17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah. 18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.

2:19 시어머니가 그에게 이르되 오늘 어디서 주웠느냐 어디서 일을 하였느냐 너를 돌본 자에게 복이 있기를 원하노라 하니 룻이 누구에게서 일한 것을 시어머니에게 알게 하여 이르되 오늘 일하게 한 사람의 이름은 보아스니이다 하는지라

19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”

Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.

2:20 나오미가 자기 며느리에게 이르되 그가 여호와로부터 복 받기를 원하노라 그가 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자에게 은혜 베풀기를 그치지 아니하도다 하고 나오미가 또 그에게 이르되 그 사람은 우리와 가까우니 우리 기업을 무를 자 중의 하나이니라 하니라

20 “The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”

2:21 모압 여인 룻이 이르되 그가 내게 또 이르기를 내 추수를 다 마치기까지 너는 내 소년들에게 가까이 있으라 하더이다 하니

21 Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”

2:22 나오미가 며느리 룻에게 이르되 내 딸아 너는 그의 소녀들과 함께 나가고 다른 밭에서 사람을 만나지 아니하는 것이 좋으니라 하는지라

22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”

2:23 이에 룻이 보아스의 소녀들에게 가까이 있어서 보리 추수와 밀 추수를 마치기까지 이삭을 주우며 그의 시어머니와 함께 거주하니라

23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

          룻기는 참 재미있는 책입니다. 하나님의 직접적인 개입은 나오지 않는데 뭔가 늘 우연이 겹치지요. 짧은 책인데 뭔가 그 은근한 맛이 있습니다. 슴슴허니 별다른 기적이나 이사가 나오지도 않지요. 그저 하루하루 살아가는 소시민들의 이야기일 뿐입니다. 그런데 어쩌면 바로 그렇기 때문에 룻기는 우리에게 큰 울림을 주는지 모르겠습니다. 우리의 삶과 너무 닮아 있어서. 어쩌면 하나님께서 우리의 삶 가운데 일하시는 방법을 가장 잘 드러내고 있지 않나 싶습니다. 사람이 사람에게 행하는 선. 그 호의와 돌봄을 통해 하나님께서 일하시기 때문입니다. 오늘은 “사람을 통하여 일하시는 하나님의 은혜” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: The Subtle Flavor of Daily Life]

The Book of Ruth is a fascinating piece of scripture. We don’t see God’s direct, miraculous intervention, yet we see "coincidences" overlapping constantly. It is a short book, but it has a subtle, deep flavor. There are no grand miracles or signs; it is simply the story of ordinary people living their day-to-day lives.

But perhaps that is exactly why the Book of Ruth resonates so deeply with us—it is so much like our own lives. It reveals the way God works in the midst of our mundane reality: through the goodness people show to one another. Through hospitality, kindness, and care, God performs His work. Today, I want to share a message titled: “The Grace of God Working Through People.”

          먼저 룻을 한 번 보지요. 17절은 룻이 밭에서 저녁까지 줍고 그 주운 것을 떨었다고 말하고 있습니다. 저녁까지 주웠다는 것은 일과시간 끝까지 일하는 룻의 성실함을 보여줍니다. 지난 주일 본문이었던 2:7에서 사환이 룻을 가르켜 이렇게 이야기하지요. “룻이 아침부터 와서는 잠시 집에서 쉰 것 외에 지금까지 계속하는 중”이라고 말입니다. 하루 종일 허리를 숙여 바닥에 떨어진 이삭을 줍는 일. 고된 노동입니다. 분명 보아스의 호의로 이미 충분히 필요한 이삭을 줍고 하루를 일찍 마감했을 수도 있었을 것입니다. 그런데도 끝까지 일하는 룻의 이 성실함은 무엇 때문이었을까요? 그것은 자신의 시어머니를 돌보는 룻의 신실한 사랑 때문이었습니다. 1장에서 룻이 나오미를 따르고 함께 가겠다는 결심이 바로 이런 실제적인 행동으로 이어진 것이지요.

룻은 또한 자신이 배불리 먹고 남은 것을 어머님께 드립니다. 전 이 부분이 참 재미있습니다. 룻은 보아스의 호의를 입어 배불리 먹었습니다. 만족할 만큼 먹었습니다. 채워졌습니다. 심지어 차고 남았습니다. 이제 룻이 자신이 입은 호의를 어머님께 드립니다. 여러분 나오미가 베들레헴으로 돌아오면서 했던 말이 뭐였는지 기억하십니까? 1:21 “여호와께서 내게 비어 돌아오게 하셨느니라” 입니다. 그런데 보아스의 호의로 룻은 다 채워졌습니다. 차고 남았습니다. 그리고 그 차고 남았던 보아스의 호의가 룻의 호의로 이어져 비었던 나오미가 채워지게 되는 것입니다.

