26:26 그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받아서 먹으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

26:27 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 다 이것을 마시라

26:28 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라

26:29 그러나 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 이제부터 내 아버지의 나라에서 새 것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날까지 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라

27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

26:30 이에 그들이 찬미하고 감람 산으로 나아가니라

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

26:31 그 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 오늘 밤에 너희가 다 나를 버리리라 기록된 바 내가 목자를 치리니 양의 떼가 흩어지리라 하였느니라

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,

    and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

26:32 그러나 내가 살아난 후에 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

26:33 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 모두 주를 버릴지라도 나는 결코 버리지 않겠나이다

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

26:34 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”

26:35 베드로가 이르되 내가 주와 함께 죽을지언정 주를 부인하지 않겠나이다 하고 모든 제자도 그와 같이 말하니라

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

새해를 맞이하시면서 새롭게 다짐했던 결심이 있으셨습니까? 그 결심을 다 잘 지키고 계신가요? 우리 인간들을 연약해서 우리 자신의 결심만을 의지하면서 살다보면 자주 실패를 경험합니다. 그러니 함부로 장담할 수 없는 것이 우리의 현실이지요. 오늘 본문에도 자신의 결심을 장담하는 자가 등장합니다. 바로 베드로인데요. “모두 주를 버릴지라도 나는 버리지 않겠나이다”(33절)라고 호언장담을 합니다. 베드로가 이런 반응을 보일 줄을 예수님은 다 알고 계셨겠지요. 그래서 오늘 제자들에게 그들의 실패를 다시 예고하시기 전에 주의 만찬에서 떡과 잔을 통해 새 언약의 은혜를 먼저 선포하십니다.  오늘 본문을 통해서 성찬과 예배에 참여하는 우리도 마치 제자들처럼 여전히 흔들리고 넘어지는 이 현실에서 어떻게 다시 일어나 나아갈 수 있는지 살펴봅시다.

As you welcomed the new year, did you make any new resolutions? Are you keeping them well? As human beings, we are weak, and when we rely solely on our own determination, we often experience failure. That is why we cannot confidently guarantee anything in our reality. In today’s passage, there is someone who boldly insists on his own resolve—Peter. He confidently declares, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will” (v. 33). Jesus already knew Peter would respond this way. So before predicting the disciples’ failure, He first proclaims the grace of the new covenant through the bread and the cup during the Lord’s Supper. Through today’s passage, let us reflect on how we, who participate in communion and worship, can rise again and move forward even as we continue to stumble and fall like the disciples.

1)    마지막 만찬이 시사하는 바

먼저 예수님께서는 떡과 잔을 통해 새 언약의 은혜를 선포하십니다. 26절에서 예수님은 빵을 들고 축복하신 후 떼어 제자들에게 나눠주시며, “이것은 내 몸이니라” 말씀하십니다. 빵을 찢는 것은 예수님의 수난과 죽음을 의미합니다. 과거 이스라엘 백성들이 유월절 때 무교병을 떼어 서로 나눠먹은 것은 조상들이 이집트에서 떠나온 과정에서 겪은 고난과 그들을 보호하신 하나님의 은혜를 기억하기 위함이었습니다. 그러나 이제 제자들은 주의 만찬에 참석하여 예수님의 고난과 그의 죽음을 기억해야 합니다.

다음으로 예수님께서는 포도주와 그것을 마시는 행위의 의미를 설명하십니다. 28절에 예수님께서는 포도주가 많은 사람의 죄를 용서 하기 위해 부어지는 새 언약의 피라고 말씀하십니다. 과거 이스라엘 백성들은 제사장을 통해서 동물의 피를 사용해 죄사함을 받았더라면, 이제 예수님은 당신의 피를 직접 사용하여 백성들의 죄를 영원하고도 단번에 사하게 하시는 새로운 언약을 체결하십니다. 이처럼 피는 죄 용서를 위한 은혜의 수단이 되지요. 그러므로 성찬은 용서의 은혜가 다시 선포되는 자리입니다. 우리가 주기적으로 성찬에 참가하는 이유도 바로 그 때문입니다. 우리는 용서의 은혜를 기억해야 합니다. 주님은 떡과 잔을 통해 구원의 은혜를 기억하게 하시고 다시 제자의 삶을 살도록 우리를 초대하십니다.

