119:121 내가 정의와 공의를 행하였사오니 나를 박해하는 자들에게 나를 넘기지 마옵소서

119:122 주의 종을 보증하사 복을 얻게 하시고 교만한 자들이 나를 박해하지 못하게 하소서

119:123 내 눈이 주의 구원과 주의 의로운 말씀을 사모하기에 피곤하니이다

119:124 주의 인자하심대로 주의 종에게 행하사 내게 주의 율례들을 가르치소서

119:125 나는 주의 종이오니 나를 깨닫게 하사 주의 증거들을 알게 하소서

119:126 그들이 주의 법을 폐하였사오니 지금은 여호와께서 일하실 때니이다

125 I am your servant; give me discernment

    that I may understand your statutes.

126 It is time for you to act, Lord;

    your law is being broken.

127 Because I love your commands

    more than gold, more than pure gold,

128 and because I consider all your precepts right,

    I hate every wrong path.

119:129 주의 증거들은 놀라우므로 내 영혼이 이를 지키나이다

119:130 주의 말씀을 열면 빛이 비치어 우둔한 사람들을 깨닫게 하나이다

    therefore I obey them.

130 The unfolding of your words gives light;

    it gives understanding to the simple.

131 I open my mouth and pant,

    longing for your commands.

132 Turn to me and have mercy on me,

    as you always do to those who love your name.

133 Direct my footsteps according to your word;

    let no sin rule over me.

134 Redeem me from human oppression,

    that I may obey your precepts.

135 Make your face shine on your servant

    and teach me your decrees.

136 Streams of tears flow from my eyes,

    for your law is not obeyed.

얼마전 뉴스에 한 젊은 엄마가 나와서 한국의 교육 현실 때문에 눈물로 절규하는 모습을 보면서 무척 마음이 상한 적이 있습니다. 사연은 이렇습니다. 어느 이상한 교사가 초등학교 저학년 아이들에게 성교육을 시킨다면서 흑백으로된 여성/남성 성기 그림에 색연필로 색칠을 하는 활동을 했다는 것입니다.

그 이후 아이는 그렇게 좋아하던 색칠공부를 하자는 말만 들어도 매우 민망해하면서 피한다는 현실을 얘기하면서 젊은 엄마는 언제 내 자녀에게 이런 공부를 시켜달라고 부탁한 적이 있냐며 울분을 토해낸 것입니다. 오늘 본문의 시편 기자의 마음이 그 젊은 엄마의 마음과 같습니다.

그들이 주의 법을 폐하였사오니 지금은 여호와께서 일하실 때니이다(126)

Recently, my heart was deeply pained when I watched a young mother appear on the news, crying out in tears over the reality of education in Korea. The story went like this: a strange teacher, under the guise of providing sex education to young elementary school children, had them color black-and-white drawings of female and male genitalia with colored pencils.

She shared the tragic reality that ever since then, her child—who used to love coloring—blushes deeply with embarrassment and avoids it whenever coloring is even mentioned. The young mother vented her indignation, asking when she had ever requested such an education for her child. The heart of the Psalmist in today’s text is just like that young mother’s heart.

"It is time for you to act, Lord; your law is being broken." (Psalm 119:126)

나를 박해하는 자들에게서 구원하소서 (121~123절)

시인은 주의 말씀이 꿀송이 보다 달고, 그 말씀이 즐겁기 때문에 고난 중에 소망을 가지며 이겨낼 수 있다고 노래했습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 고난이 사라지는 것이 아닙니다. 여전히 시인을 박해하는 교만한 자들이 있습니다. 주님의 말씀을 지키고 그 말씀대로 산다는 것은 여간 힘든 일이 아닙니다. 여러가지 제약과 희생을 감수해야 합니다. 다른 사람들은 저렇게 사는데, 우리는 꼭 이렇게 살아야 해? 라는 의문이 들때도 있습니다. 오죽하면 시인은 주의 구원과 의로운 말씀을 사모하는 것이 피곤합니다(123) 고백하겠습니까?

그래서 시인은 여호와께 악인들로부터 자신을 구원해 주시기를 간구합니다. 그렇게 간구할 수 있는 근거는 시인이 정의와 공의를 행했기 때문입니다(121). 주의 말씀에 순종하는 자를 구원해주신다는 것은 하나님의 언약입니다. 그러므로 주께서는 그를 보증하사 복을 주시고, 그를 교만한 자들의 박해해서 구원해 주셔야 합니다(122).

Save Me From Those Who Persecute Me (Verses 121–123)

The Psalmist sang that he could hold on to hope and overcome suffering because the Lord's word was sweeter than honey and brought him joy. However, that does not mean the hardship vanishes. There are still arrogant people who persecute him. Living according to God’s word and obeying it is by no means an easy task. It requires enduring various restrictions and sacrifices. At times, doubts arise: Others live like that, so do we really have to live like this? Is it any wonder the Psalmist confesses, "My eyes fail looking for your salvation, looking for your righteous promise" (v. 123)?

