24:29 그 날 환난 후에 즉시 해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘의 권능들이 흔들리리라

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,

    and the moon will not give its light;

the stars will fall from the sky,

    and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

24:30 그 때에 인자의 징조가 하늘에서 보이겠고 그 때에 땅의 모든 족속들이 통곡하며 그들이 인자가 구름을 타고 능력과 큰 영광으로 오는 것을 보리라

24:31 저가 큰 나팔 소리와 함께 천사들을 보내리니 그들이 그의 택하신 자들을 하늘 이 끝에서 저 끝까지 사방에서 모으리라

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

24:32 무화과나무의 비유를 배우라 그 가지가 연하여지고 잎사귀를 내면 여름이 가까운 줄을 아나니

24:33 이와 같이 너희도 이 모든 일을 보거든 인자가 가까이 곧 문 앞에 이른 줄 알라

24:34 내가 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 이 세대가 지나가기 전에 이 일이 다 일어나리라

24:35 천지는 없어질지언정 내 말은 없어지지 아니하리라

32 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

이 세상 과거 그 어떤 권위자도 그 권세와 명성이 영원하지 못했습니다. 영원히 살고 싶어 불로장생을 갈망했던 중국 진나라의 시황제는 결국 50세의 나이에 사망했습니다. 역사상 가장 거대하게 세계를 정복했던 징기스칸도 역사 속으로 사라졌습니다. 영원할 줄 알았던 로마 제국도 멸망했고, 우리가 살고 있는 이 미국 땅도 영원하지 못할 것입니다. 그러나 천지는 없어질지언정 예수님의 말씀은 절대 없어지지 않을 것임을 우리는 성경을 통해서 배우고 알 수 있습니다. 우리가 사는동안 하루 하루 먹고 사는 것에만 집중하고 살다보면 영적으로 무뎌지고 마지막 때의 긴박함을 놓칠 수 있습니다. 예수님은 꼭 다시 오실 것임을 믿으며 그때를 기다리는 성도로서 어떻게 살지 함께 고민해봅시다.

Throughout history, no authority or power in this world has lasted forever. Qin Shi Huang of ancient China, who longed for immortality, ultimately died at the age of 50. Even Genghis Khan, who conquered vast parts of the world, has faded into history. The mighty Roman Empire, once thought eternal, also fell. And the land we live in today, the United States, will not last forever either. However, though heaven and earth may pass away, we learn through the Bible that the words of Jesus will never pass away. As we go about our daily lives focusing only on making a living, we can become spiritually dull and miss the urgency of the last days. Let us believe that Jesus will surely return and reflect together on how we should live as believers who await that day.

1)    예수님의 재림 장면

예수님은 어제 본문에 이어서 예수님이 재림하실 때의 장면을 묘사해 주십니다. 29절에 큰 환난 이후에 “해가 어두워지며 달이 빛을 내지 아니하며 별들이 하늘에서 떨어지며 하늘의 권능들이 흔들리리라” 말씀하십니다. 해, 달, 별, 그리고 하늘과 같은 천체의 변화는 예수님의 재림이 단순한 물리적 세계의 변화가 아니라 초자연적 세계의 변화를 나타냄을 알려줍니다. 그리고 이러한 변화는 모든 사람이 어디서든지 볼 수 있는 표적이 됩니다. 그때 인자의 징조가 하늘에 나타나고, 땅의 모든 족속이 통곡하고, 권능과 큰 영광으로 하늘의 구름을 타고 오시는 인자를 보게 될 것입니다 (30절). 예수님께서 구름을 타고 하늘에서 내려오시는 모습은 예수님의 신적 권위와 정체를 모두에게 정확히 나타내는 것입니다. 그러면 예수님께서는 큰 나팔 소리와 함께 천사들을 보내어 사방에서 그가 선택한 사람들을 모을 것이라고 합니다 (31절). 큰 나팔 소리는 과거 구약시대때 전쟁 중 군대를 소집하고, 전투 신호를 보내고, 전쟁의 재개를 위해 군대를 재소집할 때 주로 사용되었습니다. 그러니 인자가 다시 오실 때는 ‘종말의 우주적 전쟁’이 선포되는 것과 같음을 암시합니다. 천사들이 동원되는 종말 전쟁은 최후 심판의 절차이며 이때 사탄은 최종적으로 패배를 당할 것입니다. 그리고 그 결과 예수님께서 택한자들을 모아 끝까지 믿음을 지킨 사람들의 수고와 헌신을 인정해 주실 것입니다.

1)    The Scene of Jesus’ Second Coming

Continuing from the previous passage, Jesus describes what it will be like when He returns. In verse 29, after great tribulation, He says: “The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” These cosmic changes—of the sun, moon, stars, and heavens—show that His return is not merely a physical event, but a supernatural transformation. These signs will be visible to all people everywhere. At that time, the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the peoples of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory (v.30).

