2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—

    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,

    from east and west, from north and south.

    finding no way to a city where they could settle.

5 They were hungry and thirsty,

    and their lives ebbed away.

6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,

    and he delivered them from their distress.

7 He led them by a straight way

    to a city where they could settle.

8 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love

    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,

9 for he satisfies the thirsty

    and fills the hungry with good things.

10 Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness,

    prisoners suffering in iron chains,

11 because they rebelled against God’s commands

    and despised the plans of the Most High.

12 So he subjected them to bitter labor;

    they stumbled, and there was no one to help.

13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,

    and he saved them from their distress.

14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,

    and broke away their chains.

15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love

    and his wonderful deeds for mankind,

16 for he breaks down gates of bronze

    and cuts through bars of iron.

17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways

    and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.

18 They loathed all food

    and drew near the gates of death.

19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,

    and he saved them from their distress.

20 He sent out his word and healed them;

    he rescued them from the grave.

21 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love

    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings

    and tell of his works with songs of joy.

사사기의 이야기는 반복적인 사이클이 있습니다. 그것은 이스라엘 백성이 교만하여 하나님을 버리고 범죄하면, 하나님은 주변의 이방인들을 들어 그들을 심판하십니다. 고통에 빠진 이스라엘이 정신을 차리고 겸손하게 회개하고 부르짖으면, 하나님은 그들을 용서하시고 구원하십니다. 그러면 그들은 구원을 감사하는 찬송을 하나님께 드립니다. 이를 간단하게 정리하면 다음과 같습니다.

교만 (범죄) – 고통 (심판) – 부르짖음 (회개) – 겸손, 감사 (구원)

그런데 이 패턴이 우리의 삶에서도 고스란히 드러난다는 것입니다. 그리고 오늘 시편에서도 이 패턴을 발견할 수 있습니다. 우리는 평안하고 일이 잘 풀리면 나도 모르게 교만해 집니다. 그러다가 하나님이 고통을 주시면 깨닫고 부르짖어 회개합니다. 그러면 하나님이 구원하시고, 우리는 감사의 찬송을 드리며 겸손한 마음을 당분간 유지합니다. 우리가 범죄하지 않으면 좋겠지만, 죄성을 가진 인생은 언젠가 또 범죄하고 실족합니다. 그럴 때 필요한 것이 부르짖는 기도입니다. 오늘 시편기자가 반복적으로 노래하는 것이 고통과 부르짖다, 그리고 구원과 감사 찬송입니다.

The stories in the Book of Judges follow a recurring cycle. When the people of Israel grow arrogant, forsake God, and sin, God uses the surrounding Gentile nations to judge them. Plunged into suffering, Israel comes to their senses, humbly repents, and cries out to God. God then forgives and saves them, leading them to offer hymns of thanksgiving for His salvation.  

This can be summarized simply as follows:  

This very pattern mirrors our own lives, and it is precisely what we discover in today's Psalm. When we are at peace and things are going smoothly, we inadvertently become proud. But when God allows suffering, we realize our state, cry out, and repent. God then delivers us, and we offer songs of thanksgiving, maintaining a humble heart—at least for a while.  

While it would be ideal if we never sinned, human beings possess a sinful nature and will inevitably fall and stumble again at some point. What we need in those moments is the prayer of crying out. The themes that the Psalmist repeatedly sings about today are suffering, crying out, salvation, and songs of thanksgiving.  

여호와의 선하심과 인자하심을 찬양하라 (1~3절)

107편은 시편 5권의 시작으로 4권과 5권을 연결해주는 역할을 합니다. 105편부터 107편은 3편의 시리즈입니다. 105편은 106편(& 78편)과 함께 역사시입니다. 105편은 하나님이 이스라엘을 어떻게 대하셨는지 대해서 노래하는 반면에, 106은 이스라엘이 하나님을 어떻게 대했는지에 대한 시편으로 짝을 이루며, 107편은 106편과 마찬가지로 “여호와께 감사하라”로 시작하면서 짝을 이룹니다.

이 시편의 주제는 반복하여 후렴처럼 등장하는 구절(1, 8, 15, 21, 31절)로 여호와의 인자하심을 찬양하라 입니다. 신학적으로 하나님의 완전하신 속성 가운데 하나가 완전하신 인자와 선하심(헤세드)입니다. 인자하시고 선하신데 그것이 완전한 선함과 인자하심입니다.

그러므로 나의 어려움이나 고난, 환경에 상관없이 그 분은 선하신 하나님이십니다. 이것은 고난 가운데 인생을 버틸 수 있는 힘의 근원이 됩니다. 이유를 알 수 없는 고난 가운데, 고난이 아닌 하나님의 선하신 성품을 묵상할 때 우리의 모든 의구심이 사라지고 선하신 하나님을 경험하게 될 것입니다.

