[Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus]

14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.


26:17 무교절의 첫날에 제자들이 예수께 나아와서 이르되 유월절 음식 잡수실 것을 우리가 어디서 준비하기를 원하시나이까

[The Last Supper]

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”


26:18 이르시되 성 안 아무에게 가서 이르되 선생님 말씀이 내 때가 가까이 왔으니 내 제자들과 함께 유월절을 네 집에서 지키겠다 하시더라 하라 하시니

26:19 제자들이 예수께서 시키신 대로 하여 유월절을 준비하였더라

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.


26:20 저물 때에 예수께서 열두 제자와 함께 앉으셨더니

26:21 그들이 먹을 때에 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중의 한 사람이 나를 팔리라 하시니

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”


26:22 그들이 몹시 근심하여 각각 여짜오되 주여 나는 아니지요

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”


26:23 대답하여 이르시되 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 그가 나를 팔리라

26:24 인자는 자기에게 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와 인자를 파는 그 사람에게는 화가 있으리로다 그 사람은 차라리 태어나지 아니하였더라면 제게 좋을 뻔하였느니라

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”


26:25 예수를 파는 유다가 대답하여 이르되 랍비여 나는 아니지요 대답하시되 네가 말하였도다 하시니라

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”


Jesus answered, “You have said so.”


 

                어제 우리는 예수님의 수난과 죽음을 예비하였던 한 이름 없는 여인의 아낌없는 헌신을 보았습니다. 오늘의 말씀은 어찌보면 그와 정반대되는 상황을 다루고 있습니다. 오늘 본문에서 열두 제자 중의 하나이며 이름도 정확하게 소개되는 가룟 유다는 예수님께서 수난과 죽음의 길을 가고 계시다는 것을 깨닫자 예수님을 헌신짝처럼 팔아버립니다. 이제 그에게 예수님은 이용할 가치가 없는 사람이었습니다. 오늘은 가룟 유다와 예수님의 모습을 통해 “주인인가? 선생인가?”라는 제목으로 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.


Yesterday, we witnessed the unsparing devotion of an unnamed woman who prepared for Jesus’ suffering and death. Today’s passage, however, deals with a situation that is, in some ways, the exact opposite. In today’s text, Judas Iscariot—one of the twelve disciples whose name is clearly introduced—tosses Jesus away like a worn-out shoe the moment he realizes He is walking the path of suffering and death. To Judas, Jesus was no longer someone of use. Today, through the contrast between Judas and Jesus, I want to share a message titled: "Lord or Teacher?"



                예수님은 예전부터 제자들에게 자신의 죽음과 부활에 대해 가르치셨었습니다. 어제 말씀에서도 “이 여자가 내 몸에 이 향유를 부은 것은 내 장례를 위하여 함이니라”라고 말씀하시며 자신의 죽음이 다가오고 있음을 알리셨지요. 오늘 말씀의 시작을 보니 가룟 유다가 그것을 드디어 깨달은 것 같습니다. 오늘 말씀은 “그 때에” 라는 말로 시작하고 있지요. 이름 없는 여인이 예수님의 죽음을 알고 그의 장례를 준비하였던 그 때에. 그러나 그 때에 가룟 유다의 행동은 충격적이기 그지 없습니다. 그는 예수님을 대제사장들에게 팔아 넘겨버립니다. 15절에서 우리말은 어순이 반대로 되어있지만 원문에서는 유다가 먼저 “너희는 내게 무엇을 주려느냐?” 라고 묻습니다. 이 말은 그동안 유다가 예수님을 자신의 이득을 위해서 따른 것임을 분명히 보여주는 것이지요. 그는 자신에게 이득이 된다면 예수님 또한 팔아 넘길 수 있는 자인 것입니다. 그런데 팔아 넘기려면 좀 비싼 값에라도 넘겼으면 납득이라도 하겠는데 그가 예수님을 팔아넘겨서 받았던 돈은 너무나도 초라한 것이었습니다. 그는 은 삼십에 예수님을 팔아넘겼는데 이는 출애굽기 21:32에 따르면 소가 다른 사람의 종을 들이받아 해쳤을 때에 그 소의 주인이 종의 주인에게 배상하는 값입니다. 한마디로 종의 몸값이지요. 만왕의 왕이신 예수님을 고작 가축에 치여 죽은 종의 몸 값으로 팔아넘긴 것입니다. 이것은 그에게도 모욕이 아니겠습니까? 아무리그래도 지난 3년동안 함께 동고동락한 스승인데 은 삼십이라니요? 그런데 그가 돈을 더 불렀다는 말이 없습니다. 오히려 그는 그때부터 작정을 하고 예수님을 넘겨줄 기회를 찾았다고 본문은 전하고 있습니다. 그에게는 예수님이 은 삼십만도 못하였다는 것입니다. 그에게 예수님은 주님이 아니라 자신의 욕심과 기대를 채우지 못하는 이제 곧 죽을 지도자였을 뿐입니다. 그래서 다른 제자들이 예수님께 근심하며 “주여 나는 아니지요” 라고 물을 때에 오직 그 만이 “랍비여 나는 아니지요”라고 묻는 것입니다.