Jesus coming on the clouds reveals clearly His divine authority and identity to all. Then He will send His angels with a loud trumpet call to gather His chosen ones from the four winds (v.31). In the Old Testament, the sound of a trumpet was used to assemble armies, signal battle, and call troops back to war. Therefore, the return of the Son of Man points to the proclamation of a final, cosmic war. This end-time battle, involving angels, leads to the final judgment in which Satan will ultimately be defeated. And as a result, Jesus will gather His chosen people and acknowledge the faith, labor, and devotion of those who remained faithful to the end.

2)    재림의 시기

32절에 예수님께서는 무화과 나무의 비유를 들어 제자들이 가지고 있던 재림의 시기에 대한 답을 주십니다. 무화과 나무 가지가 연해지고 잎이 돋으면 여름이 가까운 줄 알듯이, 말씀한 일들이 일어나는 것을 보거든 인자의 오심이 가까이 이른 줄 알라고 하십니다 (32-33절). 결국 그 날이 언제인지 아는 이는 아버지말고는 아무도 모릅니다. 그렇기에 마지막 때가 언제인지를 맞추는 것에 시간과 에너지를 쏟기보다 이 시대를 살아가는 그리스도인으로서 우리는 ‘영적 분별’에 더욱 힘을 써야 합니다. 정확한 때를 알 수는 없지만 마지막 때가 가까이 왔다는 것은 우리가 예수님이 말씀하신 징조들을 살펴볼 때 알 수 있습니다. 세상 속 전쟁, 기근, 박해, 거짓 선지자, 그리고 사랑이 식어 가는 모습들은 하나님의 계획 아래에 마지막 때가 다가오고 있음을 우리에게 확실히 알려줍니다. 우리 모두 이 땅에 살아가는 이 마지막 때에 경각심을 가지고 예수님이 재림하시면 사라질 것들에 마음 뺏기지 말고 천국 소망을 품으며 깨어 있기를 원합니다.

예수님께서는 “이 세대가 지나가기 전에 이 일이 다 일어나리라 (34절)” 선포하십니다. 여기서 ‘이 세대’는 과거 예루살렘 성전의 붕괴를 목격할 세대를 뜻한다 볼 수 있지만 그러기에는 그 시절 사람들은 이미 다 죽었지요. 그러니 ‘이 세대’는 단순한 시간적 표현이라기 보다는 예수님의 가르침에 응답하지 않는 ‘악하고 음란한 세대’를 다 통틀어서 말한다고 봅니다. 점점 갈수록 더욱 악해져 가는 ‘이 세대’는 결국 인자가 권능으로 다시 내려와 우주적 심판을 이루어야 비로소 그 끝을 맞이할 것입니다.

2) The Timing of His Return

In verse 32, Jesus answers His disciples’ question about the timing of His return through the parable of the fig tree. Just as when its branches become tender and leaves appear you know that summer is near, so when you see these things happening, you will know that His coming is near (vv.32–33). Ultimately, no one knows the exact day except the Father. Therefore, rather than spending time trying to predict the exact timing of the end, we as Christians living in this age should focus more on spiritual discernment. While we cannot know the exact time, we can recognize that the end is near by observing the signs Jesus spoke of—wars, famines, persecution, false prophets, and the growing coldness of love. These clearly show that the last days are approaching according to God’s plan. Let us live with spiritual alertness in these last days, not setting our hearts on things that will disappear when Jesus returns, but holding onto the hope of heaven and remaining awake.

Jesus declares, “This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened” (v.34).

“This generation” could refer to those who witnessed the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. However, since those people have already passed away, it is more appropriate to understand “this generation” not as a strictly time-bound term, but as referring broadly to a wicked and adulterous generation that refuses to respond to Jesus’ teaching. As this generation becomes increasingly evil, it will ultimately come to an end only when the Son of Man returns in power and brings cosmic judgment.

결국 우리는 불완전한 존재이기에 이런 불안정한 세상 속에서 계속되는 혼란 가운데 두려워하고 소망을 잃을 수 있습니다. 쉽게 삶의 우선순위 가운데 예수님의 제자로 살아가기보단 의식주 해결이 먼저될 수 있습니다. 그러나 이러한 실수는 우리가 천국 소망을 잊어버리거나 예수님이 다시 오신다는 믿음이 약할 때 쉽게 이루어 질 것입니다. 느슨해진 나사를 다시 조일 때가 왔습니다. 내가 지금 겪는 고민과 걱정들이 결국 마지막 때에는 아무 일도 아닐 것입니다. 끝까지 말씀을 붙잡으며 깨어 기다리는 제자가 됩시다.

Because we are imperfect, we may feel fear and lose hope amid the instability and chaos of this world. It is easy to prioritize daily needs—food, clothing, and shelter—over living as disciples of Jesus. But this happens when we lose sight of the hope of heaven or when our faith in Jesus’ return grows weak. Now is the time to tighten what has become loose. The worries and concerns we face today will ultimately be insignificant in the last days. Let us hold firmly to the Word and become disciples who stay awake and wait faithfully until the end.
