103:1 내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라 내 속에 있는 것들아 다 그의 거룩한 이름을 송축하라

103:3 그가 네 모든 죄악을 사하시며 네 모든 병을 고치시며

103:4 네 생명을 파멸에서 속량하시고 인자와 긍휼로 관을 씌우시며

103:5 좋은 것으로 네 소원을 만족하게 하사 네 청춘을 독수리 같이 새롭게 하시는도다

1 Praise the Lord, my soul;

    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the Lord, my soul,

    and forget not all his benefits—

3 who forgives all your sins

    and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit

    and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things

    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

103:6 여호와께서 공의로운 일을 행하시며 억압 당하는 모든 자를 위하여 심판하시는도다

6 The Lord works righteousness

    and justice for all the oppressed.

103:7 그의 행위를 모세에게, 그의 행사를 이스라엘 자손에게 알리셨도다

103:8 여호와는 긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시고 인자하심이 풍부하시도다

103:9 자주 경책하지 아니하시며 노를 영원히 품지 아니하시리로다

103:10 우리의 죄를 따라 우리를 처벌하지는 아니하시며 우리의 죄악을 따라 우리에게 그대로 갚지는 아니하셨으니

103:11 이는 하늘이 땅에서 높음 같이 그를 경외하는 자에게 그의 인자하심이 크심이로다

7 He made known his ways to Moses,

    his deeds to the people of Israel:

8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

    slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,

    nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve

    or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

    so great is his love for those who fear him;

                오늘의 시편은 ‘다윗의 시’ 라고 부제가 적혀있습니다. 문맥을 고려할 때에 아마도 다윗이 병에서 회복한 뒤에 감사하며 썼던 시가 아닌가 싶습니다. 그런데 이런 개인의 경험을 바탕으로 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 다시 한번 확인한 다윗은 그 하나님의 성품이 모든 사람을 향한 것임을 고백합니다. 그것이 본문의 시편입니다. 그래서 오늘은 “은혜를 기억할 때 하나님이 보입니다” 라는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: From Personal Experience to Universal Character]

Today’s Psalm is subtitled “A Psalm of David.” Considering the context, it seems likely that David wrote this in a spirit of gratitude after recovering from a serious illness. However, David does not stop at his personal experience; he uses it as a foundation to reaffirm who God is and confesses that God’s character is directed toward all people. This is the heart of today's text. Thus, I want to share a message titled: “When We Remember His Grace, We See God.”

                 1절에서 다윗은 자신에게 명령합니다. “내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라.” 여러분 혹시 이렇게 스스로에게 “내 영혼아 하나님을 찬양하라” 말씀해보신 적 있으신가요? 보통 그럴 때는 어떤 때에 그렇게 말씀하시나요? 그렇죠. 마음이 힘들 때. 예배의 자리에 나왔는데 나의 감정이나 생각이 하나님을 예배하기를 원치 않거나 아니면 준비되지 않을 때. 보통 그럴 때 스스로에게 이렇게 말을 하는 것 같습니다. 다윗도 마찬가지 아니었을까요? 어쩌면 그는 예배하기 어려운 상황이었을지도 모르겠습니다. 그래서 “내 영혼아” 여기서 영혼이라는 말은 목구멍을 뜻하기도 하는데 “내 목구멍아! 하나님을 소리쳐 찬양하라” 고 명령하는 것이지요. “내 속에 있는 것들아” 이 당시 사람들은 생각은 심장으로 하고 감정은 내장기관이 한다고 생각했으므로 “내 속에 있는 모든 생각과 감정아! 다 하나님의 거룩한 이름을 송축하라!” 라고 명령하고 있는 것 같습니다. 그 명령을 다시 반복하는 것이 2절이지요. 자 그런데, 그렇게 스스로에게 되뇌이며 계속해서 하나님을 예배하라고 의지적으로 결단하던 다윗이 예배의 자리로 나아가게 했던 계기는 바로 “그의 모든 은택을 잊지 말지어다” 라는 명령이었습니다. 하나님께서 그의 삶 가운데 베풀어주신 모든 은혜. 하나님께서 그의 평생에 그를 어떻게 대우하셨는지를 기억하는 것이었습니다. 그 은혜를 기억할 때에 그는 더이상 예배로 나아가지 못하는 자신에게 촛점이 맞춰져 있는 것이 아니라 하나님이 무슨 일을 행하셨는지 자신에서 하나님께로 그 시선이 옮겨지게 되었던 것입니다. 은혜를 기억할 때 하나님이 보이는 것입니다.