일반적으로 본 시편은 바벨론 포로기에서 귀환을 기념하며 쓴 감사의 시로 봅니다. 본시의 서론에 해당하는 1~3절에서 시인은 70년간의 포로생활을 마치고 다시 예루살렘으로 당신의 백성을 불러모으신, 대적의 손에서 구원하신 하나님의 기이하신 구속(히 “가알”, 무르다, 배상하다)에 대해 노래하고 있습니다. 결국 선하신 하나님께서 당신의 때에 선하심을 행하시는 분입니다. 이것을 믿고 기다리고 찬송해야 합니다.

1. Praise the Goodness and Lovingkindness of the LORD (Verses 1–3)   

Psalm 107 marks the beginning of Book 5 of the Psalms, serving as a bridge between Book 4 and Book 5. Psalms 105 through 107 form a three-part series. Along with Psalm 106 (and Psalm 78), Psalm 105 is a historical psalm.  

While Psalm 105 sings of how God treated Israel, Psalm 106 pairs with it by showing how Israel treated God. Psalm 107 completes the pair by opening with the same phrase as Psalm 106: "Give thanks to the LORD."   

The overarching theme of this Psalm, appearing repeatedly like a refrain (in verses 1, 8, 15, 21, and 31), is "Praise the lovingkindness of the LORD."   

Theologically, one of God’s absolute attributes is His perfect lovingkindness and goodness (Hesed). He is loving and good, and that goodness and love are entirely perfect. Therefore, regardless of our difficulties, hardships, or circumstances, He is still a good God. This truth becomes the source of strength that allows humans to endure in times of affliction. When we face suffering of unknown origins, focusing on God's good character rather than the suffering itself will cause our doubts to vanish, allowing us to experience the good God.  

Generally, this Psalm is viewed as a song of thanksgiving written to commemorate the return from the Babylonian exile. In the introduction (verses 1–3), the Psalmist sings of God’s wondrous redemption (Hebrew: Ga'al, meaning to redeem or buy back). He brought His people back to Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity, saving them from the hand of the enemy. Ultimately, our good God acts in goodness according to His perfect timing. We must believe this, wait upon Him, and praise Him.  

고통, 환난, 근심 중에는 부르짖어야 합니다 (4~22절)

시인은 네 가지 종류의 고통에서 구원하시는 하나님을 노래합니다. 

첫번째로는 광야에서 구원하시는 하나님이십니다(4~9절). 광야는 유진 피터슨 목사의 말처럼 숨막히도록 아름다운 곳인 동시에 곳곳에 위험이 도사린 무서운 곳입니다. 특히 마실 물이 없는 광야, 사막은 죽음과 다름없는 곳입니다. 우리는 종종 삶에서 광야와 같은 시간을 보낼 때가 있습니다. 숨이 턱턱 막히고, 잡아 삼킬 듯한 열기로 피곤한 인생이, 쉼을 얻을 성읍이 없는 상황입니다. 이런 상황에서 우리는 무엇을 해야할까요? 그렇습니다. 부르짖어야 합니다. 부르짖는 것은 간절하게 우리의 상태를 하나님께 아뢰고, 이러한 상황에서 우리를 구원하실 분은 하나님 한 분 밖에 없음을 고백하는 것입니다.

이렇게 부르짖으면 어떤 일이 벌어질까요? 시인은 우리가 이렇게 부르짖을 때 하나님은 우리를 고통에서 건지시고, 바른 길로 인도하사 거주할 성읍, 피난처에 이르게 하실 것이라 약속합니다(6).

두번째는 흑암과 사망의 그늘에서 구원하시는 하나님이십니다(10~16절).

시인은 인생에 드리운 어두움과 사망의 이유를 설명합니다. 그것은 하나님의 말씀을 거역하며 지존자의 뜻을 멸시했기 때문입니다(11). 우리가 당하는 대부분의 고난의 이유는 하나님이 아닌 우리 자신 때문임을 알아야 합니다. 그리고 그렇게 자녀인 우리에게 고난을 허락하시는 이유는 우리의 마음을 겸손하게 하여 다시 하나님께로 돌아오게 하기 위함입니다(12). 마음을 겸손하게 하고, 회개하며 부르짖으면 하나님은 우리를 구원하십니다. 죽음과 같은 위기에서 우리를 구원하시는 하나님이십니다.

세번째는 질병의 고통에서 구원하시는 하나님이십니다(17~22절).

