119:137 여호와여 주는 의로우시고 주의 판단은 옳으니이다

119:138 주께서 명령하신 증거들은 의롭고 지극히 성실하니이다

119:139 내 대적들이 주의 말씀을 잊어버렸으므로 내 열정이 나를 삼켰나이다

137 You are righteous, Lord,

    and your laws are right.

138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous;

    they are fully trustworthy.

139 My zeal wears me out,

    for my enemies ignore your words.

140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested,

    and your servant loves them.

141 Though I am lowly and despised,

    I do not forget your precepts.

142 Your righteousness is everlasting

    and your law is true.

143 Trouble and distress have come upon me,

    but your commands give me delight.

144 Your statutes are always righteous;

    give me understanding that I may live.

148 My eyes stay open through the watches of the night,

    that I may meditate on your promises.

149 Hear my voice in accordance with your love;

    preserve my life, Lord, according to your laws.

150 Those who devise wicked schemes are near,

    but they are far from your law.

151 Yet you are near, Lord,

    and all your commands are true.

152 Long ago I learned from your statutes

    that you established them to last forever.

오늘 본문은 18번째 알파벳 차데 צ 연과 19번째 알파벳 코프 ק 연입니다. 시인이 앞선 연에서 말씀의 기이함에 대해서 노래했다면, 차데연에서는 영원히 공의로우신 하나님의 말씀에 대해서 노래합니다. 그리고 이어지는 코프연에서는 영원히 공의로우신 말씀에 의지하여 밤낮으로 하나님께 구원을 간구합니다.

영원히 의로우신 하나님의 말씀 (137, 138절)

시인은 주의 의로우심과 의로우신 주님이 명령하신 증거들의 의로움을 노래합니다. 의로우신 분의 말씀, 증거, 약속은 당연히 의롭습니다. 그러므로 동시에 그분의 판단이나 재판은 당연히 옳습니다. 여기에 방점을 찍는 것은 그분의 성실하심입니다. 말만 하는 분이 아니라, 말씀하신 것은 반드시 지키는 분이심을 시인은 성경과 이스라엘 역사를 통해서 알고 있습니다.

Today’s text covers the 18th stanza (Tsadhe צ) and the 19th stanza (Qoph ק). While the psalmist sang of the wondrous nature of God’s Word in the previous stanza, in the Tsadhe stanza he sings of the eternally righteous Word of God. Then, in the following Qoph stanza, relying on this eternally righteous Word, he cries out to God day and night for salvation.

The Eternally Righteous Word of God (vv. 137, 138)

The psalmist sings of the righteousness of the Lord and the righteousness of the testimonies He has commanded. The words, testimonies, and promises of a righteous God are naturally righteous. Therefore, His judgments and rulings are inherently right. What emphasizes this even further is His faithfulness. The psalmist knows—through Scripture and Israel's history—that God is not merely one who speaks, but One who faithfully fulfills whatever He has spoken.

내 열정이 나를 삼켰나이다 (139~142절)

시인의 대적들은 하나님의 말씀을 잊고, 사실은 개의치 않고 자신들의 욕심대로, 욕구대로 행하여 시인을 공격합니다. 하지만 시인의 하나님 말씀을 향한 열정은 하나님만 의지할 수밖에 없게 합니다(139). 한쪽은 규칙을 지키면서, 다른 한쪽은 규칙을 지키지 않으면서 경기를 하니, 규칙을 지키는 쪽이 얼마나 속이 상합니까? 그럼에도 시인은 주의 말씀이 너무도 순수하고 귀하기에, 그것을 사랑할 수밖에 없습니다(140).

"주의 전을 사모하는 열심이 나를 삼키리라"(시 69:9)는 말씀대로 예수님의 하나님을 향한 사랑이 십자가 죽음으로 내 몰았던 것처럼, 시인의 말씀을 향한 사랑이 그를 고난과 핍박, 불이익 가운데 있게 합니다. 그래도 시인은 주님의 말씀의 순수함과 고결함 때문에 말씀을 사무치도록 사모합니다.