1. The Tragic Exchange: Thirty Pieces of Silver

Jesus had long taught His disciples about His death and resurrection. Even in yesterday’s passage, He announced the approach of His death, saying, "In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial." Looking at today’s text, it seems Judas finally realized the reality of this. Today’s passage begins with the phrase, "Then one of the twelve..." It was the very moment the unnamed woman recognized Jesus’ death and prepared for His burial. At that exact moment, Judas’s actions are shockingly dark: he goes to the chief priests to hand Jesus over.

While the English word order may vary, in the original Greek text, Judas initiates the negotiation by asking, "What will you give me?" This clearly reveals that Judas had been following Jesus all along for his own personal gain. He was a man who would sell even Jesus if it benefited him. Yet, if he was going to sell Him, one might at least expect him to bargain for a high price. Instead, the money he received for selling Jesus was pathetically small.

He sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. According to Exodus 21:32, this was the compensation a master received if an ox gored and killed their slave. In short, it was the price of a common slave. Judas sold the King of kings for the price of a slave killed by livestock. Isn't this an ultimate insult? No matter what, Jesus was his teacher with whom he had shared life for three years—and yet, only thirty pieces of silver? What is more telling is that the text never says Judas haggled for more. Rather, the Bible tells us that from that moment on, he deliberately searched for an opportunity to betray Him. To Judas, Jesus wasn't even worth more than thirty pieces of silver. To him, Jesus was not "Lord," but merely a dying leader who failed to satisfy his own greed and expectations. This is why when all the other disciples anxiously asked Jesus, "Is it I, Lord?", he alone asked, "Is it I, Rabbi?"



                그러나 예수님께서는 이 모든 것을 아시고도 유다를 포함한 제자들을 당신의 만찬에 초대하십니다. 무교절 첫날에 제자들이 유월절 식사를 어디서 준비하기를 원하시는지 물을 때에 예수님께서는 이미 당신의 계획대로 예비하신 유월절 장소가 있음을 이들에게 알려주십니다. 예수님이 미리 성안의 아무개와 예약을 하셨던지 아니면 지금 예수님께서 가장 분주한 명절에 어떤 기적으로 그 장소를 공급하신 것인지 우리는 알 수 없지만 분명한 것은 이것은 예수님이 예비하신 유월절 만찬이라는 것입니다. 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “선생님 말씀이 내 때가 가까이 왔으니 내 제자들과 함께 유월절을 네 집에서 지키겠다 하시더라 하라” 예수님의 때, 이제 당신이 넘겨져 수난을 받을 시간이 가까이 왔습니다. 그 때에 예수님께서는 다른 무엇보다 제자들을 자신의 가족처럼 함께 모아 당신의 만찬으로 부르십니다. 그 자리는 어떤 자리입니까? 하나님이 자기 백성을 구원하신 것을 기념하는 자리입니다. 예수님께서 유월절 어린양이 되셔서  자신의 몸과 피를 나누어주시는 자리입니다. 그 자리는 회복의 자리이고 구원의 자리입니다. 그래서 예수님은 직접 제자들에게 말씀하십니다. “너희 중의 한 사람이 나를 팔리라.” 왜 입니까? 돌이키라는 것입니다. 회개의 기회를 주시는 것입니다. 예수님께서 원하셨다면 제자들이 다 있는 앞에서 “저 가룟 유다, 저놈이 배신자다.” 라고 말씀하시면 되었을 것입니다. 그런데 굳이 밝히지 않으십니다. 그래서 제자들이 하나씩 “주여, 나는 아니지요?” 라고 근심하며 물어보는 것이 아닙니까? 예수님은 또 기회를 주십니다. 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 그가 나를 팔리라. 공용 그릇에 손을 넣어 집어 먹는 것은 유월절 의식이었습니다. 모두가 손을 넣기 때문에 이 말씀으로는 정확히 누구를 가르키는지 제자들로서는 알기가 어려웠습니다. 그러나 단 한 사람, 유다는 알지요. 예수님께서 이제 마지막으로 말씀하십니다. 24절입니다. “인자는 자기에 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와” 무슨 뜻입니까? 너의 배신과 상관없이 예수님의 구원사역은 기록된 대로 이루어질 것이라는 것입니다. 그러니 이제 그만 돌이키라는 것입니다. 이 24절을 원문으로 보면 “그 사람”이라는 말이 총 네 번이나 반복해서 나옵니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 반복해서 간접적으로 언급하심으로 다른 제자들이 눈치 채지 못하는 사이에 가룟 유다가 돌이킬 수 있는 마지막 기회를 주시고 계시는 것입니다. 그러나 그렇게 많은 기회에도 불구하고 유다는 돌이키지 않습니다. 마태는 그를 이렇게 표현합니다. “예수를 파는 유다가 대답하여 이르되” 그는 이제 예수님을 파는 자가 되었습니다. 다른 제자들이 하나씩 예수님께 근심하며 “주님, 나는 아니지요?” 라고 물을 때에 그는 예수님을 주님으로 인정하지 못하고 자신의 의도를 철저히 숨긴채 말합니다. “랍비여 나는 아니지요?” 이 얼마나 가증한 모습입니까? 예수님의 초대와 계속된 기회에도 불구하고 자신의 얼마 되지도 않는 이득을 위해 그 손을 저버리는 것이 바로 죄의 모습이 아닌가 싶습니다.


