104:1 내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라 여호와 나의 하나님이여 주는 심히 위대하시며 존귀와 권위로 옷 입으셨나이다

1 Praise the Lord, my soul.

Lord my God, you are very great;

    you are clothed with splendor and majesty.

104:2 주께서 옷을 입음 같이 빛을 입으시며 하늘을 휘장 같이 치시며

104:3 물에 자기 누각의 들보를 얹으시며 구름으로 자기 수레를 삼으시고 바람 날개로 다니시며

104:4 바람을 자기 사신으로 삼으시고 불꽃으로 자기 사역지를 삼으시며

2 The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment;

    he stretches out the heavens like a tent

3     and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters.

He makes the clouds his chariot

    and rides on the wings of the wind.

4 He makes winds his messengers,

    flames of fire his servants.

104:5 땅에 기초를 놓으사 영원히 흔들리지 아니하게 하셨나이다

104:6 옷으로 덮음 같이 주께서 땅을 깊은 바다로 덮으시매 물이 산들 위로 솟아올랐으나

104:7 주께서 꾸짖으시니 물은 도망하며 주의 우렛소리로 말미암아 빨리 가며

104:8 주께서 그들을 위하여 정하여 주신 곳으로 흘러갔고 산은 오르고 골짜기는 내려갔나이다

104:9 주께서 물의 경계를 정하여 넘치지 못하게 하시며 다시 돌아와 땅을 덮지 못하게 하셨나이다

5 He set the earth on its foundations;

    it can never be moved.

6 You covered it with the watery depths as with a garment;

    the waters stood above the mountains.

7 But at your rebuke the waters fled,

    at the sound of your thunder they took to flight;

8 they flowed over the mountains,

    they went down into the valleys,

    to the place you assigned for them.

9 You set a boundary they cannot cross;

    never again will they cover the earth.

         얼마 전에 아이들이 봄방박을 맞이하여 ‘프로젝트 헤일메리’라는 영화를 보러 간 적이 있었습니다. 지구에 알 수 없는 위기가 닥쳐서 세계에서 가장 뛰어난 과학자들과 우주 비행사들이 우주로 나가 그 문제의 해답을 찾는 내용을 담고 있지요. 평상시에는 잊고 살고 있었는데 그 우주를 묘사하는 장면들을 보니 우리가 살고 있는 우주란 얼마나 광대한 것인가 다시 한번 생각해보게 되었습니다. 그리고 이 광대한 우주를 지으신 하나님은 또한 얼마나 크신 분인가 생각해보게 되었지요. 그렇습니다. 우리가 나의 하나님, 나의 아버지라고 부르는 하나님은 이 세상의 창조주이십니다. 우리가 살고 있는 지구와 전 우주를 모두 만드신 분이 바로 하나님이시지요. 오늘은 세상의 기초를 놓으시는 하나님을 묵상하며 “찬양하라, 창조주, 나의 하나님” 이라는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: The Immensity of the Universe]

Recently, my children went to see the movie Project Hail Mary during their spring break. It’s a story where Earth faces an unknown crisis, and the world’s most brilliant scientists and astronauts journey into space to find an answer. Usually, we go about our daily lives without thinking much about the cosmos, but seeing those depictions of the universe made me realize once again just how vast the world we live in truly is. It also made me wonder: how much greater must the God be who created this immense universe?

The God we call "my God" and "my Father" is the Creator of this world. He is the one who made both the Earth we inhabit and the entire cosmos. Today, as we meditate on the God who lays the foundations of the world, I want to share a message titled: “Praise the Creator, My God.”

         오늘 본문은 하나님께서 이 세상의 기초를 어떻게 세우셨는지 시적인 언어로 표현하고 있습니다. 그 표현 가운데 첫번째로 하나님의 창조를 조물주, 즉 만물을 만드시는 주인으로서 비추기보다는 만물을 다스리시는 왕으로 조명하는 것을 볼 수 있지요. 1-2절에서 시인은 하나님을 이렇게 묘사합니다. “주는 심히 위대하시며 존귀와 권위로 옷 입으셨나이다. 주께서 옷을 입음같이 빛을 입으시며” 존귀와 권위로 옷을 입었다는 말은 하나님의 왕권을 암시하는 말이지요. 특별히 2절에서 빛을 입었다는 말은 단순히 무언가를 입었다는 말이 아니라 빛을 마치 왕의 도포처럼 몸에 둘렀다는 의미입니다. 즉 하나님의 왕권, 하나님의 다스리심을 표현하는 것이지요. 그러므로 이 빛은 창세기 1:3의 “빛이 있으라”는 말씀으로 세상을 창조하신 하나님의 창조 사역이 왕되신 하나님의 다스리심임을 알게 하는 것입니다. 

