47:1 그가 나를 데리고 성전 문에 이르시니 성전의 앞면이 동쪽을 향하였는데 그 문지방 밑에서 물이 나와 동쪽으로 흐르다가 성전 오른쪽 제단 남쪽으로 흘러내리더라

47:2 그가 또 나를 데리고 북문으로 나가서 바깥 길로 꺾여 동쪽을 향한 바깥문에 이르시기로 본즉 물이 그 오른쪽에서 스며 나오더라

1 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

47:3 그 사람이 손에 줄을 잡고 동쪽으로 나아가며 천 척을 측량한 후에 내게 그 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 발목에 오르더니

47:4 다시 천 척을 측량하고 내게 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 무릎에 오르고 다시 천 척을 측량하고 내게 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 허리에 오르고

47:5 다시 천 척을 측량하시니 물이 내가 건너지 못할 강이 된지라 그 물이 가득하여 헤엄칠 만한 물이요 사람이 능히 건너지 못할 강이더라

3 As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. 4 He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. 5 He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross. 6 He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

47:6 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 네가 이것을 보았느냐 하시고 나를 인도하여 강 가로 돌아가게 하시기로

47:7 내가 돌아가니 강 좌우편에 나무가 심히 많더라

47:8 그가 내게 이르시되 이 물이 동쪽으로 향하여 흘러 아라바로 내려가서 바다에 이르리니 이 흘러내리는 물로 그 바다의 물이 되살아나리라

47:9 이 강물이 이르는 곳마다 번성하는 모든 생물이 살고 또 고기가 심히 많으리니 이 물이 흘러 들어가므로 바닷물이 되살아나겠고 이 강이 이르는 각처에 모든 것이 살 것이며

47:10 또 이 강 가에 어부가 설 것이니 엔게디에서부터 에네글라임까지 그물 치는 곳이 될 것이라 그 고기가 각기 종류를 따라 큰 바다의 고기 같이 심히 많으려니와

47:11 그 진펄과 개펄은 되살아나지 못하고 소금 땅이 될 것이며

47:12 강 좌우 가에는 각종 먹을 과실나무가 자라서 그 잎이 시들지 아니하며 열매가 끊이지 아니하고 달마다 새 열매를 맺으리니 그 물이 성소를 통하여 나옴이라 그 열매는 먹을 만하고 그 잎사귀는 약 재료가 되리라

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7 When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. 8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. 9 Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live. 10 Fishermen will stand along the shore; from En Gedi to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. The fish will be of many kinds—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea. 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.”

                솔로몬이 지었던 첫번째 성전, 그 성전의 성소의 남쪽에는 “바다”라고 하는 거대한 놋 그릇이 물로 가득차 있었습니다. 역대하 4:2-6은 그 놋바다를 어떻게 만들었는지 그 바다에 담긴 물의 양은 또 얼마나 되는지, 그리고 그 바다를 만든 목적을 적고 있습니다. 무려 66톤가량의 물이 담긴 놋바다의 물은 제사장들을 씻어 그들을 정결하게 만드는 것이 그 목적이었지요. 그러나 그런 제의적인 의미 말고도 이 놋바다는 하나님의 성전, 즉 하나님의 임재의 질서 안에서 혼돈마저도 하나님께 순종하는 것을 상징하는 장치이기도 합니다. 왜냐하면 고대 근동에서 ‘바다’는 신에게 대적하는 혼돈과 죽음을 상징하는 것이었기 때문입니다. 그런데 그 성전 남쪽에서 물이 나와 흐릅니다. 한 줄기 물줄기에 불과한 이 물은 점점 그 양이 넘쳐나서 모든 것이 죽은 바다, 사해에까지 흐릅니다. 시편 46:4절은 이렇게 말합니다. “한 시내가 있어 나뉘어 흘러 하나님의 성 곧 지존하신 이의 성소를 기쁘게 하도다” 같은 시편의 10절은 “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다” 라는 출애굽기의 말씀을 인용하여 홍해를 가르셨던 하나님의 도움을 기억하게 하지요. 모든 것을 정결하게 하며 모든 죽은 것에게 생명을 주는 물. 모든 혼란과 죽음의 상징인 바다를 덮는 물. 오늘은 “물이 바다 덮음 같이”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction

In Solomon's first temple, on the south side of the sanctuary, stood a massive bronze basin called the "Sea." Second Chronicles 4:2–6 describes how this Bronze Sea was crafted, noting its vast capacity of roughly 66 tons (over 17,000 gallons) of water. Its primary purpose was ritual cleansing—to wash and purify the priests before they ministered.

