20260907 [새벽묵상] 나는 명철한 사람이 맞습니까? Am I A Discerning Person?

ל Lamedh
89 Your word, Lord, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
you established the earth, and it endures.
91 Your laws endure to this day,
for all things serve you.
92 If your law had not been my delight,
I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have preserved my life.
94 Save me, for I am yours;
I have sought out your precepts.
95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me,
but I will ponder your statutes.
96 To all perfection I see a limit,
but your commands are boundless.
מ Mem
97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands are always with me
and make me wiser than my enemies.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
The power and eternal nature of God's Word have been widely experienced and testified throughout human history. There are endless stories of people who overcame the hardships of imprisonment through the power of the Word to become children of God, or those who endured indescribable suffering in life through the strength of Scripture and chose a life of praising Him.
The writer of Psalm 119 is one of those people. He sings of experiencing how the eternal Word of God gives him life, and how it made him wiser and more insightful than his enemies, his teachers, or the elders.

The Word That Gives Me Life (Verses 89–96)
The 12th stanza, Lamed (ל), begins every verse with the 12th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Lamed. In this stanza, the psalmist sings of the characteristics of God's Word.
The first characteristic of God's Word is its eternal nature (89).
In "Your faithfulness endures through all generations" (90a), faithfulness is synonymous with God's Word.
God is faithful, meaning He is faithful in fulfilling the promises He has spoken. Eternity is a temporal expression of God's omnipotence and creative power. Eternity presupposes an existence with neither beginning nor end. No one possesses such a nature except the almighty Creator God. Furthermore, the eternity of the Word signifies that the God who speaks is eternal, and by extension, that Jesus—the Word made flesh—is eternal.
The very reason the heavens and the earth continue to endure to this day is that they are firmly sustained by God's eternal Word (91).
Secondly, God's Word is the source of life (93).
The Word possesses power, serving as the source of strength for those in affliction to gain courage and break through their trials. This Word even became a source of delight to the psalmist amid his suffering. The psalmist's resolve never to forget that eternal Word allowed him to rise up and live through a crisis as dire as death itself.
In short, the eternal Word of God empowers us in times of trouble, grants us joy, and ultimately enables us to live. At the final moment of judgment, it becomes the power to live forever—because that Word is Jesus Himself. Indeed, the Word of God—Jesus—is the source of our life.
The psalmist observed that even everything in the world that appears perfect ultimately comes to an end. Physical beauty that seems everlasting, mighty power that once shook the world, and vast wealth that seemed capable of buying anything are all rendered powerless in the face of death—which can be viewed as another aspect of eternity. Ultimately, the psalmist confesses that only God's commands are exceedingly broad (96). "Exceedingly broad" refers to the spatial eternity that knows no boundaries. It is another way for the psalmist to express that God's Word alone is eternal.
What keeps us alive is precisely that eternal Word of God—Jesus, the Word made flesh.
The psalmist prays to that Word: "I am yours; save me" (94). The basis on which he can boldly pray this to the Lord is that he has sought only His precepts (94b) and meditates only on His testimonies (95). Anyone who seeks, meditates on, and follows only the eternal Word of God in every circumstance will live. Moreover, they will live eternally, just as the eternal Word promises.

What Happens When We Love the Word (Verses 97–104)
This is how the psalmist loves the Word. What, then, happens to us when we love the Word?
First, we whisper and recite God's Word all day long (97).
Older Bible translations rendered this as "meditate," which caused a slight misunderstanding. In fact, the original Hebrew text means to speak or whisper softly—in other words, to recite from memory. Just as a song heard on the radio in the morning stays on your lips and gets hummed all day long, the Word heard upon waking is repeatedly recited from memory like a song throughout the day. This is what it means to love the Word.
Next, God's Word makes us wise (98–100).
The psalmist declares that because Your commandments are always with him, he is wiser than his enemies. Furthermore, his insight surpasses that of his teachers—a true case of the student surpassing the master. He even sings that his discernment is superior to that of white-haired elders, who are considered symbols of wisdom and insight. Is the psalmist being arrogant here? Has the Word made him proud? Not at all. The prophet Jeremiah says:
"Thus says the Lord: 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.'" (Jeremiah 9:23–24)
What the psalmist boasts of is rejoicing in and treasuring the discernment that comes through knowing and loving the Lord God through His Word. No matter how much of an elder or a teacher someone may be, if they do not know God, their smarts are in vain.
Finally, when we love the Word, we do not depart from it (101–103).
Departing from the Word is itself an evil path. Those who are taught by the Lord do not stray from His Word. Moreover, we must come to know its taste. It is said that Jewish people put honey on Scripture pages for young children to taste, teaching them that the Word of God is sweeter than honey. This is known as a symbolic Torah initiation rite. In Hebrew, it was a representative ritual performed during Cheder—a traditional Jewish elementary school initiation. Beyond a single symbolic ceremony, we must read, recite, and learn the Word until we personally experience its sweetness—until its deep essence is extracted, until we truly taste the honey.

In the final verse, the psalmist sings, "Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way" (104).
Thus, true discernment is loving God's Word while simultaneously hating every false way—that is, hating evil. This is why the wise man spoke these words:
"The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate." (Proverbs 8:13)
Indeed. A discerning person loves the Word of God—which is Jesus—and hates false practices—which is evil.
Am I a discerning person?
