14:1 두로 왕 히람이 다윗에게 사신들과 백향목과 석수와 목수를 보내 그의 궁전을 건축하게 하였더라

14:2 다윗이 여호와께서 자기를 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼으신 줄을 깨달았으니 이는 그의 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 그의 나라가 높이 들림을 받았음을 앎이었더라

David’s House and Family

1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

14:3 다윗이 예루살렘에서 또 아내들을 맞아 다윗이 다시 아들들과 딸들을 낳았으니

14:4 예루살렘에서 낳은 아들들의 이름은 삼무아와 소밥과 나단과 솔로몬과

14:5 입할과 엘리수아와 엘벨렛과

14:6 노가와 네벡과 야비아와

3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.

14:8 다윗이 기름 부음을 받아 온 이스라엘의 왕이 되었다 함을 블레셋 사람들이 듣고 모든 블레셋 사람들이 다윗을 찾으러 올라오매 다윗이 듣고 대항하러 나갔으나

14:9 블레셋 사람들이 이미 이르러 르바임 골짜기로 쳐들어온지라

14:10 다윗이 하나님께 물어 이르되 내가 블레셋 사람들을 치러 올라가리이까 주께서 그들을 내 손에 넘기시겠나이까 하니 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 올라가라 내가 그들을 네 손에 넘기리라 하신지라

David Defeats the Philistines

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim; 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”

14:11 이에 무리가 바알브라심으로 올라갔더니 다윗이 거기서 그들을 치고 다윗이 이르되 하나님이 물을 쪼갬 같이 내 손으로 내 대적을 흩으셨다 하므로 그 곳 이름을 바알브라심이라 부르니라

14:12 블레셋 사람이 그들의 우상을 그 곳에 버렸으므로 다윗이 명령하여 불에 사르니라

11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim. 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.

14:13 블레셋 사람들이 다시 골짜기를 침범한지라

14:14 다윗이 또 하나님께 묻자온대 하나님이 이르시되 마주 올라가지 말고 그들 뒤로 돌아 뽕나무 수풀 맞은편에서 그들을 기습하되

14:15 뽕나무 꼭대기에서 걸음 걷는 소리가 들리거든 곧 나가서 싸우라 너보다 하나님이 앞서 나아가서 블레셋 사람들의 군대를 치리라 하신지라

14:16 이에 다윗이 하나님의 명령대로 행하여 블레셋 사람들의 군대를 쳐서 기브온에서부터 게셀까지 이르렀더니

13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley; 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

14:17 다윗의 명성이 온 세상에 퍼졌고 여호와께서 모든 이방 민족으로 그를 두려워하게 하셨더라

17 So David’s fame spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear him.

                어제의 말씀 13장은 하나님의 언약궤를 옮기지 못하고 실패하는 다윗의 모습을 다루었습니다. 그러면 그 글을 읽는 독자들은 질문이 생깁니다. 혹시 다윗도 사울처럼 실패한 왕은 아닌가? 웃사 사건으로 다윗 역시 사울처럼 하나님께 버림받는 것은 아닌가? 하는 질문 말입니다. 오늘 말씀은 그 질문에 아주 크게 그렇지않다 라고 대답하고 있는 것 같습니다. 뼈아픈 실패에도 불구하고 하나님께서는 여전히 다윗을 왕으로 높이시고 그에게 복을 주시는 모습이 오늘 말씀에 가득하기 때문입니다. 오늘 말씀에서 다윗은 시시때때로 하나님을 인정합니다. 그리고 자신이 왕으로서 무엇을 하려는 것이 아니라 진정한 왕이신 하나님께서 당신의 백성들을 위하여 자신을 세우시고 사용하시는 것임을 알았습니다. 하나님께서는 그렇게 당신을 의뢰하는 다윗을 높이셔서 그의 명성이 온 세상에 퍼지게 하십니다. 오늘은 “하나님을 의뢰하는 자를 높이시는 하나님”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction

Chapter 13 left us with a painful picture: the failure to bring up the Ark of God, culminating in the tragic death of Uzzah. Anyone reading that account might naturally wonder: Is David destined to be a failed king just like Saul? Did the Uzzah incident mean that God has rejected David as well?