비록 대적들이 예수쟁이, 어이~ 예배당 이라고 놀려도 주의 법도를 잊지 않습니다(141). 왜냐하면 주의 의는 영원한 의요, 주의 율법은 진리이기 때문입니다.

"My Zeal Consumes Me" (vv. 139–142)

The psalmist’s enemies forget God’s word—or rather, pay no mind to it—and attack him, acting according to their own greed and desires. Yet the psalmist's passion for God’s word leaves him with no choice but to rely on God alone (139). When one side plays by the rules while the other side breaks them, how deeply frustrating it is for the one keeping the rules! Nevertheless, because God's word is so pure and precious, the psalmist cannot help but love it (140).

Just as it is written, "Zeal for your house will consume me" (Ps. 69:9)—where Jesus’ love for God ultimately drove Him to death on the cross—so too does the psalmist’s love for the Word plunge him into suffering, persecution, and disadvantage. Even so, because of the purity and nobility of the Lord's word, he longs for it deeply.

Even if his enemies mock him, calling him a "Jesus-freak" or hollering "Hey, Church-boy!", he does not forget God's precepts (141). For the Lord's righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and His law is truth.

환난과 우환이 내게 미칠지라도 (143, 144절)

아무리 이렇게 결단해도 대적들의 놀림이나 괴롭힘, 환난이나 우환이 그치지 않습니다. 그럼에도 시인은 주의 계명이 나의 즐거움이라고 노래합니다. 과연 시인이 맛 본 말씀이 무엇이기에 이렇게도 놀라운 힘이 있는 것일까요?

그것은 하나님의 증거들이 영원히 의롭기 때문입니다(144). 히브리어 원문을 그대로 직역하자면 당신의 의로운 증거들이 영원합니다 입니다. 시인은 이 땅은 잠시요, 하나님의 말씀은 영원하다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 잠시 이 땅에서 괴로운 것은 영원히 즐거운 것과 비교할 수 없습니다.

그래서 너희도 떠나려느냐? 고 묻는 주님께, 주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까(요 6:68) 라고 베드로가 대답한 것입니다. 시인과 베드로는 영생을 주는 하나님 말씀을 맛보아 안 것입니다.

Though Trouble and Anguish Have Come Upon Me (vv. 143, 144)

No matter how firmly the psalmist resolves to stand fast, his enemies' mockery, harassment, trouble, and anguish do not cease. Nevertheless, the psalmist sings, "Your commandments are my delight." What exactly is the Word that the psalmist has tasted, that gives him such extraordinary strength?

It is because God's testimonies are eternally righteous (144). A literal translation of the original Hebrew reads: "The righteousness of Your testimonies is eternal." The psalmist knows that this earth is temporary, but the Word of God is eternal. The fleeting afflictions of this world cannot compare to eternal joy.

That is why, when the Lord asked, "Do you want to leave too?", Peter answered, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). Both the psalmist and Peter tasted and experienced the Word of God that imparts eternal life.

내가 주께 부르짖어 기도합니다 (145~148절)

그럼에도 고난은 언제나 괴로운 것입니다. 그래서 영원히 의로운 말씀을 믿는 시인은 영원히 의로우신 재판관께 기도합니다. 여기서 우리는 기도에 대해서 다시 한 번 배울 수 있습니다.

먼저 기도는 전심으로 부르짖는 것입니다(145).

구원을 간절하게 소리내어 구하는 것입니다. 그리고 기도했으면 그분의 약속의 말씀을 지켜야 합니다.

다음으로 밤과 새벽으로 기도해야 합니다(146, 147).

간절히 주를 부르는 자가 만나게 되어 있습니다. 예전 부모님 세대에 비해서 현대 기독교인들은 기도의 시간이 현저하게 줄었다고 합니다. 다른데를 찾아보지 않아도 됩니다. 제 자신이 부모님 세대와 비교해보면 심각하게 기도 시간이 부족합니다. 예전에는 매일 밤을 새워가며 기도하고, 새벽에 기도했는데… 그런 기도의 회복이 필요합니다.