모든 질병이 그런 것은 아니지만 어떤 질병은 우리의 범죄함 때문에 발병합니다. 근원적으로 병은 아담의 범죄함으로 인생 가운데 들어왔습니다. 사망의 문 앞에서 여호와 하나님께 부르짖으면 하나님께서는 질병의 고통에서 우리를 건지십니다(20). 그러므로 우리는 고통 중에는 원망과 불평이 아닌 부르짖어 기도해야 합니다.

2. We Must Cry Out in Times of Suffering, Trouble, and Anxiety (Verses 4–22)   

The Psalmist sings of a God who delivers us from four specific types of suffering:  

• First, He is the God who delivers us from the wilderness (Verses 4–9). As Pastor Eugene Peterson noted, the wilderness is a place of breathtaking beauty, yet it is also a terrifying place where dangers lurk at every turn. A desert wilderness without drinking water is synonymous with death. We often face wilderness seasons in our lives —moments where we feel suffocated, exhausted by scorching heat, and left without a city or refuge to rest in. What should we do in such times? We must cry out. Crying out means desperately bringing our condition before God and confessing that He is the only one who can save us. When we do this, the Psalmist promises that God will deliver us from our distress and guide us on a straight path to an inhabited city, a place of refuge (Verse 6).  

• Second, He is the God who delivers us from darkness and the shadow of death (Verses 10–16). The Psalmist explains that darkness and the shadow of death loom over life because people "rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High" (Verse 11). We must realize that most of the suffering we face stems from ourselves, not God. God allows this suffering to come upon us as His children to humble our hearts so that we will return to Him (Verse 12). When we humble our hearts, repent, and cry out, God saves us from the brink of death.  

• Third, He is the God who delivers us from the pain of sickness (Verses 17–22). While not all illnesses are directly tied to personal sin, certain sicknesses do arise from our transgressions. Fundamentally, illness entered human existence through the sin of Adam. Yet, if we cry out to the LORD God at the very gates of death, He delivers us from the distress of our illnesses (Verse 20). Therefore, in times of suffering, we must pray by crying out instead of complaining and grumbling.  

우리가 부를짖을 때 하나님은 두 가지를 약속 하셨습니다.

첫번째는 사모하는 영혼에게 만족을 주시고, 주린 영혼에게 좋은 것으로 채워주실 것입니다(9).

믿습니까? 오직 우리에게 구원을 주시는 하나님을 사모해야 합니다. 그러면 하나님은 우리 영혼을 가장 좋은 것으로 채워주십니다. 그것이 무엇일까요? 보혜사 성령입니다. 부르짖어 성령이 충만한 자는 모든 것을 가진 자입니다.

두번째는 그의 말씀을 보내어 우리를 고치시고 위험한 지경에서 건지실 것입니다(20).

그의 말씀은 위로의 말씀이고, 훈계의 말씀입니다. 하지만 궁극적으로 그의 말씀은 말씀이 육신이 되신 예수 그리스도입니다. 고통 중에 부르짖는 자는 예수를 만나게 됩니다. 그리고 예수를 만난 자는 구원을 얻는 자입니다.

이렇게 부르짖어 하나님의 구원을 얻은 자가 해야 할 최종의 것은 무엇일까요? 그렇습니다. 바로 하나님이 나를 위해 행하신 모든 것으로 인하여 감사의 찬송을 드리는 것입니다. 그분의 선하심과 인자하심을 찬양하는 것입니다.

주신 은혜를 유지하는 비결은 감사입니다. 주신 고통을 벗어나는 비결은 부르짖음입니다.

부르짖음과 감사를 놓치지 않을 때 우리는 하나님의 구원의 기쁨을 매일매일 누릴 수 있습니다. 

감사와 찬송으로 하나님이 주신 은혜를 오늘도 누리는 사랑하는 한사랑 성도 되시기를 바랍니다.

When we cry out, God gives us two distinct promises:  

1. He will satisfy the longing soul and fill the hungry soul with good things (Verse 9). Do you believe this? We must long solely for the God who grants us salvation. When we do, He fills our souls with the absolute best thing—the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. Anyone who cries out and is filled with the Holy Spirit possesses everything.  

2. He will send His word to heal us and deliver us from our destructions (Verse 20). His word brings comfort and instruction. Ultimately, however, His Word is Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Those who cry out in the midst of suffering will encounter Jesus, and those who encounter Jesus receive salvation.  

What is the final response expected of those who have received God's salvation through crying out? It is to offer songs of thanksgiving for everything He has done for us, praising His goodness and lovingkindness.  

The secret to sustaining the grace we have received is thanksgiving. The secret to escaping the suffering we face is crying out. When we grasp both crying out and thanksgiving, we can enjoy the joy of God's salvation every single day.
