The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

1 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, “No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.”

3 David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. 4 He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:

5 From the descendants of Kohath,

Uriel the leader and 120 relatives;

6 from the descendants of Merari,

Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives;

7 from the descendants of Gershon,

Joel the leader and 130 relatives;

8 from the descendants of Elizaphan,

Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives;

9 from the descendants of Hebron,

Eliel the leader and 80 relatives;

10 from the descendants of Uzziel,

Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives.

11 Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.” 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.

            신앙생활을 하다보면 때로 실패하는 때가 있습니다. 하나님의 일을 분명 좋은 마음과 열정을 가지고 시작했는데 기대한 열매를 얻지 못하거나 오히려 역효과만 나버리는 상황이 생기곤 하지요. 이런 실패의 경험은 우리로 하여금 하나님의 일을 다시 시작하는 것을 주저하게 만들며 때로는 아예 시도할 생각조차 못하게 만들어버립니다. 그럴 때 우리는 말씀 안에서 답을 찾아야 합니다. 하나님의 말씀 안에서 답을 찾고 우리의 생각과 방법을 말씀 앞에서 잘 살펴야 합니다. 그리고 그 말씀으로 얻은 답을 가지고 다시 일어나야 합니다. 오늘의 본문이 그렇습니다. 언약궤 1차 이송에서 실패를 경험한 다윗은 하나님의 말씀에서 그 원인과 해답을 찾았습니다. 그리고 이번에는 하나님의 말씀 앞에 옳은 방식으로 다시 언약궤를 옮기기 시작합니다. 그는 뼈아픈 실패를 경험하였음에도 주저 앉아있지 않았습니다. 말씀에서 답을 찾고 다시 궤를 옮기는 일에 도전합니다. 오늘은 “말씀 안에서 답을 찾고 다시 일어나라”는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction

In the Christian life, there are times when we experience failure. We may begin a work for God with sincere hearts and genuine passion, yet fail to bear the expected fruit—or worse, end up facing unintended, painful consequences. Such experiences of failure often make us hesitant to start again, sometimes leaving us so discouraged that we feel we cannot even attempt it.

In those moments, we must look for the answer within God’s Word. We must examine our thoughts and methods before Scripture, find the answer in the Word, and rise up once again with the clarity it provides.

Today’s passage shows us this very reality. After experiencing bitter failure during the first attempt to transport the Ark of the Covenant, David searched God’s Word to discover both the cause and the solution. This time, he began to move the Ark in the right way—standing firmly on the truth of Scripture. Even though he had suffered a painful setback, he did not remain slumped in discouragement. He found the answer in the Word and dared to move the Ark once again.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “Find the Answer in the Word and Rise Again.”

            어제 말씀이었던 14장에서 다윗은 국제적인 명성을 얻고 블레셋을 격파하여 자신의 왕권을 확고히 세웠습니다. 그 과정 가운데서 우리는 다윗이 하나님을 전적으로 의뢰하며 그 말씀에 귀기울이는 모습을 보았습니다. 다윗의 이러한 모습은 오늘 본문에서도 그대로 이어집니다. 2절은 다윗이 하나님의 말씀 안에서 답을 찾았음을 보여줍니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “다윗이 이르되 레위 사람 외에는 하나님의 궤를 멜 수 없나니 이는 여호와께서 그들을 택하사 여호와의 궤를 메고 영원히 그를 섬기게 하셨음이라 하고” 다윗은 하나님의 궤를 멜 수 있는 사람은 레위 사람 뿐인 것을 분명히 합니다. 그러면서 그 이유를 여호와께서 그들을 택하셨기 때문이라고 설명합니다. 이는 신명기 10:8에 근거한 명령입니다. 제가 읽어보겠습니다. “그 때에 여호와께서 레위 지파를 구별하여 여호와의 언약 궤를 메게 하며 여호와 앞에 서서 그를 섬기며 또 여호와의 이름으로 축복하게 하셨으니 그 일은 오늘까지 이르느니라” 그는 말씀을 통해 깨달은 것입니다. 거룩한 성물을 다루는 자격은 그들의 열심이나 선의가 아니라 오직 여호와의 주권적인 선택에 달려있다는 것을 말입니다. 다윗이 지난 실패의 원인을 말씀에서 찾았음을 알려주는 지표는 또 있습니다. 13절의 말씀입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “전에는 너희가 메지 아니하였으므로 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리를 찢으셨으니 이는 우리가 규례대로 그에게 구하지 아니하였음이라 하니” 다윗은 이전의 실패가 규례대로 하나님께 구하지 않았기 때문임을 알았습니다. 그는 첫번째 이송에서 범한 실수를 정확히 인정합니다. 그들이 선한 목적과 열심으로 일을 추진하였음에도 실패하였던 것은 하나님의 말씀을 따라 하나님께 구하지 않았기 때문이며 하나님께서 명령하신 방법대로 실행하지 않았기 때문입니다.

