2 인자야 너는 네 민족에게 말하여 이르라 가령 내가 칼을 한 땅에 임하게 한다 하자 그 땅 백성이 자기들 가운데의 하나를 택하여 파수꾼을 삼은

3 그 사람이 그 땅에 칼이 임함을 보고 나팔을 불어 백성에게 경고하되

4 그들이 나팔 소리를 듣고도 정신차리지 아니하므로 그 임하는 칼에 제거함을 당하면 그 피가 자기의 머리로 돌아갈 것이라

5 그가 경고를 받았던들 자기 생명을 보전하였을 것이나 나팔 소리를 듣고도 경고를 받지 아니하였으니 그 피가 자기에게로 돌아가리라

6 그러나 칼이 임함을 파수꾼이 보고도 나팔을 불지 아니하여 백성에게 경고하지 아니하므로 그 중의 한 사람이 그 임하는 칼에 제거 당하면 그는 자기 죄악으로 말미암아 제거되려니와 그 죄는 내가 파수꾼의 손에서 찾으리라

7 인자야 내가 너를 이스라엘 족속의 파수꾼으로 삼음이 이와 같으니라 그런즉 너는 내 입의 말을 듣고 나를 대신하여 그들에게 경고할지어다

8 가령 내가 악인에게 이르기를 악인아 너는 반드시 죽으리라 하였다 하자 네가 그 악인에게 말로 경고하여 그의 길에서 떠나게 하지 아니하면 그 악인은 자기 죄악으로 말미암아 죽으려니와 내가 그의 피를 네 손에서 찾으리라

9 그러나 너는 악인에게 경고하여 돌이켜 그의 길에서 떠나라고 하되 그가 돌이켜 그의 길에서 떠나지 아니하면 그는 자기 죄악으로 말미암아 죽으려니와 너는 네 생명을 보전하리라

33 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, 3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.

7 “So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.

작년 여름에 저희가 에스겔서 1-24장을 보았는데 그때에는 예루살렘 심판 메시지가 주 내용이었습니다. 그리고 이번에 25-32장까지 보았는데 그 내용은 열방에 대한 심판 메시지가 주된 내용이었지요. 오늘의 말씀은 33장입니다. 하나님께서는 다시 에스겔을 파수꾼으로 부르십니다. 그런데 그 맥락이 처음 에스겔을 파수꾼으로 부르시던  3장에서와 같이 예루살렘의 함락 전이 아닙니다. 33장 21절에 보니 예루살렘의 함락 소식이 들려오기 때문입니다. 이제 에스겔은 예루살렘 멸망이라는 소식 앞에서 절망과 허무주의에 빠진 포로들을 마주하게 됩니다. 바벨론의 포로지에서 사역했던 에스겔, 이제 민족 전체를 향한 심판 선고는 끝이 났습니다. 그에게 맡겨진 사명은 눈앞에 있는 나라 잃은 백성들을 돌보는 것이었습니다. 그들을 위해 하나님께서는 에스겔을 다시 한 번 파수꾼으로 임명하십니다. 마치 파수꾼과 같이 각 개인에게 죄악의 길에서 떠나라고 경고하는 역할을 부여하셨습니다. 그래서 그들이 악인의 길에서 돌이키기를 원하셨습니다. 오늘은 “파수꾼을 세우시는 하나님” 이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction: A New Mission Among the Ruins

Last summer, we studied Ezekiel chapters 1 through 24, where the primary focus was God’s message of judgment against Jerusalem. More recently, in chapters 25 through 32, we looked at His messages of judgment directed at the surrounding nations.

Today, we arrive at chapter 33. Here, God calls Ezekiel once again to serve as a watchman. However, the context of his calling here is quite different from chapter 3, where he was first appointed before the fall of Jerusalem. As we see later in verse 21 of this chapter, the news of Jerusalem’s actual destruction reaches the exiles in Babylon.

Ezekiel now stands before captives who are sinking into deep despair and nihilism after losing their homeland. The period of pronouncing national judgment is over. The mission now entrusted to Ezekiel is to shepherd and care for these displaced, heartbroken individuals. For their sake, God re-appoints Ezekiel as a watchman, giving him the duty to warn every individual to turn away from their sinful paths so that they might be saved. Today, I want to share a message titled: "The God Who Appoints a Watchman."

