נ Nun
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow your righteous laws.
107 I have suffered much;
preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
108 Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,
and teach me your laws.
109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands,
I will not forget your law.
110 The wicked have set a snare for me,
but I have not strayed from your precepts.
111 Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees
to the very end.
ס Samekh
113 I hate double-minded people,
but I love your law.
114 You are my refuge and my shield;
I have put my hope in your word.
115 Away from me, you evildoers,
that I may keep the commands of my God!
116 Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live;
do not let my hopes be dashed.
117 Uphold me, and I will be delivered;
I will always have regard for your decrees.
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees,
for their delusions come to nothing.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;
therefore I love your statutes.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you;
I stand in awe of your laws.

Everyone has likely experienced this at least once or twice: blinded by bright streetlights and the glaring headlights of other cars, you fail to realize that your own headlights aren't turned on. When driving on a well-lit road, driving without lights doesn't feel inconvenient at all because the surrounding lights make it feel as if your own headlights are already shining.
When does the crisis hit? It happens the moment you turn into an unlit alleyway or a pitch-black country road with no streetlights and no other cars around. Up until then, you believed your lights were on and felt perfectly fine, but only after entering the dark alley do you discover that your headlights have been off all along.
This is why walking through a dark, painful tunnel in life—as hard as it is—serves a purpose: it prompts us to seek out and light the lamp of God's Word. This is precisely the point the Psalmist makes when singing, "It was good for me to be afflicted" (Psalm 119:71).

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (v. 105–112)
Today’s passage consists of two stanzas: the 14th stanza, starting with the Hebrew letter Nun (נ), and the 15th stanza, starting with Samekh (ס).
Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12). And the Psalmist confesses, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Combining these two statements yields the equation: Word = Jesus = Lamp/Light.
This metaphorical expression—that God’s Word, or the Lord Himself, is a lamp and a light—means that only through His Word can we clearly understand, discern, and navigate the world. When you do not know where to go or what to do, reading and meditating on God's Word illuminates the path ahead.
This passage abounds with synonyms for God's Word: Your rules, Your righteous rules, Your law, Your testimonies, Your statutes, and Your commandments. What happens in our lives when God's Word becomes a lamp to our feet and a light to our path?
First, we resolve to obey God's Word (v. 106, 112).
A desire for holy living awakens within us. Whether the Word enlightening our path comes first, or the resolution to keep the Word precedes it, is a mystery—much like the question we will explore in the next stanza: "Does holding fast to the Word come first, or being held fast by Him?" We will revisit this in the 15th stanza.
Second, we offer spontaneous praise and learn His Word (v. 108).
When exposed to the light of God's Word, a desire naturally arises to offer sacrifices of praise and to learn His Word more deeply. The literal translation of "the freewill offerings of my mouth" refers to a voluntary offering (freewill offering). Contextually, it points to a sacrifice of praise offered willingly. A hallmark of someone filled with the Word and filled with Jesus is an overflow of praise from their lips.
Finally, the Word becomes our heritage and our joy (v. 111).
A "heritage" implies a business, an inheritance, or land. It means that God—or His Word—becomes the foundational bedrock of our lives, far more vital than simply making a living. When this happens, the Word brings genuine joy to our hearts. As the Psalmist sang in yesterday's passage, we can rejoice through the Word even in the midst of affliction.
This does not mean life becomes free of crisis. Even when affliction is severe (v. 107), when life is in constant danger (v. 109), or when the wicked lay a snare (v. 110), we do not fall to suffering or temptation; instead, we choose the joy found in the Word. We can do so because God's Word serves as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, clearly showing us the direction we must go.

"I hate double-minded people, but I love Your law" (v. 113–120)
The word used for "double-minded people" here is the same term Elijah used when he challenged the Israelite people serving Baal: "How long will you waver between two opinions?" (1 Kings 18:21). To be double-minded ultimately refers to idolatry—attempting to serve both the world and God simultaneously. All of us face this danger. The Psalmist confesses that he hates such people and loves God's law instead, clearly demonstrating what we must turn away from and what we must hold fast to.
Turn away from double-mindedness and those who embody it (v. 113).
Birds of a feather flock together; spending time with the double-minded makes it easy to become like them. We must serve God alone and distance ourselves from those who divide their loyalty.
Turn away from evildoers (v. 115).
The Psalmist commands evildoers to depart from him, which conversely means he is separating himself from them. Anyone who longs for God's Word must break ties with evil.
Turn away from those who stray from God's statutes (v. 118).
We must distance ourselves from those who refuse to keep the Word and ultimately shipwreck their faith.
Conversely, there are things we must hold fast to. Yet we often wonder: does God holding onto us come first, or does our holding onto God come first?
At its root, it is God's sustaining grace that enables us to cling to Him in the first place. The very ability to gather for early morning prayer, long for His Word, and pray is a result of His holding grace. Therefore, believers who seek and cling to the Word—just like the Psalmist—must never become proud before God.
At the same time, if we merely wait for God's sustaining grace while doing nothing ourselves, we will never experience being held by Him. Unless we actively grasp God's Word, anchor our hope in it, and pray for His help and salvation, we cannot experience the grace of His holding hand.

Finally, the Psalmist sings of a godly fear of the Lord. Why does he suddenly make such a confession?
The reasons are as follows:
God is our hiding place and shield (v. 114), as well as our Savior (v. 117).
At the same time, God—who is the Word—is the righteous Judge who spurns all who stray from His statutes and discards all the wicked like dross (v. 118, 119). We must never forget these two aspects of God's character.
When God's Word becomes a lamp to our feet, we clearly come to understand that He holds both of these attributes. That is why, for the Psalmist, the Word becomes a source of joy that overcomes present affliction and a lamp for daily life, while simultaneously instilling a reverence that causes us to tremble before Him. This awe is the astonishing grace granted to us when we truly learn the Word that serves as our lamp.
