12:12 몸은 하나인데 많은 지체가 있고 몸의 지체가 많으나 한 몸임과 같이 그리스도도 그러하니라

12:13 우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유자나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었고 또 다 한 성령을 마시게 하셨느니라

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

어제 본문에서 사도 바울은 한 분 성령님이 주시는 다양한 은사에 대해 말했습니다. 은사가 다양한 이유는 그리스도의 몸을 이루는 각 지체가 다양하기 때문이죠. 오늘은 한 몸 안에 있는 다양한 지체가 어떻게 유기적으로 한 몸을 이룰 수 있는지 그 원리를 알려줍니다. 당연히 우리는 모두 서로 다른 환경에서 자람에 따라 다양한 경험을 가지고 있습니다. 그런 다양한 사람들이 한 교회의 구성원으로서 그리스도 안에서 유기적으로 한 몸을 이루기는 쉽지 않습니다. 고린도 교회가 겪은 다툼과 분열의 문제를 극복하는 해법을 함께 들여다보길 원합니다.

In yesterday’s passage, the Apostle Paul spoke about the various spiritual gifts given by the one Holy Spirit. The reason these gifts are diverse is because the members that make up the body of Christ are themselves diverse. Today, we will look at the principle of how these different members within one body can come together and function as one unified body. Naturally, we all come from different backgrounds and have a wide range of life experiences. Because of this, it is not easy for such diverse individuals to come together as members of one church and form one body in Christ. We want to examine the solution to the conflicts and divisions that the Corinthian church experienced.

다양한 지체들이 유기적으로 한 몸을 이룰 수 있는 첫 번째 원리는 ‘우리가 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었다’는 사실입니다. 에베소서의 말씀에 따라 예수님은 교회의 머리되시고 교회는 그리스도의 몸입니다 (엡 1:22-23). 우리는 오직 그리스도의 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았습니다. 그러므로 받게 된 선물인 성령님을 모시는 우리 각 개인이 다 하나님의 성전인 것을 우리는 앞선 고린도전서 3장에서 배웠습니다. 그러므로 누가 더 잘났다고 할 수 없이 예수님 아래에 다 같이 동등하고 존귀하고 소중한 존재입니다. 계급장 다 떼고 동등하게 같은 주를 섬기는 곳, 그곳이 교회인 것 입니다.

거기다가 더하여 에베소서 2장을 보면 사도 바울은 성도들이 예수 그리스도 안에서 하나로 연결되어 성령이 거하시는 거룩한 성전으로 함께 지어져 감을 우리에게 알려줍니다. “그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고 너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라” (엡 2:21-22). 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었고 또 다 한 성령을 마신 우리는 교회라는 공동체에 꼭 소속되어야 합니다. 이것이 교회를 다니지 않고 온라인 예배 만으로 참된 그리스도인으로서 성장하기에 어려움이 있는 부분입니다. 신앙은 혼자가 아니라 성령 안에서 서로 협력하며 성장해 나가는 과정입니다. 이것이 가능한 유일한 이유는 우리가 예수 그리스도 안에서 성령을 받았기 때문에 그 주를 함께 섬긴다는 단단한 믿음과 신념 하에 이루어집니다.

The first principle that enables diverse members to form one unified body is this: we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. According to Ephesians, Jesus is the head of the church, and the church is His body (Eph. 1:22–23). We have been saved by grace alone, through faith in Christ. Therefore, as we learned earlier in 1 Corinthians 3, each of us who has received the gift of the Holy Spirit is individually God’s temple. Therefore, no one can claim to be better than another; under Jesus, we are all equal, honorable, and precious. The church is the place where all status is laid aside, and we serve the same Lord together as equals.

Furthermore, in Ephesians 2, Paul explains that believers are being joined together in Christ and built into a holy temple where the Spirit dwells: “In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit” (Eph. 2:21–22). Since we have been baptized by one Spirit into one body and have all been given the same Spirit to drink, we must belong to the community of the church. This is why it is difficult to grow as a true Christian through online worship alone without being part of a church. Faith is not meant to be lived alone, but is a process of growing together in cooperation within the Spirit. This is only possible because we have received the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ, and we share a firm faith and conviction to serve the same Lord together.

다양한 지체들이 유기적으로 한 몸을 이룰 수 있는 두 번째 원리는 바로 우리가 한 몸에 붙어 있는 존재들이기 때문입니다. 몸의 각 지체는 분리될 수 없습니다. 한 사람의 육체가 한 몸을 이룸에 있어서 각 지체들은 서로 다르며 그 기능과 역할도 다 다르죠. 그리하여 15절과 16절의 비유를 들어보면 재미있습니다. 우리말 성경으로 읽어보면 “만일 발이 “나는 손이 아니니 몸에 속하지 않았다”라고 말한다 할지라도 발이 몸에 속하지 않은 것이 아닙니다. 또 귀가 말하기를 “나는 눈이 아니니 몸에 속하지 않았다”라고 말한다 할지라도 귀가 몸에 속하지 않은 것이 아닙니다” (고전 12:15-16). 이 비유에서 사도 바울은 서로 다른 모습의 지체들이 서로 갈등하고 분리되려고 애쓸지라도 결국 몸에서 분리될 수 없는 현실을 우리에게 알려주고 있습니다. 발과 손은 서로 다릅니다. 귀와 눈도 마찬가지입니다. 그렇다고 해서 이들을 떼어 낸다면 온전한 한 육체를 이룰 수 없을 것 입니다.

The second principle that allows diverse members to form one body is that we belong to one body and cannot be separated from it. Each part of the body cannot exist independently. Just as a human body is one, its parts are all different, with distinct functions and roles. Paul illustrates this in verses 15 and 16: “If the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body” (1 Cor. 12:15–16). Through this analogy, Paul teaches that even if different members experience conflict or attempt to separate themselves, they cannot ultimately detach from the body. The foot and the hand are different, and so are the ear and the eye. But if any of these parts were removed, the body would no longer be whole.

그리고 이러한 다양성을 가진 지체들이 있어야지만 온전한 한 몸을 이룰 수 있음을 우리는 알 수 있습니다. 17절에 온몸이 눈이면 듣지를 못할 것이고, 온몸이 귀라면 코의 역할을 할 수 없음을 비유적으로 표현합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 일을 하기 위해서 교회 공동체의 수많은 지체가 서로 연결되어 각자의 역할을 맡은 위치에서 하고 있는 것입니다. 어느 하나 덜 중요한 일 없고 더 중요한 일 없이 각자 맡겨진 자리에서 필요한 역할을 감당하는 것이 하나님의 나라를 세우는 우리의 자세여야 할 것입니다.

We also see that only through this diversity can the body become complete. Verse 17 explains that if the whole body were an eye, it could not hear; if it were all ear, it could not smell. In the same way, for God’s work to be accomplished, many members within the church must be connected, each carrying out their role in their assigned place. No role is less important or more important than another. Each person must faithfully fulfill the role entrusted to them. This is the posture we must have as we build the kingdom of God.

우리는 각각 다르지만 결코 분리될 수 없는 한 몸의 지체들입니다. 하나님께서는 이 다양한 지체들을 통해 교회를 세워가십니다. 그러므로 우리는 서로의 다름을 인정하고 공동체를 사모함으로, 예수 그리스도 안에서 함께 지어져 가는 하나님의 성전이 되어야 할 것입니다.

We are all different, yet we are members of one body that can never be separated. God builds His church through these diverse members. Therefore, as we recognize and embrace our differences and long for the community of the church, we must become a holy temple of God, being built together in Jesus Christ.