Therefore, the Psalmist prays for the Lord to save him from the wicked. The basis for offering such a prayer is that he has done what is right and just (v. 121). It is God's covenant to save those who obey His word. Thus, the Lord must ensure his well-being, grant him blessings, and rescue him from the persecution of the arrogant (v. 122).

주의 율례들을 가르치소서 (124, 125절)

시인은 하나님이 그 인자하심에 근거하여 주의 율례들을 가르쳐 주시기를 간구합니다. 또한 자신은 주의 종이오니 나를 깨닫게 하사 주의 증거들을 알게 해주실 것을 간구합니다. 시인은 자신을 주의 종이라고 노래합니다. 그래서 학자들은 그가 레위인이었을 것이라고 추측합니다.

분명한 것은 그가 제대로 된 자의식을 가지고 있다는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 자녀이며, 동시에 주의 종입니다. 신분으로는 자녀이지만, 사역이라는 면에 있어서는 종입니다. 우리는 명확한 이 두가지 자의식을 가지고 있어여 합니다.

시인이 주의 율례와 주의 증거를 가르쳐 주시고, 깨닫게 해달라는 이유도 이와 연결됩니다. 하나님의 언약의 말씀이 우리를 자녀요 종이라 가르쳐주시고, 하나님의 자녀는 반드시 악한 자들로부터 구원을 받을 것이라고 약속하기 때문입니다. 그 언약의 말씀을 가르쳐 주시고, 알게 해달라는 요청은 실제로 그 구원의 언약의 말씀을 체험하여 알게 해달라는 기도입니다. 진정한 앎은 체험에서 나오는 것이니까요.

Teach Me Your Decrees (Verses 124–125)

centered on His steadfast love, the Psalmist prays for God to teach him His decrees. Furthermore, declaring himself to be God's servant, he asks for understanding so that he may know His testimonies. Because the Psalmist sings of himself as the Lord's servant, scholars speculate that he may have been a Levite.

What is clear is that he possessed a sound sense of identity. We are children of God and, at the same time, servants of the Lord. In terms of our status, we are His children; but in terms of ministry, we are His servants. We must hold firmly to this dual sense of identity.

This ties directly into why the Psalmist asks to be taught and given understanding of God’s decrees and testimonies. The word of God’s covenant teaches us that we are both children and servants, promising that God's children will surely be saved from the wicked. Therefore, his request to be taught and to know that covenant word is a prayer to experience and know that very promise of salvation firsthand. After all, true knowledge comes from experience.

지금은 여호와께서 일하실 때니이다 (126~128절)

시인은 지금은 여호와께서 행동하실 때라고 요청합니다. 왜냐하면 그들이 당신의 법을 폐했기 때문입니다.

하지만 시인은 주의 계명을 순금보다 더 사랑한다고 고백합니다. 세상에는 하나님의 말씀을 무시하고

버리는 자들이 있는가 하면, 그의 말씀을 순금보다 더 사랑하는 자들이 있습니다.

하나님의 말씀을 사랑하는 자들은 그 말씀을 옳바르게 여기고 지킵니다. 그리고 모든 거짓된 행위를 미워합니다. 여호와를 두려워하고 사랑하는 것이 죄를 미워하는 것이기 때문입니다. 오늘날 우리에게 필요한 기도는 주의 법을 폐하는 자들을 보면서, 여호와께서 행동하실 때라고 울분하는 기도입니다. 무너지는 교육과 가정과 사회, 질서를 보면서 우리는 눈물로 여호와께서 일하시기를 기도해야 합니다. 

It Is Time for the Lord to Act (Verses 126–128)

The Psalmist asks for action, pleading that now is the time for Jehovah to act because they have voided Your law.

Yet, the Psalmist confesses that he loves Your commands more than fine gold. While there are those in the world who disregard and discard God’s word, there are also those who cherish His word more than pure gold.

Those who love God’s word regard it as right and keep it. Furthermore, they hate every false way. This is because to fear and love Jehovah is to hate sin. The prayer we need today is one of deep indignation, looking at those who abolish the Lord's law and crying out that it is time for Jehovah to act. As we witness the collapsing state of education, families, society, and moral order, we must pray with tears for Jehovah to work.

주의 말씀을 열면 빛이 비치어 (129~131절)

시인이 얼마나 주의 계명들을 사모하는지 짐승이 입을 열어 헐떡이듯 헐떡입니다. 마치 개나 사슴이 목말라 입을 열고 개구호흡을 하는 것과 같은 모습에 자신의 영적인 상태를 비유합니다. 시인이 이렇게 말씀을 갈망하는 이유는 주의 증거들이 너무도 아름다울 정도로 놀랍기 때문입니다(129). 또한 주의 말씀을 열면 빛이 비추어 우둔한 사람들인 우리 모두를 진리의 길로 깨닫게 하기 때문입니다(130). 그래서 야고보는 너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라(약 1:5)고 말한 것입니다. 성경을 열 때 빛이 비추어 우리는 지혜로운 사람이 됩니다. 