마지막으로 약속의 말씀을 붙잡고 기도해야 합니다(147, 148)

영원히 의로우시고 성실하신 재판관이 하신 말씀을 붙잡고 기도할 때, 우리의 기도는 더욱 능력이 있습니다. 말씀을 바라고, 말씀을 조용히 읊조리며 노래하듯 기도해야 합니다. 소리내어 부르짖어 기도하고, 조용히 읊조리듯 기도하고, 찬양하며 노래로 기도해야 합니다. 수단과 방법으로 가리지 않고 전심으로 기도하라는 것입니다.

I Cry Out to You in Prayer (vv. 145–148)

Even so, suffering is always painful. That is why the psalmist, believing in the eternally righteous Word, prays to the eternally righteous Judge. Here, we can learn about prayer once again.

First, prayer is crying out with all one's heart (145). It is urgently calling out out loud for salvation. And once you have prayed, you must keep His word of promise.

Next, we must pray night and early morning (146, 147). Those who earnestly call upon the Lord are bound to meet Him. Compared to our parents' generation, it is said that modern Christians spend significantly less time in prayer. I don't need to look elsewhere—when I compare myself to my parents' generation, my prayer time is severely lacking. In the past, people prayed all night through, and prayed at dawn... We need a restoration of such prayer.

Finally, we must pray holding fast to the word of promise (147, 148). When we pray holding fast to the words spoken by the eternally righteous and faithful Judge, our prayers have even greater power. We must hope in the Word and pray as if quietly meditating on and singing it. We must pray by crying out aloud, pray by quietly meditating, and pray through praise and song. In other words, we must pray with all our heart, holding nothing back.

전심으로 기도한 후에 (149~152절)

시인은 부르짖어 기도한 후 다시 한번 주께 아룁니다. 내 소리를 들어주시고, 나를 살려주소서(149). 가장 원초적인 기도입니다. 지금 시인의 형편은 악인들은 시인에게 매우 가까이 있습니다. 하지만 그들은 하나님의 법에서 먼 자들입니다. 규칙을 지키지 않습니다. 법보다 주먹이 가까운 상황입니다.

이때 시인은 여호와 하나님께서 나와 가까이 계심을 기억합니다. 법보다 주먹이 가까워서 두려운 상황이지만, 시인은 주의 모든 계명이 진리라는 사실을 다시 한 번 상기합니다.

시인은 온 천지를 만드시고, 그것들을 성실하게 운행하시는 하나님의 섭리를 기억합니다. 그러므로 시인은 끝까지 말씀을 따라 규칙대로 경기를 할 것입니다. 비록 입술이 터지고, 코가 깨져도… 결국에는 영원히 의로우신 재판관이 올바른 판결을 내려주실 것을 확신하기 때문입니다.

우리의 억울함을 알아주시고, 공의로 판단하실 하나님을 기대합니다. 왜냐하면 나도 악인들과 다를바 없는 죄인이지만, 나는 내가 죄인임을 알기에 진리이신 하나님의 말씀을 붙잡습니다. 다시 말해서 말씀이신 예수를 붙잡습니다. 그의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻는다고 영원히 의로우신 하나님이 말씀 하셨기 떄문입니다.

After Praying with All One’s Heart (vv. 149–152)

After crying out in prayer, the psalmist appeals to the Lord once again: Hear my voice and give me life (149). This is the most foundational prayer. In the psalmist’s current situation, the wicked are very close to him. However, they are far from God’s law. They do not follow the rules. It is a situation where the fist is closer than the law.

At this moment, the psalmist remembers that Jehovah God is close to him. Although it is a frightening situation where the fist is closer than the law, the psalmist recalls once more that all of the Lord's commandments are truth.

The psalmist remembers God's providence—that He created all of heaven and earth and faithfully governs them. Therefore, the psalmist will continue to play the game according to the rules, following the Word to the end. Even if his lips are torn and his nose is broken... he remains confident that, in the end, the eternally righteous Judge will render the right verdict.

We look forward to the God who acknowledges our grievances and judges with righteousness. For although I am a sinner no different from the wicked, because I know that I am a sinner, I cling to the Word of God, which is truth. In other words, I cling to Jesus, who is the Word. For the eternally righteous God has spoken: Whoever calls on His name shall be saved.