[1. Diligence Born of Faithfulness (v. 17-18)]

Let’s first look at Ruth. Verse 17 tells us that Ruth gleaned in the field until evening and then beat out what she had gleaned. Working until evening shows her extraordinary diligence. In verse 7, the foreman described her by saying she had been working since morning with only a brief rest. Stooping all day to pick up stalks of grain is grueling labor.

Given Boas’s favor, she likely could have gathered enough and finished early. Why did she work until the very end? It was because of her faithful love for her mother-in-law, Naomi. The commitment she made in Chapter 1 to follow and stay with Naomi was now being translated into these concrete, tiring actions.

Furthermore, Ruth brought the leftovers of her meal to her mother-in-law. This part is beautiful. Ruth was filled by Boas’s kindness—she ate until she was satisfied and had some left over. She then passed that favor on to Naomi. Do you remember what Naomi said when she first returned to Bethlehem? In 1:21, she said, "The Lord has brought me back empty." But through Boaz’s kindness, Ruth was filled. She had more than enough. And that overflowing favor flowed from Ruth to Naomi, so that the "empty" Naomi began to be "filled."

나오미는 그 차고 넘치는 호의에 놀랍니다. 그래서 묻는 것입니다. 19절 “오늘 어디서 주웠느냐? 어디서 일을 하였느냐? 너를 돌본 자에게 복이 있기를 원하노라” 나오미는 보자마자 알았습니다. 누군가 룻을 돌아보았구나, 룻에게 호의를 베풀었구나. 그도 그럴것이 17절에서 룻이 저녁까지 주운 보리가 한 에바쯤 된다고 합니다. 대충 22리터, 5.5갤런 정도 됩니다. 여러분 정수기에 꼽는 큰 생수통 아시지요? 그게 5갤런입니다. 물을 가득 채우면 여자분들은 혼자 들기 버거워요. 그런데 그것보다 더 큰 물통에 물보다도 무거운 보리가 가득하다고 생각해보십시오. 아마도 룻이 들 수 있었던 최대치가 아니었을까요? 낑낑대면서 나오미에게 들고 왔겠지요. 나오미가 얼마나 놀랐겠습니까? 가난한 사람이 하루에 주울 수 있는 이삭의 양이 아닙니다. 그래서 룻을 환대하고 호의를 베푼이가 보아스임을 알았을 때에 나오미는 20절에서 “그가 여호와로부터 복받기를 원하노라” 라고 축복하는 것입니다.

자, 그런데 이 때 나오미에게 큰 깨달음이 임합니다. 보아스의 환대와 호의가 룻을 통해 자신에게 임하는 것을 보면서 나오미는 이것이 하나님의 호의임을 알게 되는 것이지요. 나오미는 고백합니다. 여호와, “그가 살아있는 자와 죽은 자에게 은혜 베풀기를 그치지 아니하도다” 나오미가 누구입니까? 나를 더이상 기쁨이라 부르지 말고 괴로움, 마라라 불러라 말했던 사람입니다. “여호와께서 나를 징벌하셨고 전능자가 나를 괴롭게 하셨다” 고 고백한 사람입니다. 그런데 룻이 보아스의 밭에서 입은 엄청난 은혜를 보면서 나오미는 하나님의 신실하신 사랑이 산 자인 자신과 룻, 그리고 죽은 자인 남편과 아들들을 결코 떠나지 않았음을 깨닫게 되는 것입니다. 이는 놀라운 순간입니다. 그녀는 자신도 모르게 하나님의 신실하신 사랑이 죽음의 경계마저 넘어서신다는 사실을 고백하고 있기 때문입니다. 이 모든 것이 사람을 통하여 전해진 환대와 호의에서 비롯되었습니다.

[2. A Revelation Found in Kindness (v. 19-20)]

Naomi was astonished by this overflowing kindness. In verse 19, she asks: “Where did you glean today? And where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you.” Naomi knew immediately that someone had shown Ruth extraordinary favor.

In verse 17, we see that Ruth gleaned about an epha of barley—roughly 22 liters or 5.5 gallons. Think of those large water jugs used in office dispensers; that is 5 gallons. Filling that with barley, which is heavier than water, would be a heavy load for anyone to carry alone. Ruth likely carried the absolute maximum she could bear back to Naomi. Imagine Naomi’s shock! This wasn't the amount a poor person could gather in a day by mere luck. When she learned it was Boaz who had welcomed Ruth, she blessed him, saying, "May he be blessed by the Lord."