Today’s text answers those anxious questions with a resounding no. Despite David’s agonizing setback, God continues to exalt him as king and pour out abundant blessings upon his reign.

Throughout this chapter, David acknowledges God at every turn. He recognizes that his kingship is not about building his own empire; rather, the true King of Israel has established him for the sake of His chosen people. Because David continually inquires of God and trusts in His sovereignty, God exalts him and spreads his fame throughout the known world.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “The God Who Exalts Those Who Rely on Him.”

                분명 여호와의 궤를 모셔오는 첫번째 시도는 실패하였습니다. 그래서 하나님의 궤는 오벧에돔의 집에 있었지만 하나님께서는 그럼에도 다윗을 축복하시고 그의 왕권을 공고히 하시는 것을 우리는 볼 수 있습니다. 1절을 보니 두로 왕 히람이 다윗에게 사신들과 함께 궁전을 건축할 자재들과 기술자들을 보내 다윗의 궁전을 건축하게하였다고 합니다. 이것은 단순한 외교적인 행위 그 이상의 것이지요. 본디 고대 근동에서 왕궁 건축은 왕권 확립의 표지였다고 합니다. 그래서 왕궁 건설은 다윗의 왕권이 굳건히 세워지고 있음을 보여주는 것이지요 또한 두로와 같이 부유한 나라에서 모든 자재들과 기술자들을 직접 보내어 왕궁을 건설하게 한다는 것은 온 이스라엘의 국격이 국제적으로 얼마나 높아졌는지를 드러내는 장면이기도 합니다. 그래서 2절은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “다윗이 여호와께서 자기를 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼으신 줄을 깨달았으니 이는 그의 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 그의 나라가 높이 들림을 받았음을 앎이었더라” 이스라엘의 국격이 올라가는 소리가 들리십니까? 또한 우리는 이 말씀에서 왜 하나님께서 다윗을 축복하셨는지 그 이유를 알 수 있습니다. 다윗은 자신의 왕권이 확립되는 것을 보면서 자신을 왕으로 세우신 분이 바로 하나님이심을 깨달았다고 합니다. 자 그런데 여기에 재미있는 표현이 나옵니다. “그의 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 그의 나라가 높이 들림을 받았음을 앎이었더라” 자, 이 대목에서 ‘그’란 누구를 가르키는 말일까요? 다윗일까요? 아니면 하나님일까요? 저는 역대기의 저자가 일부러 이런 이중적인 표현을 썼다고 생각합니다. 왜 입니까? 다윗은 자신이 왕이면서도 하나님이 진정한 왕이심을 잊지 않았습니다. 그래서 그는 여호와의 보좌인 언약궤를 모셔오려 한 것이며 이스라엘은 자신의 백성이지만 실은 하나님의 백성임을 그래서 자신의 나라이면서 하나님의 나라가 높이 들림을 받았다는 것을 알았던 것입니다. 바로 그 일을 위해 자신은 왕으로 세워졌으며 이 모든 일은 하나님의 주권아래에 이루진 일이라는 것을 그는 깨달았던 것입니다. 그렇기에 그는 하나님의 축복을 받습니다. 3-7절은 그가 받은 자녀의 축복을 나열하고 있습니다.

1. God Establishes Those Who Acknowledge His Sovereignty (vv. 1–7)

Though the first attempt to bring up the Ark ended in failure—leaving the Ark temporarily in the house of Obed-Edom—God nevertheless blessed David and consolidated his royal authority.