The Unfolding of Your Words Gives Light (Verses 129–131)

The Psalmist pants with longing for Your commandments, like a wild animal opening its mouth and panting for air. He compares his spiritual state to that of a dog or a deer opening its mouth to pant heavily out of sheer thirst. The reason he thirsts for the word so desperately is that Your testimonies are wondrous—so beautiful that they leave him in awe (v. 129). Furthermore, the unfolding of Your words gives light, imparting understanding to simple people like us and guiding us along the path of truth (v. 130). This is why James writes, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you" (James 1:5). When we open the Scriptures, light shines forth, turning us into wise people.

주의 이름을 내게로 돌이키사 (132, 133절)

시인은 주의 이름을 구합니다(132). 이름은 그 존재 자체를 의미합니다. 시인은 여호와 하나님을 구합니다. 그분의 능력과 도우심과 사랑과 자비를 구하는 것입니다. 사랑하는 자들에게 베푸시던 대로 라는 의미는 판례대로라는 재판 용어입니다. 정의롭고 공의로우신 하나님께서 늘 하시던대로 판결을 해달라는 요청입니다. 한편 시인은 어떤 죄악도 자신을 주관하지 못하도록 보호해 주시기를 간구합니다(133). 그는 자신의 연약함을 잘 알고 있습니다. 주님도 우리의 연약함을 잘 아십니다. 그래서 예수님은 우리를 시험에 들게 하지 마시옵고 다만 악에서 구하시옵소서(마 6:13)라고 기도하라고 가르쳐 주신 것입니다. 시인은 자신이 죄악의 유혹에 빠지지 않는 비결을 잘 알고 있습니다. 그것은 나의 발걸음을 주의 말씀의 반석에 굳게 세우는 것입니다. 이것만이 죄의 유혹을 이길 수 있는 유일한 비결입니다.

Turn to Me and Be Gracious to Me (Verses 132–133)

The Psalmist seeks the name of the Lord (v. 132). A name signifies the very essence of one's being; thus, the Psalmist seeks the LORD God Himself—asking for His power, help, love, and mercy. The phrase "as you always do for those who love your name" uses legal terminology, akin to relying on judicial precedent. It is a plea for the just and righteous God to render judgment as He consistently has in the past.

Meanwhile, the Psalmist prays for protection so that no sin may rule over him (v. 133). He is well aware of his own weakness, and the Lord understands our frailty just as well. That is why Jesus taught us to pray, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one" (Matthew 6:13). The Psalmist knows the secret to avoiding the temptation of sin: firmly establishing his steps upon the bedrock of God's word. This is the sole secret to overcoming sinful temptation.

다시 구원과 가르침을 간구합니다 (134~136절)

시인은 다시 한번 박해자로부터의 구원과 주의 율례를 가르쳐 주시기를 간구합니다. 여기서 중요한 표현이 주의 얼굴을 주의 종에게 비추시고(135a) 입니다. 시인은 글로만 읽는 하나님의 구원이 아닌 직접 자신이 경험한 산 지식을 얻기를 원합니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 진정한 배움, 믿음이기 때문입니다.

악인들이 주의 법을 지키지 않는 현실 가운데 우리의 마음이 무너져 내려, 눈물이 시냇물을 이룰 정도이지만(136), 우리는 계속하여 주의 구원, 곧 여호와께서 언약하신 것을 직접 이루시기를 간구해야 합니다. 구원을 주시는 주의 얼굴 빛을 구해야 합니다. 그래야 연약한 우리가 주의 율례를 따를 수 있기 때문입니다. 시인처럼 우리도 아론의 축복의 기도로 하나님께 우리의 마음을 아뢰기 원합니다.  

여호와는 네게 복을 주시고 너를 지키시기를 원하며

여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며

여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 드사 평강 주시기를 원하노라

(민 6:24~26)

Pleading Once More for Salvation and Instruction (Verses 134–136)

The Psalmist pleads once again for rescue from his oppressors and to be taught the Lord's decrees. A pivotal expression here is "Make your face shine on your servant" (v. 135a). The Psalmist desires not a salvation known merely through the written word, but a living knowledge gained through personal experience—because that is what true learning and faith genuinely are.

Even as our hearts crumble at the reality of the wicked flouting the Lord's law, causing streams of tears to flow down our eyes (v. 136), we must continuously pray for His salvation—that the LORD would personally fulfill what He has covenanted. We must seek the light of His face that brings salvation; only then can we, in our weakness, obey His decrees. Like the Psalmist, may we also lay our hearts before God through the words of the Priestly Blessing:
