13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love.

15 You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the Lord’s people. I urge you, brothers and sisters, 16 to submit to such people and to everyone who joins in the work and labors at it. 17 I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. 18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.

19 The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house. 20 All the brothers and sisters here send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

21 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand.

22 If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed! Come, Lord!

23 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.

24 My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.

어떤 일이든 무엇인가 이루어지고 누군가에게 혜택을 주기 위해서는 그 일을 위해 보이지 않게 희생하는 누군가가 있어야 합니다. 이 진리는 동서고금을 막론하고 적용되는 원리입니다. 가정이든 교회이든 회사이든 나라든 누군가의 섬김과 희생이 있어야 합니다.

우리나라는 의료보험이 좋기로 소문이 났습니다. 미국은 여전히 비싼 의료 서비스 때문에 병원에 가는 것이 많은 부담이 되는 것이 현실입니다. 사실 요즘 한국도 점점 어려워진다는 이야기가 들려옵니다만 그래도 아직은 어떤 나라에 비해서도 훌륭한 것이 사실입니다.

이렇게 되기까지는 장기려 박사님의 자기 희생적인 섬김이 있었습니다. 그는 1968년 우리나라에 국가 의료보험이 생기기도 전에 청십자의료보험조합을 설립하여 운영을 하다가, 그 경영이 흑자로 돌아서는 순간에 의료보험조합을 나라에 기증했습니다. 그것이 오늘날 한국 의료보험의 시초가 된 것입니다. 이처럼 누군가의 보이지 않는 희생이 있어야 무엇인가가 이루어지는 것입니다.  

For anything to be accomplished and for anyone to benefit, there must always be someone who unseenly sacrifices for that cause. This is a universal truth that applies across all times and cultures. Whether it is a home, a church, a company, or a nation, someone’s service and sacrifice are required.  

South Korea is well-known for its excellent medical insurance system. In contrast, the reality in the United States is that going to the hospital remains a significant financial burden due to expensive medical services. In fact, word has been spreading recently that things are getting increasingly difficult in Korea as well, but it remains true that its system is still wonderful compared to any other country.  

To reach this point, there was the self-sacrificing service of Dr. Chang Kee-ryo. In 1968, long before a national health insurance system even existed in South Korea, he established and operated the Blue Cross Medical Insurance Cooperative. The moment the management turned a profit, he donated the cooperative to the nation. This became the origin of today's Korean medical insurance. Likewise, something is only accomplished when there is someone's unseen sacrifice.  

알아주라 (13~18절)

초대교회도 마찬가지로 열정과 비전, 예수님에 대한 사랑이 있는 개인의 섬김과 희생으로 이루어졌습니다. 고린도전서 마지막 결론 부분에 그러한 자들의 이름이 등장합니다. 바울에게 고린도교회의 문제를 들고 찾아간 대표단의 대표격인 스데바나의 집이 아가야, 곧 그리스 남부지역의 첫번째 성도가 되었습니다(15a).

또한 아굴라와 브리스가의 집 역시 교회였습니다(19b). 그리고 사도행전 16장 빌립보 지역 선교 때 등장하는 루디아의 집 역시 유럽의 첫번째 교회가 되어 복음의 전초기지가 되었던 것을 알 수 있습니다.

이 모든 초대 교회의 공통점은 개인의 가정을 하나님의 교회로 헌신했다는 사실입니다.

바울은 마지막으로 간결하게 권면합니다.

깨어 믿음에 굳게 서서 남자답게 강건하라 너희 모든 일을 사랑으로 행하라(13~14)

이것은 스데바나, 아굴라와 브리스가, 루디아와 같은 자들의 특성이라고 할 수 있습니다. 깨어라는 바울의 권면이 다분히 종말론적인 교훈이라는 것을 알려주는 것입니다. 마지막 때에는 졸고, 자고 있을 틈이 없습니다. 정신 차리고 깨어 주의 일을 감당해야 합니다.

믿음에 굳게 서라에서 믿음은 바울이 전한 바 바로 그 복음을 의미합니다. 게바, 바울, 아볼로 위에 세워진 믿음이 아닌 예수 그리스도 위에 세워진 믿음을 의미합니다.

남자답게 강건하라는 성차별적인 발언이 아닙니다. 연약함을 벗어나 성숙하라는 의미입니다.

사랑으로 행하라는 고린도전서를 관통하는 핵심 단어로 오늘 본문에서도 세번이나 등장합니다. 선교를 하든, 구제를 하든, 예배를 하든 예수님의 사랑으로 행할 때 의미가 있음은 이미 13장에서 이야기했습니다.

바울은 자신을 찾아온 대표단인 스데바나, 브드나도, 아가이고가 자신의 마음을 기쁘게 해주었다고 말합니다(17). 스데바나는 화관, 면류관이라는 의미로 바울에게 그의 온 가족이 세례 받았습니다(1:16).

그는 고린도 지역의 첫 신자로 교회와 성도들을 위하여 헌신하고 봉사하는 장로였습니다.

브드나도, 아가이고는 이곳 외에는 성경 어디에도 등장하지 않습니다.

학자들은 아마도 스데바나의 가족이거나 노예출신일 것으로 추측하고 있습니다.

바울은 고린도 교인들에게 바로 이러한 자들에게 순종할 것을 당부합니다(16). 이러한 자들이란 바울과 고린도 성도들의 마음을 시원하게 해주는 자들입니다. 그러므로 이러한 자들의 수고를 알아주라(18)고 명령합니다.

요즘 우리교회에는 VBS 준비로 수고하는 성도들이 있습니다. 우리는 이러한 자들에게 무슨 도움이 필요한지 물어야 합니다. 그리고 그들의 수고를 알아주고 격려해주어야 합니다. 이것은 하나님의 명령입니다.