In verse 1, King Hiram of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs, masons, and carpenters to build him a royal palace. In the ancient Near East, the construction of a palace was the definitive sign of an established, sovereign reign. Furthermore, having a wealthy maritime power like Tyre supply both luxury materials and skilled artisans demonstrated how dramatically Israel's international standing had risen.

Verse 2 records David's profound realization in response to these blessings:

“And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.”

Here we discover why God blessed David so richly: David recognized that it was the LORD who had made him king.

Notice the intriguing phrasing in verse 2: "his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel." To whom does "his" refer—David or God? The author of Chronicles uses this dual nuance intentionally. David never forgot that while he wore the crown, God remained the true King over Israel. Israel was David’s nation, but ultimately it was God’s nation. David understood that he was raised up to serve God's sovereign purpose for His people, and for that reason, God’s favor rested upon him.

Verses 3–7 further illustrate this divine favor as God grants David the blessing of a growing family.

                8-17절은 다윗이 블레셋과 치뤘던 두번의 전투를 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 두 번 모두 백전노장인 자신의 지식이나 전략을 따르지 아니하고 철저히 그 전투를 하나님께 의뢰하는 모습을 보여줍니다. 재미있지 않습니까? 분명 8절을 보면 이 전투는 다윗이 온 이스라엘의 왕이 되었다는 소식을 듣고 모든 블레셋 사람들이 쳐들어온 상황입니다. 그렇다면 이 전투는 누구의 전투여야 합니까? 다윗의 전투여야 하지요. 그런데 다윗은 그 소식을 듣고 대항하러 나갔으나 10절을 보니 그 전투의 결정을 하나님께 의뢰합니다. 다윗은 하나님께 두가지를 묻습니다. 첫째는 ‘내가 전투를 시작해도 되겠습니까?’ 하는 군사 행동의 승인 요청이고. 둘째는 ‘그들을 내 손에 넘기시겠나이까’ 하는 승리의 보장에 대한 물음입니다. 이는 전술적인 기동에서부터 전쟁의 결과까지 최고 통수권자의 모든 결정권을 하나님께 내어드리는 장면입니다. 다윗은 자신이 아니라 하나님이 진정한 왕이시며 이 싸움은 하나님의 전쟁이라는 것을 인정하고 있는 것입니다. 그 결과가 무엇이었습니까? 11절을 보니 다윗이 이렇게 고백합니다. “다윗이 이르되 하나님이 물을 쪼갬같이 내 손으로 내 대적을 흩으셨다.” 내가 했다는 것입니까? 하나님이 하셨다는 것입니까? 하나님이 하셨다는 것입니다. 하나님이 나의 손을 사용하셔서 내 대적을 흩으셨다라고 고백하고 있는 것입니다. 두번째 전투에서는 더 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 블레셋이 다시 쳐들어오자 14절을 보니 분명하게 “다윗이 또 하나님께 묻자온대” 라고 적고 있습니다. 다윗이 하나님께 늘 물어왔다는 것을 보여주는 것이지요. 그런데 그때에 하나님께서 이번에는 매복 기습을 하라고 알려주시면서 15절을 보니 이런 말씀을 하십니다. “너보다 하나님이 앞서 나아가서 블레셋 사람들의 군대를 치리라” 무슨 말씀입니까? 다윗이 하나님을 진정한 왕으로 인정하고 의뢰하자 하나님께서 왕으로서 친히 이 전장에 나서시겠다고 선포하시는 것입니다. 이 뽕나무는 웬만한 바람이 불어도 소리가 나지 않는 나무라고 합니다. 그때에 들리는 걸음소리가 무엇이겠습니까? 하나님의 천군만마가 진격하는 소리인 것입니다. 하나님께서 자신을 의뢰하는 자를 위하여 전장에 직접 나가시는 소리인 것입니다. 전투의 결과는 당연하게도 대승이었습니다. 이 일들을 통하여 하나님께서는 17절을 보니 자신의 의뢰하였던 다윗의 명성을 온 세상에 퍼지게 하셨습니다. 그런데 또 앞에서와 같은 표현이 나오지요 “여호와께서 모든 이방 민족으로 그를 두려워하게 하셨더라” 여기서 ‘그’란 다윗과 하나님 모두를 가르킬 수 있는 표현입니다. 다윗이 하나님을 온전히 의뢰하였기에 모든 민족이 다윗을, 또 하나님을 두려워하게 되었던 것입니다.