At that moment, a great realization struck Naomi. Seeing Boaz’s hospitality reaching her through Ruth, she recognized it as God's favor. Naomi, who once said, "Do not call me Naomi (Pleasant), call me Mara (Bitter)... the Almighty has brought calamity upon me," now confesses: “The Lord... whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” She realized that God’s faithful love () had never left her, Ruth, or even her deceased husband and sons. It is a stunning moment. She realizes that God’s faithfulness even crosses the boundary of death—all because of the kindness conveyed through a person.

이제 눈을 뜬 나오미는 이 우연 뒤에서 일하고 계시는 하나님을 보게 됩니다. 그래서 그녀는 룻에게 곧바로 보아스가 ‘기업 무를 자’ 중의 하나라고 말하는 것이지요. ‘기업 무를 자,’ ‘고엘’은 번역하기 어려운 단어입니다. 기본적으로는 위기에 처한 가족의 유업이 사라지지 않도록 책임을 지는 사람을 말합니다. 땅을 잃었을 때 그것을 되찾아 주고, 자유를 잃었을 때 값을 치러 속량하며, 자손 없이 죽은 이의 이름이 공동체에서 끊어지지 않도록 돌보는 역할을 맡습니다. 나오미는 이처럼 반복되는 우연과 보아스의 호의가 일시적인 것이 아니라 하나님이 규정하신 고엘 제도 안에서 이뤄지는 것임을 깨달은 것입니다. 율법이 말하는 환대와 친족에 대한 책임. 즉, 이방 여인이었던 룻이 이제는 더이상 남이 아니라는 것이지요. 공동체 안에서 보호를 받을 사람이며 친족의 관계 안으로 들어오게 될 사람이라는 것입니다. 그래서 룻이 보아스가 자기 밭을 떠나지 말라고 말했다고 나오미에게 전했을 때에 나오미는 그 말이 맞다. 너는 그 밭에 머물며 보아스의 보호를 받으라고 조언을 하는 것입니다. 그래서 룻은 시어머니의 말씀에 순종합니다. 보리 추수 뿐만 아니라 밀 추수가 끝나는 마지막 날 까지 매일 아침 밭으로 나가 이삭을 줍는 일상의 성실함으로 시어머니에 대한 신실함을 삶으로 살아내는 것입니다.

[3. From Stranger to Kin: The Grace of the Redeemer (v. 20-23)]

Now, with her eyes opened, Naomi sees God working behind these "coincidences." She tells Ruth that Boaz is one of their “redeemers” (20). Goel is a profound concept; it refers to a kinsman responsible for ensuring that a family’s heritage does not vanish. A redeemer buys back lost land, ransoms those who have lost their freedom, and cares for the name of the deceased so it is not cut off from the community.

Naomi realized that Boaz’s favor wasn't a one-time event, but was unfolding within the framework of God’s law. The hospitality and responsibility for kin meant that Ruth, a foreign woman, was no longer an outsider. She was now someone under protection, someone brought into the circle of kinship. When Ruth shared that Boaz told her to stay in his fields, Naomi agreed: "It is good, my daughter... that you not be met in another field." Ruth obeyed, living out her faithfulness to Naomi through the daily diligence of gleaning until the end of the harvest.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 말씀에는 아무런 드라마가 없습니다. 그러나 사람이 사람에게 행하는 선. 그 환대와 돌봄 가운데서 우리는 하나님이 일하시는 것을 봅니다. 사람의 호의를 통하여 하나님의 은혜가 임합니다. 비어있던 사람이 차고 넘치게 됩니다. 하나님으로부터 온 징벌과 괴로움 가운데 있다고 생각했던 사람이 하나님의 신실하신 사랑이 죽음조차 뛰어넘는 것임을 깨닫게 합니다. 공동체에서 제외되었던 가장 취약한 이방 여인이 이제는 보호를 받으며 친족이 됩니다. 모두 사람을 통하여 일하시는 하나님의 은혜였습니다. 선을 행하십시오. 선의를 베푸십시오. 환대하십시오. 돌보십시오. 여러분을 통하여 하나님의 은혜가 흐를 것입니다.

[Conclusion: Be a Conduit of Grace]

There is no grand drama in today’s passage. Yet, in the goodness people show to one another—in that hospitality and care—we see God at work.

·         Through human kindness, God’s grace descends.

·         Through favor, the empty are filled.

·         Through care, those who felt punished by God realize His love transcends even death.

·         Through hospitality, the most vulnerable foreigner is protected and becomes kin.

All of this was the grace of God working through people. Do good. Show kindness. Be hospitable. Care for one another. God’s grace will flow through you to change the world.
