20240416 [새벽묵상] 인생의 집에서 중요한 것 | The Important Thing in the House of Life (왕상/1Kings 7:1~22)

1 It took Solomon thirteen years, however, to complete the construction of his palace. 2 He built the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon a hundred cubits long, fifty wide and thirty high,[a] with four rows of cedar columns supporting trimmed cedar beams. 3 It was roofed with cedar above the beams that rested on the columns—forty-five beams, fifteen to a row. 4 Its windows were placed high in sets of three, facing each other. 5 All the doorways had rectangular frames; they were in the front part in sets of three, facing each other.

6 He made a colonnade fifty cubits long and thirty wide.[c] In front of it was a portico, and in front of that were pillars and an overhanging roof.

7 He built the throne hall, the Hall of Justice, where he was to judge, and he covered it with cedar from floor to ceiling.[d] 8 And the palace in which he was to live, set farther back, was similar in design. Solomon also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.

9 All these structures, from the outside to the great courtyard and from foundation to eaves, were made of blocks of high-grade stone cut to size and smoothed on their inner and outer faces. 10 The foundations were laid with large stones of good quality, some measuring ten cubits and some eight. 11 Above were high-grade stones, cut to size, and cedar beams. 12 The great courtyard was surrounded by a wall of three courses of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams, as was the inner courtyard of the temple of the Lord with its portico.

13 King Solomon sent to Tyre and brought Huram, 14 whose mother was a widow from the tribe of Naphtali and whose father was from Tyre and a skilled craftsman in bronze. Huram was filled with wisdom, with understanding and with knowledge to do all kinds of bronze work. He came to King Solomon and did all the work assigned to him.

15 He cast two bronze pillars, each eighteen cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference. 16 He also made two capitals of cast bronze to set on the tops of the pillars; each capital was five cubits high. 17 A network of interwoven chains adorned the capitals on top of the pillars, seven for each capital. 18 He made pomegranates in two rows encircling each network to decorate the capitals on top of the pillars. He did the same for each capital. 19 The capitals on top of the pillars in the portico were in the shape of lilies, four cubits high. 20 On the capitals of both pillars, above the bowl-shaped part next to the network, were the two hundred pomegranates in rows all around. 21 He erected the pillars at the portico of the temple. The pillar to the south he named Jakin and the one to the north Boaz. 22 The capitals on top were in the shape of lilies. And so the work on the pillars was completed.

We often describe life as the process of building a house. That is, life means 'the process of building a beautiful house and passing it on to my descendants or future generations'. Therefore, when we accept this meaning, you and I must have the question of what kind of house we are living to build, or what kind of house we have built.

What kind of house is the house that my life has built? Is it a collapsing shack or a solid and splendid palace? This issue is a method of evaluating one's entire life to oneself or one's descendants and cannot be overlooked. Those of us who believe and follow the Lord must build a house through our entire life that is different from the houses that worldly people build, and what kind of house it should be is an important issue.

Today's text records the process of Solomon building his own palace after completing the construction of the temple. Through the text, we can understand what kind of house we should build. Now let's examine what the palace of Solomon signifies and what must be the necessary framework, the skeleton that must be in the house we should build.

1. The material of the house you and I build must be Christ.

Verse 1 begins with the expression, "Solomon built his own palace." This contrasts with "the house of God" which had been described until 6:38. Solomon took 13 years to build his palace. Since the construction period of the temple was 7 years, Solomon invested more than twice the time in building his palace.

It also means that he spent 20 years of his 40-year reign on construction. The fact that it took more than twice as much time indicates that he invested more materials and time in building his own palace. That is, while he did his best to build the temple, on the other hand, he was also zealous in elevating his own dignity.

Verses 2-5 describe the palace built with Lebanon cedar. The size of the palace is 100 cubits (50m) in length, 50 cubits (25m) in width, and 30 cubits (15m) in height. It is 1.5 times the size of the temple, and the same height as the temple. There are four rows of large cedar pillars, and the beams on top of the 45 pillars are covered with cedar. 15 cedar planks are placed on one beam. Also, the fact that there are three rows of window frames in verse 4 means that it is a three-story building.

First, if we look at the materials of the palace built by Solomon, of course, many materials were used, but the most important material is the cedar mentioned in verse 2. There is one feature of Solomon's palace, which is that it is a cedar palace using large cedar pillars.

The pillars, beams, and ceilings were all lined with cedar. However, in the Bible, the cedar tree is regarded as a very noble tree. But more important than the actual use of the tree is to look at the spiritual meaning of the tree.

Sometimes called 'God's cedar', cedar symbolizes God's glory. Psalm 80:10 says, "Its shadow covers the mountains and its branches are like the cedars of God." Also, in Ezekiel 17:22-23, it symbolizes Christ by saying, "Thus says the Lord GOD: 'I will take a high branch from the top of a tall cedar and plant it. From the top of its young branches, I will pluck off a tender one and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. / On the high mountain of Israel I will plant it, and it will bear branches and produce fruit and become a beautiful cedar. All kinds of birds will nest under it, and they will live in the shade of its branches.'"

Psalm 92:12 says, 'The righteous shall... grow like a cedar,' showing the healthy life of the righteous. Therefore, cedar was used for purification rites, temple building, or palace building.

If we summarize all these meanings, we can find one thing in common. In a word, the meaning of the cedar has something of heaven rather than something functional that the world speaks of, and more specifically, it means that the material of the palace represents the character of Jesus Christ.

So, what does it mean to build a palace out of cedar? It means that the material of the house should be the character of Christ, that is, the building material of our lives must be Jesus Christ. That is, the house that you and I must build through our entire lives should not be a house built by worldly desires, greed, or power, but a house built through the personality and character of our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you have been building a house with the materials of the world until now, I hope that you and I will become the ones who change such things one by one into the materials of Jesus' character and personality.

2. The House You and I Build Must Erect Pillars of God's Sovereignty.

Where specifically was the cedar used in Solomon's palace? The most important use of cedar was for the pillars. Verse 3 says, "Forty-five beams above the pillars were covered with cedar, with fifteen in a row." We need to pay attention to the fact that the pillars and beams, which are important skeletons in building a house, were built of cedar, symbolizing Christ.

This represents that the center and skeleton of our lives must be made up of the character of Christ and the sovereignty of God. The pillars and beams of the house built through your and my life must be Christ, no matter what happens. Because only Christ is the owner and leader of our lives.

Matthew 11:28-29 says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Amen.

We live in the world. In other words, because we are weak and frail human beings, we may sometimes sin, do things against our conscience, and fall into temptation. However, such human weakness and frailty can never knock down the most important pillars and beams in the house, that is, the house itself built through your and my entire life.

Because if the pillars and beams are strong, even if there are partial problems in the house, the house will not collapse. Although the house built through our lives may be chaotic and disordered at times, I hope that the pillars and beams are absolutely erected with God's sovereignty, and your and my life will follow only God.

Dear Saints,

At this time, I hope you will take a moment to look at the house built through the journey of your life. What kind of house has your life built so far? Is it a house filled only with worldly materials without realizing it? Or are you building an unstable house with one pillar on sand and another on rock? Now, once again, you must contemplate what kind of house you and I must build and move forward to rebuild a complete and solid house.

A solid house means that Jesus Christ must become all areas of your and my life. And we must build a house that erects pillars and beams with the sovereignty of God. Today, I pray that all saints will continue to build the house of your life with the Lord