[1. Command Thy Soul: A Deliberate Decision to Worship]

In verse 1, David issues a command to himself: “Bless the Lord, O my soul.” Have you ever spoken to yourself like this? “O my soul, praise God!” Usually, we do this when our hearts are heavy, or when we stand in the place of worship but our emotions and thoughts are not ready or willing to praise Him. David might have been in such a state—perhaps in a situation where worship felt difficult.

The word for "soul" () can also mean "throat." In essence, he is commanding, “O my throat! Open up and shout praises to God!” He continues, “and all that is within me.” People of that time believed thoughts came from the heart and emotions from the internal organs. So, he is saying, “Every thought and every emotion inside me! Bless His holy name!”

He repeats this command in verse 2, but adds a crucial key: “and forget not all his benefits.” This was the catalyst that drew David into the presence of worship—remembering all the grace God had bestowed upon his life. When he remembered His grace, his focus shifted. He was no longer staring at his own inability to worship; instead, his gaze moved from himself to God’s mighty deeds. When we remember His grace, God becomes visible.

본문 3-5절은 그가 체험한 하나님의 은택이 무엇이었는지 설명합니다. 그런데 우리가 주목할 것은 다윗이 자신이 경험한 모든 하나님의 은혜 가운데서 그 첫번째로 꼽는 것이 바로 하나님께서 자신의 모든 죄악을 사하셨다는 것입니다. 말씀을 보니 다른 은혜들도 너무 좋은 것들이 많습니다. 병을 고쳐주셨고, 죽음의 위기에 처한 그의 생명을 살리셨습니다. 인자와 긍휼로 관을 씌우셨다는 말은 다윗의 모든 상황이 완전히 회복되었음을 말해줍니다. 게다가 마음의 소원을 만족하게 하시는데 좋은 것으로 그렇게 하셨다고 합니다. 그리고 회춘하게 하셨대요. “네 청춘을 독수리 같이 새롭게 하시는도다.” 부럽습니다. 얼마나 좋은 일입니까? 저도 여러분도 이런 은혜가 있기를 기도합니다. 자, 그런데 다윗은 이 많은 은혜 중에 하나님께서 자신의 모든 죄악을 사하셨다는 것을 첫번째로 꼽습니다. 그것은 거룩하신 하나님이 죄 가운데 있는 우리를 용서하여 주실 때에 깨어졌던 하나님과 우리의 관계가 회복되기 때문입니다. 그리고 그것은 우리의 힘으로는 할 수 있는 일이 아니고 오직 하나님께서 그 값을 치루고 우리를 용서하여 주실 때에만 가능한 것이기 때문입니다. 다윗은 아직 예수님의 십자가를 알지 못하였겠지만 하나님의 죄 사하심이 얼마나 큰 희생을 치뤄야 하는지는 알았던 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그는 그 모든 은혜 중에 죄 사함의 은혜를 가장 첫번째로 꼽았던 것 같습니다. 그가 자신이 받은 은혜를 기억할 때에 그는 하나님이 무엇을 하셨는지 보게 된 것입니다.

[2. The Greatest Benefit: The Forgiveness of Sins]

Verses 3–5 describe the specific "benefits" he experienced. What we must notice is that among all the grace he received, David ranks the forgiveness of all his iniquities as the very first.

The other blessings are wonderful: He heals all diseases; He redeems life from the pit of death; He crowns us with steadfast love and mercy—meaning a total restoration of our circumstances. He even satisfies our desires with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s. How envious we are of such blessings! I pray that you and I may experience this kind of grace.

Yet, David puts forgiveness first. Why? Because when a Holy God forgives us in our sin, the broken relationship between God and us is restored. Moreover, this is something we cannot do for ourselves; it is only possible because God Himself paid the price to forgive us. Though David did not yet know the Cross of Jesus, perhaps he understood the immense sacrifice required for God to forgive sins. Because he remembered this specific grace, he was able to see what God had truly done.