Recognize Them (Verses 13–18)

The early church was similarly built on the personal service and sacrifice of individuals who possessed passion, vision, and a love for Jesus. In the final conclusion of 1 Corinthians, the names of these individuals appear. The household of Stephanas—who represented the delegation that visited Paul to report the issues of the Corinthian church—became the first converts in Achaia, which is the southern region of Greece (v. 15a).  

Furthermore, the house of Aquila and Prisca was also a church (v. 19b). We also know from Acts 16 during the mission in Philippi that Lydia’s house became the first church in Europe, serving as an outpost for the Gospel.  

The common thread among all these early churches is that individuals dedicated their personal homes as the church of God.  

Paul concludes with a brief exhortation:

These can be described as the characteristics of people like Stephanas, Aquila and Prisca, and Lydia. Paul’s exhortation to "be on your guard" (or "stay awake") indicates that this is very much an eschatological teaching. In the end times, there is no time to be drowsy or asleep. We must sober up, stay awake, and carry out the Lord's work.  

In "stand firm in the faith," faith refers precisely to the Gospel that Paul preached. It means a faith built upon Jesus Christ, not a faith built upon Cephas, Paul, or Apollos.  

"Be courageous" (literally, "act like men") is not a sexist statement. It means to move past weakness and become mature.  

"Do everything in love" uses the core phrase that permeates all of 1 Corinthians, and it appears three times in today's text alone. As already explained in chapter 13, whether we do missions, relief work, or worship, it only holds meaning when done with the love of Jesus.  

Paul states that the delegation who came to visit him—Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus—refreshed his spirit (v. 17). Stephanas, whose name means "wreath" or "crown," was baptized along with his entire household by Paul (1:16). He was the first convert in the region of Corinth and was an elder who dedicated himself and served the church and the saints.  

Fortunatus and Achaicus do not appear anywhere else in the Bible except here. Scholars speculate that they were likely members of Stephanas's household or of slave origin.  

Paul urges the Corinthians to submit to such people (v. 16). "Such people" are those who refresh the hearts of Paul and the Corinthian saints. Therefore, he commands them to "recognize such people" for their hard work (v. 18).  

Lately, in our own church, there are saints working hard to prepare for VBS (Vacation Bible School). We need to ask them what kind of help they need. We must recognize their hard work and encourage them. This is God's command.  

문안하라(19~24절)

바울은 모든 교회들이 서로 문안할 것을 당부하며 친필로 마무리 인사를 합니다.

특이한 점은 아굴라와 브리스가(19)라는 표현입니다. 그는 보통은 아내인 브리스가를 먼저 기록했습니다. 그런데 유독 고린도교회에 만큼은 아굴라를 먼저 기록합니다. 사실 당시 일반적인 순서는 남편이 먼저 나오는 것입니다. 그런데 바울은 평소에는 아내를 먼저 거론하다가, 이곳에서는 남편을 먼저 거론합니다. 아마도 고린도교회에 교훈 했던 여성들은 잠잠하라는 자신의 명령을 의식한 것으로 보입니다.

바울은 당시 일반적인 방법으로 대필하던 부분을 마치고 친히 친필로 마무리 인사를 합니다.

결론은 역시 사랑입니다.

주를 사랑하지 않으면 저주를 받을지어다(22a). 사실은 주를 사랑하지 않는 것 자체가 저주입니다.

바울은 마라나 다 Μαράνα θά, 우리 주여 오시옵소서(22b) 라고 외칩니다. 이것은 원래 아람어 기도문에 등장하는 구절로 מרנא תא 마라나 타, 주께서 임하시느니라를 헬라어로 소리나는 대로 기록한 것입니다. 신약성경에서 오직 이 곳에만 등장하는 말입니다. 바울은 마지막으로 주님의 은혜와 고린도교회를 향한 자신의 사랑이 그들과 함께 하기를 기원합니다(23~24).

Greet One Another (Verses 19–24)

Paul urges all the churches to greet one another and concludes the letter with a final greeting in his own hand.  

One unique detail is the expression "Aquila and Prisca" (v. 19). Usually, Paul listed the wife, Prisca, first. Yet, specifically to the Corinthian church, he records Aquila first. In the general culture of that time, listing the husband first was the standard order. While Paul normally bucked tradition by mentioning the wife first, here he mentions the husband first. It appears he was mindful of his own instruction to the Corinthian church that women should keep silent.  

Paul finishes the section where a scribe would typically write on his behalf and writes the final greeting with his own hand.  

The conclusion, as always, is love.  

"If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be cursed" (v. 22a). In reality, not loving the Lord is a curse in itself.  

Paul cries out: "Maranatha" (Μαράνα θά), "Come, O Lord!" (v. 22b). This phrase originally comes from an Aramaic prayer—Marana tha (מרנא תא), meaning "The Lord comes"—which was transliterated into Greek phonetically. This phrase appears only here in the entire New Testament. Finally, Paul prays that the grace of the Lord and his own love for the Corinthian church would be with them all (vv. 23–24).  

마지막 때를 사는 성도는 깨어 믿음위에 서서 영육 간에 강건하고, 서로 사랑으로 행해야 합니다. 또한 사랑 안에서 서로 문안하고, 주님을 진심으로 사랑하여 날마다 부활 소망을 가지고 주님 오심을 기다리는 자가 되어야 합니다. 그래서 우리는 오늘도 날마다 마라나 타 입니다.

Saints living in the end times must stay awake, stand firm in the faith, be strong in both spirit and body, and act toward one another in love. Furthermore, we must greet one another in love, genuinely love the Lord, and become those who wait for His coming daily with the hope of the resurrection. Therefore, for us, today and every day is "Maranatha."