1. Finding the Answer in God's Word (vv. 1–2, 13)

In yesterday's passage (chapter 14), David gained international renown, defeated the Philistines, and securely established his royal authority. Throughout that process, we saw David relying entirely on God and listening attentively to His Word. This same posture continues in today's text.

Verse 2 reveals that David found the answer in God's Word:

“Then David said, ‘No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever.’”

David clearly states that only the Levites are permitted to carry the Ark of God, explaining that the reason lies in the LORD’s sovereign choice. This command is rooted directly in Deuteronomy 10:8:

“At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister to him and to pronounce blessings in his name, as they do to this day.”

Through Scripture, David realized a foundational truth: qualification to handle holy things depends not on human zeal or sincere motives, but solely on the sovereign election of the LORD.

Another indicator showing that David located the cause of his previous failure in the Word is found in verse 13. Let us read together:

“Because you did not carry it at first, the LORD our God broke out against us, for we did not inquire of him according to the rule.”

David understood that their prior failure occurred because they had not sought God according to the prescribed rule (mishpat). He candidly acknowledges their exact mistake. Even though they had pursued a good end with great zeal, they failed because they did not seek God in alignment with His Word and did not carry out the task in the manner He had commanded.

            그래서 그는 이제 여호와의 말씀을 따라 명령한대로 행하기 시작합니다. 그리고 그것이 그가 다시 2차 이송을 시작할 수 있는 힘이 되었습니다. 2절에서 말씀 안에 답을 찾은 다윗은 3절에서 다시 여호와의 궤를 올리고자 합니다. 지난번 1차 시도 때처럼 이스라엘의 온 백성을 예루살렘으로 모았는데 이번에는 그때와 다르게 4절을 보니 아론 자손과 레위 사람을 모았다고 합니다.하나님의 말씀을 따라 명령한대로 행하고 있는 것입니다. 다윗의 명령에 따라 5-7절을 보니 레위인의 3대 자손인 그핫 자손, 므라리 자손, 게르솜 자손이 모두 모였습니다. 나머지 8-10절의 자손들은 그핫 자손의 사람들입니다. 이들은 민수기 7:9의 율법에 언약궤를 어깨에 메어 옮기는 역할을 맡은 이들입니다. 다윗이 철저히 율법에 따라, 레위인들 중에서도 고핫자손에게 이 직무를 맡기고 있음을 보여주고 있는 것이지요. 또한 다윗은 11절을 보니 그렇게 부른 레위 자손들 중에서 레위 사람의 지도자들만 다시 따로 부릅니다. 그리고 12절에서 다윗은 그들에게 가장 먼저 몸을 성결하게 하라고 명령합니다. 하나님의 거룩한 임재나 성물에 가까이 나아가는 자들이 몸을 성결하게 해야 한다는 것은 모세 율법의 가장 근본적인 원칙 중에 하나이지요. 출애굽기 19:22에서 하나님께서는 이렇게 명령하십니다. “또 여호와에게 가까이 하는 제사장들에게 그 몸을 성결히 하게 하라 나 여호와가 그들을 칠까 하노라” 여기서 ‘치다’ 라는 단어는 역대상 13장과 오늘 본문에서 하나님이 우리, 즉, 웃사를  찢으셨으니 라고 번역된 단어와 동일한 단어입니다. ‘베레스 웃사’라고 할 때의 그 파라츠가 바로 이 단어이지요. 다윗은 1차 실패 후 하나님의 말씀을 깊이 연구하면서 자신들이 하나님의 말씀대로 행하지 않아서 실패한 것임을 깨달은 것입니다. 그래서 이번에는 철저하게 하나님의 말씀을 따라 명령한대로 행하는 데에 최선을 다한 것입니다. 우리는 그것을 오늘 본문 15절에서 볼 수 있습니다. 15절을 함께 읽겠습니다. “모세가 여호와의 말씀을 따라 명령한 대로 레위 자손이 채에 하나님의 궤를 꿰어 어깨에 메니라” 레위인이 어깨에 메는 것, 레위인이 몸을 성결하게 하는 것, 이 모든 것은 모세의 율법책에 적힌 하나님의 규례를 따라 그대로 이행한 것입니다. 그렇게 했을 때에 그는 아픈 실패에도 불구하고 다시 일어날 수 있었습니다.