[1. God as the Sovereign King]

Today’s passage uses poetic language to describe how God established the foundations of the world. Interestingly, it portrays God’s creation not just from the perspective of a "Maker" or "Craftsman," but as a Sovereign King who rules over all things. In verses 1–2, the psalmist describes God like this:

"You are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment."

To be "clothed with splendor and majesty" is a direct reference to God’s royal authority. Specifically, in verse 2, "wrapping himself in light" doesn't simply mean He is wearing something; it means He wears light like a royal robe. This expresses His kingship and His active reign. Therefore, this light reminds us that the creative work of the God who said, “Let there be light” in Genesis 1:3 is, in fact, the governing act of a King.

         자 다음은 하나님의 초월성입니다. 하나님께서는 왕이시기 때문에 다스림을 받는 존재 위에 계시지요. 빛을 용포처럼 두르고 계신다는 말은 하나님의 거룩함과 초월성을 나타내는 단어이면서 또한 하나님이 피조세계와 근본적으로 구별되는 분임을 나타냅니다. 2절 하반절의 “하늘을 휘장같이 치시며” 라는 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 이사야 40:22 을 보면 “그는 땅 위 궁창에 앉으시나니 땅에 사는 사람들은 메뚜기 같으니라 그가 하늘을 차일 같이 펴셨으며 거주할 천막 같이 치셨고” 라는 말씀이 있습니다. 하늘 위의 궁창에 거주하시는 하나님. 그리고 땅에 사는 메뚜기 같은 사람들. 하나님은 이 세상과 구분되는 초월자이신 것이지요. 온 우주를 마치 잠시 머물 천막을 치듯이 손쉽게 펼치시는 하나님의 능력은 하나님의 초월적인 힘을 그대로 보여주는 것입니다.

[2. The Transcendence of God]

Next, we see God’s transcendence. Because God is King, He stands far above those He rules. Being robed in light signifies His holiness and transcendence, showing that He is fundamentally distinct from the created world. Verse 2 continues: "stretching out the heavens like a tent."

Isaiah 40:22 says, "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth... He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in." God dwells in the firmament above the heavens. Compared to Him, humans can seem as small as grasshoppers. God is the Transcendent One, distinct from this world. His power—easily spreading out the entire universe as if pitching a temporary tent—vividly demonstrates His transcendent strength.

         그런데 3절이 조금 재미있습니다. 방금전까지 하늘에 휘장, 천막을 치시는 하나님에 대해 이야기했었는데 갑자기 “물에 자기 누각의 들보를 얹으시며” 라고 말하고 있습니다. 하늘에 처소를 마련하신 하나님이 당신의 누각의 들보를 땅보다 아래인 바다 위에 얹으셨을까? 의문이 들지요. 자 그런데 창조이야기를 가만히 생각해보면 우리는 하나님이 궁창을 만드실 때에 궁창 아래의 물과 궁창 위의 물로 나뉘게 하셨다는 말씀을 기억할 수 있습니다. 이 물은 하늘 위의 물을 가르키는 것이지요. 하나님께서 하늘 위에 있는 그 물에 들보를 얹으셨다는 것입니다. 출애굽기 24:10에 모세와 이스라엘 장로 70인이 하나님께 올라가서 하나님을 뵙는 장면이 나오는데 이렇게 묘사하고 있습니아. “이스라엘의 하나님을 보니 그의 발 아래에는 청옥, 즉, 사파이어를 편 듯 하고 하늘 같이 청명하더라” 우리가 사는 이 땅, 그 위의 하늘, 그리고 그 위의 물. 하나님이 계시는 곳은 그의 발 아래에는 마치 물처럼 사파이어를 편듯하고 하늘처럼 청명하다고 합니다. 이렇듯 하나님께서는 피조세계와 완전히 구분되는 초월자이신 것이지요.

[3. The Lord of the Upper Waters]

Verse 3 is quite intriguing. Right after talking about pitching a tent in the heavens, it says: "He lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters." We might wonder, "Why would God, who prepared His dwelling in the heavens, lay the beams of His palace on the waters?"

If we recall the creation story, we remember that when God made the firmament, He separated the "waters below" from the "waters above." These "waters" refer to the celestial waters above the heavens. God laid His beams upon those upper waters. In Exodus 24:10, when Moses and the seventy elders of Israel saw God, it says: "under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself." Below His feet, it looked like sapphire spread out like water. Thus, God is the Transcendent One, completely set apart from the created world.

