3:1 형제들아 내가 신령한 자들을 대함과 같이 너희에게 말할 수 없어서 육신에 속한 자 곧 그리스도 안에서 어린 아이들을 대함과 같이 하노라

3:2 내가 너희를 젖으로 먹이고 밥으로 아니하였노니 이는 너희가 감당하지 못하였음이거니와 지금도 못하리라

3:3 너희는 아직도 육신에 속한 자로다 너희 가운데 시기와 분쟁이 있으니 어찌 육신에 속하여 사람을 따라 행함이 아니리요

3:4 어떤 이는 말하되 나는 바울에게라 하고 다른 이는 나는 아볼로에게라 하니 너희가 육의 사람이 아니리요

[The Church and Its Leaders]

1 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?

3:5 그런즉 아볼로는 무엇이며 바울은 무엇이냐 그들은 주께서 각각 주신 대로 너희로 하여금 믿게 한 사역자들이니라

3:6 나는 심었고 아볼로는 물을 주었으되 오직 하나님께서 자라나게 하셨나니

3:7 그런즉 심는 이나 물 주는 이는 아무 것도 아니로되 오직 자라게 하시는 이는 하나님뿐이니라

3:8 심는 이와 물 주는 이는 한가지이나 각각 자기가 일한 대로 자기의 상을 받으리라

3:9 우리는 하나님의 동역자들이요 너희는 하나님의 밭이요 하나님의 집이니라

5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9 For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

3:10 내게 주신 하나님의 은혜를 따라 내가 지혜로운 건축자와 같이 터를 닦아 두매 다른 이가 그 위에 세우나 그러나 각각 어떻게 그 위에 세울까를 조심할지니라

3:11 이 닦아 둔 것 외에 능히 다른 터를 닦아 둘 자가 없으니 이 터는 곧 예수 그리스도라

3:12 만일 누구든지 금이나 은이나 보석이나 나무나 풀이나 짚으로 이 터 위에 세우면

3:13 각 사람의 공적이 나타날 터인데 그 날이 공적을 밝히리니 이는 불로 나타내고 그 불이 각 사람의 공적이 어떠한 것을 시험할 것임이라

3:14 만일 누구든지 그 위에 세운 공적이 그대로 있으면 상을 받고

3:15 누구든지 공적이 불타면 해를 받으리니 그러나 자신은 구원을 받되 불 가운데서 받은 것 같으리라

10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

오늘 본문에 무서운 말씀이 있습니다. 바로 13절에 “그날이 공적을 밝히리니 이는 불로 나타내고 그 불이 각 사람의 공적이 어떠한 것을 시험할 것임이라”에 나옵니다. 즉 마지막 날에 예수 그리스도라는 터 위에 각 사람이 세운 공적은 불로 시험을 받는다는 것인데요. 예수님의 이름으로 살고 사역을 한 자들은 무엇으로 공적을 쌓았는 가에 따라 상을 받는 유무가 달라질 것이라는 겁니다. 두려운 말씀이지만 또 얼마나 감사합니까. 이렇게 미리 알려주시니 우리 삶에 불에 타 없어지지 않을 것으로 공적을 잘 쌓아나가면 되지 않겠습니까? 그것을 어떻게 하는지, 또 어떤 재료로 믿음의 집을 지어야 하는지 살펴봅시다.

There is a sobering message in today’s passage. In verse 13 it says, “their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.” In other words, on the last day, each person’s work built on the foundation of Jesus Christ will be tested by fire. Those who have lived and ministered in the name of Jesus will either receive a reward or not, depending on what they used to build. It is a fearful message, yet also something to be deeply thankful for. Since we are told this beforehand, shouldn’t we strive to build with what will not be burned up? Let us consider how we can do this and with what materials we should build the house of our faith.

먼저 성숙한 믿음으로 자라나야 합니다 (1-8절).

사도 바울은 1절에 가감없이 고린도 성도들을 향해 “내가 너희를 어린아이들을 대함과 같이 하였다”고 말합니다. 이들은 하나님의 백성이 되었지만 여전히 육신에 속한 자와 같았습니다. 그들의 미성숙함은 시기와 분쟁으로 드러났습니다. 누구는 바울 편, 누구는 아볼로 편이라며 편을 가르며 분란을 조성했습니다. 요즘 현대 사회 교회와 별반 다르지가 않지요? 안타깝지만 시기, 분쟁, 편가르기 문제는 이 세상 어느 교회에나 있는 문제들입니다. 교회를 오래 다녔다고해서 모두의 신앙이 바르게 성장한다는 보장은 없습니다. 나이가 자람에 따라 아이가 젖을 떼고 밥을 먹어야 하는 것처럼 성숙한 교인은 바른 훈련을 통해 철부지적 시절의 모습을 버려야 합니다.

First, we must grow into mature faith (vv. 1–8).

In verse 1, the Apostle Paul plainly tells the Corinthian believers, “I had to speak to you as infants.” Though they had become God’s people, they were still worldly. Their immaturity was revealed through jealousy and quarrels. Some said they followed Paul, others Apollos, creating division among themselves. Isn’t this similar to the church today? Sadly, jealousy, conflict, and division exist in every church. Just because someone has been in church a long time does not guarantee spiritual growth. Just as a child must eventually move from milk to solid food, a mature believer must leave behind childish ways through proper spiritual training.