6-11절은 이제 다윗이 자신에게 행하신 하나님의 은혜만을 기억하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 성품에 주목하기 시작합니다. 그래서 그는 모든 사람을 향한 하나님의 성품을, 하나님의 인자하심을 노래하기 시작합니다. 먼저 그는 하나님의 공의로우심을 선포합니다. 6절, “여호와께서 공의로운 일을 행하시며 억압당하는 모든 자를 위하여 심판하시는도다.”  하나님의 공의로우심은 모든 사람을 향한 것입니다. 하나님은 당신의 그 공의로우심대로 당신의 백성들 또한 그렇게 살아가기를 원하셨습니다. 그래서 그들이 본이 되고 그들을 통하여 당신의 공의가 온 열방에 전하여지기를 원하셨습니다. 바로 그렇기 때문에 그들에게 당신의 공의의 정수, 율법을 모세를 통하여 이스라엘 자손에게 주신 것이지요. 하지만 우리는 그 결과가 무엇인지 압니다. 모든 사람이 그 율법을 지키지 못하고 죄의 심판 가운데 거하게 되는 것이지요. 그런데 다윗은 하나님이 분명 공의로우신 분이시만 또한 자비로우신 분이라고 말하고 있습니다. 그것이 8절인데, 오늘 말씀의 핵심이지요. 같이 읽겠습니다. “여호와는 긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시고 인자하심이 풍부하시도다” 아멘. 이것은 출애굽기 34장에서 하나님께서 모세에게 직접 자신을 계시하신 내용입니다. 이 하나님의 성품, 인자하심을 확장하여 설명하는 것이 8-11절의 내용입니다. 저는 여러분이 오늘 말씀에서 이 8-11절을 하루 중에 반복해서 읊으셨으면 좋겠습니다. 그렇게 하신다면 이 설교 전체를 잊으셔도 좋아요. 자, 앞에서 우리는 다윗이 죄사함의 은혜를 첫번째로 꼽았던 것을 보았습니다. 그것은 무엇 때문입니까? 바로 하나님의 성품, 하나님의 인자하심을 다시금 다윗이 기억하였기 때문입니다. 하나님은 공의로우신 분이신데 10절에 보니 “우리의 죄를 따라 처벌하지는 아니하”신다고 하십니다. 11절에 보니 “그를 경외하는 자에게 그의 인자하심이” 하늘이 땅에서 높음같이 크다고 말하고 있습니다. 여러분 이것이 우리를 향한 하나님의 은혜입니다.

[3. The Character of God: Abounding in Steadfast Love]

In verses 6–11, David moves beyond remembering what God did for him personally and begins to focus on God’s universal character. He sings of God’s lovingkindness toward all people. First, he declares God’s righteousness: “The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed” (v. 6).

God desired His people to live according to this righteousness so that they might be an example to the nations. This is why He gave the Law—the essence of His justice—to the children of Israel through Moses. However, we know the result: no one could keep the Law, and all fell under the judgment of sin.

But David declares that while God is righteous, He is also merciful. Verse 8 is the core of today’s message: “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” This is the very revelation God gave of Himself to Moses in Exodus 34. I hope you will recite verses 8–11 repeatedly throughout your day. If you do, you may even forget the rest of this sermon.

David remembered the forgiveness of sins because he remembered God’s character. Verse 10 says, “He does not deal with us according to our sins,” and verse 11 declares that for those who fear Him, His steadfast love is as great as “the heavens are high above the earth.” This, brothers and sisters, is the grace of God toward us.

말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 하나님의 은혜를 기억해야 합니다. 그때에 우리의 눈은 우리 중심의 시선에서 벗어나 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 바라볼 수 있습니다. 그 때에 우리는 내 상황이 아닌 내 주위의 사람들과, 가정과, 직장과, 교회와, 그리고 나의 이웃들을 향한 하나님의 인자하심을 볼 수 있게 될 것입니다. 모든 은혜를 기억하여 하나님을 보시기를 축원합니다.

[Conclusion: Shifting Our Gaze]

In conclusion: We must remember God’s grace. When we do, our eyes are freed from our self-centered perspective to behold who God truly is. We will then be able to see His steadfast love reaching out—not just to our circumstances, but to our families, our workplaces, our church, and our neighbors. I pray that you will see God today by remembering all His benefits.