         이런 초월자인 하나님께서 5절을 보니 땅에 기초를 놓으셨습니다. 또 영원히 흔들리지 않게 하셨다고 하지요. 이는 하나님의 창조가 그저 만드심이 아니라 질서를 세우시는 다스리심이라는 것을 또한 말해주고 있는 것입니다. 3절과 4절을 보면 인간에게는 경외와 두려움의 대상들인 바람과 불꽃과 같은 자연의 현상들이 하나님의 시종으로, 또 제사장처럼 하나님을 섬기는 사역자들로 일하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 모든 천하 만물들, 모든 자연의 섭리까지도 하나님의 다스리심에 따라 일한다는 것이지요. 그 하나님의 다스리심은 영원히 흔들리지 않는 것입니다. 그 예를 볼 수 있는 것이 6-9절의 말씀입니다. 고대 근동의 우주관에서 ‘물’은 혼돈과 무질서, 불안정의 상징이었습니다. 자 그런데 6절을 보시면 하나님께서 땅을 깊은 바다로 덮으셔서 물이 산들 위로 솟아 올랐다고 합니다. 이 말씀은 그 혼돈의 물 또한 하나님의 주권 아래에 있다는 것이지요. 하나님께서 땅을 깊은 바다로 덮으셨기에 물이 산들 위로 올라온 것입니다. 그 혼돈이 자신들의 힘으로 그 뜻을 이룬 것이 아니라는 것이지요. 7절에서 주께서 꾸짖으시니 물은 도망합니다. 주님의 우렛소리에 혼비백산합니다. 8절에 그 혼돈이 있어야 할 곳을 하나님께서 정해주십니다. 그리고 9절에서 하나님께서 아예 물의 경계를 정하여 주시지요. 그리고는 다시는 땅을 덮지 못하게 하셨습니다. 이 말씀들은 지구 과학적인 묘사보다는 이 말씀을 통해 창조가 하나님의 말씀으로 이루어졌음을 보여주는 것입니다. 하나님이 명령하시는대로, 하나님의 통치에 따라 창조의 질서가 확정되는 것이지요. 하나님은 혼돈을 제거하시고 질서를 세워 피조물들이 머물 수 있는 자리를 마련하시는 분이십니다. 그래서 하나님의 다스리심은 피조세계를 보호하는 성격을 지니며 피조물에 대한 사랑이 드러나는 것이지요.

[4. Establishing Order over Chaos]

In verse 5, we see this Transcendent God laying the foundations of the earth so that it can never be moved. This tells us that God’s creation is not just an act of "making" but a "ruling" that establishes Order.

In verses 3 and 4, we see natural phenomena like wind and fire—which are often objects of fear for humans—acting as God’s servants or ministers. Every element of the universe and all the laws of nature work according to God’s governance, and that governance is unshakable.

We see an example of this in verses 6–9. In the ancient Near Eastern worldview, "water" was a symbol of chaos, disorder, and instability. Verse 6 says God covered the earth with the deep, and the waters stood above the mountains. This means even the chaotic waters are under God’s sovereignty; the chaos did not achieve its state through its own power.

In verse 7, at God’s rebuke, the waters fled; at the sound of His thunder, they took to flight. In verse 8, God assigns the chaos a place where it belongs. And in verse 9, He sets a boundary they cannot pass, so they will never cover the earth again. These verses show that creation is established by God’s Word. According to His command, the order of creation is finalized. God removes chaos and establishes order, making a place where His creatures can dwell. Therefore, God’s reign is protective and reveals His profound love for His creation.

         말씀을 맺습니다. 다스리시는 왕. 초월자. 질서를 세우시는 창조주. 오늘의 시인은 그 하나님을 찬양하라 말하고 있습니다. 그런데 더 놀라운 것은 이렇게 광대하시고 창조주 되신 하나님이 바로 여러분의, 또, 저의 하나님이라는 것입니다. 그 하나님의 크심을 생각할 때에 그리고 그 크신 하나님이 우리를 어떻게 지키시고 사랑하시는 지를 깨달을 때에 우리는 하나님을 찬양하지 않을 수 없습니다. 여러분 창조주되시는 여러분의 하나님을 찬양하는 오늘 하루 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion: Praise Our Creator]

The Sovereign King. The Transcendent One. The Creator who establishes order. Today’s psalmist tells us to praise that God. But what is even more amazing is that this vast, glorious Creator is your God and my God.

When we think of His greatness and realize how that Great God protects and loves us, we cannot help but praise Him. I pray that today will be a day where you praise your God, the Creator. I bless you in the name of the Lord.