먼저 하나님께서는 에스겔을 통하여 이스라엘 백성들에게 파수꾼의 원리를 설명하십니다. 2절, “인자야 너는 네 민족에게 말하여 이르라” 라고 말씀하시지요. 이 부분이 우리가 에스겔서 3장에서 보았던 에스겔을 파수꾼으로 임명하시는 말씀과 오늘의 말씀이 차별화되는 부분이지요. 먼저 이스라엘 백성들에게 이들이 이미 겪었었던 전시 상황을 예를 들어 설명하십니다. “가령, 예를 들어, 내가 칼을 한 땅에 임하게 한다 하자” 이 말씀은 파수꾼의 원리를 설명하시는 부분이기도 하지만 “내가 칼을 한 땅에 임하게 한다” 는 말씀으로 그들이 경험하였던 예루살렘의 몰락이 바벨론 제국에 의한 것이 아니라 하나님께서 그들의 죄악을 심판하신 것임을 알려주시는 장면이기도 합니다. 자, 다시 파수꾼의 원리로 돌아가겠습니다. “그 땅 백성이” 한 사람을 택하여 파수꾼을 삼습니다. 파수꾼의 임무는 간단합니다. 3절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “그 사람이 그 땅에 칼이 임함을 보고 나팔을 불어 백성에게 경고하되” 동사가 세 개 나옵니다. 보고, 불어, 경고한다. 간결하고 구체적입니다. 파수꾼의 임무가 정확히 무엇인지를 설명하여 그 파수꾼의 경고가 무엇을 의미하는 것인지 다시 한 번 확인시키십니다. 

1. The Principle of the Watchman

First, God uses Ezekiel to explain the fundamental principle of a watchman to the people of Israel. In verse 2, He says:

“Son of man, speak to your people...”

This marks a key distinction between today's text and his initial appointment back in chapter 3. Here, God uses a wartime situation that the people had personally lived through as an illustration: "Suppose I bring the sword against a land..."

This illustration serves a dual purpose. While explaining how a watchman operates, the phrase "I bring the sword against a land" gently reminds the exiles that the fall of Jerusalem was not simply the result of Babylonian military conquest, but God’s righteous judgment upon their sins.

God then outlines the duty of a watchman: "and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman..." The watchman’s responsibility is simple and clear, as described in verse 3:

“...he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people...”

Notice the three active verbs here: he sees, he blows, and he warns. The duty is concise and concrete. By defining the watchman’s task so clearly, God establishes the grave weight of the warning itself.

4-5절은 경고를 받는 사람들이 어떻게 해야 하는지를 알려 주십니다. 4절, 파수꾼의 경고를 듣고 정신을 차리지 않으면 그 칼에 죽임을 당하고 그 책임은 온전히 경고를 듣지 않은 사람들의 몫입니다. 이것은 앞서 파수꾼의 역할이 정확히 무엇인지 규정되었기 때문에 모두가 동의할 수 있는 설명이지요. 그래서 5절 말씀은 그 경고를 받았을 경우도 말씀하십니다. 경고를 받고 정신을 차렸다면 자기 생명을 보전하였을 것이라고 말이지요. 그리고 다시 한 번, 파수꾼의 경고를 듣지 않으면 어떤 결과가 있을지에 대해서 확인시키십니다. 

2. The Responsibility of the Hearers

Verses 4 and 5 address the responsibility of those who hear the warning. Verse 4 explains that if anyone hears the sound of the trumpet but ignores the warning, and the sword comes and takes them away, their blood will be on their own head. Because the watchman’s role has been clearly established, everyone can agree that the listener bears full responsibility for neglecting the signal.

In verse 5, God presents the alternative:

“Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but did not heed the warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had heeded the warning, he would have saved himself.”

If a person takes the warning to heart, their life is spared. Once again, God reinforces that if anyone chooses to ignore the warning, they must face the tragic consequences of their own choice.

자 6절은 “그러나”로 시작합니다. 이번에는 파수꾼의 책임입니다. 파수꾼이 “보고, 불어, 경고하지 않으면” 그래서 그중에 한 사람이라도 칼에 죽임을 당한다면 그 죄는 하나님께서 파수꾼에게 찾으시겠다고 말씀하십니다. 파수꾼 또한 자신의 임무에 대한 책임이 있다는 것이지요. 하지만 재미있는 것은 그렇게 죽임을 당한 사람은 파수꾼 때문에 죽은 것이 아니라 “그는 자기 죄악으로 말미암아 제거”된 것이라고 말씀하십니다. 즉, 이들은 원래 죽을 죄에 빠진 사람들입니다. 파수꾼이 경고하지 않아서 그들이 죽게 된다고 할지라도, 그들은 자신들이 지은 죄 때문에 죽는다는 것입니다. 

3. The Responsibility of the Watchman

Verse 6 begins with a vital transition word: "But..." Here, God turns His attention to the responsibility of the watchman himself:

“But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes one of their lives, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.”

If the watchman fails to see, blow, and warn, God will hold the watchman accountable for any life lost. The watchman bears a heavy responsibility for his assignment.

Yet, notice a profound detail in this verse: God specifies that the victim "is taken away because of his sin." In other words, those who perish were already guilty and under judgment because of their own wickedness. Even if the watchman neglects his duty, those who die still perish as a result of their own sin.