2. Walking in Obedience to the Word (vv. 3–15)

Because David now possessed the answer found in the Word, he began to act exactly as God commanded—and this became the driving strength for the second transport attempt.

Having found the answer in verse 2, David gathered all Israel to Jerusalem in verse 3 to bring up the Ark of the LORD. However, unlike the first attempt, verse 4 notes that he specifically assembled the sons of Aaron and the Levites. He was acting in strict compliance with God's command.

In response to David's summons, verses 5–7 record that the three main clans of the Levites assembled: the Kohathites, the Merarites, and the Gershomites. Verses 8–10 list additional leaders from among the Kohathite clan. These were the very ones assigned by the Law in Numbers 7:9 to carry the holy items on their shoulders. David was meticulously following the Law by entrusting this sacred duty specifically to the Kohathites among the Levites.

Furthermore, verse 11 shows that David called the chief priests and leaders among the Levites. In verse 12, he gave them their very first order: to consecrate themselves.

“He said to them, ‘You are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites. Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place that I have prepared for it.’”

That those who draw near to God's holy presence or handle holy objects must consecrate themselves is one of the most fundamental principles in the Law of Moses. In Exodus 19:22, God commanded:

“Also let the priests who come near to the LORD consecrate themselves, lest the LORD break out against them.”

Here, the Hebrew word for “break out” (pāraz) is the exact same word translated as "broke out" when God struck Uzzah in chapter 13 (Perez-Uzzah), as well as in verse 13 of today’s passage.

After the initial tragedy, David deeply studied God's Word and realized that their failure stemmed from neglecting His explicit commands. Therefore, this second time, he gave his utmost effort to obey God's Word to the very letter.

We see the culmination of this obedience in verse 15:

“And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD.”

The Levites carrying the Ark on their shoulders, the Levites consecrating their bodies—every single detail was carried out in direct fulfillment of the decrees written in the Law of Moses. Because he aligned himself with the Word, David was able to rise again despite a painful, heartbreaking failure.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 실패하였을 때에, 주저 앉게 되었을 때에 말씀에서 그 답을 찾으십시오. 말씀을 따라 하나님께 구하고 하나님께서 명령하신 대로 행하기 시작하십시오. 그것이 여러분을 일으킬 것이며 하나님의 일을 다시 시작할 수 있게 하는 힘이 될 것입니다. 말씀에서 답을 얻고 그 말씀에 순종하여 실패를 딛고 일어나는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion

When you experience failure, when you find yourself fallen and discouraged, seek the answer in God’s Word. Inquire of the LORD through Scripture and begin to act according to what He has commanded.

That Word will lift you up and give you the strength to resume God's work.

May each of you find your answers in the Word, walk in obedience to it, and rise above every failure. I pray this in the name of the Lord. Amen.