2. God Fights for Those Who Inquire of Him (vv. 8–17)

Verses 8–17 record two distinct military encounters with the Philistines. In both instances, David refused to rely on his own military expertise or strategic veteran instincts, choosing instead to depend entirely on God.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they mobilized their forces in full strength to capture him (v. 8). Though David marched out to meet them, he did not initiate combat until he sought divine counsel. In verse 10, David asked two critical questions:

1. “Shall I go and attack the Philistines?” (Seeking authorization for military action)

2. “Will you deliver them into my hands?” (Seeking divine guarantee of victory)

David surrendered the full decision-making authority—from tactical maneuvers to the ultimate outcome—to God. He acknowledged that the battle belonged to the LORD.

When God granted him victory, David declared in verse 11:

“As waters break out, God has broken through my enemies by my hand.”

David did not take credit for the triumph; he openly confessed that God had used his hands to scatter the enemy.

In the second battle, when the Philistines raided the valley once more, verse 14 explicitly notes: "So David inquired of God again." Inquiring of the LORD was not a one-time gesture for David; it was his perpetual habit of heart.

This time, God gave him a different tactical instruction—to circle around behind them and ambush them opposite the balsam trees. God declared in verse 15:

“As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.”

Balsam trees do not easily rustle in ordinary wind. The "sound of marching" in the treetops was the advance of God's heavenly host! When David recognized God as the true King and Commander, God Himself stepped onto the battlefield to lead the charge.

The result was a total victory that swept the enemy away. Consequently, verse 17 summarizes:

“So David’s fame spread everywhere, and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.”

Once again, this phrase carries a dual resonance: as David relied wholeheartedly on the LORD, all surrounding nations came to fear both David and the Almighty God he served.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 분명한 실패에도 불구하고 하나님을 온전히 의뢰하였던 다윗을 축복하시는 하나님을 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님께서는 다윗의 왕권을 공고히 하셨고, 이스라엘의 국격을 높이셨습니다. 다윗은 이 모든 것이 진정한 왕이신 하나님께서 당신의 백성을 위하여 하신 일임을 알고 그 일을 위하여 하나님께서 자신을 왕으로 세우셨다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그는 전투에서도 오직 하나님을 의뢰하였습니다. 그러자 하나님께서는 당신께서 직접 이들의 왕이 되셔서 그 전투의 선봉에 서셨습니다. 하나님이야말로 진정한 왕이십니다. 당신의 백성을 돌보시고 그들의 싸움을 싸워주시는 분이십니다. 또한 그를 의뢰하는 자에게 복주시는 분이십니다. 그 선한 왕이신 하나님을 의뢰합시다. 하나님께 우리의 주권을 내어드리는 것을 두려워하지 말고 그분의 선한 성품을 기억하여 하나님을 의뢰합시다. 기도하시겠습니다.

Conclusion

Today’s text shows us a God who blesses and exalts those who rely on Him, even after moments of painful failure.

God established David's throne and elevated Israel's national standing because David humbly acknowledged that God was the true King, and that his own calling was to serve God's people. In every battle, David refused to lean on his own understanding, choosing instead to inquire of the LORD. In response, God stepped out ahead of him to fight his battles.

God is our true King today. He is the One who guards His people, fights our battles, and pours out His grace on those who rely on Him.

Do not fear surrendering total control of your life to Him. Trust in His good character, inquire of Him in every circumstance, and yield your life into the hands of the One who goes before you. Amen.