2. The Table of Grace and the Final Warnings

Despite knowing all of this, Jesus invites the disciples—including Judas—to His supper. On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the disciples ask where He wants them to prepare the Passover, Jesus informs them of a location He has already prepared according to His plan. We do not know if Jesus made a prior reservation with someone in the city or if He miraculously provided the space during this busy feast. What is clear, however, is that this was a Passover supper sovereignly prepared by Jesus.

Jesus says, "Say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'" Jesus’ "time"—the hour of His betrayal and suffering—has drawn near. In that critical moment, more than anything else, Jesus gathers His disciples together like family and calls them to His supper. What kind of table is this? It is a place to commemorate how God saves His people. It is a holy table where Jesus, the true Passover Lamb, breaks His body and pours out His blood. It is a place of restoration and salvation.

And so, Jesus speaks directly to the disciples: "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." Why does He say this? He is telling Judas to turn back. He is offering an opportunity to repent. If Jesus had wanted to, He could have pointed a finger in front of everyone and said, "That guy, Judas, is the traitor." Yet, He deliberately refuses to expose him. Isn't that why the disciples, one by one, anxiously ask, "Is it I, Lord?" Jesus gives another chance: "He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me." Dipping one's hand into the shared bowl was a standard part of the Passover ritual. Because everyone was doing it, it was hard for the other disciples to know exactly who He meant. But one person knew: Judas.

Finally, Jesus issues a ultimate warning in verse 24: "The Son of Man goes as it is written of him..." What does this mean? It means that regardless of your betrayal, Jesus’ work of salvation will be accomplished exactly as written. Therefore, He is urging Judas to stop and turn back. If you look at verse 24 in the original text, the phrase "that man" is repeated four times. By indirectly referencing him over and over, Jesus gives Judas a final, graceful exit before the other disciples catch on.

Yet, despite so many opportunities, Judas does not turn back. Matthew describes him with these heavy words: "Judas, who would betray him, answered..." He is now defined as the one who betrays Jesus. While the other disciples sorrowfully ask, "Is it I, Lord?", Judas fails to recognize Jesus as Lord. Thoroughly hiding his dark intentions, he asks: "Is it I, Rabbi?" How hypocritical! Rejecting Jesus' invitation and His repeated opportunities for a bit of paltry profit—this is the very definition of sin.



                말씀을 맺습니다. 우리가 죄의 길로 접어들더라도 그래서 이미 그 은전 삼십을 손에 쥐고 있더라도 예수님께서는 우리를 당신의 만찬에 초대하십니다. 우리에게 회복의 기회를 주십니다. 다시 돌이킬 수 있는 자리를 마련해 주십니다. 그러나 우리가 예수님을 주인으로 삼지 못하고 그저 내게 유익한 말씀해주시는 선생으로 생각한다면 우리는 결국 예수를 파는 유다와 같은 길을 택하게 될 것입니다. 예수님은 여러분에게 어떤 분이십니까? 여러분의 주인이십니까? 아니면 선생이십니까? 기도하시겠습니다.

 

[Conclusion]

Even if we step onto the path of sin, and even if we are already clutching those thirty pieces of silver in our hands, Jesus still invites us to His supper. He gives us opportunities for restoration. He prepares a place for us to turn back.

However, if we fail to make Jesus our Lord and instead view Him merely as a "Teacher" who gives us nice, beneficial moral advice, we will ultimately choose the same path as Judas.

Who is Jesus to you? Is He your Lord, or is He just a Teacher?