Beyond its ceremonial function, the Bronze Sea served a profound symbolic purpose within the cosmic order of God's presence. In the Ancient Near East, the "sea" symbolized chaos, disorder, and death that rebelled against God. By placing this captive body of water south of the altar, the sanctuary declared that even chaos itself is brought under God's sovereign command.

Now, in Ezekiel’s vision, water flows out from the south side of the temple. Starting as a tiny, unassuming trickle, this water gradually swells into a deep river that flows all the way down to the Dead Sea—the ultimate symbol of death.

Psalm 46:4 proclaims:

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”

A few verses later, Psalm 46:10 echoes God's command at the Red Sea: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Today, we behold a divine stream that purifies all unholiness, gives life to everything dead, and covers the sea of chaos.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “As the Waters Cover the Sea.”

                먼저는 이 물의 시작을 함께 보기 원합니다. 에스겔이 ‘그 사람’의 인도를 따라 성전 문에 이르니 성전의 문지방 밑에서 물이 흘러 남쪽으로 흐르기 시작합니다. 그 물은 “제단 남쪽으로 흘러내리더라” 라고 적고 있지요. 안뜰 서쪽에는 성소가 있고 안뜰 동문과 바깥뜰 동문은 여호와의 영광이 들어오신 뒤로 굳게 닫혀있습니다. 물은 남쪽으로 흐릅니다. 어디로 가야할까요? 북문이지요. 그래서 2절을 보니 북문을 통해 성전 바깥으로 아예 나가서 바깥길을 통해 동문을 밖에서 마주해보니 그 물이 동문의 오른쪽 즉 남쪽에서 스며 나오더라 라고 전하고 있습니다. 자 “스며나오더라” 무슨 뜻입니까? 지극히 미약하다는 말입니다. 졸졸졸 흐르는 것도 아닙니다. 마치 땀 흘리듯이 스며나오고 있습니다. 그런데 이 물이 천척, 대략 500미터를 동쪽으로 나아가보니 물이 발목에 올랐다고 합니다. 다시 500미터 동쪽으로, 물이 무릎에 오릅니다. 다시 500미터, 물이 허리에 오릅니다. 다시 500미터, 이제는 “그 물이 가득하여…사람이 능히 건너지 못할 강”이 되었습니다. 참으로 이상한 물이지요. 보통 강이 형성되는 과정은 하늘에서 내린 비나 눈이 높은 곳에서 낮은 곳으로 흐르며 여러 작은 물길들, 지류들이 모여 거대한 줄기를 이루는 과정을 통해 이루어집니다. 그런데 이 강은 분명 그 시작은 스며나오는 물이었는데 아무런 다른 지류의 합류 없이도 그 나중에는 사람이 건너지 못할 거대한 강이 되었다는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님께서 일하시는 방식입니다. 스며나오듯이 지극히 미약해보이는 일로부터 시작하여 사람이 어찌할 수 없는 거대한 일을 일이키십니다. 이 세상의 법칙과는 정반대이지요. 그런데 한가지 주목해야 할 부분이 있습니다. 6절입니다. 뜬금없이 ‘그 사람’이 에스겔에게 묻습니다. “인자야 네가 이것을 보았느냐?” 왜 이런 질문을 하는 것일까요? 혹시 전에 같은 질문을 했었을까요? 네 그렇습니다. 8:15, 17절에 예루살렘 파괴의 원인이 되었던 성전 안에서의 우상 숭배와 가증한 일들을 보여주실 때에 같은 질문을 하셨었습니다. 지금 “인자야 네가 이것을 보았느냐?” 라는 질문은 과거에 죄악으로 오염되었던 그 땅이 지금 이 강물로 정결하게 되는 것을 보고 있느냐고 물어보고 계시는 것입니다. 마치 성소 아래의 놋바다의 물이 그들을 정결하게 하였듯이 성소에서 시작된 하나님의 물이 그 모든 땅을 덮으며 정결하게 하신다는 것입니다. 이 물은 정결케 하는 물인 것입니다.