이때 사도 바울은 말합니다. 7절에 “그런즉 심는 이나 물 주는 이는 아무것도 아니로되 오직 자라게 하시는 이는 하나님뿐이니라.” 결국 우리의 믿음을 자라나게 하실 분은 오직 하나님 한 분뿐입니다. 그러므로 바울은 자신과 아볼로를 단지 복음을 위한 사역자로 묘사합니다. “나는 심었고 아볼로는 물을 주었으되 오직 하나님께서 자라나게 하셨나니 (6절).” 하나님의 일을 하는 모든 자들, 사역자들부터 시작하여 교회에서 봉사하는 성도들은 바른 정체성을 가져야 합니다. 사도 바울의 고백처럼 우리는 단지 주인이 맡긴 임무를 수행하는 일꾼이자 하나님의 동역자일 뿐입니다 (9a절). 봉사나 사역을 통해 내 이름이 드러나지 않을 때 서운함을 느끼거나 다른 사람들의 평가에 쉽게 흔들린다면 우리는 알게모르게 하나님의 영광을 가로채는 자들이 될 것입니다. 우리의 사역을이루시고 꽃 피워주실 유일하신 하나님을 붙잡고 더욱 크게 쓰임받는 우리 모두가 되길 원합니다.

At this point, Paul says in verse 7, “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” Ultimately, it is God alone who causes our faith to grow. Paul describes himself and Apollos simply as servants of the gospel: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” (v. 6). All who serve God—whether ministers or volunteers in the church—must have the right identity. As Paul confesses, we are merely workers carrying out the task entrusted by the Master and co-workers with God (v. 9a). If we feel disappointed when our name is not recognized or become easily shaken by others’ opinions, we may unknowingly be stealing God’s glory. May we hold onto the one God who brings growth and fruit, and be used even more greatly by Him.

다음으로 영원한 것을 붙잡아 공적을 쌓아야 합니다 (9-15절).

9절 하반절을 다시 살펴보면은 “너희는 하나님의 밭이요 하나님의 집이니라”라고 말합니다. 그리고 사도 바울은 하나님의 은혜를 따라 지혜로운 건축자가 되어 그 밭의 기초를 닦았는데 (10절), 그 기초가 바로 예수 그리스도라고 말합니다 (11절). 그리고  그 터 위에 무엇을 세우느냐는 우리 각 사람의 선택에 달린 문제입니다. 그러면 우리는 어떤 집을 지어야 할까요? 금과 은으로 치장된 궁전? 풀이나 짚으로 된 초가집? 사도 바울이 12절에 언급한 이러한 재료들 중 나무, 풀, 짚 같은 것들은 세상의 지혜, 사람의 인정, 자기 과시, 유행을 좇는 신앙을 상징합니다. 이러한 공적은 마지막 날 주님 앞에 설때 불로 시험받아 다 불타 없어질 것들입니다. 그러나 금과 은같은 귀중한 재료들은 마치 하나님의 말씀, 진리에 대한 순종, 고난 속에서도 포기하지 않는 믿음과도 같습니다. 이것들은 불 가운데서도 사라지지 않습니다.

Next, we must build with what is eternal (vv. 9–15).

Looking again at the latter part of verse 9, it says, “You are God’s field, God’s building.” The Apostle Paul, by the grace of God, became a wise builder and laid the foundation for that field (v. 10), and he declares that this foundation is Jesus Christ (v. 11). What each of us builds upon that foundation is a matter of personal choice. So what kind of house should we build? A palace adorned with gold and silver? Or a hut made of wood, hay, and straw? Among the materials Paul mentions in verse 12, things like wood, hay, and straw symbolize worldly wisdom, human approval, self-promotion, and a faith that follows trends. Such works will be tested by fire on the last day before the Lord and will be completely burned up. However, precious materials like gold and silver are like God’s Word, obedience to the truth, and a faith that does not give up even in the midst of suffering. These will not be consumed by fire.

우리는 계속해서 예수님 닮아가기 위해 지어짐을 받고 있습니다. 요즘 예수님만이 우리를 장성하게 키워주시고 불에 타 없어지지 않는 재료들을 구할 힘을 주십니다. 반석되신 예수님을 붙잡읍시다. 예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “내 말을 듣고 실천하는 사람은 반석 위에 집을 지은 지혜로운 사람과 같다 (마 7:24).” 비가 내려 홍수가 나고 바람이 불어도 또 불에도 무너지지 않는 집을 세우는 비결은 오직 예수님 안에서 지을 때 가능합니다. 세상의 유혹에 흔들리지 말고 나 자신의 의를 오늘도 죽이며 오직 예수만 담아내는 우리가 되기를 기도합니다.

We are continually being built up to become more like Jesus. Only Jesus can grow us into maturity and give us the strength to obtain materials that will not be burned up. Let us hold firmly to Jesus, the solid rock. As He says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). The secret to building a house that will not collapse—even when the rain falls, floods come, winds blow, and even through fire—is only possible when it is built in Jesus Christ. I pray that we will not be shaken by the temptations of the world, but instead die to our own righteousness each day and become people who reflect only Jesus.
