We, The Sinners of Jesus Christ | 몬/Phlm 1:1~25

1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker— 2 also to Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier—and to the church that meets in your home:
3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
4 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.
Paul’s Plea for Onesimus
8 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, 9 yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus— 10 that I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. 11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
12 I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. 13 I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. 14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary. 15 Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— 16 no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.
17 So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. 18 If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. 19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self. 20 I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.
22 And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.
23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. 24 And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers.
25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Among the 27 books of the New Testament, excluding the 4 Gospels, 1 historical book, and 1 prophetic book—a total of 6 books—the remaining 21 books are all Epistles. These 21 Epistles are further divided into 13 Pauline Epistles and 8 General Epistles. Philemon is classified among the Pauline Epistles as a Prison Epistle. The Prison Epistles refer to letters written by Paul while in prison, which include Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and today's text, Philemon. For reference, categorizing the remaining Pauline Epistles: Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, and Galatians are doctrinal epistles; 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus are pastoral epistles; and 1 & 2 Thessalonians are eschatological (Second Coming) epistles.
Philemon is a personal letter sent to Philemon (along with his wife Apphia, his son Archippus, verse 2) and his church, the church at Colossae, estimated to have been written around A.D. 60–61. The purpose of the letter is to recommend pardon for Onesimus, a slave of Philemon who had escaped, met Paul in prison, converted, and undergone a transformation (verses 10, 11). As Paul sends him back to Philemon, this letter serves as a formal letter of recommendation for amnesty. This logical progression aligns with Aristotle's deliberative rhetoric. The structure consists of the greeting identifying sender and recipient (verses 1–3), Thanksgiving (verses 4–7), the main body recommending Onesimus (verses 8–21), and the closing remarks (verses 22–25).

Philemon, a Brother Who Brings Joy and Comfort (Verses 4–7)
Apostle Paul speaks of Philemon with deep emotion and gratitude. Paul mentions that whenever he prays for Philemon, he always gives thanks. Philemon was a man of love and faith who brought refreshment and peace to the saints of the church. Hearing such news brought great joy and abundant comfort to Apostle Paul's heart.
In serving the church, one experiences a wide variety of believers with different backgrounds, levels of faith, and personalities. Some believers bring immense comfort and joy to a pastor, while others weigh heavily on a pastor's heart. Of course, this is completely understandable given that everyone is at a different stage in their walk of faith. However, since we are pursuing faith life anyway, it would be wonderful to become believers who bring joy and comfort to our pastors' hearts.
The way to bring joy and comfort to a pastor is to love God and live out a faithful life. While buying a pastor meals and treating them well is certainly appreciated, nothing makes a pastor happier or more joyful than seeing a believer genuinely love and serve God.

I Appeal to You in Love Instead (Verses 8–17)
This letter allows us to sense the character and standing of a great apostle. The heart of the letter is a request to Philemon to welcome back Onesimus—a former slave of his who had stolen his property and fled—this time as a brother. It appears that Onesimus met Paul in a Roman prison and underwent a transformation. Consequently, he has become a deeply useful person to Paul and is currently assisting him.
However, Paul intends to send Onesimus back to Philemon so he can seek forgiveness and clear his past. Under the culture of that era, a slave who stole property and ran away could face the death penalty at the sole discretion of the master. Therefore, without Philemon's forgiveness, Paul could not continue to keep Onesimus as his close companion. For this reason, Apostle Paul sends him back to Philemon to make right all previous wrongs.
Of course, since Philemon owed a debt of grace to Paul, Paul was in a position where he could have easily commanded him with apostolic authority. Instead, Paul respectfully appeals to Philemon in love. Paul recommends that Philemon forgive him, defending Onesimus and testifying to his transformation. As a person who acts with propriety, the apostle plans to appoint Onesimus as his right-hand man only after first receiving Philemon's forgiveness and consent.

So That It May Be Done Voluntarily (Verse 14)
We often see that problems arise whenever things are done by compulsion. Whether in church work or secular matters, tasks are far more efficient, effective, and meaningful when an individual carries them out voluntarily and of their own free will. The same applies to church service: it is crucial that it is done willingly rather than by coercion, as this is the biblical way.
Verses 1 and 2 bring tremendous grace. The apostle describes his identity as "Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus." In the original text, it literally reads "Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ." Before being imprisoned in a physical jail, Paul was first a prisoner bound to Jesus. Thus, his life belonged not to himself, but to Jesus. That is why his physical body is now imprisoned for the sake of Christ.
Paul was someone who had received such grace and love from Jesus. And it is from this place that Paul counsels and entreats Philemon. The reason Onesimus departed from Philemon in that manner took place within God's providence (v. 15). Paul now urges him to treat Onesimus no longer as a slave, but as a beloved brother. Furthermore, he asks that when Philemon receives him, he welcome him with love just as he would welcome Paul himself (v. 17). If Onesimus owes anything, Paul asks for it to be charged to his own account. Yet, Paul gently notes that Philemon's own debt to Paul need not even be mentioned.
What kind of debt did Philemon owe Paul? It was the debt of salvation. The name Philemon derives from phileo (love), and he too was someone who owed a debt of love to Apostle Paul. Moreover, Philemon and his house church were recipients of Jesus' love. Therefore, the love of Jesus and the apostle already poured out upon him would serve as more than enough motivation for Philemon to extend forgiveness and love toward Onesimus.

Fellowship with believers in the church is a truly grateful, joyful, and wonderful thing. However, due to our immature character and faith, conflicts often arise. Even so, it is rare for us to experience the kind of betrayal Philemon endured—having a slave steal property and run away. If such a thing were to happen to us, how would we handle Onesimus? Forgiving him would certainly be no easy task.
Yet, Apostle Paul reveals the truth to us: Apostle Paul himself was like Onesimus to Jesus Christ; Philemon was like Onesimus to Jesus and Apostle Paul; and we, too, were once like Onesimus...
Therefore, refusing to forgive Onesimus is akin to refusing to forgive ourselves. Apostle Paul says to Philemon: "Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say." (v. 21) What would be the reason God gave us this Book of Philemon? Is it not because He knows that we, too, will obey the Word of God? Let us take heart. Let us remember that I am Onesimus, and let us remember that Jesus forgave someone like me—an Onesimus! We, too, can forgive and love. Through that very love of the Lord.