1. The Origin of the Water: A Purifying River (vv. 1–7)

First, let us examine where this water begins. Guided by the heavenly messenger, Ezekiel returns to the entrance of the temple and sees water trickling out from beneath the threshold, flowing toward the south—"from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar" (v. 1).

Because the east gates of the inner and outer courts were permanently shut after the glory of the LORD entered, the guide leads Ezekiel out through the north gate and around to the outside of the outer east gate. There, Ezekiel sees the water trickling from the south side of the gate.

The Hebrew word used here conveys that the water was barely seeping out—not even a gentle stream, but a slow, sweat-like trickle. It appeared completely insignificant.

Yet, as the guide measures out 1,000 cubits (~1,500 feet or 500 meters) to the east, the water reaches Ezekiel's ankles.

• Measuring another 1,000 cubits, the water rises to his knees.

• Measuring another 1,000 cubits, it reaches his waist.

• Measuring another 1,000 cubits, it becomes a river so deep that "no one could cross" (v. 5)—a river deep enough to swim in.

This is a miraculous river. In nature, rivers grow large as tributaries flow into them from surrounding mountains and streams. But this river has no tributaries. Starting as a barely visible trickle from God's sanctuary, it expands solely by divine power into an overwhelming torrent.

This is how God works. He takes what appears small and weak in human eyes and expands it into something beyond human capacity.

In verse 6, the guide asks Ezekiel a poignant question: “Son of man, do you see this?”

Why ask this specific question? God asked Ezekiel the exact same question in Ezekiel 8:15 and 8:17 when exposing the abominable idolatry that led to Jerusalem’s destruction. Now, God asks: “Do you see this? Do you see how the land once defiled by sin is now being cleansed and purified by this river?”

Just as the Bronze Sea purified the priests, this water flowing from the Sanctuary covers and purifies the whole land. It is a river of cleansing.

                두번째, 이 물은 생명을 주는 물입니다. 8절을 보니 “이 물이 동쪽으로 향하여 아라바로 내려가서 바다에 이르리니… 그 바다의 물이 되살아나리라” 라고 말씀하십니다. 자, 이스라엘 서쪽에는 지중해가 있습니다. 그렇다면 동쪽에는 무슨 바다가 있습니까? 바다라고 부르기 민망한 사해가 있지요. 사해, 죽은 바다라는 뜻입니다. 익히 아시는바대로 사해는 원래 바다의 일부였던 지형이 지각변동으로인해 내려앉으면서 그 바닷물이 갇혀버린 일종의 호수와도 같은 바다입니다. 지대가 워낙 낮아서 요단강에서 계속 물이 들어오는데도 연중 기온은 또 높아서 그 유입되는 양만큼의 물이 그대로 증발해버립니다. 남는건 소금과 같은 미네랄 뿐이지요. 그래서 염도가 일반 바다의 4배입니다. 생물이 살 수 있습니까? 없지요. 그래서 죽은 바다, 사해입니다. 그런데 이 바다에 그 흘르는 물이 들어올 때에 그 바다의 물이 되살아난다고 말합니다. 9절, “이 강물이 이르는 곳마다 번성하는 모든 생물이 살고 또 고기가 심히 많으리니” 이 말씀은 하나님의 천지창조를 생각나게 합니다. 창세기 1:20-21절 “물들은 생물을 번성하게 하라,” “물에서 번성하여 움직이는 모든 생물을 그 종류대로” 이 물이 생명의 근원된다는 것입니다. 이 물이 죽은 바다에 닿으면 바닷물이 되살아나고, “이 강이 이르는 각처에서 모든 것이 살 것”이다. 말씀하시지 않습니까? 죽은 것에게 생명을 주시는 것은 환경만이 아닙니다. 그 환경에 살아가는 사람들에게도 생명이 되며 풍요로움이 됩니다. 10절, 이 강가에 어부가 서고 사해 서편의 남쪽, 엔게디부터 북쪽의 에네글라임까지 서쪽 사해 연안전체가 어업이 활성화 됩니다. 모든 것을 죽이던 바다가 생명의 요람이 됩니다. 식량의 보고가 됩니다. 그렇다면 11절은 뭐냐? 물으실 수 있습니다. 거기는 소금땅이라고 하지 않냐? 여러분 당시에 소금은 굉장히 귀한 자원입니다. 그 귀중한 소금의 원천이 되는 진펄과 개펄은 오히려 이들이 소금을 채취할 수 있도록 보호해주시는 것입니다. 물고기와 소금 뿐만이 아니지요. 12절을 보니 강 좌우가에는 각종 먹을 과실나무가 자라서 달마다 열매를 맺는다고 합니다. 그 잎사귀는 약재료가 된다고 합니다. 그 이유가 무엇입니까? 그 물이 성소를 통해 나오기 때문입니다. 이것은 요한계시록 22:1-2에서 말하고 있는 내용과 그대로 일치합니다. “하나님과 및 어린 양의 보좌로부터” 나오는 생명수의 강, 그 강 좌우에 자라난 이 나무들은 바로  생명나무들입니다. 하나님의 성소에서, 어린양의 보좌로부터 흐르는 생명수가 바로 이것인 것입니다.