1)    What the Last Supper Signifies

First, Jesus proclaims the grace of the new covenant through the bread and the cup. In verse 26, Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to His disciples, saying, “This is my body.” The breaking of the bread symbolizes Jesus’ suffering and death. In the past, when the Israelites broke and shared unleavened bread during Passover, it was to remember the suffering their ancestors endured while leaving Egypt and God’s grace in protecting them. But now, the disciples are called to remember Jesus’ suffering and His death through the Lord’s Supper.

Next, Jesus explains the meaning of the wine and drinking it. In verse 28, He says that the wine is “my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” In the past, the Israelites received forgiveness of sins through the blood of animals offered by priests. But now, Jesus establishes a new covenant by offering His own blood to forgive the sins of His people once and for all, eternally. Thus, the blood becomes the means of grace for the forgiveness of sins. Communion, therefore, is a place where the grace of forgiveness is proclaimed again. This is why we regularly participate in it—to remember the grace of forgiveness. Through the bread and the cup, the Lord reminds us of the grace of salvation and invites us once again to live as His disciples.

2)    제자들의 실패 예언

주님은 우리의 연약함을 다 아시고 회복시키는 분이십니다. 유월절 식사가 끝난 후, 예수님과 제자들은 찬송을 부르며 감람산으로 나아갑니다. 그리고 31절에 예수님은 제자들이 모두 곧 두려움에 사로잡혀 다 예수님을 떠나 흩어질 것을 예고하십니다. 그러자 베드로는 33절에 “모두 주를 버릴지라도 나는 결코 버리지 않겠나이다”라고 말하죠. 그의 이런 강한 부정에 예수님은 더욱 자세히 그의 배신을 알려주십니다. “내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라”(34절). 그러자 35절에 베드로는 다시 한번 부정하고 나머지 제자들 또한 강력히 예수님의 예언을 부정합니다. 사실 이들의 이러한 반응과 말은 아무런 소용이 없습니다. 왜냐하면 그들이 얼마나 강력히 장담을 했든지 간에 예수님의 예언은 다 현실이 되었기 때문입니다.

이런 상황 속에서 예수님은 이미 회복을 약속하셨습니다. 32절에 “그러나 내가 살아난 후에 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라”라고 주신 이 말씀은 제자들을 그 두려움과 혼란 가운데 내버려 두지 않겠다는 약속이십니다. 이렇듯 우리는 우리의 다짐과는 다르게 두려움과 유혹 앞에 쉽게 무너지고는 합니다. 그런 우리 자신의 연약함을 보고 스스로를 정죄하며 낙심할 수도 있습니다. 이때 우리는 제자들처럼 우리의 능력을 과대평가하며 쓸데없는 자존심을 부릴 필요가 전혀 없습니다. 겸손히 우리의 부족함을 인정하고 주님을 붙잡으면 됩니다. 주님의 언약과 은혜를 의지합시다. 그러면 우리는 두렵고 흔들리는 현실 가운데에서도 계속 나아갈 수 있습니다. 그러므로 우리를 다시 회복시켜주시는 주님을 함께 찬양합시다.

2) The Prediction of the Disciples’ Failure

The Lord knows our weakness and restores us. After the Passover meal, Jesus and His disciples sing a hymn and go out to the Mount of Olives. In verse 31, Jesus foretells that all the disciples will soon fall away and scatter in fear. But Peter says in verse 33, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” In response to his strong denial, Jesus speaks more specifically about his betrayal: “Truly I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times” (v. 34). Yet Peter denies it again in verse 35, and all the other disciples strongly reject Jesus’ prediction as well. In truth, their words and confidence are meaningless, because no matter how strongly they insisted, Jesus’ prediction came to pass.

Even in this situation, Jesus had already promised restoration. In verse 32, He says, “But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” This is His promise that He will not leave His disciples in fear and confusion. Likewise, we often collapse easily in the face of fear and temptation, despite our resolutions. Seeing our own weakness, we may condemn ourselves and fall into discouragement. At such times, we do not need to overestimate ourselves or cling to empty pride like the disciples. Instead, we should humbly acknowledge our weakness and hold on to the Lord. Let us rely on His covenant and His grace. Then, even in a fearful and unstable reality, we will be able to keep moving forward. Therefore, let us praise the Lord who restores us again.