여기에 오늘 말씀의 핵심이 있습니다. 그들은 원래 심판을 받아 하나님의 칼에 다 죽을 사람들이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그들에게 파수꾼을 세우십니다. 어차피 죽을 사람들인데 파수꾼을 왜 세우시는 것입니까? 파수꾼을 통해 그들에게 경고하심으로 그들로 그 죄악의 길에서 돌이켜 자기 생명을 보전하게 하기 위함입니다. 그리고 심지어 파수꾼에게는 그 일을 게을리하지 않도록 그중 한 사람이라도 잃게 된다면 그 죄를 파수꾼에게 찾으시겠다고 하십니다. 이미 죽음에 이를 만큼 하나님께 범죄한 사람들인데도 말입니다. 이것이 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들에게 말씀하신 파수꾼의 원리입니다. 죽어야 할 사람들이 파수꾼의 경고를 들으면 살 수 있다는 말씀입니다.

4. The Heart of God Behind the Watchman

Here lies the absolute core of today’s passage. The people were already destined to perish under the sword of God's righteous judgment. Why, then, would God appoint a watchman for people who were already condemned?

It is because God wanted to warn them through the watchman so that they might turn from their sinful ways and preserve their lives! To ensure that the watchman would not grow lazy or negligent, God placed the heavy burden of accountability upon him—declaring that if even a single person was lost without warning, the watchman would answer for it.

Even though these people had sinned so deeply that they deserved death, God opened a way for them to live if they heard and heeded the watchman’s call.

그리고 하나님께서는 7절에서 에스겔에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “인자야 내가 너를 이스라엘 족속의 파수꾼으로 삼음이 이와 같으니라” 하나님께서 이스라엘을 향한 당신의 마음을 다 쏟아놓으셨습니다. 그리고 에스겔을 그 파수꾼으로 세우셨습니다. 그리고 말씀하십니다. “그런즉, 너는 내 입의 말을 듣고 나를 대신하여 그들에게 경고할지어다.” 이 경고가 어떤 말씀입니까? 생명의 말씀입니다. 그 경고를 듣고 돌이키면 살 수 있습니다. 8-9절은 앞에서 설명했던 원리를 구체적인 예를 들어 다시 설명하십니다. 이번에는 그 대상이 악인입니다. 8절에서 악인에게 경고하지 않아서 그가 그 길에서 떠나지 않는다면 그는 자기 죄악으로 말미암아 죽을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 파수꾼에게 그 죽음의 책임을 물으실 것입니다. 9절 그러나 파수꾼의 역할을 잘 감당한다면 그런데도 불구하고 악인이 그 말씀을 듣지 않는다면 그는 자기 죄악으로 인하여 죽겠지만 파수꾼은 그 생명을 보전하게 될 것입니다. 

5. Ezekiel’s Appointment and Mission

In verse 7, God applies this principle directly to Ezekiel:

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.”

Here, God reveals His deep, burning heart for Israel. He appoints Ezekiel to stand in the gap and commands him to deliver His message. This warning is not a sentence of condemnation; it is a word of life! If they listen and turn back, they will live.

Verses 8 and 9 illustrate this principle with a concrete example involving a wicked person:

• In verse 8: If God says to the wicked, "You wicked person, you will surely die," and Ezekiel fails to warn them to turn from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, but God will hold Ezekiel accountable for their blood.

• In verse 9: If Ezekiel faithfully delivers the warning and the wicked person still refuses to turn, that wicked person will die for their sin, but Ezekiel will have saved his own life.

말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님께서는 파수꾼을 세우시는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 이들에게 설명하시고 에스겔을 파수꾼으로 세우셨습니다. 파수꾼의 경고를 통해 죽음이 확정된 악인들에게 살 길을 여셨습니다. 그런데 한 가지 의문이 생깁니다. 파수꾼은 이 임무를 맡음으로써 무슨 이득이 있는가? 임무를 실패하면 어차피 죽어야 할 악인이 죽는 대신 자기 목숨이 위태롭습니다. 임무를 성공한다고 할지라도 자신에게 돌아오는 이득은 없습니다. 그저 악인이 그 생명을 보전할 뿐입니다. 그런데 여기에 하나님의 마음이 있습니다. 하나님께는 그 악인 한 사람조차 돌아오기를 원하신다는 것입니다. 그리고 파수꾼으로 세움받은 자는 하나님의 이 마음을 아는 자여야 한다는 것입니다. 사랑하는 여러분, 파수꾼을 세우시는 하나님의 마음을 품으시기를 바랍니다. 그래서 하나님과 같은 마음으로 파수꾼 되시어 그 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀을 전하시는 자 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion: Embracing the Heart of the Watchman

Let us conclude. God explained the principle of a watchman to His people and set Ezekiel in that vital post. Through the warning of a watchman, God provided a pathway to life for condemned sinners.

Yet this raises an important question: What does the watchman stand to gain from taking on this difficult assignment?

• If he fails, he risks his own life for a sinner who was already condemned.

• Even if he succeeds, he receives no personal reward or glory—the sinner simply gets to live.

Where, then, is the gain? It lies entirely in the heart of God. God’s heart desires that not even a single wicked person should perish, but that all should turn from their sin and live. Anyone called to be a watchman must know and share this very heart of God.

My beloved brothers and sisters, I pray that you will embrace the heart of God, who appoints watchmen for the lost. May you stand as faithful watchmen today—eagerly hearing His Word, sharing His love, and proclaiming His truth to the world.