2. The Destination of the Water: A Life-Giving River (vv. 8–12)

Second, this water is a life-giving stream. Verse 8 declares:

“This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.”

To the west of Israel lay the Mediterranean Sea, but to the east lay the body of water known as the Dead Sea. Geographically, the Dead Sea sits at the lowest elevation on earth. Although the Jordan River continually pours fresh water into it, the extreme heat causes the water to evaporate rapidly, leaving behind dense concentrations of salt and minerals—four times salter than the ocean. No fish or marine life can survive in it. It is literally a dead sea.

Yet, when this holy stream reaches those stagnant, lifeless waters, the Dead Sea is completely healed and restored! Verse 9 echoes the Creation narrative of Genesis 1:20–21:

“Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.”

This divine stream does not merely fix the environment; it brings life and abundance to the people living there:

• Abundant Harvest (v. 10): Fishermen will line the shores from En Gedi to En Eglaim, casting nets over waters swarming with countless varieties of fish. A place of desolation becomes a thriving cradle of life.

• Preserved Resources (v. 11): The swamps and marshes will not become fresh, but will be left for salt. Far from being a flaw, salt was a vital, precious commodity in the ancient world. God thoughtfully preserves these marshlands so His people can harvest salt.

• Continuous Nourishment & Healing (v. 12): Fruit trees of all kinds will line both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. They will bear fresh fruit every month because the water flows directly from the sanctuary. Their fruit will serve as food and their leaves for healing.

This vision perfectly mirrors Revelation 22:1–2, where the river of the water of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb, with the tree of life bearing fruit every month for the healing of the nations.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 우리의 눈에 우리의 신앙은 그저 미약한 스며나오는 물과 같을 수 있습니다. 우리의 눈 앞에 있는 문제들과 혼돈, 죽음의 바다 앞에서 그것은 아무런 변화를 일으킬 수 없는 몇방울의 물처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다. 그러나 그것이 바로 생명수입니다. 이 생명수의 강이 흐를 때에 모든 죄악을 씻으시고 정결케 하십니다. 이 생명수의 강은 하나님을 대적하던 혼돈을 대표하는 죽음의 바다마저 살리는 생명의 근원입니다. 예수님은 요한복음 7:38에서 외치셨습니다. “나를 믿는 자는 성경에 이름과 같이 그 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러나오리라” 겨자씨와 같은 너무나 미약해보이는 여러분의 작은 믿음. 스며나오는 땀방울과 같은 그 연약한 믿음이 생수의 강이 되어 흐를 것입니다. 예수님을 믿으십시오. 그 믿음이 여러분을 정결케하고 여러분을 살게 하실 것입니다. 

Conclusion

In our own eyes, our faith can sometimes feel like a tiny, fragile trickle of water. Standing before the chaotic oceans, daunting problems, and dead seas of this world, our faith might seem far too small to make a difference.

Yet, that small trickle is the very water of life. Wherever this river flows, it washes away sin, restores what is broken, and brings dead places back to life.

Jesus cried out in John 7:38:

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

Your faith—though it may seem as small as a mustard seed or a faint drop of sweat—will swell into a river of living water through Jesus Christ. Place your trust in Him today. His life-giving stream will purify your heart, restore your soul, and make all things new. Amen.
