Levites were a gift from God:

“I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the Lord to do the work at the tent of meeting.” (v.6)

The Levites served closely with the priests, devoted to the work of the tabernacle. They shared in the burdens and joys of ministry, and could deeply understand each other’s struggles. While it was God’s plan for the Levites to assist the priests, the priests were to receive their help with gratitude, not entitlement. They were to remember that this support was God's grace. Likewise, having coworkers to serve alongside in God’s kingdom is a true blessing and a gift. I, too, even in my short time in ministry, have realized this is not a task one can handle alone. I’m deeply thankful for the many volunteers and especially the leaders in our church who share the vision of God’s kingdom with me. And I, in turn, should strive to be that kind of support to our pastors and church leaders. I pray that you, too, will experience joyful, fulfilling faith as you walk and serve alongside fellow workers—God’s precious gifts to you.

(2)   생계 지원

또한 하나님은 따로 경제활동을 하지 못하고 오직 성막에서만 일을 해야하는 제사장들의 모든 먹을 거리를 책임져 주셨습니다. 8절부터 19절까지를 짧게 요약해 보자면, 번제를 제외한 소제, 속죄제, 속건제를 후 나온 고기와 밀가루, 각종 자발적 봉헌물, 첫 소산물, 온전히 바친 헌정물, 첫 태생들이 있습니다. 오늘날로 치자면 여러분들의 헌금으로 주어지는 목회자 사례비입니다. 원래가 하나님 일을 하기위해 지어진 존재인데 그 일을 위해 전념하라고 보수까지 챙겨주시니 얼마나 큰 은혜입니까. 또 이렇게 하나님이 공급자 되시는 삶을 살고 그 은혜를 누리는 자들이 무조건 목회자여야지만 되는건 아니지 않습니까? 내 삶에 먹고 마시고 누리는 모든 것들이 하나님이 채워주셨다고 믿고 감사하는 마음이 넘쳐나시길 바랍니다.

(2) Provision for Daily Life

God also took responsibility for the daily needs of the priests, who couldn’t engage in other work but served only at the tabernacle. To summarize briefly from verse 8 to 19: they were provided with food and sustenance from the grain offerings (except the burnt offering), sin offerings, guilt offerings, voluntary offerings, firstfruits, dedicated things, and the firstborn of flocks. Today, we could compare this to the salary or support that pastors receive through the congregation’s offerings. How gracious is it that God, who created us to do His work, also provides for us so we can focus on it fully? And this kind of life—living with God as the provider and experiencing His grace—isn’t limited only to pastors. May we all overflow with gratitude, recognizing that every meal we eat, every drink we enjoy, and everything we have is God’s provision.

(3)   하나님

마지막으로 20절입니다. “여호와께서 또 아론에게 이르시되 너는 이스라엘 자손의 땅에 기업도 없겠고 그들 중에 아무 분깃도 없을 것이나 내가 이스라엘 자손 중에 네 분깃이요 네 기업이니라 (20).” 다른 12지파가 다 받은 가나안 땅의 기업을 레위 지파는 받지 못했습니다. 땅을 기업으로 받으면 거기서 삶의 터전을 갖고 농사 짓고 목축을 가꾸고 경제활동을 하고 부를 쌓고 할 수 있겠죠. 뭔가 마음 속 한켠에 위로가 되는 보험같은? 근데 그런 존재가 레위지파를 더불어 제사장들에게는 오직 하나님밖에 없습니다. 근데 사실은 이 말씀이 땅을 기업으로 주시는 약속보다 더 마음이 든든해져야 맞지 않습니까? 온 땅을 지으신 하나님이 내 분깃이요 내 기업이라니. 이렇게 우리가 하나님의 존재보다 더 크게 위로를 느끼는 것들이 뭐가 있을까요? 은행 잔고? 퇴직 연금? 주식? 오늘 새벽, 이것들에서부터 눈을 들어 하나님 자체만으로 충만함을 느끼며 앞으로 우리에게 주실 천국 기업에 소망두는 여러분 되시길 기도드립니다.

(3) God Himself

Finally, verse 20 says:

“The Lord said to Aaron, ‘You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.’” (v.20)

The tribe of Levi didn’t receive land in Canaan like the other tribes. Normally, land meant stability—a place to settle, farm, raise livestock, run a business, and build wealth. It offered a kind of emotional insurance. But for the Levites—and especially the priests—God alone was their portion and inheritance. Isn’t that even more comforting than the promise of land? The Creator of the entire earth says He is our portion. What could offer us greater comfort than that? Is it our bank account? A retirement fund? Stocks? This morning, I pray you would lift your eyes above all these things and find fullness in God Himself—placing your hope in the heavenly inheritance He has prepared for us.
